Question For Doctors Stitches hurt so bad I cant sleep. Normal?

Hello,

Recently got 16 dissolving stitches in my ear to provide pressure on a drained hematoma. The swelling is insane and it almost feels like the stitches are cutting into me. It hurts so bad at night but not during the day somehow.

Do you have any advice to help me reduce the pain? Ice helps a bit but it also causes pain and is hard to hold there.

Is it normal to cut someones ear open, provide stitches, and then send them home with no pain meds?

I am not asking for medical advice.

Question For Doctors Facial swelling after discontinuing sodium sulfacetamide

Upvotes

I was on sodium sulfacetamide 10% lotion to treat my mild acne and rosacea. After a week or two I started to develop an allergic reaction (puffiness, red, itchy, stinging) and so I discontinued use. However the puffiness has not gone away. It is worst in the mornings, but it feels like someone has injected 20 mL of saline in my face. I can’t tell that it’s improved since discontinuing the lotion, it might be getting worse.

My eyes are tired from my puffy eyelids and and they are dry.

I am not asking for medical advice.

Question For Doctors Injured myself on Hack Squat

Upvotes

Hi. I have no insurance, living in USA. I am scared to death. I was training yesterday, and I did barbell squats followed by hack squats. I was doing tempo (4 Second descent) with only 3 plates, and I had to rack it early due to a sharp pain shooting up what felt like my spine. I was bracing pretty hard so i’m hoping it’s just I was bracing too hard and pulled something. I finished the workout with some isolation/accessory movements so that made me feel better that I could still walk/bend a bit. At the time it was painful to bend down.

I went to sleep, kinda hurt to breathe deeply in a few positions but laying directly on my stomach worked. Today I woke up, feels a bit worse. I have what feels like a soreness under my shoulder blades. Definitely feel it when I depress my shoulders, or brace hard. Twisting motion brings out the pain a ton. I thought it may have been a slipped or herniated disc but idk, i don’t have pain radiating to my leg like the sites say. i think It could just be my rib ? I sent my info to google (I know I know) and it says these are possible diagnoses

a rib joint or intercostal muscle strain, an oblique or lower back muscle tear,

I can lean to my left with no pain; but to my right I feel 5/10 pain when coming back up.
I really feel pain when I sit and lean slightly forward, or just trying to put my chin to my chest. It feels like a slight spasm to my body. Also in bed when I am laying on my stomach, and try to get up. I feel a lot of pain when i’m on my back and move my head forward . I hope it’s not nerve damage. I’m glad it’s not paralysis. .

what do i even do? i can’t afford a scan … fuck my life

I am not asking for medical advice.

After some quick google searches; It seems like it’s my quadratus lumborum. It’s in the exact spot and it has the same symptoms, bending twisting turning.

Question For Doctors Failed Sleep Attempt?

Upvotes

I am not asking for medical advice. Just asking what happened.

I’ll explain all the steps to give context.
So I was feeling really tired one day and so I decided to have some alcohol (I heard it increases the effectiveness of sleeping pills) I then later took 2 pills of prescribed Melatonin (2 mg each), but after a couple minutes I was impatient and took a 3rd with orange juice. And then after I started to feel the effects I went to bed and tried to sleep, after a while I passed out and then woke up 2 hours later (I checked that I did not miss a day) I felt hot, sweaty and had a bit of a headache, my throat also felt weird and I also felt a bit of acid, I then drank a lot of water to try and feel better. I then couldn’t get back to bed despite still having jelly legs, so I played around until I eventually fell asleep and then woke up at 7:30 am still extremely drowsy and then slept until 2:30 pm.

Notes:
I have tried alcohol with melatonin before but with just one pill and it worked fine.
I think the orange juice caused the acid reflux.
I normally have 2-4 mg of Melatonin before bed.
I initially went to bed at 9 pm which is quite earlier then I normally go to bed.
21 M.

TLDR: why did having 6mg of Melatonin with alcohol not help me fall asleep?

Pretty bad sun burn not sure what to do

So I was at the pool m(18) and I didn’t have sunscreen stupid I know, and I got badly sun burnt specifically on my shoulders it’s starting to blister and I’m worried about risk of infection I apply aloe a few times a day but I’ve heard people say not to wear clothes except the only way I can sleep on my side or back or even front is with a very smooth soft blanket covering it and I’m trying to figure out what other things I should use to either help prevent infection or help the burn go away quick (any other things to look out for or be mindful of is appreciated)

Also I’m new to Reddit so I don’t know if I can attach images of my shoulder or not

Question For Doctors How to tell when a gym injury needs to be seen by a doctor?

