Undertaker and Kane used to scare me as a kid in the 90s. I really thought they were taking people to the underworld at that time. Also thought Kane was a real demon because he always had that mask, plus the fires.

Lore time.
If you read the book "Witches of the Bog" you find that the 3 sisters actually had a mother witch, too powerful for that region. Long story short, the three sister witches trap the soul of their mother inside a tree which you encounter.
Now, if you talk to the citizens and roam the area AROUND the tree, you'll find bodies and can interact with geralt to find what killed them. The soul of the mother witch, which is trapped in the tree, needs to be freed.
So, you have two options. Free the mother, she fulfills her promise (open ended IMO as the lore describes her to be way more sick than the 3 witches) and takes the orphan sacrifice away from the 3 sisters but the sisters have twisted to baron's wife to be attached to these children (the questline describes how she got rid of her unborn child) and she goes mad.
If you don't, the orphans die.

That was one of the most infuriating fights I've ever experienced in any video game I ever played. I can't even remember how many times I attempted it before I won. If I ever get around to playing the remaster, I'll probably avoid it altogether.

I got this game for Christmas 2007 and literally did not stop playing past new years. I get to this part and my mom yells at me to stop playing and get over to the table for dinner. I genuinely was so mindfucked I could hardly verbally react or respond, Idk how much time had passed. She ran downstairs to check on me/possibly whup my ass and she looked concerned for my wellbeing. I must've been a bit catatonic

The first time I went through that section I almost put the game down out of sheer "wtf, seriously?" lol it's very early section where you have like 10 handgun ammo and one healing spray.
If you're brand new you probably don't even have that and you wouldn't know it's on a timer. The the chainsaw fucker comes out and it's like they just want to soft lock you out of the rest of the game.
Don't get me wrong, not saying it's bad at all, the opposite actually, but it's intimidating the first go around.

I am not a big fan of the game, but this moment, and the later scene of a metal concert, on top of a bus, in the middle of a storm, while fighting a bunch of shadow monsters....are two of my favorite moments in video games.

A writer has to write himself out of his own story but is limited to the genre he finds himself in and how “believable” the plot is. The gameplay is pretty standard resident evil over the shoulder resource management but the atmosphere of 2 is especially fantastic

When you are in the section looking for supplies I was just curious, so I used listening mode and got a good glimpse of it through the metal door. It was funny because that was the only thing keeping me alive at that moment. Also my first playthrough I thought you had to stay in the room you fell in. Realized after I beat it you could run around to different areas.

Oh I absolutely loved the game’s story. It’s my favorite game of all time and I replay it at least once a year. Definitely gotta be in a specific mood for that playthrough though because it’s so dark and depressing. I always compare it to playing through a Cormac McCarthy novel.

Definitely an extremely emotional and dark game. I'm glad the story resonated with you. It's just too depressing for me to touch again any time soon lol

IMHO, people (bigots aside) didn't like the game because of all the suffering from the main characters, even though the suffering was the point. Several times they are offered chances to cut their losses and make the best of their post-apocolyptic situations and just be happy, and instead they choose to plunge further into misery.

I could see that. Everything about the game is meant to grab hold of your darkest emotions and it just doesn’t let go. It’s relentlessly brutal and depressing and it highlights just how messy human emotions can get. Even the combat, which is IMO the best combat system ever put in a game to date, preys on those same emotions with how brutal and visceral it is. Enemies shriek in pain when a limb is blown off, they choke on their own blood when shot in the neck, they freak out when you kill one of their friends in front of them, etc. Gaming is typically an escape from the horrors of reality but this game is a nonstop assault of just how horrific a post apocalyptic war and revenge can get.

Yeah I will say I had 2 of those moments in ER.
1st was taking the elevator to Siofra, i was awestruck. At the time i expected the map would be approximately 3 limgraves big (1 limgrave, 1 limgrave sized caelid, 1 limgrave sized area after Godrick to access the tree). I was awestruck.
Then, after the last map fragment but before fighting the fire giant, I was like “okay. That’s everything. I’ve been everywhere, more or less.” I decided to hunt down the keys for the belfry so i could see where the other portals went (my first portal was the crucible knight in siofra) and when i got to the secret Farum Azula sneak peak i literally fell over laughing because i was astounded. My friends in party chat all had a “no spoilers” agreement so all i could say was “it just keeps going! Miyazaki you son of a bitch you’ve done it again!”

When all the towers started sprouting up in BOTW after you unlock the first one on the Great Plateau. I thought the Great Plateau was the whole map and everything outside of it was just background scenery that’s rendered in.

Meeting Vigil in ME1. I replayed the entire conversation the first time I met the character.
Gears of War when Dom finds Maria. Seeing how broken Dom is in the following games because of it. Grief and depression is a very human thing.
Dragon Age 1 Alistair the hardened king making the ultimate sacrifice and the huge sense of empty and hollow victory in the epilogue because of it.
Baldur's Gate 2 ToB meeting Sarevok and purifying his soul and seeing his epilogue play out.
The walking dead trilogy when you control that wee little kid and she reaches safety.
Good ending of Bioshock 1.

more recently, every end chapter cinematic for Black Myth Wukong. Holy shit I was not expecting 100% ART after a big boss fight. Oh my god, each of those animations and songs had me FLOORED the entire time. Masterpiece of a game.

Guardian Ape in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice.
My first souls-like and I LOVED the parry system but the ape fights with bare fists. I had to learn the pattern, try not going too far away for the poop shot and when I had finally got the deathblow animation, that MONKEY was dead in the MOST satisfying way. As dead as can be.
I breathe a sigh of relief, lean back on my chair and go for a glass of water. Come back and that insert curse words STOOD UP, CARRIED HIS BEHEADED HEAD AND KILLS ME WITH FEAR SCREAM LMAO.
I was ASTONISHED, with a reaction similar to this gif because, literally, it was a dead man (monkey) walking.
