Awwww yisss
Now if I own it on Xbox is it cross entitlement?
Edit: Holy shit it is.
If you already own a digital copy of these games, you can now play them on PC or handhelds like the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.
Only one not showing for me yet is Conker.
Wonder if this opens the door for a Live and Reloaded mod that restores the profanity.

u/jayoshoowa87 3h ago
Sooo I'm old and I have physical copies of these...does that help me in anyway? Or if I just buy them digitally?
14
u/FinanceBig6328 3h ago
Hmm, with the talks about digitizing physical games... might just work.
5
u/Pleasant-Speed-9414 3h ago
I think the rumor is that will only work with discs on Xbox One and forward, since my impression is the license is in the disc…where as OG and 360 games don’t have that embedded on the disc.
7
u/TheParmesan 3h ago
It’s alright, I’ll give Microsoft money for Crimson Skies any day.
5
u/Pleasant-Speed-9414 3h ago
I actually scooped crimson skies physical about a month ago. I haven’t played but looks really fun

TIL Xbox had handhelds
2
u/enjoyingcurve46 25m ago
They are not technically xbox handhelds. Its an rog ally with xbox buttons and logo, that runs a special version of windows to better mimmick a console experience and comes with 3 months of gamepass. This version of windows is live on all pcs now.
Tldr Its an ROG asus handheld with xbox branding

Spent many years playing both entries with my brothers. My brother and I would always play twisted system in practice to see who could beat the high score we man

u/Cereal_Bandit 3h ago
My friend had the demo and we played it allllll the time. Eventually someone bought the game. So tight.

Oh my god please do Ninja Gaiden Black
3
u/WhiteRaven-17 4h ago
This and a whole ton of Sega games are on my wishlist
3
u/rondo_martin 3h ago
Yeah there's a few Sega gems stuck on the OG Xbox. Otogi 1 and 2, Jet Set Radio Future, Gunvalkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta
2
u/SkylarPopo 3h ago
I just bought Max Payne 1 and 2. Now I wonder if I should wait and see if they add achievements to them before I start playing them.
3
u/Schmenza 2h ago
I'd go ahead and play them now. I got a feeling they're going to be slowly adding these with 1st party games getting priority
15
u/inkyblinkypinkysue 4h ago
This is a win for Xbox. I think we should be striving for all games to be playable on current hardware and if you bought Halo on the original Xbox there should be a way to play it on the newest Xbox console or PC without buying it again.
Maybe that’s unrealistic, but almost every game in existence until you get to the 360/PS2 era will run on a PC via emulation so there is a way.
2
u/I3eforeLife 3h ago
I don’t see a way for them to confirm that you bought an original copy of Blinx back in 2002. They would need to be able to verify receipts with a distributor and both the distributor and transaction history may not exist anymore. Most companies do not keep transaction history indefinitely
1
u/inkyblinkypinkysue 3h ago
I assume you'd have to still have the disc to verify ownership for it to work otherwise yeah, impossible. But then I could see people scamming the system with CD-Rs and other nonsense...
1
u/Jasperbeardly11 3h ago
So this is just me talking. What if you uploaded or had a live stream of you taking the game and putting it in an Xbox of some sort and it plays. The Xbox is linked to your account. The company can confirm you did this. Then it's added to your account after being confirmed.
1
u/inkyblinkypinkysue 2h ago
That could work but probably a non-starter because of the cost. They would need to employ a team of "verification experts" or whatever you call them to do this around the clock.

u/SapphireRoseRR 2h ago
So... Steam?
Or am I stuck with a game pass and/or Windows store?

Getting it on PC is great because I would love to play some BackCompat titles on my xbox ally x.

Its a good thing thats just a pc then.
If you already own a digital copy of these games, you can now play them on PC or handhelds like the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.

