My boyfriend got us kicked out and banned from a hotel that I paid for..
I booked and paid for a hotel room for my boyfriend and me for a 2 day trip in a different city. We had only been there for about 2 hours when he started hitting his weed pen in the room. I wasn’t smoking it or anything but the room got foggy and then It set off the fire alar.
When the hotel staff came, my boyfriend tried to lie tell them it was incense, but they could clearly smell the weed and didn’t believe him. I thought it was so stupid for him to lie and say that and I did tell the hotel lady that he was smoking. We were kicked out with no refund, and now the hotel says they’re going to charge me an additional $250 because they have to call the fire department to turn off the alarm in the room .
The reservation and payment were all under my name, so I’m the one losing the money. My boyfriend is the one who decided to smoke inside the room, even though the hotel had a no-smoking policy.
I’m upset because I paid for everything and now I’m out the cost of the room plus another $250. I don’t know if I should dispute the charge if they add it to my card, or if I should just demand that my boyfriend reimburse me for everything.
What would you do in my situation?

u/deededee13 15h ago
You aren't likely to win a dispute. Your boyfriend smoked in the room, you admitted to smoking (not like incense would have been a better excuse), and the hotel almost certainly has it defined in their policy.
Your boyfriend owes you the full cost of the room plus the additional charges.

That would definitely be on the table. Ignoring the hotel rules, getting you kicked out, and leaving you with the bill is a pretty serious breach of trust.

If he was the one who ignored the hotel rules, he should be the one taking responsibility for the bill.

Girl, dispute the boyfriend. It's clearly marked in all hotels where smoking areas are and aren't and that there's a cleaning fee. He broke the rules. They are well within their rights to kick you out and charge a cleaning fee. Your issue is your boyfriend, not the hotel.

Weed pens don’t smoke up the place like flower or a joint does. It’s like a vape. Smell and smoke go away. There is no way a weed pen got you guys caught. This story is false or you’re not telling us something or you don’t have the full story. I’ve hit my weed pen everywhere from a motel to the Ritz. It’s undetectable and will never set off a smoker.
Also, obviously if it’s his mistake then you should ask him to pay you back. But if you both hit it in the hotel room and it just so happened to be on him when you guys got caught, I’d split the cost.
39
u/pinkbev71 10h ago
Exactly! I stay in nice places all the time and have never set off a smoke alarm. He must've been smoking a joint
76
u/detective-briscoe 14h ago
Right? Something about this story doesn’t seem right. I have hit a weed pen in many many hotels and it doesn’t set off fire alarms.
25
u/No_Hospital_5588 9h ago
I was actually thinking this. Haven't had a lot of experience with weed pens but my little experience definitely didn't result in an unmistakable smell of weed and then the fire alarm going off lol. Wondering if he just told her it was and it was a pipe or something idk.
18
u/cheeselover214 8h ago
Exactly, weed pens don’t smoke or smell like normal joints or blunts. They were definitely smoking actual joints
6
u/CoffeeChocolateBoth 4h ago edited 4h ago
And if he was smoking a joint she would have seen it unless he was hiding in the bathroom doing it, but she would have 100% smelled it!
I was in Walmart yesterday and a dude walked past me and I said to my husband, he smells like skunk weed! I know that scent a mile away, my neighbor smokes it daily, all day long, the wind blows our way and good lord! Whew, it's named that for a reason. It was clinging to that dude in Walmart! LOLI swear, I'm going to have to start looking to see if POSTERS are a new account! This one stinks to high heaven. LOL
2
u/cheeselover214 4h ago
Exactly, and not just that but I think she’s putting the blame on him, but if he was smoking actual weed and this post isn’t fake, there is no way she didn’t realise lol. As soon as a joint is pulled out I can smell it from a mile away.
26
u/Sensitive-Spot5960 13h ago
yeah i was thinking that too!! unless he's chain smoking it, not inhaling, and blowing directly on the fire alarm, which doesn't seem realistic. i've also hit my pen in many places you're not supposed to, that had fire alarms, with no issues ever. seems like a user error lol. OP if this is real next time tell him to try to ghost it more and space out hits more so there's less smoke. and yeah reimburse too

