Imagine it be a 8 hour campaign with the majority of the the game being online.

u/namastayhom33 28d ago

imagine it having no meaningful campaign and it being a world sandbox just like Crimson Desert

12 thousand hours on Black Desert is insane. Are you okay?

26

u/greythicv 28d ago

Tbf that's not even that many when the majority of players leave the game running 24/7 to fish while afk while they go to work or sleep at night

19

u/PrincipleNecessary65 28d ago

He was gooning 90% of the time

8

u/OGBRedditThrowaway 28d ago

To put this into perspective, humans live for like an average of 750,000 hours total. This person's spent almost 2% of their life playing Black Desert Online.

Crimson dessert is a bad example, it has the worst campaign I've ever seen

46

u/whousesgmail 28d ago

I loved CD but I can’t see Rockstar having Jason and Lucia respond “…yes” to 80% of the things NPCs say lol

24

u/GRoyalPrime 28d ago

Which is kinda funny, cause CD was aping RDR2 (and Witcher 3) so hard, it's impossible to miss.

So many missions start with our human log of a character walking up ro characters in camp, followed by a repetitive horse rising segment to the mission and not a line worth remembering is uttered.

"You see, we need to make money by doing a bix fight!" Rough Viking Guy #3 says. You do that. Mission is over. Nothing Happened.

Like it's even hard to recall anything, it just mush of disjointed events. Like someone started playing RDR2 twelve hours in, played 3 missions, and was like: This is our story mode.

Damn, how I wish CD had a character creator and a "do whatever you want" design like Skyrim, where you can just ignore the main story and just do proper questlines unrelated to the main story.

13

u/TopHatZebra 27d ago

If CD were a story-less sandbox game like Kenshi it would be 9/10 instead of 5/10.

They literally don't even have to add anything, it's the first game I have ever played where the mere *presence* of the story detracts from the experience. Just remove the story and the game actually gets better.

No matter how insanely good the story might possibly be that still exactly what's going to happen Rockstar knows what makes money 🤷‍♂️

56

u/meatballs223 28d ago

I mean the fact Rockstar was able to milk money from a 13 year old game off of their online mode is proof enough they will be able to print money for years with this one aswell. I'm just hoping they respect the GTA formula enough to make an in-depth story

17

u/itsr1co 28d ago

Well that's been a theory for why it took so long for GTA 6, that committing to it means killing an already established cash flow. If GTA 6 online is worse or whatever, they will lose money on both sides. GTA 5 players will stop spending because what's the point, it's going to officially die sooner or later. GTA 6 players will stop spending because it sucks, why waste money on a shit experience?

Everyone hopes GTA 6 will be a homerun, but it's a damn risky move.

7

u/RedApplesauceK 27d ago

That’s not a theory it’s a fact. It’s the same reason why no one is seeing a new Elder Scrolls game. The were making money of their online Elder And 76. Also the remaster. If any of these studios can make an online game that will last them the years they will cash on that. There is no reason for them to spend time and make a creative and good sequel when they can just make more bank on an online thing. And all companies are looking at it like this. I bet even Nightreign if it sold like crazy, elden ring would have been the last creative and interesting thing we see from them.

We are in the beginning of dark ages if gaming, but people cant see it…..

Rockstar is known for being one of the best storytellers in the industry. They're also really good at making a shit-ton of money selling online currency. I think they have enough skill and budget to do both here.

u/Disgruntled_Healer 28d ago

They’ll still make $1 billion.

For reference, GTA V did $800 million day one, and crossed the $1 billion mark within three days.

If it’s even half decent, it’ll be the most profitable single video game in history (a title currently held by GTA V).

89

u/LayWhere 28d ago

Has it earned more than WoW? Google says thats earned $15b (albiet with 12 expansions)

96

u/MeasurementFront9598 28d ago

Gta 5 alone has made like 10 billion over the last decade, if its hasnt already from all the other games, im sure gta 6 will easily break that

11

u/Disgruntled_Healer 27d ago

last report i read was at 8.5 billion and growing, so depending on how long ago that was, they probably have eclipsed the 10 mark

GTA has still had content updates.

