The funny thing is that the Dreamcast had a digital store, But it never left Japan, SegaNet in the rest of the world was only for online play
but the Dream Library's servers were shut down in 2003, including the store and download support, So anyone who bought games on that platform back then lost them all

Yea, I have like 10 games for the system and like 50 burned disks for the DreamCast. It was too easy. Loved the system wished Sega tried to compete in the Xbox/Nintendo/PS days.
I remember one game, Grandia 2, I played the burned copy, and got like to the end of the game where it would keep crashing, reburned and still the same issue, tried different release same issue, ran to the store, spend $50 on the game, spent the, not kidding 1 min to finish the game.
Still own that game today.

Yeah I don't believe that for shit mate. If anything, piracy on the Dreamcast actually helped shift a few more units on an already dying console from a company which reputation was already dragged through the mud.
I knew nothing of piracy on the Dreamcast at the time and nor did any of my friends who had it. It was only during the age of the internet where it really came to light, but the console was already dead at that point.
I knew many people who got their PS1 'chipped', and that console sold 100 million units globally at a 3 to 1 ratio VS the N64 which used cartridges to combat piracy.
The PS2 being next gen coming out at a time where DVD players were expensive, it was a no brainer to get a PS2 to get a double whammy benefit. Sega couldn't perpetuate their crappy reputation by coming out with yet another console, so it's no surprise they pulled the plug.

You didn’t have to mod a dreamcast though. That’s a big difference. Plus at PS1 launch not as many people had CD burners. A few years later when the Dreamcast dropped everyone had one.

I definitely agree that claiming the Dreamcast died to Piracy is frankly corporate PR propaganda riding on the myth of Pirated Copy = Lost Sales. People act like easy pirating means EVERYONE does it. And I call total bullshit when I was a kid in the 2000s I was one of a few students who knew how to use Torrents, most of my classmates were still trading official CDs to burn them as MP3s on their PCs.

This, I had a PS 1 and had a huge stack of pirated games. None of them were games I would have ever actually bought. All of the games I actually wanted, i.e. Metal Gear Solid, Square RPG games, Resident Evil, etc, I bought.

Nah man, mIRC and limewire were pretty big too and both had tons of users downloading full ISOs but even before that kazaa and napster had MP3 downloading en masse right at the turn of the century.
But we just rented shit and copied it which is REALLY cheap and easy to do. Everyone on my street had a PS1 chipped and playing burned games and we did it in huge numbers without downloading anything so the internet wasn't really needed to massively pirate something heh.

No, it was lost, for Dream Library games to work you had to go to the online app all the time to start the game, because the Dreamcast didn't have a hard drive
Dream Library sold games and had a system for renting games for $1
But whenever the console was turned off, the game license was lost, due to lack of hard drive, so you always had to download the game into memory
But they were small games, they were classic Sega 2D games

There's a lot of DLC that you need to burn a CD to get now. My understanding is they just copy it over to your VMU.
I'm told there's networks that emulate the Dreamcast's network now, but they're expensive and less accessible than CDs (which you can just find stacks of at thrift stores for like 1$.

Don’t fall for the “you will lose your digital games” propaganda. I’ve been buying digital over 20yrs and haven’t lost access to a single one, my physical games however, I’ve lost a lot along the yrs or some just got damaged/wear n tear or friends didn’t return them etc.
i agree physical should stay to give gamers both options, however I don’t agree this should be at the expense of badmouthing or spreading lies about digital. Movies are a different media form to games that have different licensing. If a game was to be removed from Sony due to “licensing” you can bet it will also be removed from all other platforms, this problem isn’t exclusive to Sony.10

Fair point, digital does have it's strengths in regards to being able to play games for years on end. I can still play all the games I bought for over a decade now.
With that said, the permanence issue of digital is very real. I think the Wii is going to be a hard reality check when Nintendo stops redownload functionality.
That isn't to say that you're library will go "poof" in 10 years (probably) but I do think we shouldn't mistaken buying a library card with actually buying the book.