u/dkortman 6h ago
I was thinking the same thing. I don’t smoke weed anymore (or pens) but I do vape nicotine, and I’ll hit it in a hotel room. But I make sure to not blow huge clouds every time lol. I just kinda hold it in and zero it out. If you’re in a no smoking room/hotel and you’re fogging up the whole room, yeah you’re an idiot.
15
u/New_Nobody9492 9h ago
This was my first thought…. I smoke a weed pen inside my work in store rooms and the coolers…. I have done this for over five years, no one has said anything. I also work three jobs, so it’s not always the same environment.
He was smoking more than a weed pen.
We are being lied to.
5
u/Nervous-Carpet7035 7h ago
That’s what I was thinking. My pen does make the room get a bit smoky, but never THAT foggy. And I hit it a LOT sometimes. Not once has a smoke alarm went off. He was smoking flowers or dabs or SOMETHING, but it wasn’t a pen.
7
u/Aunt_Eggma 7h ago
Probably a dab pen tbh
3
u/bustacappa22 2h ago
Even with a dab rig you wouldn’t be filling a room with smoke let alone a pen

My ex and his friend set off the whole floor’s fire alarm at a hotel room I paid for by vaping. But they were using old school “cloud mod” nic vapes. I’m suspicious about the amount of weed pen vapor it would take to trip a fire alarm, but if he was doing it right below the sensor it could happen. I’m lucky it was just nic. The employees accepted our stupid lie about candles and I paid the fee without being kicked out of the convention hotel
3
u/FranklyDefeated 6h ago
If it was a flower vaporizer like a pax (small version of like the volcano), maybe, you can definitely smell it a little bit when "smoking", but I may be showing my age a bit here as they've definitly gone a bit out of style compared to the nicotine like vapes.
I've also nic vaped in every hotel I've been in for the last 8 years or so and never set anything off, but I use MTL (nautilus) so I'm not blowing clouds, if I'm in an airport or airplane bathroom, I hold it in until nothing really comes out and never set anything off.
3
u/Alternative-Tea964 6h ago
Hotels are trying to clamp down on vape usage in rooms due to odor and residue left by the vapour on walls, mirrors, windows etc. Many are adding vape detectors to rooms. Hotels are also adding cleaning fees for guests that have been caught vaping.
3
u/Chefzay 5h ago
Look up the Halo Detector. They do more than just that apparently. They also can listen and detect “aggression”. We are being surveilled by the hotel I would say illegally it’s actually crazy.

Would hotels put vape alarms in rooms like schools have in bathrooms?
3
u/sleepyleperchaun 6h ago
I doubt it. They likely don't care except to the extent of safety/odor. They don't want to kick people out but need to follow some level of safety guideline. OP seems like they are just blowing it out their ass with this entire post

Depends on the type of smoke alarm....we have an alarm at home on the landing ceiling near the bathroom door. If I leave that door open after a shower, the steam will cause the alarm will go off about 50% of the time....And visually, it doesn't appear to need hardly any steam for it to happen either...

If he hasn’t apologized profusely and reimbursed you, you need to walk. He doesn’t respect you, he doesn’t respect rules, and he doesn’t respect the people who ran the hotel. He doesn’t seem to respect anyone. How old is he and how long have you been seeing him?

