30-06 or .270

Okay yall. I know this question has been asked in other ways. Ive read enough forums I could fill a book and watched so many videos my head spins.

Im purchasing a ruger american Gen ii. I need input on whether I buy a .270 or a 30-06 and want one single rifle for all of it. I am aware that .270 will take black bear. But concerns come up regarding brown bear.

I will be hunting from deer to inland brown bear/grizzly

Please dont give me other suggestions other than .270 or 30-06. Ive narrowed it down to these 2 options. Im aware of 6.5 prc. .308. .300winmag. 7mm.

There are so many forums where all the comments suggest something completely different lol.

I really appreciate your time and thank you for commenting.

I'm not even baiting this place, but I've got at least a dozen different deer coming through here.

Getting the itch

Post image
5 Upvotes

One of my game cameras has been pretty active all summer and seeing a few nice bucks. Really starting to get the itch for September now. This will be my first year bow hunting and second year on this property. I sure hope the bucks start making daylight appearances but the doe I’m seeing regularly during the day will taste good too

Hello all, I made a short survey regarding property improvements for deer hunting. I’d really appreciate your feedback. Thinking about starting a service company and just needing some help with understanding how interested people would be. Thank you to everyone who helps!

Stocking the shelves today and I had these come out of a box.

Are the teeth necessary for reasons other than disturbing me?

Buying Best Boots - Elk Rifle Colorado

Grown up here in Colorado and have hunted all over. My friends and I are all very experienced hikers. Everyone is giving me different recommendations: Kenetrek, Zamberlan, Schnee, Crispi, etc.

I'm hunting the Sangre De Cristos for 1st rifle Elk. My buddy keeps saying to buy the Scnhee's because the grip is softer and will be better in the cold weather. I guess Kenetreks can be a little hard once it gets cold out.

I need something tough and am willing to pay top dollar, probably up to that $600 price mark.

All the fourteeners and hiking I've done in this state has been with bad or just ok hiking boots, but I'm getting to my 30's and want to set myself up for less foot and ankle issues. (My ankle rolled in my Altra Olympus boots last week)

High top is a must. I don't need much insulation since my feet don't even get cold skiing.

I have a small property. This buck showed up last year and passed on him to grow. Last year, he also was missing a tine. I figured it maybe broke off, but this year looks like it’s not growing this year either. Would you shoot the buck with a missing tine just to get the genes out of the area?

Need ammo advice (30-06) for pronghorn

East coast guy going on a pronghorn hunt later this summer. I’m taking my 3006 because its the only center fire I own. Planning to zero at 200 yards.

Wondering what bullet y’all would recommend? Ideally something with the least amount of drop at 300 yards, which is definitely my max effective range. Eyeing the Remington core-lokt 125 grains because they seem to be flattest shooting I’ve seen. My tikka shoots most factory ammo sub moa at 100 yards

Any advice is welcome! Thanks everyone

Learning the basics

Hi, I have had this thought for a very long time but could only afford to travel places recently. I have never hunted and want to learn the basics. I have thought I could travel to visit Alaska (Fairbanks, Kodiak, anywhere really) and also complete a hunt in order to accomplish that objective. I’m from Europe and don’t own any sort of firearm.

Do you guys have any recommendations ? What places are best for that ? Recommended guides etc.

Muck apex vs Drake off-road

I’m looking for a low cut waterproof muck style boot for this upcoming season and I’ve landed on these 2 models . I’m wondering if anyone has used them and how you liked them.

I hunt sitting 99% of the time but I will need them to be somewhat stabile and athletic feeling because I don’t own a 4 wheeler or anything to drag the deer out , I do it myself so I can’t have my ankles twisting during the process lol.

Dealing with a broken fridge - guilt and shame

As the title suggests, the worst thing that could happen occurred. My fridge freezer decided to kill itself last night and in doing so everything had decided to go off. Whether it was the Roe deer (see post history) or rabbit - it’s all gone. I can’t salvage it as it’s too far gone.

I’m incredibly guilty at the moment. I feel as if life was wasted as myself and my family can no longer enjoy the food provided. Furthermore, it felt so deeming to have to throw away a carcass into the trash as if it was nothing - which it isn’t!!!

I needed to vent. I’m ashamed of this and for the future I’ll have to double and triple check my fridge freezers before committing.

I hope I can be forgiven.

Best gun for hunting withouth a scope

I'm in the process of buying a new gun, and have more and more been interested in hunting with iron sights (My Mauser 12 has good sights, but I want a smaller calibre than 9.3x62)

I've been looking at Sako 85 Grizzly and Tikka t3x Arctic. I really wanted the arctic when it came out, and that it's made for shooting without a scope.

I had decided to go with it, but when I found out about the 6-8 month waiting time from Sako/Tikka I started to second guess my decision. I'd love to get some input and also tips on good guns for hunting with iron sights. Both for stalking and for driven hunts.

Bear Country Sidearm - 9mm not enough?

Hi everyone. Sorry if this has been asked, but I will be in grizzley bear country likely once in my life (next month for 4 days). I need y'all to tell me I'm overthinking this.

I don't want to spwnd the money on a 10mm or wheel gun for one trip. Everything else I own is 9mm. Also, i recognize that spray is going to be primary.

My current plan is to bring a full size 9mm with extended mags and some buffalo bore hard cast. Am I overthinking this? Should I be OK with the above and spray?

Combo gun

Looking for a combo gun for small game, maybe deer etc. I have seen the TPS M6 in 357, which I like because I can shoot 38 out of it and also get an adapter to still shoot 22lr if I wanted, but it appears to be out of stock everywhere. I was just curious if there are other options that exist out there that I missed.
