Subreddit Meta Comment Cooperative - July 22

Welcome to the Comment Cooperative!

This thread is for sharing positive feedback and reviews with your fellow fanfictioneers!

No concrit, no nitpicking, no grammar checks, no "I don't like this part because..." NOPE! None of that, nada, zero, zilch. We've got a weekly thread on Saturdays for constructive criticism if that's your preferred style of feedback.

Key Rules for Participation:

  • If you're posting in this thread you must leave a review for someone else. This is a community based thread, and therefore needs the community to be involved so that it is fair for everyone.
  • 30+ words when leaving reviews, please. This is to promote fair play and level the field. If you want to ramble on from there, go right ahead!
  • Quoting parts of the fic does not count toward your review word count.
  • It is highly encouraged to review in this thread and also copy/paste it to the actual fic or chapter they've linked.
  • If you see something that doesn't have a review yet, please try to give it a read to spread the love around.
  • If you have the time, reviewing more than one fic would be a thoughtful thing to do.
  • If you just want to hang out and review fics without putting in your own, you're more than welcome to!

Posting Fics for Review:

  • Select a passage from a fic you want a comment/review on. There is a hard limit of 600 words.
  • Please use wordcounter.net to check the length of your snippets. Going forward, snippets over 600 words in wordcounter.net will be removed. This is to ensure a consistent standard. Users are responsible for making sure their comments abide by the rules.
  • Top level comments should be fic snippets.
  • First line should be Fandom | Title | Rating | Link - AO3, FFN, etc.
  • Copy and paste your fic tidbit directly to the thread unless it contains Mature or Explicit content.
  • If the fic contains Mature or Explicit content (explicit sexual situations, extreme depictions of violence, or underage content), please provide a link to these fics with appropriate tags and warnings.
  • If your fic contains this content but the specific scene you've chosen to post does not, please warn those who might go link-clicking about the content in the rest of the fic.
  • If you, for whatever reason, would not like the review also put on your actual fic, please say so.
  • Reminder: If you contribute a fic, you must leave a review for someone else!

Formatting example:

Fandom | Title | Rating | Link to offsite

(new line, double enter) Any applicable warnings

(new line, double enter) Your fic text.

Tips and tricks for leaving a positive review:

  • When a line catches your eye, quote it and say what you liked about it.
  • If there's an overarching theme or technicality the author did well, point it out.
  • You may have no clue about the fandom, but did you get a good sense of a character, or the scenery, or the plot, the action, the feeling of the scene, the interactions, the dialogue? I'm sure they'd like to know!

Timezone Changes

Celebrate Someone is commenting every chapter

I just wanted to celebrate with you.

I know it's nothing, it's one person BUT.
A few weeks ago, I started writing again after a hiatus of 3/4 years. I got divorced, went back to college and all... It was all very busy. I also took writing classes and entered a few contests (I won 2 here in France, yeah!).
And I went back to the very first thing I wrote, in 2021, my long fan fiction in the universe of The Strain, which is very niche.
And boy. It was bad. The story was bad, my OC was totally a Mary Sue and the writing was trash.
I gave it to a friend of mine who is a professional editor and made me feel even more terrible about my writing.
We spent days building the story, writing each character's arc separately etc. Crazy work for a fandom with like 12 potential readers!

And so, I started posting a few edited chapters in lieu of my old ones and... I got hits.... I got kudos and now... I have this one reader leaving LONG comments on every chapter. And it makes me SO happy.

I was kind of scared the girls who harassed me in 2021 would come back but for now it's only kudos and fun and nice comments. It feels so good!!!

There, sorry for oversharing but I just wanted you all to know that even in small fandoms, there will always be at least one person your fanfiction will please :) keep writing!

Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: W Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair to play along with other fun games.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter W. You can suggest more than one, but please put them in separate comments.
  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt containing that word. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.
  3. All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning. Mods may remove excerpts that break these rules.
  4. Respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, at a minimum, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!
  5. Upvote other excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Again, everyone likes nice comments!
  6. Most important: have fun!

Writing Questions Americans and other English speakers, what kind of lullabies do you sing to your children?

I’m planning to write an Itoshi brothers fanfic on AO3 that evokes a sense of nostalgia. Since I know that a large portion of the AO3 audience is American—and given that a lullaby plays a significant role in the story—I wanted to ask: what lullaby do you sing to your children, or what lullabies were sung to you?

Discussion Will fandom save the humanities? A survey for my MSc project on classical online communities.

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm an ancient historian and classicist, currently doing my Master's in Digital Humanities. I'm working on my dissertation project investigating online classical communities.