5

2
u/Extreme_Medium4235 3h ago
THIS! I’m honestly confused by OPs entitlement on this post.. if she was out running errands and he did this then yeah I’d be mad at the BF, but if she was complicit in it’d that’s what happens when you do dumb shit lol. You can’t be that clueless on standard hotel rules.. and then act shocked on what happens when they’re broken. Seems like she’s ready to just dump all the blame on him.
10
u/Songisaboutyou 15h ago
I use to clean hotel rooms a few decades ago. If someone smoked in a non smoking room it’s more than just the fire alarm gets reset. We had to scrub every inch of the walls, ceilings, and use stuff on every piece of furniture. It costs the hotels lots of money to make sure that their non smoking rooms can be booked by anyone who needs them. For instance some people could have a major asthma attack and the hotels are held responsible. Your boyfriend needs to pay you back for it all
10
6
u/punk_rock_barbie 7h ago
As a weed smoker, there’s no way a vape set off the smoke alarm AND made the room reek that bad. Again- it’s a VAPE not actual smoke that lingers. I’m calling BS on this one.
3
u/Regular-Table4242 15h ago
Find a grown man, not a little boy that smokes weed in a room instead of going for a walk
3
u/Flux_My_Capacitor 14h ago
You want to dispute the charge?
THAT IS FRAUD.
You are responsible for the room because you paid for it with your credit card. That’s how this works.
Your boyfriend is an idiot.
Dump his ass and find someone else.
3
u/gretala77 11h ago
Why did you not do something to stop him? If you paid for the room you are responsible for it. If you told him to stop and he didn't, you should have immediately reported it yourself.
As someone in the hotel business, I have to agree with what the other commenter said. When someone smokes in a room, the cleanup is extremely costly and time consuming. If you have another guest arriving the same day, it's a nightmare. If you don't get the smell out before the next guest's arrival, the hotel will also be providing a refund to the next guest.
It sucks that it's an expensive lesson, but at the end of the day it's your responsibility.
3
u/Select-Internal-3141 9h ago
If your boyfriend finds nothing wrong with what he did and doesn't try to make it up to you , such as, repaying for everything + more gestures for ruining the trip, then you and him I don't think are compatible. I also know people like this won't change any time soon. Maybe in 5 or 10+ yrs if he grows up, but you'll be dealing with stuff like this the whole time and there is a possibility that he still might not change.
You won't win the credit card dispute against the hotel. I would say the only way to get your money back is to sue him.
3
3
u/Hcmp1980 8h ago
On what grounds would you dispute it?
2
u/TheDankMacabre 6h ago
Right? It would literally be fraud to try and do so with your credit card too, so don't try that route.
Boyfriend needs to pay up.
He can pay for weed, he can pay her back and be cold shaking turkey for a little. (Okay, that's mean, but cut back hard and show serious penance.)

3
u/CrustySailor1964 7h ago
YOU owe the hotel their cleaning charge. FWIW the cleaning charges for smoking in the rental car and a couple of the hotels on our recent trip was $450. At our ages the only noxious emissions we emit come from the other end so this isn’t a thing for us. There’s no sense disputing the charges with the hotel and you’re getting off light.
Your boyfriend ABSOLUTELY OWES you the money for that hotel, the $250, the second hotel and an apology. If he doesn’t agree AND pay you then your next weekend getaway needs to be with a proper boyfriend.
3
u/Drokann1567 4h ago
If Id have been so stupid I'd have offered to cover everything from the get go. If I can't do it now, I will make sure of it that you get it back. And also because I am so stupid will get you something as a way of saying sorry.

I’m wondering when he started doing that if you told him it’s a non smoking room and to stop. Y’all could have gotten a smoking room I would think. If you didn’t say anything to him, learn to speak up when someone, especially a significant other, is being disrespectful.
Beyond that, as everyone is saying, he should be paying you back and you should be reevaluating your relationship to confirm he’s worth the bother. He smoked in the room. Those are the consequences assuming they were in the terms (which they almost definitely were).

