POMPANO BEACH — A woman faces a felony charge after she allegedly took a Security Guard's phone at Pompano Citi Centre and even swapped out the phone's SIM card, but was still tracked down for arrest.

Roxanne Griblin, 38, of Boca Raton, was charged with grand theft following the June 11 incident.

Deputies were called to Pompano Citi Centre, at 2001 N. Federal Highway, on Saturday morning. A Security Officer told them that store workers complained about a woman loitering in the area. A Security Guard said he told the woman, later identified as Griblin, to leave.

According to the arrest report, as Griblin walked away, she picked up a cell phone that was lying on the ground and walked out of the mall area.

The phone, it turns out, belonged to the Security Guard and was a corporate device assigned to him by Allied Security — the firm that handles security at the shopping complex.

Tracking Her Online

The Guard later realized the phone was missing and called Verizon to track its location. Soon, he and his manager were watching on an online map as the phone pinged its location — it was being carried by someone walking along North Dixie Highway.

Deputies, dispatched to track down the stolen phone, soon found Griblin on Dixie Highway and arrested her. According to the arrest report, she admitted to finding the security guard's phone. She even had the presence of mind at some point to take out the phone's SIM card. But the device was apparently still able to broadcast its location.

When deputies searched Griblin's bag, they found the Guard's phone (in an orange case with the security company's logo). According to the arrest report, the phone's value was $1,000. The phone's SIM card was also in her bag.

Records show Griblin has prior theft convictions. Deputies took her to the Broward County jail. Her bond was set at $2,500.