I'm particularly interested in fanfiction writers producing classical/mythology-related transformative work, including fic based on Epic: The Musical, Percy Jackson, or any other classical/mythological source material. I'm also looking for other types of creators (fanartists, cosplayers, animators, etc.) if you know any. I use the term classic/classical broadly to encompass the entire antiquity period (including civilisations outside of Greece and Rome) up until the fall of the Roman Empire.

I've created a complete anonymous questionnaire for creators of classical transformative works (18+) to share their work and experience: https://forms.gle/y4fthyL9RVnooC4C7 . No data apart from responses is collected.

If you're not a creator but still consider yourself part of this online classical/mythology community, as a reader, commenter, or general fan, I'd still love to hear from you, even though the questionnaire itself is aimed at creators. Reach out directly if that's you.

I aim to make academia aware of the power that platforms like AO3 have in spreading knowledge of the classics and raising awareness of them, while also bringing a new lens to classical reception by relating it to fandom. With the humanities crisis we've been experiencing for years, fewer people are entering these fields through traditional routes, but fandom is where people are actually discovering and falling in love with classics right now. If academia doesn't recognise that, it risks missing where the subject is actually staying alive.

I hope you all can help me! Feel free to share the questionnaire with anyone you know who fits the criteria, fic writers or otherwise. Do message me or comment if you have any questions.

Writing Questions I really want to write a fanfic… but no fandom is clicking. What do you do when this happens?

I've been really wanting to write a fanfic lately. Not a huge project — actually, I'd like to keep it fairly small, write it mostly for myself, finish it first, and maybe publish it afterwards if I'm happy with it.

The problem is… I can't pick a fandom.

I have several fandoms I like, but right now none of them gives me that "YES, I need to write something about this" feeling. And when I try to force myself to come up with a plot or an OC for one of them, my brain just goes completely blank.

The weird thing is that I really want to write. It's not the act of writing that I'm tired of. I just don't seem to have a story or fandom that's grabbing me enough to start.

I also tend to enjoy writing OCs into existing universes, so I'd probably like to do that again.

Has this ever happened to you?

Do you wait until a fandom/story naturally grabs you again? Do you use prompts? Revisit old fandoms? Pick something almost at random and start writing until an idea appears?

I'd especially love to hear from people who write mostly for themselves and only publish once a story is finished.

Writing Questions Pillow Prince???

Hey so I had posted a work on AO3 recently about a male gay character and one of the tags I added was #Pillow Princess (insert gay character).

I thought that was the correct use because doing research it was said to have originated from lesbian media and terms, but was now used for LGBTQ+ individuals as a whole. but I got a comment saying it was lesbian exclusive and that I was trying to erase lesbian people and such.

Im lesbian. I was always under the impression that pillow princess was anyone who preferred to receive the pleasure rather than giving it (from things I’ve read and google). I thought it was a term that could be used under the same umbrella as ‘Malewife’ when used for a male character receiving.

I don’t want to offend anyone! So I changed the tag to #Pillow Prince (insert gay character) instead, since that seems like the next obvious answer.

I’m just wondering if it is really that offensive, since, as a lesbian, I had never even considered that it was offensive towards us😭

(Also I was gonna post this on r/AO3 but apparently you cant post on Tuesdays???)

Discussion Does ao3 have a kudos glitch?

Upvotes

I write for niche fandoms, so I’m used to my fics not getting much attention. But, last week, when I published the latest chapter on my long fic, the guest kudos exploded in a day.

I‘ve heard of the bot that randomly gives a handful of kudos, or maybe a lot of people saw my fic that day—so I didn’t think much of it. But, I’ve been getting around 10 guest kudos every day since and it’s starting to get a little ridiculous. This isn’t happening to any of my other fics either, just this one.

Will it ever stop, or is it stuck on some glitch that will repeat indefinitely?

Venting Scrapping my fanfic after the main character turned out to be a white supremacist

I have been on and off writing a story about a specific kpop idol.

The storyline and everything about the background of the story is very tied to the idols background and "personality" so I cannot just replace the name either.

Its such a first world problem but I hadnt been this passionate about writing in a while and I was really getting into it and I was days away from publishing the first chapter before the incident. And now im unsure if I have the desire to rewrite and recontextualise it under a different cultural lens (if that makes sense???).

I know we dont know celebrities and people on the internet but I did not expect him to be a white supremacist omg.

And to anyone who defends his actions there is nothing to defend, he is definitely knowledgeable about the symbol on the shirt and especially being frlm a western country hes 100% got no excuse. Not that he would've if hes from Korea which I see the delusional fans always bringing up but thats a different discussion.

But my overall question ignoring the rant is if you've ever had to compeltely change a fanfic or story due to somwrhing similar to this.