You can't get that money back and even trying to may result in more money spent. You(your bf really) did it, its not a mistake or fraudulent.
I traveled for work years ago. Was 22 amd was working out in my room (brought adjustable free weights because hotel gyms can suck) and had a co worker also doing it. I was non smoking room he wasnt and went to light up and we had a full on 3 min argument that ended in him going outside to smoke.
Wether you want to admit it or not, you are to some extent also at fault if you did not tell him not to. If you did and he didnt listen then you have a different problem to adress.
The BF should be paying either way. If he cant pay but can afford weed then that is really all you need to ever know about the guy.
2
u/IAmGroot6936 6h ago
Bf should reimburse. The hotel was just following policy, otherwise all of their room would stink like your bfs "incense".
Regardless of what path you choose though, you should consider whether or not you want to be in a relationship with a liar.
2
u/zer0_zer0_nin9 6h ago

A dispute on the charge is not the way to go here and would not be successful. The charge is valid and you admit he smoked in the room.
Your recourse to get your money back is small claims court.
And of course you should rid yourself of your selfish boyfriend. I use a weed pen too and I do not smoke off it in non smoking places, let alone smoke so much of it that it set off an alarm. You can do better than that!

u/thenamelessking1 4h ago

I don’t understand why people lie about such small things as if no one else hits weed pens and knows that can’t smoke up a room. Smoking up a room is from something actually lit and live; a bowl, a joint, a blunt, etc. Advice based on lies will not help you.
Hotels actions were deserved, ask your bf to cover it but it seems like he’s not the type to own up if he didn’t even at least split the costs with you before consequences..
If you continue to choose to be with him despite his immaturity, that’s is your decision to continue to struggle with him but obviously you shouldn’t and I hope you are strong enough to just walk away.
No accountability = man child = not a partner.

2
2
u/Extreme_Medium4235 3h ago
Ok I feel like it’s one thing for the boyfriend to smoke in the room while OP isn’t in the room, then yeah I’d want him to cover it.
But if she’s hanging with him while smoking, then she’s also assuming the risks of getting caught unless she told him to stop and he simply refused. There’s a ton of no smoking signs in most hotels, you can’t act shocked that your bf got you in trouble for smoking in the room if you’re watching him do it for upwards of the 2 hours they were there.
This is just part of being an adult and knowing if you play stupid games, you risk winning stupid prizes.
2
u/Substantial_Papaya93 3h ago
The dispute will not go in your favor hotels and credit companies do this all the time.
Also you should expect the cleaning fee for the room that will also, likely, be added.
Unfortunately for you you have found out how we are responsible for those with us and that they may not be reasonable when it comes to their actions or to the consequences of those actions.
I know the pens and weed are much more socially acceptable nowadays, but you may want to reconsider your values and what you want out of a partner, mate and husband. This behavior is not conducive to a long term relationship.

Think of it this way: the 250 is the tax for having a dumbass for a boyfriend. You deserve better. Move the hell on.

You try and dispute that charge you will end up in serious trouble likely… why was your first thought anything other than to make him PAY!!

Listen your boyfriend should pay without you asking, if he doesn’t. He doesn’t care about you and you should leave him,
because this will lead to more headaches and times where you have to fend for yourself when you’re suppose to look after each other
EDIT: Since he’s a stoner he’s likely going to say I’ll pay you back and time will pass without a cent. Give him a deadline and say the hotel require it by this date so it’s serious.

Why do you keep saying “smoking” if it was a weed pen? Is there some confusion?
If the alarm automatically calls the fire department and they have to come out, that’s what the $250 is for. Turning off the alarm is incidental.

u/TaLilFrog 13h ago
He has to pay you back, he was so stupid lol. This time he has to pay it all because he did wrong and got you kicked out, but in general you should always split vacation costs.

u/One_Replacement3787 13h ago
What is there to dispute? Guests were smoking in a non smoking room. Did that not happen?
Is this the first time either of you are staying in a hotel?
Youre basically shit out of luck. But id be expecting your BF to cover the hotel for the rest of your stay, pay you the 250 for smoking fine and move on. If between the two of you you cant come to that exact conclusion, you probably should look for a better BF.

u/UrbanMuffin 13h ago
He should reimburse you, fully. Also, there’s a million warnings about smoking at most hotels. Did you tell him to stop?
1
u/Kukka63 13h ago
Why would you challenge the charge???? Absolutely everyone knows the no smoking rule in hotels, I can't believe that you didn't kick him out and tell him to smoke outdoors. Yes, he should pay but since smoking is clearly more important than having a lovely time with you, I doubt if he's going to.