FUUUUSSSIIIOOOON FREEENZY. Gah I remember jamming out to that soundtrack when I didn't have anyone else to play with

3
u/Life-Willingness-86 3h ago
So it's... they're letting people emulate the first Xbox finally? Neat.
3
u/Rebelhero 3h ago
CRIMSON SKIES?!
I really hope they remake the original PC version too...
3
u/oatmeal_dude 3h ago
Can we possibly get multiplayer to work?? That'd be a dream come true. Best dog fighting game ever made imo.
3
3
u/Inevitable_unedible 3h ago
Damn. No Panzer Dragoon Orta or Ninja Gaiden Black. Still, this is the direction I was hoping for. I still keep an Xbox One X hooked up for a few games.
3
u/scarfleet 2h ago
Interesting.
Looks like our first real hint of what the hybrid Xbox/PC ecosystem will look like.

Why tho? It's an Xbox layer and it doesn't make any sense without their xbox layer
2
2
u/Exorcist-138 3h ago
Man the console hardcores are strange about this, I like the ability of being able to go to the best platform to play games I already own on Xbox… why be against this?

u/m0us3c0p 3h ago
I've got a physical copy of Fusion Frenzy sitting in a box. Can I use that as proof of ownership for a license to play the game on PC?
1
u/GamePitt_Rob 2h ago
No.
It's following the PS format. If you own them digitally, you can play on all platforms. If you don't, you either need to buy it or have a GP sub that includes them
2
u/CattuccinoVR 3h ago
I wish there were more games like Crimson skies an enjoyable flying adventure.
2
2
2
u/Electric-Mountain 3h ago
Now this is a good way to get more money out of these titles. Just put them on Steam.
1
u/AstronomerIT 18m ago
No, they could stay where they belong. This xbox emulation layer comes from their xbox ecosystem and there's no reason or possibility to put them without that layer
2
u/pipboy_warrior 3h ago
Just give us Lost Odyssey. It remains a fantastic JRPG that so many haven't played yet because it's stuck been stuck on Xbox.
2
u/NewJeansBunnie 3h ago
So theoretically if I buy one of these games I could play it on PC or an Xbox?
2
1
2
2
2
u/iAreRoach 3h ago
Isn't this just releasing them on PC? Backwards compatibility would imply that I could play those games off my old xbox discs on PC. Not that this isn't good news.
2
u/newbrevity 2h ago
I will say one thing Xbox has done right is making Xbox and PC unified for game licenses.
1
u/firedrakes 2h ago
Ps did that for s very short time. But fumble the software support for it so badly .
2
u/thekamenman 2h ago
I dreamed this day would come.
TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect
Advent Rising
Rare Replay
Lost Odyssey
Ninja Gaiden Black
KOTOR 1 and 2
Play Anywhere would go crazy on these games.
2
3
u/EasyRecognition 3h ago
I mean, Sony abandoned the market, why not take it over.
Maybe we'll see Midnight Club LA one day.
3
u/WhiteRaven-17 3h ago
The big endgame stuff for me are rare replay and Ninja Gaiden Black and Vanilla 2
Really though, I am concerned it’s gonna be just as slow as Nintendo and Sony’s Gen 6 output.
1
u/MotherPerk 3h ago
Hasnt Team Ninja stated they dont have the original code for those games anymore?
1
u/WhiteRaven-17 3h ago
Depending on how this works, they might not need it. We’ll have to wait and see how the breakdowns explain it, but if it really is just running the finished game on the Xbox store, ideally they can just use that
1
u/Gregore997 3h ago
That is awesome for people who dont know how or cant be bothered to emulate games
1
u/TipAffectionate9785 3h ago
Man Ninja Gaiden Black at last and alongside the Ninja Gaiden II Recomp we are eating good, i hope we can increase the performance of the games and we can get 360 as well since Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are gems
1
1
u/moonbiitsu 3h ago
If we can hack one of them, we'll have an Xbox emulator straight form MS themselves.
Crazy.
1
u/FlarblesGarbles 3h ago
This looks like something they've got to be doing if the Helix is just going to be a PC. You can't make a PC into an Xbox without backwards compatibility.
1
1
u/LaylaLegion 3h ago
PC gamer: “Wow! Now I can play these Xbox classic games on my PC!”
*mods the game to give Blinx big fat naturals*
PC gamer: “Perfection.”