I think i may have to stick to writing fanfics of completely fictional characters so no chance of them getting cancelled or doing some messed up shit I dont wanna look like I advocate for it because I do not.

Anyways any advice or responses is appreciated thanks :)

Discussion This feels like fanfiction–✨❤️

I get tired of hearing bad mainstream writing being described as feeling like "fanfiction". Sometimes I get it, but often it's just used as a derivative. But then sometimes I find a piece of media that genuinely feels like fanfiction to me– in the best way! And I love it❤️

So, what are some things in writing/media that feel like fanfiction to you, in a good way?

Writing Questions Would you call this a kingdom or a dukedom or something else?

Upvotes

So, I’m writing about fictional Japan. It’s not a country, not yet at least, and it’s divided into four locations: north, south, east, and west.

Each location has a clan where the clan head rules the land. I’ve been calling them kingdoms but I feel that’s wrong since i feel like there should be a king or a royal family. I could call them dukedoms but the lands aren’t run by dukes, just a powerful clan.

Eventually, these lands will be united into one country, japan, and the northern clan will be the ruling family where the country will have its first king.

Should I continue calling them kingdoms?

Discussion Tagging Ships Wrong

ive noticed this thing in some fics on both ao3 and wattpad (In my defense of wattpad some old fandoms I like have no fixs in ao3 but have some on wattpad) sometime even tumblr. Basically they tag a ship but they mena it in a friendship way even if they are using the romantic tag. in the end it turns out they are shipping one of the characters with an oc or reader.

so Im just wondering has anybody else encountered this? Cause in almost any fandom Im in I always see this.

Lost Fic Looking for a Lost Tokyo Revengers Wattpad fanfic

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to find a Brazilian Wattpad fanfiction that I read between 2021 and 2023, but I think the author deleted it or changed their username. I'm hoping someone here might recognize it.

Here are the details I remember:

- It was written in Portuguese.

- The original story was Draken × Reader (Y/N).

- Later, I believe the author deleted it and rewrote the story as Baji × Reader, keeping almost the same universe and characters.

- It had over 100 chapters.

Some very specific details:

- The reader's father was named Daisuke.

- At first, Daisuke seemed like an ordinary businessman, but later it was revealed that he had ties to the criminal underworld.

- A character named Akira secretly worked for the mafia and eventually ended up dating Daisuke.

- There was an original character (OC) named Hakkey (or Hakkei/Hakey—I'm not sure about the spelling). He was basically the reader's adopted brother and was dating Hanma.

- In the Draken version, the reader almost ended up with Baji, but the author kept Baji's canon death because she wanted the main couple to remain Draken × Reader.

- In the Baji version, I think the story was rewritten so that Hakkey died instead of Baji.

- The story used multiple POVs (Reader, Draken, and other characters).

- The plot eventually became heavily focused on the mafia.

I also remember that the same author wrote other Tokyo Revengers fanfics, including one about the Haitani brothers (Ran and Rindou), and possibly fanfics for other anime as well.

Does anyone remember this author or these stories? Even the author's old username or any archived copy would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you so much!

Discussion how much of a stickler are you for canon geography?

this isn't necessarily about real world places (which i feel should have more research and accuracy on them, personally), but more about fictional buildings and areas. how much of a stickler are you when it comes to distances or exact locations of a character's house, place of work, school, various landmarks in canon, etc? if there's a general idea of it in canon. are you the type where it should be as exact as possible, or do you like taking liberties with it to fit your story? likewise, how do you feel about it as a reader when you notice these details are accurate/inaccurate?

i end up taking creative liberties with it, sometimes unintentionally because i can't be bothered to remember exact geography (which i'm terrible at), or it might fit the story better if i change it a bit. but i still have that perfectionist voice in the back of my head yelling at me that people will get on my ass. i doubt that will happen, but now i'm curious as to how other people feel

Writing Questions To describe the scent of decaying carcasses

I’ve smelled a rotting bird once, flies spawned from it and it was a chunk, a slimy mass that dissolved into small bone of that I mistook for a snail when it was fell within my bicycle basket from the tree above some time in the night. It was repulsive and somewhat fishy, but I had and still have no words to describe it, it did not linger in my mind beyond a day. How would you describe it?

Anyone else sometime rack up very wierd and questionable google searches while reading a fanfic. Sometimes it leads me down into a really wierd rabbit hole about rabbit plagues or wierd obscure medical conditions or searches that make me really hope the fbi isn't currently spying on me kus one fic mentioned a hockey player that had his throat cut open by a skate (rip adam johnson) and suddenly I'm looking up info on neck lacerations.
