Physician Responded Final Update to “What’s going on with my wife”

Edit: I want to thank this community immensely for the support in this. Having access to it likely saved my wife’s life both in confirming that she needed emergency treatment, but also in helping me to navigate the complexities of her alcoholism.

Update to “What’s going on with my wife?”

[Original Post:](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskDocs/s/xYSUstYTvl)

51F, 5’5”, 175lbs.

Medications: Albuterol as needed

Medical History: asthma, history of epilepsy as a child, previous smoker (quit 20 years ago), gastric bypass surgery 10 years ago, menopause, ongoing alcohol abuse for the last 4 years (1 bottle on a good night, 3-4 bottles on a bad night). She bruises really easily - just from bumping into things.

Location: USA

We got home from the hospital Friday evening. My wife is doing significantly better. In the end they decided not to remove the gallbladder since I guess the infection was well controlled by the IV antibiotics.

At the end of the day she was diagnosed with Sepsis, Anemia(don’t remember the value), severe malnutrition and vitamin deficiency (including B1), Leukopenia (WBC at 1.1), Thrombocytopenia (Platelets at 19), Alcoholic Hepatitis and Cirrhosis, and alcohol induced bone marrow damage.

They gave her Ativan to help with the withdrawal and her anxiety about doctors. She was on fluids and 2 IV antibiotics during her stay with a few days of take home antibiotics she is finishing today. They gave her a shot of some medicine they give to chemotherapy patients to stimulate WBC production.

We threw out all of the alcohol in the house and she hasn’t asked for any. I think she detoxed in the week in the hospital and I’m hoping it stays that way. We have follow ups scheduled with liver and blood specialists.

Physician Responded help :( skin issue of unknown origin

Posting on behalf of my sister with her consent.

31F, 5’3, 245 lb, on Adderall, Ambien, Zepbound, Wellbutrin, Prozac, Topomax, Requip, Vitamin D2, Atarax (Hydroxyzine), Ubrelvy

Skin condition that popped up after a course of Amoxicilin. She has taken many many courses of penicillin drugs with no reactions.

It turns from the red rash shown, to the white bumps/blisters, peels like a sunburn, and comes back. She’s done two full courses of prednisone, has been on Benadryl.

Docs so far have said they don’t think it’s a medication allergic reaction, don’t think it’s poison oak/ivy, etc. We have seen primary care, the ER (the night her breathing was iffy), and Derm. We are set to see an allergist in a week but she is miserable and in pain.

Any ideas? 💡 anything we haven’t tried? any specialist recommendations? We appreciate anything you guys would know.

Thank you so much for your consideration and your time.

Physician Responded what could this be ?? (not the scars)

17f, 5’8 & ~98lbs. before anyone asks, yes i am anorexic. i’m in outpatient treatment currently, i’ve been working with a dietitian since january. my bloodwork, heart rate, and my blood pressure is on the low end of normal, barely normal. however my heart rate does go up somewhat significantly compared to standing vs sitting.

my leg is normal now but this is a photo from about an hour ago when i was walking home from school (little under 2 miles.) this has been happening to my legs frequently for months when walking. worth noting it’s not exclusively to the outdoors. i pace a lot and i first noticed it earlier this year while pacing. i understand it looks like hives but they definitely are not hives. i’ve had hives a few times before and these are not the same i can tell. doesn’t itch, my lower leg felt hot/warm when i touched it.

is it possible this could be a circulation issue or something ?? in march i passed out and it was determined in the er i passed out because my heart couldn’t get any blood to the upper half of my body. this only ever happens on my legs.

Physician Responded I 29M hurt my back at the pool. Was told I had a rotational problem in my spine and to see a chiropractor. After looking at the xray I thought I could see what looks like a fracture. Is everything good here?

No previous medical history other than asthma. Played chicken in the pool a couple weeks ago and now have some bad back pain. Went to get an xray today and the doc told me that the vertebrae have rotated to the right, left, then right. Was told to go see a chiropractor. I saw the images and didn’t ask at the time but now think she may have missed a grayish line on this vertebrae. What do yall think? Am I crazy or is something there?

Physician Responded Help!! Why am I making breastmilk?!?

Upvotes

have been outside a ton lately with my son and it's been super hot and I've been sweaty. I went to shower the other night and noticed that my bra looked like it had breastmilk leaks on it(perfectly round about half dollar size) my first thought was lol that looks like when I breastfed lol but I chalked it up to sweat and got in the shower when I had milk coming out of both sides. I started breastfeeding when my son was born and had to start supp with formula when he was two weeks old per the dr. I still tried everytime I fed him to give him both breast and I'd pump. by the time he was 8 months barley anything was coming out and I was exhausted to say the least so I stopped. so I'm so confused why this is happening! btw I'm 40 years old and I'm not pregnant, had a period about 10 days ago.

