You all may (or may not) have noticed a new wave of comments on works, claiming to be from AO3 Trust & Safety and that your account has been flagged for a mandatory security review. The comment instructs you to open a link to verify your account, that it must be done within two hours, and then goes into the possible penalties of not following their instructions.
This is not from AO3. Do not open the link. Instead, report the comment via the normal methods (the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports link at the bottom of any AO3 page) if it is from a logged-in account, or marking it as spam if it is from a guest.
AO3 does not officially contact people about their accounts through the comment section. Never follow links that aren’t from a trusted source, and be wary of anyone claiming to give harsh penalties under short time pressure. Scams are always changing and evolving, so keep an eye out for any in the future where the details may vary.
As always, we want people to be able to ask here if they don’t know about if a certain comment is a scam or not, so we will continue to permit posts asking about these comments. However, we have also added these automod replies to quickly explain the situation for anyone who does make a post about it. You can trigger them with:
!accountreviewbot
!trustandsafetybot
and the text of that will be stickied in the comments below (it’s very similar to the post itself). Have a great day!

Idk, I started reading fanfics on AO3 when I was 11, and I honestly feel like it's become part of my personality at this point. 😭
The other day I went through my oldest bookmarks (the ones I saved when I was 11), and wow... you can really tell they were bookmarked by an 11-year-old. 💀 jskdk

Is anyone else having issues logging into ao3? I've tried signing in and it says the user doesn't exist, but if I type my username in to ao3 I can find it. I've clicked reset password but everytime I enter my email it comes up with a black screen and says "retry later".
Thanks for any help!
Okay, I remember reaction fanfics used to be really popular—the ones where characters react to their own story or source material. There were literally all kinds of them. Some even had characters reacting to fanfics about themselves.
But I haven't come across one in a long time, and I honestly used to love them. 😭
Does anyone know if they're just not popular anymore? And if you have any recommendations for good reaction fics, I'd really appreciate it!

I discovered it very recently and oh my god it's changed my whole experience COMPLETELY. I am someone who is suuuuper picky with things I don't like - I'm neutral about most things, but if I dislike it, I REALLY dislike it.
So all this time I've been making liberal use of the exclude filter, but repeating the same thing in every search got super annoying. Not to mention, some stuff (like omega verse or /reader) is really hard to catch successfully so you have to keep trying different versions and something always gets through. I am used to scrolling past this stuff, obviously, but on certain fandoms or pairings there's huge swathes of content I'd rather not see. And the main annoying point, searches. As far as I know, you can't exclude on searches so if whatever annoying thing is at the top and you look by kudos, GG.
SO after I was looking fics of a specific character and getting way too many reader fics (nothing wrong with them, just don't like them), I got sick of it and started to look up how to change it, since they will not add blacklists officially due to too much server strain. And it's been genuinely super helpful.
Shout out to this post and the works inspired by it for helping me out, especially this one. Below is a short list of the kind of stuff you can do with this, but not fully limited to it. * Block tags wholesale, never see them again, ever. * Block tags only if they're in a specific rating. Hate something but only if it's in your explicit f/m? Gone. * Block fics with a pairing or character only if they appear as they first character or ship. Useful if they're q popular ship that you don't mind if it's in the background but don't care about a whole fic centered around it. * Block any / ship with a character. Useful if you only want to seem with a certain person, or don't want to see them shipped at all * Add exceptions to any blocklist so if a specific tag or thing is present, it will show up even if you have it blocked otherwise * Add highlights to specific tags that you really like/need to be warned about. Put that major character death warning in bright red, underline Found Family, etc * Block certain groups of characters from being shipped with other groups of characters, if you prefer that * All of the above but entirely case insensitive. * Limit the fics that pop up to those in your spoken languages. I've limited it to Spanish and English only, which is impossible to do by default. * Block mega crossovers, you define what amount of fandoms count for a block * Block works with empty summaries * Add wildcards so it catches everything that starts with a certain word (like book* catching books and booking)
And there's much more, the above is just the stuff I'm using it for. If you prefer to rawdog fanfic then tis won't be of much use, but for someone like me it's invaluable. I've built up a filter that's like 426 lines long, and I still have to add more and keep improving it, but it's making my experience so much better.
A caveat: depending on how much you block, you may see significantly less content than before. Since the filter only hides the works per page, you may see mostly empty or fully empty pages if you block too much, so watch out for that. Depending on your browser you may also have to split the blocking skins across multiple skins, so there's that too - personally, I use brave and one single skin worked just fine.
Just wanted to share it cause it's been super useful for me. If anyone wants to set this up or needs help I'm also available, I can also provide examples of what I use! (With censored names, don't want anyone to feel bad about what 8k blocking)

Title is self explanatory, how do I add images? I know that you're supposed to use rich text and press that picture button then put a link and size and yadda yadda but like how?? Because when I try to put images it doesn't work
How do I make this work 💔

The fic was very clearly trying to use canon characterization, but they messed it up by basing his entire characterization off of a mis-translation in his sonic heroes bio. In the English version of sonic heroes eggman’s bio calls him a feminist, but it’s actually a mis-translation of the original Japanese version which says eggman is a womanizer

