why did medival era always accused of "being a witch" for some things that are coincedences, or not agreeing with what others agree with? where did the witch idea even come from? did it come from religious beliefs? how? why?

This is a colored pencil study I drew of a margin drollery from a 15th c Botany text. I am assuming the thing in her hand is a magnifying glass:)