Physician Responded i cut my septate hymen

f19

idk my weight bit less than normal maybe

i take metamizole sometimes

hey so i did something dumb. I realized i have a septate hymen like a string or loop inside and it hurt when i tried to have sex and when i used tampons. One time i accidentally put the tampon through the wrong hole and barely got it out.

So yesterday night i was fed up with it and bc i got strong painkillers anyway i decided to just cut it with scissors. It was bleeding a lot and this morning it kinda hurt to walk. I put isopropyl on the scissors beforehand.

Am i cooked lmfao or do i just take tylenol or something or something anti inflammatory? its still bleeding this morning when i peed and a bit this afternoon but it doesn't really hurt and i feel okay just kinda tired but that might be bc i stayed up until 2am yesterday

Gynecological things are difficult where im from and im from a religion where you dont have sex before marriage and my parents dont know i tried to have sex and that ive used tampons before. And i don't want them to know. Im over 18 but still living with them and can even go to college but getting them to agree was so hard and they will take everything away when they find out. They also have my insurance card for doctors

Physician Responded What’s in between my left pinky toe and toe right next to it?

Post image
15 Upvotes

A couple of days ago I (M22)stubbed my left foot’s pinky toe on the corner of my bed and since then my toe has felt a little weird so at nights when I would lay in bed I would use my other foot to separate the pinky toe away from the toe next to it and it would give a little ‘relief’. This has been going on for a little under a week now.

I came home today from work and laid in bed as I was lazy and took my socks off and decided to do the same thing but this time I had my gf check my toe for a deformity if it looked swollen or something… instead she found this.

Initially I thought it was a cut from when I stubbed my toe and the skin separated from the force but it’s definitely not a cut and more along the lines of like a wart or cyst of some kind possibly? Does anyone have any idea what this could be or should I go to the doctor for it?

Also I wear boots all day as my job requires me to be in and out of my office and on construction sites through the day so my feet sweat quite a bit and I do a decent amount of walking.

Physician Responded intervertebral disc/herniated disc

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone :)

Just a heads-up: my English isn't the best, so I used a translator.

I’m getting a bit desperate now because four different doctors have all told me something different. I’d really like to stop the endless doctor visits, but right now I’m stuck lying around again with pain that’s driving me crazy.

To sum it up briefly...

In early 2024, out of nowhere, I developed such severe back pain that I could barely move—let alone (excuse my bluntness) take a proper dump, because the pain made it impossible to push.

I got an MRI appointment pretty quickly, and—lo and behold—it turned out to be a disc issue.

You’d think, "Yay, a cause has been found," right? Well, nobody wants to treat me; they say I’m too young for the appropriate treatment (I was 23 years old). If I were 20 years older, they’d operate immediately. Then the next doctor says it’s coming from my hip?! And another one says it’ll just heal on its own. They all just fob me off with painkillers.

Okay, in my naivety—and given that I was still in vocational training and couldn't afford much time off—I pretty much pushed the whole issue out of my mind once the pain subsided after two weeks of taking strong painkillers.

Then, in early 2025, the next "flare-up" hit—only this time, it was accompanied by sensory disturbances in my right thigh and half of my genital area. So, back to all those doctors, only to hear the exact same things. One doctor literally told me, "As long as you don't pee yourself, it's not an emergency"... thanks a lot for that "help."

This time, the symptoms went away fairly quickly (though, of course, that involved a few days of strong painkillers again).

Then, a week ago—again out of nowhere—I had excruciating pain and sensations of tingling and numbness. This time, I went straight to the ER because it was the middle of the night and I didn't have any painkillers at home.

They admitted me as an inpatient right away so they could do an MRI the next day. The doctor came by and explained that everything is fine—the MRI results are unremarkable, and I can go home.

The physiotherapist at the clinic said he wouldn't touch me while I was in that much pain, and after seeing the image, he said he certainly wouldn't do it.

I just didn't say anything anymore, because I can't take it anymore. Always having to explain and argue. I just can't go on like this. Yes, the periods of acute symptoms only last a few days to a few weeks, but things can't go on this way.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the latest MRI scan, and I only have the 2024 one on CD—so I only have this single image, which I took a photo of from the doctor's computer screen.

What would you do? Can you make anything out in this single image? Can a disc problem really heal on its own?

