Discussion / Question What was the first game that made you say this?

Half-Life 2 looked photorealistic to me back when I was 7 years old

Remember when I watched my dad play Morrowind when it came out. I thought it looked like real life.
2
u/jstewart25 5d ago
I was 14 and just a couple years into PC gaming but this was the one where I ACTUALLY thought it looked realistic. I can remember saying it about the first madden game I got on GameCube which was a very large upgrade from ps1 or n64, but I knew it wasn’t quite there yet, I was just excited.

u/SwirlySauce 5d ago
I remember my ATI 9600XT came with a Steam code for Half Life 2.
Digital download, the graphics, the physics... It felt like the future. What a great game

u/SwirlySauce 5d ago
Rogue Squadron on GameCube still looks damn good to this day. I think that was the best looking launch title at the time.
Luigi's Mansion as well

Played that shit over 6 floppy disks
7
u/ZhangtheGreat 5d ago
Haha, I played it on my neighbor's PC. After playing it, other golf games paled in comparison, even to this day. It had all the elements of a great golf game: simple to pick up and play, difficult to master, and lots of mulligans.
3
u/ChefMark85 5d ago
I think this is why I can't get into golf games anymore. It never got any better than this.
3
u/cassette_sunday 5d ago
errmm how dare you ignore Wii Sports? lol

I did love me some bowling
2
u/cassette_sunday 5d ago
Bowling was the one man. So competitive. Baseball and boxing were good too. Wii Sports is one of the GOATs man
9
u/AmyDeferred 5d ago
Golf games had such an advantage on graphics because the player can't move... It could take a whole second per frame

I unironically thought as a teenager that graphics would never get better than that
2
u/AnyImpression6 5d ago
Then they released ff8 which looks a million times better.
4
u/Doctormaul68 5d ago
Hate hate ff8. Ff9 is where it’s at. I’ll take that jumping rope mini game over the card game. We don’t need to base the entire game and or battle system out of the mini game looking at you x.

Donkey Kong Country. Up to that point, I never really gave graphics a thought. I knew they were improving, and the jump from the NES to SNES was huge. But DKC changed everything for me

I remember when DKC came out and was so
in awe of the graphics. This around the first time Best Buy opened around my area and they had it playing in the middle of store in a big screen.
Killer instinct was another one where I was floored by the graphics.

Red Dead Redemption (the first), Black Ops I was a 2000s kid
9
u/JRHThreeFour 5d ago
Red Dead Redemption 1 blew my mind when it first came out in 2010. I played it so much in high school and though I love the second game, the first has a special place and is very nostalgic for me.

u/yeehowdypartner 5d ago
I actually got it way later, like 2014ish maybe 2015, my uncle had it and I loved it but I didn't buy it until then and it held up so so well even then
2
u/toads_art 5d ago
First game i picked up at around 6 was halo 3, i remember how mind blown i was — when red dead redemption came out it was a whole different ball park, miss that game, remember red dead undead (?) i think that was the name? I miss all the cool horses it had in that dlc

Took me ages to figure out how to get the right animation to play and recover health. It's so specific. The wonky controls don't help, either

I was so excited about The Getaway 3, and the screenshots and videos that came out after it got cancelled looked so fucking good.

I remember the turn signals would help player know if they should go left or right since there was no mini map
2
u/iimMrBrightside 1d ago
Quite clever, honestly.
Can't think of any other games (outside of using mods) that actively use turn signals.
Same with running red lights, speeding, or including seatbelts. Would take some of the fun out if they did, tho.

u/CherryGrabber 6d ago
Skyrim. Upon closer inspection, it definitely has it's polygons.
Now Silent Hill 3? I don't know why but it still looks as realistic as I remembered it. Thanks to clever use of film graining, lighting, and detailed character models.
6
u/FISTOproductions 5d ago
Gave my sister my old ps3 and she popped in skyrim. At that point, I had been playing it on the ps4. The difference was way more polygons on ps3 vs ps4, as the ps3 version was tailored for CRT while the ps4 version was tailored for LCD/LED. Not to say it still doesn't have it's polygons, but was more noticeable

u/Prestigious_Money447 5d ago
part of this is what we were used to. The models in FF8 were a HUGE step up over FF7. Most RPGs on PSX still had anime/chibi/toon style proportions.

Yep and the opening sequence FMV and the one immediately going to the first mission where wedge and Biggs were. That scene on the boat still is vivid in my mind https://64.media.tumblr.com/85ac93163f6858ba73160990a6dd477f/92fa47e4afa0060d-46/s540x810/54193148db7cfb9ef4f62bd1ee4ddcfbab138441.gifv

Mirror’s Edge was mind blowing when I saved up to get a 4-5 year old GT 730 to put in my dual-core 2009 HP desktop.
Wrestlemania 21 was probably the first game to do that to me though
22
u/JPSWAG37 6d ago
Tbf Mirrors Edge still looks fantastic to me
3
u/Teamawesome2014 5d ago
Jacob Gellar has a video about why it still looks so good.

