I have also been very introverted and antisocial since childhood, so I barely had any friends growing up. Now my social life is basically dead, no close friends, no one to really talk to, and honestly I’ve been feeling pretty depressed and isolated for a long time.

I think it would be really nice to find some genuine connections where we can talk every day, check on each other, have random late-night conversations, vent about life, or just make each other feel a little less alone.

So I met this guy online a little over a year ago, and we clicked almost instantly. The thing is, we bonded because he was venting about his ex, and I ended up being the person comforting him.
For context, I only know his side of the story, so I can’t say whether his ex was actually as awful as he describes. But regardless, for the past year and something, I’ve been there through everything. I listen, reassure him, encourage him, and remind him he’ll heal eventually. He’s genuinely been trying to move on, and I’m really proud of the progress he’s made.
The problem is… I feel like our friendship has become entirely about her.
Almost every conversation somehow comes back to his ex. I don’t mind listening, and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of being there for him, but I’m starting to realize that I don’t really exist in this friendship outside of being emotional support.
I’m almost always the one texting first. I notice when something’s wrong with him, I remember little details, and I check up on him. But when I’m upset, it feels like he either doesn’t notice or doesn’t know what to do, and the conversation just moves on. I’m not comforting him because I expect something in return, and I don’t need him to comfort me. It just hurts realizing that I pay so much attention to him while it feels like he doesn’t really see me the same way.
There’s another thing that makes this even more confusing.
I’m the type of person who casually tells my friends I love them all the time. It’s just how I am. But with him? We’ve never even said “I love you” or “I like you” platonically. Ever. The closest we’ve gotten is him saying I’m funny or that he likes talking to me.
For some reason, saying something as simple as “I love you” to him makes me ridiculously nervous, like it’d suddenly make everything awkward. I don’t know why.
Maybe I had a crush on him when we first met. Maybe those feelings are coming back. Or maybe I’m just emotionally attached because we’ve talked for so long. I honestly can’t tell anymore.
What makes it harder is that he’ll sometimes say he wants to find someone who’ll love him as much as he loves them. I always tell him he’ll find that person someday.
But a small part of me wants to say, “I’m right here.”
The thing is… I don’t even know if I actually like him romantically because I’ve never really gotten the chance to figure that out. For over a year, our relationship has revolved around his ex. It feels like there was never room for us to just… be us.
I don’t think we could realistically work anyway, and I’m not planning on confessing anything. That’s completely off the table.
I’m just wondering if this friendship has become too one-sided. I know he probably cares about me in his own way, but sometimes it feels like I’m his therapist more than his friend.
At the same time, I can’t imagine just cutting him off. We’ve been talking for so long that losing that friendship would hurt too.
Am I overthinking this, or does this friendship sound one-sided? Is it possible to stay friends with someone when you’ve become their emotional support for over a year?