Physician Responded Worsening skin lesion on my son

6M 130cm tall 25kg
Current medications cefalexin 250mg/5ml
Medical history: none
ASD1
Duration of complaint ~2 weeks?

About 2 weeks ago, my son grazed the outside of his ankle. It was very unremarkable- I don’t think it bled at all really, he wasn’t really bothered with it at the time. A typical active 6 year old boy injury. We paid very little attention to it, so much so that we don’t have a clear photo of it on the day it happened. We scoured through photos and are fairly sure it happened on or around the 10th July and I will attach a very blurry photo of the graze in comments. It was around the size of a pea.

About a week after the original graze I noticed the skin around it peeling and some open areas that I thought was strange. The size was getting larger. This coincided with my son also having high fevers which we are certain were due to a flu like illness that his younger brother also got.
I photographed it and watched it for a day or so before booking a GP appointment (in comments)

We went to the GP on the 20th July (around 10 days after it happened) GP had no idea what it was. Possibly impetigo? they did an xray which was NAD, started on oral fluxcloxacillan. My son couldn’t stomach that so they switched to cefalexin the next day. I will attach photo of it that day in comments.

As of today, 23rd July we have had 4 doses of the cefalexin. There is no noticeable joint swelling. He is not limping, no fever. There is however new pain behind the wound in between his ankle and Achilles that he says hurts to touch and he flinches. But no impact to joint function. He is still recovering from flu like illness so is a little irritable and fatigued still but otherwise well within himself. We have a follow up GP appointment scheduled for tomorrow, however I am feeling concerned that the redness is still spreading despite starting oral antibiotics, particularly visible on the upper side of the wound.

I am wanting to know if anyone could weigh in about what they think it might be? Best treatment option for today? Should I wait for GP tomorrow or escalate today?
Any help much appreciated

Physician Responded How to discreetly alert a doctor?

male/height and weight unknown/19-27 Y.O

NOT:SA how to discreetly alert a doctor without tipping off my parents?

I have an eye appointment tomorrow and have some things that REALLY REALLY can’t be ignored. like imminent blindness fear kind of urgent. not sure if actual imminent blindness, but sources seems to be point that way. my last two eye appointments have had my worries glossed over or outright ignored by the doctors and i’m not 100% how to proceed to get taken seriously.

I am suffering from severe medical neglect and it makes me a bit fearful to tip off my parents. some of my symptoms have been flashing lights, static in the corner of my eyes, seeing colors or hazes, and waves of white. just as an indicator of where i’m standing. this is just the simplified version. The parent portal does not seem like an option since my parents are aware of that. they are not tech illiterate. so i’m trying to rely on some kind of visual que or hoping that there is an established “i need help” physical que or just some special discreet word that serves the same function as the pizza distress call? not to downplay the distress call but it’s the best comparison i have for what i’m seeking. i possibly thought of blinking or tapping morse code “S.O.S” but i’m not sure that doctors are trained for that.

I’m not trying to say i’m at imminent risk or am asking for a “diagnose me” answer. just asking for tips on how to approach this? i’m hoping i did not misunderstand the rules.

i’m not sure if a full list of my symptoms/problems would cause my post to be deleted so i omitted them. hopefully.

Physician Responded found strange thing on my son's (4yrs old male) scalp

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

just earlier today my son(4) complained of something hurting his head. I found this! he said the area felt sensitive & it hurt when brushed over. tried to google lens it & it said it was a tick so I’m totally stumped! (I’m 99% sure that’s NOT a tick😂😂😥)

touching it feels like very short hair. like partly grown out buzz-cut short hair. it's bendable but that hurts apparently. it's entirely solid.

I've had suggestions of ruptured pilar cysts and infected hair follicles but I can't find any pictures that look remotely similar. I'm worried it's a wart but I am entirely lost!!!

my son has no skin issues at the moment, he gets a bit of dandruff every now and then as most kids do. I'd say he's pretty healthy. he doesn't take any medication.

any help would be appreciated

Possible skin infection? Please help 19f

Post image

19f female, 5’9, 140 lbs on doxycycline, history of kidney stones/infections and aki, diagnosed anemic and ocd for context, i’m in arizona

on july 6, i noticed an itchy and painful red bump on my leg, at the fold of my right knee. i ignored it for the most part but 2 days later noticed it had turned black. there was red streaking up my leg. i went to urgent care next day, dr prescribed triamcinolone and said it was a spider bite. the very next day (july 9) i noticed another on the back of my left thigh. the next day, it turned black.

