17M, still need famotidine after 2 months and can't get follow-up care
I'm 17M and I've had reflux for about 5-6 years. Around 2-3 years ago, I had a pretty bad flare-up that stopped around few months ago. A few months ago, my doctor prescribed famotidine for my GERD. I took 40 mg daily for about 7-9 weeks, exactly as prescribed, but I was still having symptoms.
My mom tells me to just keep taking it, but I'm worried about possible side effects like blood or liver problems. Because of that, I've been taking 20 mg a day instead. It works really well, but I still get reflux sometimes in the evenings before taking this medicine or whenever I stop taking it.
The problem is that my mom won't take me for follow-up bloodwork or any other appointments because she says she's too overworked to go anywhere. In my country, I can't see a doctor or get blood tests done without a parent or guardian's permission until I'm 18.
Is it safe for me to go back to taking 40 mg daily without getting any bloodwork done?
