I've started needledropping (digitizing vinyl, kinda like ripping a CD but more involved) by running my turntable's audio output through a scarlet 2i2 and capturing on my computer with Audacity.

I feel like I may have just unlocked an audiophile cheatcode here. By quietly digitizing (I listen as it plays on headphones) I am then free to play the file at high volumes using my DAP (JM21). so I'm getting the best of both worlds. High volume playback without risk of the needle jumping, almost like from a CD, AND the incredibly dynamic and spacial mastering that comes with Vinyl.

The best part is now I can take my Vinyl with me wherever I go!

So yeah, a few months ago i noticed that my collection isn't as big and diverse as i wanted, so i decided to ask my friends to gift me a record for my birthday. I have made a list of the records i already had in my collection as to not get duplicates and shared it with my girlfriend, who then shared it with the group. Basic rules were: choose your(as in the person gifting) favorite album, if i already had one in my collection, then just pick something interesting and cool. Oh, and no picture disks. Here are the results. Had a lot of fun putting everything in proper inner and outer sleeves and now slowly enjoying spinning every single one of them. Cheers!

I have basically the whole Bowie catalog and I listen to many of them frequently. This however is a very nicely mastered collection and it deserves a spin outside of the second room so I brought it down to have a listen while working this morning. Seemed like a good way to start this Thursday morning

Found this at my local for cheap cheap a few months ago and was so stoked — it’s in great shape, barely any surface noise, and the mastering blows my 1976 1st press out of the water. People love to shit on the CBS Mastersounds series, and I don’t doubt there are bad releases from that series — but none of the albums I’ve heard from it have left me anything less than impressed. Silk Degrees has never sounded so damn good.

Boz Scaggs — Silk Degrees (1976, Columbia Records / 1980, CBS Mastersounds Half-Speed Master)

I really like this album, but it‘s crazy that they sell this for 55€ and it‘s not a gatefold, no heavyweight vinyl or sleeve, just one insert of the original album cover, nothing we haven’t seen before.

I have an opportunity to buy an approximate 1800 albums, but have no idea on "fair price"? I know all the standard things to look for like genre, condition, pressings, value vs filler album, median pricing etc. but haven't bought a collection this size before.

Long story on this collection, but I think a lady ended up with this collection through divorce and wants it gone, but not bad enough to give away, she knows what she has. Lol

What would you pay?

Looking at the albums on Discogs now and it looks like 40-50% have a median of $15 and up, rest are good but your typical filler albums you see, the mass produced but still in $3-10 median range. There are some (maybe 50-75) on the rarer side with median $50 and up, especially some of the metal and jazz albums.

I usually by older/used records by just digging at my local shops. However, I also often want the newly released records from popular artists. Like Hayley Williams new record from last year for example. My local shops do a good job stocking new stuff like this, but to me it makes more sense to buy from the her online store and directly support the artist. Maybe she has enough money though

So, Ive had this album on CD since release and loved it. When it was released vinyl was on the way out and it had a limited press, so copies go for hundreds, daft prices.

So I nearly fell off my chair when I found out that there was a limited RSD release of this album. Rather perversely, the release was USA only, where the band have approximately zero profile and fans (as evidenced by RSD copies still languishing across the USA ) but not released in the UK where they have a cult following.

The coloured vinyl is described as jungle swirl, I'd call it water that paintbrushes have been rinsed in, it's an ugly choice, but nonetheless am overjoyed to have bagged this album for under £30.

My vote: The Beach OST deserves more than a cd and a (mighty fine) 2 track wax promo.

Collection so far 😍

Loads of my favourite bands have released new albums this year so very happy to finally have these three. Ordered a while back but had to wait to the failure re press to come out. Location lost has been one of my favourite albums so far this year so glad to finally have it. Hopefully they come over to the Uk so I can see them for the first time. Won’t have the same problem with monolord or slift, should be seeing them later this year.

It’s always fun discovering new music, and these days that’s happening more and more through YouTube videos (for me anyway). So I thought I’d share links to three of my favorite YouTube channels focusing on record collecting.

What’s In My Bag
Fun series put out by Amoeba Music (Record store with locations in Berkeley, Los Angeles, and San Francisco California. So many incredible musicians have appeared on this series for more than a decade and I’ve been introduced to so many amazing albums and artists. This particular episode introduced me to Two Sevens Clash by Culture, which I ended up buying at the Amoeba in Hollywood.

Record Rooms
Great series put out by Patrick The Pack Rat out of Canada. He interviews various record collectors about their collections and what got them into buying records in the first place. This particular episode was a cool look behind the scenes of a College Radio Station’s physical media archive. Helen Young, the Station Manager, also showed off some of her records from her personal collection that included a French Synthwave compilation called BIPP by Born Bad Records. I tracked it down and actually bought it a couple months later from the label / record store in Paris while on vacation.

Expert Of None
Really cool 4 part series (part 4 will be recorded next month) with Cut Chemist where he plays records that were integral to his musical education. I’m not a DJ or music producer, so it was fascinating hearing and seeing how he composes through samples.