If your boyfriend was hitting the wees within 2 hours of getting to the hotel, then there are obvious issues anyway.

Don't dispute the charge as it was legitimate, you could take the boyfriend to small claims. Regardless get rid of him as he's a dumbass.

You're dating an inconsiderate jerk who doesn't take responsibility for his actions. He should we on his knees apologising and paying back the lost hotel fee. You just had a really valuable insight into his character. You lost $250 dollars but saved a fortune in lawyer fees down the line, because this is not a man you want to sign a lease or marriage license with, much less raise kids. Lucky escape.

How much do you love him? He seems like an idiot to he smoking in a hotel room. If I were you I would just cut my losses and dump him

Boyfriend should reimburse and pay for the next holiday if ever you are willing to take the man child on another trip.

$250 to turn the fire alarm off is cheap compared to where I’m from. It’s $2000 per truck. Average of 2 trucks for a building like a hotel

As others have already mentioned or made reference to, you would be doing yourself a favor by dumping him.

What I don’t understand in this story is that every decent human in this situation, boyfriend or not would offer to pay the costs right away. Did he not do that?

Wtf kind of weed pen yall got setting off smoke alarms . I smoke all goddam day in hotel rooms and have never had an issue pens bongs whatever

u/OldGroan 10h ago
Your boyfriend needs to reimburse you the money. He is the cause of the problem. With his attitude I suggest reconsidering your relationship.

What kind of weed pen can produce enough to set off a fire alarm and make the room foggy? Honestly sounds like you're minimising how bad it was.
Id say your bf owes you a whack of money and a proper apology

I know it seems kinda harsh but if he doesn't offer to pay without you having to demand I'd be seriously considering whether or not he's the type person you want to spend your life with. What I'd be seeing is that he's created a problem for you and is not willing to fix it or offer you assistance. That means he lacks empathy and the ability to take care of you the way you take care of him. A relationship is a two-way street and that gets more important as time goes by. If he lacks empathy or basic respect for you, that only gets worse when you get more responsibilities together and the things you do behind the scenes weigh you down and get taken for granted. Let his actions show you how he feels about you and act accordingly. My qualifications for giving this advice are a ten year relationship, five of those years in marriage, and a divorce at 29.

I’m guessing this isn’t the first time he’s done something that he obviously shouldn’t? Time for you to move on.

u/SmoothCoderr 9h ago
Sounds like he owes you money and hopefully he learns his lesson not to smoke in hotels. All he had to do was step outside smh

The only way you have to be reimbursed, is if your BF takes responsibility and pays you.
If he doesn't take responsibility, or tries to blame someone of thing else, I'd suggest he might not be the kind of man you want in your life.

You wont wina dispute . There is a reason for no smoking of any sort in hotel room. Id dump the boyfriend and consider it a very expensive lesson

u/LoubyAnnoyed 9h ago
Get your money back from the BF, and then get your life back from him. His behaviour is peak disrespectful.

I've hit my pens in multiple different leagues of hotel + a cruise ship and have never once set off a fire alarm. unless he was literally blowing the smoke into the sensor or taking blinkers. Not once have I been able to fog up a room with one either.
Aside from that, Make him reimburse you all fees and make him pay for another hotel. Not fair on you for him to do that.

Your boyfriend should pay you, and if he doesn’t- he should no longer be your boyfriend. Simple

Former front office manager from 5* hotels in the UK here. Fire department doesn't need to attend site to turn off the alarm, but all hotels do charge if you're caught smoking. To kick you out IMO seems extreme, probably because its weed rather than a usual cig. You won't win if you fight it unfortunately, no. It'll be a standard hotel policy.

Boyfriend needs to take responsibility and pay for everything. The fact that he didn’t offer to is not a good sign.

If hasn’t already offered to cover the cost then that’s sad. You should def ask for him to reimburse you. If he can’t afford it all now, then have been pay you back 100/mo or something.