i decided to go to a derm once the first wound started to form a crater. it was horrible, a black hole in my skin. she said it looked like an infected bite but couldn’t be sure since there were two, and prescribed doxycycline. i’m now on day 11/14 of my antibiotic round and i have noticed a new red spot pop up on my right calf . i noticed it yesterday (itchy and then painful) and today it has turned black. furthermore, my other two scabs have gotten larger.

i’m concerned because i know there’s no way a spider has bitten me 3 seperate times and it’s gotten infected. other than these lesions, im in good health (other than a torn acl). no fever, no chills, no other signs of infection.

could this be staph/mrsa? dermatologist said it didn’t really look like it and didn’t seem too concerned to test for it. this is my oldest scab and it’s changed appearance a lot, the one on my thigh is currently a deep black crater and on my calf it’s just a small, flat black spot that is painful and hot to the touch.

My boyfriend and I had a condom accident on Tuesday 21st. It broke without us realizing it, and he ejaculated inside me. I'm really worried about the possibility of pregnancy. My period ended on the 19th, and I took Plan B within a short time afterward.

I'm just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and what your experience was. Would you trust Plan B alone, or would you consider getting a copper IUD? I've read that a copper IUD can also be used as emergency contraception if it's inserted within 5 days.

Any advice would be appreciated. Neither my boyfriend nor I want children at the moment. We've been together for 9 years, and this is the first time something like this has happened.

random wound on my leg?

Post image
Upvotes

i woke up one morning to this random hole-looking wound on my leg with some green thing in it. It’s been completely painless and has never itched, has never been warm or swollen, and only feels a little tender when pressure is put on it (like an old bruise).

The first day I cleaned it with plain soap and water (to see of the green part would come off) and it just made it turn white. I’ve had it for almost a week now (5 days exactly) and started using ointment and covering it with a bandaid (topcare triple antibiotic cream - started sometime between the 3rd and 4th day).

I also have zero clue what that green part could be. It looks like part of the wound itself, but i’m not sure at all.

Physician Responded Scary orgasm while ongoing neurological condition

F21, 54kgs, lesbian

I got into an accident on ninth of June 2026, after which I developed a condition called kyphosis of cervical spine where in my cervical spine, which is supposed to be into a c shape has turned in the opposite direction. Some of the symptoms that I have felt our dizziness, loss of balance, complete blackouts, tinnitus and occasional loss of hearing in my ear, increased sensitivity in my teeth and continued pain in my spine and nape of neck as well as pain In my left hand. I have been on bed rest ever since. Recently, My muscles have started to loosen up a bit due to which my physician suggested that I can continue with my normal life and I have started going back to my university again.

The real point of concern happened today when after almost 2 months, I had sex with my partner.

Usually, when I orgasm and have sex after a very long time, I start tearing up while almost fainting during the sex, although I recover within a few minutes and want to go for another round pretty quickly.
Today, after I had already orgasmed once my partner decided to use the strap on me. Almost about 10 minutes in, I told them that I can’t feel my hands. We had taken all the measures to safeguard the recovery of my neck. About five minutes later, my hands went completely numb and I could no longer feel them which put both me and my partner in a very awkward position where my hands were frozen in a very concerning state. My fingers went stiff, and it was difficult to move them like I naturally can. My hands were so stiff that even if I tried to change their position into a normal state, I could not. I was sweating profusely, and my partner was really scared.
When my hands finally started getting sensation and was in a resting position. My partner noticed that my fingers are twitching a lot, which has never happened with me before in such extremity.

I cannot tell this to my Doctor who is treating me because I go there with my parents and I live in a very homophobic country.
I will try to attach a picture of how my hands looked like when they went stiff.

I think it was something related to me orgasming while my nervous system could not process it considering my spinal cord is compressed with the unnaturally opposite curve of my neck due to the impact of the accident which led to the unnatural stiffness. Has this happened w anybody else before? Does anyone know if this is a point of genuine concern something i should bring up w my doctor? If so, then how without outing myself?

P.S.: getting medical advise on this is really really difficult for me atp, i am okay now, that scare lasted for almost 10-15 minutes.

Bump on calf

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi there! I am 29, female, 5 ft. 8 in., 165 lbs, do not smoke or have underlying conditions.

Should I be concerned about this bump that appeared on my calf? I first noticed it 24 hours ago. It is not itchy but is sore when touched. The red raised area around the central bump is warmer than the surrounding skin, raised, firm, and has grown since I first noticed the issue.

If I do need to see a doctor, is this something that can wait 24 hours?

Thank you!
