Flock cameras
I looked up where they are and there's four in the county. But WHY are three of the four focused on the Lowes parking lot???

This week is not one of the busiest in terms of meetings of local government but this post exists to tell readers of r/Charlottesville what’s coming up. Links within go to various sources.
CHARLOTTESVILLE TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
Charlottesville has had a hard time delivering on transportation infrastructure over the years despite getting a lot of funding. City officials have made a lot of strides toward putting better internal systems in place but there appear to still be hiccups. There will be a work session Monday afternoon on many transportation projects. The city’s website for updates has not been updated since November. (read more in the newsletter)
SCHOOL CAMERA REVENUE ALLOCATION
Last October, an ordinance kicked in that allowed for cameras to record vehicles in school zones to spot for speeding violations. On Monday, Council will be asked to allocate $320,000 in revenue from those violations. However, it appears from the staff report that that’s not enough to cover the cost of paying a third-party to operate the cameras. I will admit I only gave this one a once-over but I really hope a reporter with more capacity than me can dig into this a bit more. (staff report)
WINE INDUSTRY PRUNING
Let’s pretend for a moment this entire set of blurbs is to encourage any of the writers out there to dig in to just writing about this place. Most of my work comes from covering meetings, but if I had money to pay reporters I would love to know more about the wine industry. A good place to start would be with a request from the Monticello Wine Trail to the Albemarle Economic Development Authority for $20,000 to help pay for a class on pruning techniques to help after a brutal frost this year. (staff report)
WHAT IS A CATALYST PROJECT?
Leaders in Albemarle County resisted economic development for many years with leaders from the 70’s to the 00’s mostly in agreement in the belief that attracting more business to the area would attract more people. That began to change in 2010 and Albemarle government is leading the way. The Albemarle County Economic Development Authority will meet Tuesday and continue a discussion about ways to move forward. (more in the newsletter)
Comments and questions always welcome. The intent of all of my work is to ask questions. The only answer I know is 42 and that doesn't seem to do much but promote further inquiry. Or perhaps that is the point?

We are headed to UVA for some follow ups for our daughter (9) and want to treat her a little afterwards. We are already committed to Shenanigans since that’s become a tradition when we need to go to UVA.
Looking for:
A nice playground/outdoor spot
Rolled ice cream or another kind of unique frozen treat
Good soup dumplings (we usually go to Q Noodles, but a new place sounds fun)
Thanks for any recommendations!

My small business is working to get health insurance quotes and multiple companies have told me they are not allowed to cover people in the 22902 zip code. What kind of shadiness is this?

Anyone know how bad this is and if the road is clear at all? Traffic is horrible

Per owner’s post on FB/IG, their last day of business will be 7/31. I wonder what will go there next? A couple of local favorites (Al Carbon and Guajiro’s) started in that little space.

Sincere thank you for speaking on behalf of the those of us who cannot make these meetings due to juggling work and family. We appreciate you standing up for the community and making sure that our voice is heard. It is time that we consider all sides of this equation including the tax-paying families and businesses in this city and not just those who yell the loudest.
See below for time stamps.

Has anyone used Bright Horizons for drop-in daycare? I have a child under 1 whose daycare is closed 6 weeks out of the year & Bright Horizons is supplemented by my job, but I feel like I've read mixed reviews online.

Does anyone have a recommendation on car detailing service? Or anyone you might avoid?
Recently purchased a used car that could use some attention. Paint has swirl marks and miscellaneous scratches that need to be amended.
Thanks in advance 🤘🏼

So I was browsing on deflock and noticed a new camera out on 64. Has anyone seen it and can you provide a picture?

Hey gang, new resident here. I have 7-10 bags of landscaping waste and a growing pile of unbagged debris from the last storm, but I don’t have a vehicle big enough to get this stuff to the Ivy recycle place. All of the local junk removal options I found online are crazy expensive… really just looking for someone with a pickup truck who wants to make a few bucks. Any recommendations?

