Where do Irish indie filmmakers usually find actors for short films?

For people making short films, student films or low-budget indie projects, where do you usually find actors?
Is it mostly friends, drama schools, Facebook groups, Instagram, local theatre groups, agencies, casting sites, or something else?
I’m curious because it seems like smaller productions and early-career actors often don’t have one obvious place to connect.

Film Construction Vibe

TLDR considering moving home, is construction dept still a toxic swamp?

Im in my late 30's, working for a big firm in London setbuilding as a Supervisor/HOD Chippie.

Im from Wicklow, and have always considered moving home to work when i had kids etc the old story.
I actually have an in with 2 Construction Managers there and have been offered roles by both of them before, so getting a job is not tricky, I know the production designer on a huge job there at the minuite and know a few people in construction there already.

My question is, Whats the vibe like there really now? I have heard from art directors and tradespeople who have worked there over the years that the standard is lower than london, especially painting and plastering and the construction crew behave much more like builders on a jobsite than here in the uk where its very much more art dept film people, 1/3 of the crew are women and lots went to theatre school or art college so its definitely a mellow interesting crew.

One mate who works in both places said that when he goes back there he feels like hes going back into his all boys secondary school, cliques and slagging and felt very seperate from rest of art dept/props etc. Hes also been told to pace himself on a couple of occasions which is mental to think of here, its so competitive youd be out the door by 10am on the first day and theres 50 lads waiting to take your job.

Are all crews the same, are there any CM's that are more art/dept progressive sound people than the regular old schoolers, Has it changed much, I know the awful fake union nonsense seems to have passed but is it still a bit backwards.

Ill be happier at home, and its where i want to raise my kids close to siblings etc, but i dont want to be commuting to london all the time and really dont want to be miserable in my job, i really love it here.

Any insights?

Looking for a producer for a short film in West Cork

Hey all! I’m shooting my first short film in West Cork this summer and would love a newbie producer to get involved. I have the script, actors (mostly) and set sorted, but I’ve never done this before and know there’ll be plenty on the logistics side I’m missing. DM me if interested in collaborating!

Looking For a Producer and Actors

I have a completed fourth draft (approx. 80 pages) now, so I want to go into production. It's a dystopian thriller, and would be my first full-feature. I have saved up enough money over the years to finance it myself. I've tried places like LinkedIn to connect with people, and discuss the possibility of collaborating together, but they either said they were too busy or didn't respond.

If you're interested, DM me. Thanks.

We made four fake trailers for a film challenge in Galway! Check it out if you'd like. The beauty of it is being able to show insane stakes without dealing with any consequences or context!

Happy weekend friends! I'm here to share a film I made last year with some good friends called QuitTok. It's a short and silly piece about social media that was a delight to work on. Everyone put their backs into this and I'm very thankful to have a great team behind it.

Help Finding - Irish Short Film seen a few years ago - As Gaeilge

Somewhat obscure but hoping that someone will know it.

A few years ago I was on an Aer Lingus flight and watched a short film as gaeilge that I thought was just awesome. It was a drama/suspense-esque film featuring two women (mostly in the dark/twilight) in the countryside, older in time period but not a specific time that I can recall clearly. I’m a bit fuzzy on the plot years later, but believe it had something to do with the older/mother/crone woman looking out for the younger woman who was dealing with something related to menses/miscarriage. I just remember being so taken with the film style/lighting/artistic choices and would really love to find this film again to see how it holds up to memory., and to just watch it again as it left an impression.

When I try to search for this film on Google I get plenty of adjacent themes and titles, but have yet to find my white whale. Let me know if you have any ideas or leads!

Advice for first time filmmakers and music

Hello

I am looking for some advice.

So I have been working on a short film. This is me and my team’s first time producing a film and we are reaching a wall in our production.

We want to have music in our short film, which we hope to enter into festivals. Now the bands we are in contact with are independent artists that aren’t linked with IMRO. But we are aware that we need to have a Synchronisation License and a Master Recording License.

We are struggling to find a template for these.

We were wondering if anyone would perhaps have a template for either of these licenses that we could use when finalising stuff with the artists.

We have reached out to Screen Ireland, who couldn’t help and IMRO who havent responded yet.

Thank you for any help you could provide,