GTA IV was the one for me. I'd grown up on Mario 64, OOT, DOOM and Diablo 1, Doom 2 and 3 later, Crazy Taxi, probably at least half the GBA library. GTA IV was the one I was completely enamored with how life like it looked and I've been chasing the high of that physics engine ever since. So much so that I played 30 minutes of GTA V in 2017ish and hated the physics so much I never played it again. Nostalgia can be nuts sometimes because I still occasionally go back to IV and I always get a feeling of "This is what GTA is, how its meant to feel." I'm waiting on VI's PC release, but I'll skip it too if they don't fix that.
Edit: a word

u/LootGek 5d ago
Final fantasy 10 for the ps2 blew me away.

Never finished that game for some reason.

I'm going to say this because I can't remember that far back 😂 FF X definitely was one of them for sure since it's my favorite FF title

u/Morgaiths 5d ago
Not the first I played that were graphically impressive, but for realistic (art, cgi and everything) I'll go with Final Fantasy 8 and Morrowind.

I had this issue. Unreal turned out better looking than the screenshots, but it also came out later. by the time it came out, other games caught up.

Oh man, those magazines were so cool. I actually miss them, reading on websites just don't feel the same.

When i subscribed to Nintendo Power around 1990, they sent out a special edition filled with previews of what kind of games would be possible on the SNES, which hasn't launched in the US yet. Many of them absolutely blew my mind.

Freshman year of college I had a roommate that only had Nintendo systems his entire life. Him and I were playing GTA 4 on my PlayStation one evening and he’s running around. Eventually he runs down a staircase which causes him to shout out, “his feet are hitting each step! This game is amazing!” So, for him, I’d say GTA 4 lol

Super Mario 64 with the 3D camera you can control as the player. Jaw dropping
https://giphy.com/gifs/YTtqB2j5EN7IA
2
u/Opening-Function8616 5d ago
Changing the camera with c buttons is harsh in hindsight. But then again the n64 only had one joystick thingy.
Still loved the hell out of that game, but OOT wowed me a bit more
5
u/GamingGems 5d ago
I remember the first time I saw Mario 64 and noticed that Mario blinks. I thought- this is it, game graphics will never get better than this. We will never reach Toy Story graphics, that would be too expensive. Mario 64 is the end of the line.
Little did I know that game budgets would just get bigger and bigger to the point where Toy Story looks like old school animation now.
4
u/buttzbuttsbutts 5d ago
I mean, I can smell what he's cooking.
4
u/BubbabeeTuna 5d ago
That's not actually the Rock though. That's the trademark friendly "The Stone", whose original textures were based on Jake Gyllenhaal in latino make-up.
2
2
u/Caipirinha-Aguada 5d ago
Wow, I didn't know that. In South America, they called him "The Reggae" and the textures were based on Vampeta without the mustache.

u/Prestigious_Money447 5d ago
Gran Turismo 1, maybe. That was... 1997. There was a late PSX wrestling game, maybe WWE Smakdown 2, which had really good character models compared to other games, even on the N64. That was pretty impressive. But ultimately it was NFL 2K on Dreamcast that was really mind-blowing.

Growing up playing Sonic The Hedgehog on the Genesis and booting up Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast for the first time was actually mind blowing.

The first time I walked into my friends house after he got his Dreamcast they were playing NFL, and I legit thought a game was on.

I'm a gamer since the early 90s and Max Payne 2 / Silent Hill 3 was the first time I remember thinking "this is enough for graphics, now lets focus on the rest". I still think I was 100% correct. Unfurtunatly graphics kept evolving, but "the rest" didn't.

The tanker section. Graphics, animations and the insane attention to detail. I don't think anything blew my mind as when that game first came out.
2
u/00Qant5689 5d ago
Hell, MGS2 as a whole aged super well because this attention to detail would still be considered very graceful today:
3
u/Temporary-Rip-4502 5d ago
Sick compilation. Yeah that game was nuts.
You know after replaying the entire series recently it was made abundantly clear to me that this entry was peak Kojima and MGS. It went from one I really liked to the absolute best entry in the series in retrospect.

I think you also gotta factor 2 things, one there was nothing else to compare it to, so this was peak graphics. Two is that these games weren't being played in 1080p like in modern emulators, they were in 480 or 240p so the imperfections of the models were blurred out.