Interesting, I am pretty sure the Wii Store is done. I tried to boot up my Wii and download some NES games I paid for on there, It could not connect the store even though I was on wi-fi fine. Same with the DS
I know on Xbox, even my first digital Xbox 360 game, I can play on my Series X.
Nintendo, no, even Sony can be hit or miss with the ending of the PS3, and Vita, those days will come soon.
I do know, I can take all my physical games, that I TAKE CARE OF (very little scratches if any) in 20 years, they will still be playable. Not sure about the digital games, esp from Nintendo or Sony.

They're shutting the stores but you'll still be able to access the stuff you've bought previously. Servers will still be going you just won't be able to buy new stuff digitally. The cost to support purchases has exceeded the amount they make from them so it's losing money to keep the store open but they aren't revoking access to anything.

Everything ekse I ever bought digital 29 years ago is still payable.

its really not a weird fear campaign, but it also depends on perspective.
PC players has been going without optical drives for well over a decade now. and PCs by their nature just dont have rigid "generations" like consoles, so games work for way longer, and even then, just boot up a windows xp virtual environment, and enjoy all the Red Alert you want, so to speak.
console players are a little different. due to the architecture of consoles, backwards compatibility is really at the mercy of the manufacturers. for example: to play an OG xbox game on a Series era xbox, it has to be emulated. those older games are not running natively on current hardware. and every generation you go forward, the manufacturer has to do the math on if its worth it to keep dealing with that hassle. and this applies to the big three across the board. so you can download a digital game, its in your account, microsoft isnt denying you the right to play it, but will it play on your xbox 720 in the future?
not to mention, we got the GTA trilogy problem. for the longest, across all major digital storefronts, you could download the golden age classics of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas. but then the remaster happened. the OGs were pulled from storefronts to never be seen again. if you didnt buy them then, you cant now. you only have the terrible, awful remaster. sometimes you get a heads up, sometimes you dont.
im a PC player, who dabbles in consoles here and there, so for now, im largely unaffected, but i can understand the current general angst. the big three arent exactly known for their benevolence, so its not a big leap to imagine some fuck shit happening at some point.

Same it makes no sense, everyone keeps repeating this “Sony is taking your games away”, yet so far we have the following
PT - a free tech demo to a game that ended up being cancelled. Konami wanted it delisted, Sony did so, but if it’s still on your PS4 HDD, it’s still there in 2026 ready to play right now
The Crew - Ubisoft required internet connection at all times, so when they shut down the servers, it killed the game. Definitely shitty but how was this Sony’s fault exactly?
Concord - Was terminated but Sony fully refunded everyone. If you paid $40 for it but then got your $40 back, did you actually lose anything?
Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4) - CDPR released a completely broken and buggy game that was unplayable, Sony delisted it and fully refunded it. If you got a full refund is this really a case of Sony taking away your games? Also, even though they delisted it, if you bought it, you can still download and play it..though why would you even play the PS4 version, but hey it’s still an option if that’s your fancy
I’ve had my PSN since 2007, never had an issue, all my games are still there

I mean, I have a whole bunch of DRM-free single players games in my library that I can copy and transfer and play whenever I want...
The thing that sucks about retro is that the consoles aren't being manufactured anymore (in most cases), so that means there are a finite number of consoles and a finite number of games in the universe that are compatible with them, and for the most part, that number is only getting smaller.
So I personally find it an interesting dichotomy how in order to preserve physical games, we need digital solutions like emulation, because someday, and that day may be 100 years in the future... The number of functional Sega Genesis systems in the world will be very low.

Mostly all (99.99%), from NES to Switch 2 with PC in between - but what I'd like to ask is: what hardware will you be allowed to use to run your games on in 10 - 20 years from now? Right now I can pop in Rogue Squadron (1998) into my N64 and have a good time, but my 2004 laptop can no longer run my digital copy just because Valve revoked that privilege due to nixing OS support.

The funny thing about modern consoles is that they're getting closer and closer to regular PC hardware, which removes some of the hurdles for emulation. It's not like it's easy by any means, but I think we'll eventually get emulators for the current gen.
The problem really is mostly the live service games, including web games and apps that rely on server code that can't be pirated or preserved. The best anyone can hope for is that there are people who will capture and preserve network requests and responses, so that eventually the backend can be reverse engineered. If none of that gets preserved it's that much more of a herculean task to ever bring those games back.
Another big gap in the record is mobile games which are very sparsely preserved. Things like Apple Arcade is also complicated because they're not just regular apps, they have a DRM check to ensure you have a subscription, and games that get removed from the store are actually just gone gone, you can't even redownload them like with delisted Steam games.
I do play a couple of phone games that I expect to vanish in due time. 100% of what I currently own physically will forever be playable by my expectation.