I wanted a bologna, egg, and cheese sandwich this morning, so I went to the lucky 7 on Market. The kitchen was closed and when I asked the guy packing up boxes he said it was closed for good. Anyone know what happened or if they are opening elsewhere?

It's legal in VA, and I wonder what useful experiences people have found.

This feels slightly awkward to post, but maybe/hopefully I’m not the only person in this situation.
I’m a German guy around 40 who has lived in Charlottesville for a few years. I work remotely, have a child, and recently went through a major life change. Somewhere between remote work, parenting, and being an adult in a place where many people already seem to have established circles, I never really built much of a local social life.
I’ve lived in the US for about 16 years, but I often find it easiest to connect with other Europeans, internationals, people who have lived abroad, or Americans with a more international outlook. That isn’t meant as a criticism of anyone, I just miss having people around who share some of that cultural context.
I’m into science/data/AI, photography/architecture/design, cars, fitness, food/wine, parenting, and conversations that go beyond small talk. I’m not looking for networking or dating, just actual friendships and people to occasionally grab coffee, have a drink or dinner, take a walk, or do something around town with.
Maybe there are a few people here in a similar position, and we could put together a very informal international hangout or Stammtisch. Comment or DM me if that sounds appealing.

Does anyone know a place where I can vacuum my car out? I saw there was a post from 3 years ago on here about this but wanted some updated information. I looked at the local car wash sites but cannot seem to find if they have a self-service vacuum

Delegates Katrina Callsen and Amy Laufer, along with State Senator Creigh Deeds, sent a letter to ACPS Friday, July 17, urging the school board to consider an independent investigation.

Ignoring the current thunderstorm and any outages caused by fallen trees--has anyone else been experiencing a lot of very brief power outages lately? I’ve had several that lasted just long enough to make me reset all the clocks around the house. I can’t be the only one.

The deadline for registration updates and mail ballot requests is THIS FRIDAY, July 24.
This is a Dual Primary, which means you must choose which ballot you want (Democratic/Republican) but Virginia does NOT register by party, so this will not tie your registration to a party affiliation.
If you ONLY need to check/update your registration, you can do so with a VA DMV-issued ID via the Citizen Portal by 11:59p on July 24. If you have completed a Same Day Registration in the past year, check your registration either on the portal or by calling the office!! For paper registration updates OR if you wish to update a registration AND submit a mail ballot application, all of those forms MUST be received by 5p SHARP on Friday, July 24. If we receive a change of address registration too late, then we won't be able to process the corresponding mail ballot application!
ALL mail ballot requests, regardless of submission format, MUST still be received by 5p THIS Friday, July 24.
Early Voting is still ongoing for the August Dual Primary and will be available 8:30a - 4:30p Monday-Friday until Friday, July 31.
We will be open extra hours on Sunday July 26 from 12-5p as well as Saturday July 25 & August 1 from 8:30a-5p.
The LAST DAY of regular Early Voting is Saturday, August 1st! Election Day is Tuesday, August 4.
If you have questions, you can reach us at 434-970-3250 or [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). For Albemarle County, it's 434-972-4173 or [[email protected].](mailto:[email protected].*)

Has anyone been watching the videos of city council? Last night someone actually made a comment that “reddit doesn’t reflect the voice of the community.”
The claim was that the council is unduly influenced by comments on Reddit rather than the opinions of actual citizens. Pretty ironic, as the meetings are packed with activists and encampment dwellers.
But I’m truly curious why there appears to be such a disconnect between the opinions expressed on social media and those expressed at council meetings.
My suspicion is fear: the shouting and booing of the few speakers who oppose the city being overrun with homeless seems genuinely intimidating.
So for all the people who have expressed discontent about the lengths the city goes to support the carefree drug life of the “unhoused”, are you watching the council meetings? Have you expressed concerns there? If not, why not?
To be honest, I’d like to go myself but have trouble working in the time with work, kids, etc. but part of me feels it’s a bit like jumping into the lions den.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a relatively low-cost Pilates class for older guys? A friend has been suffering from back and shoulder issues, and it seems a lot of it is posture-related.