I am not asking for medical advice. But, like is there a general rule of thumb about when I should go to the doctor for a gym injury?

Like I hurt my back on some heavy squats a month back. The pain is pretty bad to the extent it radiates to my right thigh. It gets back closer to normal but, whenever I go back to gym even basic movements cause it to start hurting like crazy. Like I have previously recovered from my recklessness without much issue but, cannot decide if this warrants going to a doctor.

Extreme sleeplessness

I am not asking for medical advice.

Could you please tell me something about what happens after 150h sleeplessness? When does it become lethal? What symptoms introduce the critical stage? Do you experience a heart attack or does your lung fail?

Many thanks in advance.

Does this sound like an allergic reaction?

(I am not asking for medical advice.)

So I bought this Burt’s bees acne soap and the day after I used it then showered my stomach and back had dead skin in it like I just exfoliated the crap out of it. It’s not itchy or painful, it literally just feels like dead skin coming off it.

I kinda expected it because on the back of the acne soap it mentions that it can cause excessive dry skin but I only used it on my face and nowhere else! The dead skin is only on my stomach and back, nowhere on my face. I suppose it could be a coincidence with it just being dead skin but I was just concerned since it was the exact day after and the same thing today after I used it yesterday.

I’ve stopped using it for now to test it!

Question For Doctors Painful cyst on groin from ingrown hair returns

Hi- a few weeks ago I had a red and inflamed ingrown hair that got infected after being around for over 6 months. I got a penicillin shot, antibiotics, and a 2nd shot of penicillin. It went down, no more redness or swelling. Well out of nowhere it’s back, huge and red and swollen, a little painful (see photo.) I have an appt Friday to see dermatologist again. Any advice? I’m scared and never had this happen before. At what point do I go to ER?

Legal disclaimer: I am not asking for medical advice.

I feel like I am going crazy ..(chronic back/neck pain)

Hi everyone. I’m a 25-year-old female who feels like I’ve hit a dead end. I am not asking for medical advice. I’m looking for someone to just hear me out because I feel like I am actually going crazy like am I imaging the pain I’m going through or?? Because everything always comes back “normal” so I should be fine but I don’t feel fine..
- Chronic back/neck pain:
I’ve had chronic neck, upper back, and lower back pain for years, and it’s progressively gotten worse. The pain is there every day. Most of the time it’s a deep ache, but sometimes it throbs or feels like a deep burning sensation (almost like Icy Hot inside my muscles). My neck and upper back also feel stiff, and I occasionally get pain that radiates into both arms.
The pain is worse with pretty much everything—sitting, standing, walking, or lying down. It doesn’t usually wake me up, but if I wake up during the night, it’s hard to get comfortable because my back hurts.
- What has been done:
So far, I’ve only had an MRI of my lower back, which showed a small herniated disc. I originally thought it was an MRI of my whole spine, but I later realized my neck and upper back have never been imaged. I’ve also had neck X-rays that showed some abnormalities/misalignment, but I was told nothing was significant enough to explain my pain. An ER doctor even recommended following up with my PCM about getting a neck MRI, but since it wasn’t an emergency, they couldn’t order one.
I’m not looking for pain medication or a diagnosis over Reddit. I just want to feel like I am being heard.

Question For Doctors Can I have strep without bad throat pain?

Female,22,150lbs
I am not asking for medical advice.

I’m going to go to urgent care regardless but I’m asking anyway!

My mom that I live with currently has strep. I’ve got awful sinus symptoms going on, sinus drainage, really fatigued, just kinda feel icky in general
But my throat doesn’t hurt? Interesting thing is yesterday my throat hurt a litttle bit, but it went away when I got up this morning.

My throat looks a little red but there’s no icky patches, bumps, nothing like that

So can I have strep without having much throat pain? The other symptoms (my nasal passages feel irritated) are bothering me WAY more then my throat
And follow up question, can strep be really severe one time, and not bad at all the next? Last time my mom and I BOTH got strep it was genuinely the worst pain of my life, and she was pretty bad off too.

But now this time she’s pretty much totally back to normal after only two days of antibiotics, and I don’t feel all that bad either, just generallyyyy kinda ill

Fitness and Health

You’re a 21-year-old lifelong athlete (5’9”, 170 lb) who has lifted consistently for about 5 years and plays baseball year-round. After taking about a month of inconsistent lifting, you’ve returned to the gym and are experiencing widespread joint/bone pain rather than normal muscle soreness. Your left shoulder hurts during dumbbell shoulder press, your lower back and neck are painful/tight, and your left elbow also hurts despite being right-handed. You’ve had essentially no significant injury history and are surprised that such a short break has led to this much pain. You’re looking for possible explanations and recommendations for what to do.