I still have a working SNES and Gameboy - both first generation. Apart from the usual battery change issue all of my games from back then still work <3
Edit: And I still have an old, portable CRT TV. There's something special about playing Zelda III on the SNES out on the balcony in the summer.

Given I'm on Steam, I'm going to assume they continue operating consistently. So, just guessing, I'm going to go with all of them, except for maybe Marvel Rivals, Apex Legends, Paladins, and Sea of Thieves. They're all games that I believe fundamentally rely on official server connectivity to operate. I haven't played Paladins for 9 years and it's still there, so I'm likely overestimating the possible impact.

Maybe I’m mistaken here but AFAIK we don’t own our games, digital or physical. Any console can release an update that will block a game from launching, digital or physical. We’ve never owned our media. Music, movies or games. They have a right to take back or cut access to any media. It just used to be much harder before the internet. It’s sucks but that’s the way it is.
Not defending cutting physical. There’s absolutely reasons to have it. Just saying that none of our games are safe unless you plan to disconnect from the internet and only play games that don’t need a downloaded file to accompany the disk or an online connection to run.

No, not quite. We always owned a license to a copy of media, rather than the media itself. But you are still entitled to that copy.
Copyright says it all in the name. It's not "deleteright".
Of course, you can have rentals. You can have temporary services which the copy depends on to be functional (servers aren't copied media). But you can't sell someone a perpetual license to a copy and then alter the deal after the agreement was made.
A company can't legally require you to surrender your disc or tape you bought and paid for.
A digital download is just as physical as those things, it just happens to live on a writable medium.

Considering every game in my PS3 library is still playable now, I would imagine everything in my PS4 library and PS5 library will probably still be playable 20 years from now. Maybe more. And by that point I'll be able to soft mod a PS4 or PS5 and get all the games for free anyway.

Most of my games, the only one I'm really worried about is my copy of Wii Sports me and my family have had for over 15 years. It's been having really bad crashing problems for a couple of years now and I think the disk will soon have to be put to rest.

Likely Elite Dangerous. I have no doubt Fdev will support it even if it becomes a money sink for them. I would see it getting a full offline mode before going the way of The Crew.
Dragon's Dogma and Elden Ring. I can't really speak 100% on DD2, but I know DDDA is playable offline. There is so little the game uses online for that I would bet DD2, if it isn't already fully playable without internet, will at least have an Offline mod for it before it goes out thanks to REFramework. As for Elden Ring, this rings true of ALL FromSoftware games. Not just that one. Armored Core VI included. That's just how they roll.

Most of my games. I was a huge no digital guy even before Sony's kerfuffle with killing discs. Before coming where I am now, where there's no game stores anywhere really, I got exclusively physical copies of games if I could (theres a bunch of indie titles i have that are only digital because costs probably). I watched a friend's digital game delete itself after it crashed and make him rebuy the game when I was a kid, and since then I've been paranoid of malfunctions messing with my library
Now I have to be paranoid of a corporation messing with my library. I can't afford a PC...

All of my older game consoles with discs and cartridges still work so I'm gonna be fine I'll be spending the rest of my life trying to complete my backlog

All of them most likely, if the last 20 years are any indication.
I haven't bought a game in physical format in years, and I intend it to stay that way. This whole reddit rage about discs is just weird to me.
Why would I want to play the disc version of a game that most likely needs a 50gb patch to fix some day 1 game breaking bugs.
The industry will not just pivot back to making games complete on the disc itself, it hasnt been like that for years now.

EDIT: also people literally assuming we'll all always have access to online game libraries with all the material preserved lol. likely ppl born when the internet was already well established I guess, and can't picture it ever going locked, closed and unaffordable af

Looks at my digital Steam and PS4 libraries
Pretty much all of them. The only one that I really can't is Chronicles of Riddick Dark Athena because of Targes DRM.