u/Vagamer01 3h ago
If they give us options to do what Emulators do (upscale, texture packs, etc.) then this will be good

Conkers live and reloaded with be interesting to play again, although i bet the multiplayer will still be dead.
1
1
u/mikethetiger_ 3h ago
I’m hoping this gains a lot of traction and we see a ton more games becoming available, just like the backwards compatibility rush of the last few Xbox generations. I’ve held off on getting an Ally X, because only a handful of games in my library are Play Anywhere titles.
1
u/RosaCanina87 3h ago
Nice. This is a cool surprise. Not really a huge fan of those particular games (still need to play Conker one day...) but the whole idea is cool. Now... PD Orta anyone?

Okay nice I guess. Like I’m not mad that it is an option. Could’ve come out with way more than 4 games to launch this ”feature?” Wish if I owned the physical disc and a drive for the PC I could pop it in and play it backwards compatible that way as well. Until then I’ll just keep my disc and systems and play them that way.
3
u/Obscure_Octopuss 4h ago
It takes work to make this stuff happen...
They don't just press a button and then a game is backwards compatible... especially titles that never even launched on PC!
2
u/Duneking1 3h ago
I know. Yes the Xbox and after were build on the Windows platform and generally can be ported fairly easily. Much of this is really about licensing the IPs from the developers and also those developers paying people to make sure the ports don’t have issues in general that don’t always translate to a PC even though the controllers should in theory not provide any issue.
I just think that is barely an announcement. It’s all first party Microsoft games, no announcement of future titles from 3rd parties, and it still only the digital licenses. It’s not great, but it’s also not exactly bad. Just not a lot.
1
u/BoringCabinet 2h ago
They can't add 3rd party titles if the 3rd party doesn't allow it.
Honestly, people are never satisfied with anything these days.
-10
u/GoyimDiddler 4h ago
Yes yes kill your console even more lol
2
u/Millennialnerds 3h ago
I know I’m confused on what Xbox players think this is great for them but then I remember most are just pc fans now.
2
1
u/UnusuallyShapedChair 4h ago
Just go full on publisher at this point. Day one releases, gamepass and now their bc program, every single thing the console offers is now in pc. Why even bother with hardware when you keep kneecapping it?
1
u/ZeroBrutus 3h ago
So that people who dont use a PC for gaming/want a convenient living room option can still be brought in.
1
1
u/JohnnyHendo 4h ago
Honestly, they've been trying for the past 7 years minimum, but arguably the past 13. Might as well keep going with it lol
0
u/Iggy_Slayer 4h ago
Yeah they still don't really get it. Like sony adds trophies to ps1/2/psp ports to ps5 as well but they're not putting them on PC.

How about they get around to doing a decent release of Halo that has split screen. In fact, how about they finally do what they should have done with the MCC, actually put some time and effort into the package, and add bots to the multiplayer so we can play whichever Halo game we want to play without either being stuck waiting for other players, or facing off against sweaty try-hards.
Not really that excited about playing games that would have flopped on PC the first time around.
1
u/ElderSmackJack 3h ago
How about learning that the people responsible for those things are, and I cannot stress this enough, NOT involved in those things IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. Maybe try that? Maybe try that the company doing Halo has nothing to do with this whatsoever?
Noooo. You’d rather bitch and moan.
0
u/NBrakespear 3h ago
"the people responsible for those things"
You mean Microsoft.
Who own Halo. And who, in fact, created a team of sorts called 343 to take Halo development and general management in-house after Bungie left.
Maybe, since you're stressing so much, you should just chill out instead of barking slightly mad, rather incorrect things in uppercase at total strangers over fairly lukewarm takes.
Yes, I'd rather bitch and moan about Microsoft's abandonment and mishandling of their biggest franchise in face of rather lacklustre news about Microsoft bringing us deeply average titles from yesteryear.
1
u/ElderSmackJack 3h ago
Lmao. No, dude. Microsoft AT LARGE is not responsible for MCC working correctly. That would be 343 (Halo Studios). The team working on backwards compatibility for Xbox does not work for 343.
You’re clueless.
