It took a year to make this handmade piece according to the seller.

Hi all — these have been in my family for years. My grandad bought them from an antiques shop in Paris, apparently for a fair amount of money, and told us they were from the Dogon people of Mali. I’ve attached photos of the blades, the wrapped grips, and the mounted stands they’re displayed on.

A few things I’m hoping to learn:

**•** Are these likely genuine Dogon (or related Malian) ceremonial weapons?  
**•** Any way to date them roughly from the forging style, wood, or leather wrapping?  
**•** What would something like this realistically be worth today — as a decorative antique vs. an ethnographic collector’s piece?

Any expertise on West African tribal ironwork, or pointers to someone who could look closer, would be hugely appreciated. Happy to share more detail/close-up shots if useful.

I was magnetized by this mask. I found it at a thrift store today & it's been difficult to take my eyes off of it. If I lay on the floor it frowns, when I stand up it smiles, & the slits in the eyes are so long nothing escapes it's gaze.

From what I've read, masks are not decorative objects, they are spiritual & ceremonial tools, designed in a way that attracts & mystifies. They are meant to have this compelling energy through their design.

I'm curious as to if there is another reason this mask compells me. I would like to know how to respect this mask, as well as what it may have represented. If it is an export piece, I'm still curious as to any interpretation you may know.

The holes aren't all even but pretty even. It has a tag on the back that states it was collected in Zaire, Kasai River Region too.

Hi everyone. I'm hoping someone here might recognize the style or have any specific information on this mask.

This belonged to my grandfather, who traveled quite a bit decades ago and likely purchased it during travels. Unfortunately, no one in the family knows where it came from.

It's hand carved from a single piece of wood(not even sure of the wood) and is about 66 inches (5½ feet) tall and 12 inches wide. Most everything else I’ve seen has been darker, ebony styled and I haven’t seen much of anything with this vine styling at all.

I'd just love to know if anyone recognizes the carving style, origin, whether it looks like a traditional design, an architectural carving, or more of an export piece made for the art market.

I inherited this carved wooden object from my father and haven't been able to identify it. It's about 11 inches (28 cm) long and appears to be carved from hardwood. It has:

• a stylized animal (or bird?) head
• shell/possibly mother-of-pearl inlays
• a textured grip on one half
• a forked end with additional inlay

I don't know whether it's African, Oceanic, or something else. I'm mainly trying to learn:

• Country or culture of origin
• What it was used for
• Approximate age
• Whether it's a tourist carving or an authentic ceremonial/prestige object
• Approximate value/range