For context, Im writing a long and already pushed out 2 chapters (1.9k words and 5k word separately) with the third just finished (3k words). My question is if there‘s a certain amount of minimum words that should be released?
i know there‘s no real min or max and the author should just write until they‘re happy with the results, but I feel like some readers would be clicking off if after 2 weeks you‘re only pushing out 3k words.
It would help if someone could give some advice on this situation ❤️
So a week or two ago, FanFicFare stopped downloading ALL fics from A03 for me. I gather from the other posts I've seen that it's because of Cloudflare which means this is not a temporary issue. I've also seen many suggestions about how to configure your personal.ini to combat this. I have tried anything and everything suggested, but it simply will not work for me. So is that it then? No more downloading fics? I know I can download an epub directly from AO3, but in fics where the author uses a Creator Style, that style is not exported into the epub. There are so many textfics now and I used to be able to modify the stylesheet in Calibre to get the formatting right, but all the html code is scrubbed when you download the fic directly from AO3. Is there another program or something that someone can recommend where I can download a fic from AO3 like FanFicFare used to with all the original code intact? Even if it's just the initial download that I can then import into Calibre with that code preserved and update the stylesheet that way. I don't care if it's extra steps. I just want to be able to read the fics on my ereader in the format that was intended.
Thanks in advance!

Ever have a tag you are trying to put in and find it isn't there? I tried to put in Facial as in the sex act and it's just not there. Is it just too basic to bother tagging? There's lots of other stuff from the mundane to the bizarre but not that?
What tags have you not found that you just find confusing?

Soooo I'm about to abandon a fic and rewrite it from start and I don't really know the ettiquette about it. I will post one last full chapter with the endnotes being along the lines of 'yeah this is now abandoned I'm rewriting it, thanks for sticking around, if you read this, have a cookie 🍪' and add the tag abandoned. But uhm... do I mark it as finished or not? Bcs I won't work on it anymore but the story is also not finished. Idk if this makes sense but yeeeeee.... help? What is the unwritten rule here, does it even exist?
(I would also add at the end of the work summary that it's abandoned so that people who aren't subscribed to the fic see that it's abandoned before even reading/opening the fic, so that they don't reach the last chapter to get hit with that news bcs I can imagine that this could be a horrible feeling.)

Hii I've been trying to create a profile in ao3 since May of this year and the log in invite was assigned to arrive early July but it never arrived ;;-.
After trying again this month and looking up my place in the queue the site said the email was not in the lista at all.
Anyone know what may be happening?

As in, you see the tag, and you're reading it no matter what. Mine is friends w/ benefits, regardless of the rating. Every time the angst is so good and I end up reading it quicker than anything else.

It's all about the situations that said character/(s) would go through to make them say this or that it's a world full of endless possibilities, it's really exciting to think about it as well 🙂↕️🙂↔️

The one on the left is the longfic I've been working on for a year and a half. The second one on the left is another longfic. The rest are a third of the length at the very most and new. I always have to go to the stats numbers to see how new docs do lol

Hello everyone!
I was hoping that some of you, given perhaps your extensive reading experience, would know of any fics they would be willing to recommend to someone who is hungering for a good read. I'm new to the world of fanfiction and, having read some works that impressed me, would like to draw upon your wisdom and experience, and willingness to induct a novice into your mysteries.
In general, my main requirement is that the fic is really well written. I read a lot of novels, and a lot of classics (much of it Russian Lit, which I appreciate for their *neurotic sentimentality* and their comfort with unhappiness) but I've made a tour of various authors and genres. It's by far the biggest expenditure of my time, and I can't stay with anything if I don't find the writing palatable. So fics that have been reviewed and edited (occasional mistakes are fine of course).
Romance is welcome, but I would strongly prefer it not to be the main focus or primary driver of the story. Gen and F/M stories are especially welcome (frankly I would prefer a minimum of romance). I’m not looking for M/M-centered romance, although M/M relationships are completely fine as background elements, canonical relationships, or secondary parts of the plot.
I also tend to prefer characters who are intelligent, introspective or at least thoughtful — I am not very action driven, and enjoy seeing how characters, peoples, events move along and progress. The more down-to-earth the setting and characters the better as well, so everything remains understandable, human-driven and seems more consistent. Prefer if everyone, not just the MC, is also intelligent to a minimal extent. And I appreciate contextual realism—the story, its characters and events operate according to the culture, psychology, lore of the world.
As for themes, my preference is for psychological/historical/philosophical themes, but am otherwise open to essentially any genre/fandom/cross-fic if the writing is strong enough. I have some bias towards more sprawling prose, and characters who behave and think as adults, but ultimately just want a good, very well written story.
Please and thank you.

I think this would constitute as research studies. Basically I am going to have my first artist alley booth. I wanna make stickers and such of PG ao3 tags. Thinking of atleast doing "No Beta We Die Like..." and "Dead Dove" but what are your favorites? Just for fun give me your favorite tag to give me some ideas!!

I've been posting my story 2 weeks now and I noticed a large uptick of guest kudos compared to registered users for the past few days. Is this normal?
