Screwballs and the Single Girl

OMG, can we talk about the pain and difficulty and challenge of putting the CC screwball bracelets on if you live alone?? I'm scratched to pieces. And it takes FOREVER. If you have the snug fit like they're meant to be, it's a complete battle getting it on your wrist, because it's hard to hold it open yourself.

And then when you do manage to get it on, the next challenge in the process is getting the ends to line up. You squeeze the bracelet and they just sail past each other. When I do eventually get the ends to meet, I need my thumb on one side and my second and third fingers on the other side to squeeze it hard enough to hold it with the ends together. I then have no free hands or fingers, so I start the ball rolling WITH MY NOSE.

I've been at this a while and I still need to get the ends to match up. I've done it a few times but haven't managed to do the nose-roll. I keep needing to take breaks.

The new work done in Wellfleet is causing massive back ups. The Wellfleet PD has posted about it, they recommended contacting the DOT.

For those unaware, Marconi beach used to have a very short two lane set up, where people could turn right into Marconi beach, or continue straight. This "drag strip" was unstructured but (apparently) worked better to reduce backups.

The new intersection eliminated this second lane (making it strict turn only), so now the backup is much, much longer.

The other issues is in front of Wellfleet Cinemas - the new more structured lane merge and removal of the second lane earlier, causes cars to merge much further back resulting in much longer backups.

I understand why the work was done, I know these are safer but boy are we paying for it and I'm now avoiding Wellfleet/Truro/Ptown because of this which can't be good for business.

I’m in West Yarmouth with my crab-obsessed 9- and 11- year olds. We spent yesterday searching all our usual spots (Crab Creek, Colonial Acres, Bass River Bridge, etc.) and saw zero crabs.

We finally ran into a fisherman who said a big storm a few weeks ago washed them out and they haven’t come back.

I know people are (rightly) protective of their spots (fwiw we’re a catch and release family), but i’d love to know if we’re on a wild goose (crab) chase. Was thinking of driving out to Waquoit tomorrow but won’t bother if it’s going to be a bust.)

Hi everyone, I am new to New England. A few friends and I are driving down from Boston this weekend and staying one night. What is our best bet for an easily accessible and beautiful beach that we can drive up to and set up easily on? Just looking to hangout for most of one day. We are staying around South Dennis for the night but willing to drive wherever.

Additionally; the next day before we head back, what are some must-see towns or areas to fill up a morning/afternoon? Any good local food/breakfast/affordable-seafood spots? Thanks!

I’m looking into getting a boat to use around the chatham area (mainly to get to north beach) but am concerned about all of the sand bars. Looking for any advice or recommendations on how to learn how to get around the area safely ! thanks!

Title says it all. Well, almost. We’re visiting Chatham in a few weeks for a week and will be travelling with extended family (ages 4-84). Where do we stand on bike rentals? The whole week or daily? Any suggestions for companies to go with?

And whale watching? We’ve done that in PNW and if it’s just as “boring and nauseating”, half of us skip it. Thoughts? Better places than others to recommend? Thanks! Can’t wait to visit!!

Moving to mid-Cape (Yarmouth/Dennis) next year, hoping to hear how people actually navigated the housing search.

Quick context: my Boston landlord is selling in about a year, so I have a solid runway to plan this right. I work in hospitality (bartending/restaurant management) and recently started a meal prep/personal chef business I want to grow on the Cape. Hospitality job covers rent and bills, meal prep is the supplemental/growth piece. I have a few restaurant connections on the Cape already, so I'm confident on the job front.

One ask: please don't just tell me "it's a crisis, look elsewhere." I know. I'm not from the Cape, but my family lives there and I've been going year-round my whole life, I'm not naive about the lifestyle shift, the nightlife tradeoff, or the housing squeeze. I'm going in with eyes open and I'm intentionally choosing the slower pace.

What I actually want to know: with a full year to work this out, how do people find housing here, specifically in-law apartments, carriage houses, above-garage units, that kind of thing? Best time of year to look? How do you actually network your way into these (versus just scrolling listings)? Any Facebook groups or local resources worth joining?

Any input from people who've actually done this move is hugely appreciated.

I need to get my legs working on a hike, but in all the hiking books I can find the the only trails that are considered “moderate” or above are dune or sand based.

Anybody know of decent mid-Cape hikes that maybe have some elevation that are on dirt?

I’m by no means an athlete, just looking for something a bit more than all the flat trails.

Can you spot the Cape Cod locations?

Maybe there's a birder out there who knows the answer to this. It's mainly an off-season observation, but it's puzzled me. When I say "off-season" - I mean when the southern migrators (laughing gulls, plovers, terns...) have left and northern migrators (loons, eider ducks) are in town. I see gulls that sit on the beach all facing the same way. I have no clue why they do this. I've imagined that perhaps they know a storm is brewing, but it doesn't correlate with that. I also imagined that maybe the wind is too high, but it doesn't seem to correlate with that either. So, why do they all sit down en masse and face the same direction?

I see this mostly on the large extended beach at the Wychmere Beach Club in Harwich Port, but gulls like to congregate there, as there seems to be good eating.

Edit: I guess I find the "aerodynamics to fly into the wind" an unsatisfying answer as the wind in these situations isn't terribly up and it doesn't explain the seasonality.

Have taken the online boat safety course and now need to get on the water with a qualified instructor. Dennis/Brewster but some flexibility. What’s the best way to get started?

Hello all, we would like to take our 6 year olds on a manageable bike ride, ideally somewhere we don’t have to drive 30 minutes just to even access a trail. We are not a biking family by any means but we want to get better, and I know there are a lot of great bike trails on the cape to practice but I’m overwhelmed by the options and just generally not knowing the area too well yet.

Our 6 year olds can ride bikes, but I don’t trust them in the road or around traffic yet so I’m hoping to find something flat and away from cars. Also obviously they’re 6 so they can’t do a 25 mile ride or anything. Just looking for something short and scenic. Thanks for any ideas!

The mooring fields are half empty, but the waitlist in a lot of areas are 10+ years once you get on a list. In other towns, if a mooring isn't being used, you eventually lose it. Why isn't there a similar policy here?

I know several people who have held onto moorings for years without using them because they're so hard to get. I understand wanting to keep your options open, but it would be nice if there was a way to make unused moorings available again. Does anyone have any intel on the towns thought process on this?

Recent Dennis resident and I'm interested in Crowes Pasture, but not sure I'll get my money's worth with the ORV pass this year.

How many of you remember Thompson’s!!

We loved it! Both my sisters worked there while I was working at the Wychmere Harbor Club (we were members there). So many super cool friends at Thompson’s just walking through those old doors (even though it was getting a tad bit of makeup). I still eat Ritz crackers with port wine cheese! We actually would come boat sometimes.

This was during the 1970’s and 80’s. What’s your story?

Really desperate ask but I didn't receive all the parts needed for my Physics lab experiment and I've called every electrical supplies store nearby, but none of them sells resistors. If anyone knows someone that sells them, I would really, really appreciate it. :((