League is technically one game release and google says that's earned $18b

→ More replies (3)

23

u/RundownPluto 28d ago

WoW isn’t as highly profitable as GTA V to my understanding. They’ve done relatively little work on GTA since its release compared to the effort and money put into WoW expansions. Or that would be my guess at least

→ More replies (8)

33

u/TypicallyThomas 28d ago

Yeah but unless you're a shareholder, why would you care about the profits? For consumers the only thing that should matter is if the game is good

u/chubsmagooo 28d ago

I don't think anyone is worried about how many billions of dollars they're going to make

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Any_Government_4909 28d ago

And that's exactly why the game will be absolute dog water. They now know they have the fans a the palms of their hands. There's literally zero incentives to make the main story any good.

9

u/finalremix 28d ago

Didn't they already (upon discovering the magic of shark cards) cancel the singleplayer stuff in 5, then cram the planned heist into the online shit, too? Fuck expansions, let's just focus on shark card slop.

2

u/Up_in_the_Sky 28d ago

But… do you think if they know that it’s going to sell well that they’ll put in 100% effort? It’s not an indie team risking the life of their company on whether the product fails or not.

When was the actual last good CoD game? MW2? They know they’re printing money so they don’t try that hard. Would be sad to see that happen to GTA but I wouldn’t be surprised. The gaming industry is going through it. I mean a fucking stick a ram costs a kidney. It will likely be a solid game. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s considered worse than GTA 5 despite the graphical upgrade.

Rockstar doesn't typically reinvent the wheel when it comes to GTA. Not since it went from a top down game.

If you like the GTA franchise, you will likely like this game. If you don't like the GTA franchise, you don't care about this game.

91

u/NICOLEISDEAD 28d ago

Yeah all the cynicism is weird. This isn’t some unknown commodity. Rockstar has a long track record. We know what to expect and for the most part it will be more of the same. If you liked the last gta you’ll almost definitely like this one. They really don’t reinvent the wheel and they don’t have to.

26

u/JingleJangleDjango 28d ago

I think its for several reasons, and they kinda go hand in hand. You have a lot of people experiencing their first Rockstar hype train. GTA5 is 13 years old, RDR2 is almost eight years old, many people excited or interested in GTA 6 could have played these games long after their release and not know of how both those games went, several delays and gameplay videos only a few months before release. Also, this past few years have had a number of flops, rushed products, bumbles, fumbles, and downright scams. The same people who havent experienced a Rockstar release, or at least have forgotten it, also have become accustomed to bullshit from game devs.

I have no idea if it'll be good or not, but the money, time, and track record in place indicates it'll be fine. A decent, engaging story, good characters, and palpable gameplay with a bunch of side stuff to sink your teeth into like usual. My only hope is that its a lottle less zany and humorous than GTA5 and is more like 4 or RDR.

11

u/Anywhere-Due 27d ago

Considering the setting, I’m fully expecting it to lean into the zaniness more

8

u/SubjectBodybuilder81 27d ago

i mean the description says “lucia and jason find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in america” , i’m guessing the world itself and side missions will be zany and goofy but the main story will be on the serious end, which imo i would prefer it that way

3

u/7StarSailor 28d ago

I grew up with GTAIII, Vice City and SA, then later played IV and V.

I think V was a major departure from the formula since its huge focus on GTA online. Getting no DLC for GTAV after Ballad of Gay Tony for IV being almost better than the base game and the RDR DLC being one of the best DLCs in the entire industry was shocking to me.

If you've been gaming for the last 25 years and know how the industry is going, you should be wise enough to not put too much faith in big names anymore. Blizzard, Ubisoft, Bethesda etc. all fell off massively. Also lots of good devs left Rockstar after finishing RDR2. I expect GTA VI be a live service game for zoomers first and foremost.

11

u/lemonylol 28d ago edited 28d ago

People were making this exact criticism about RDR2 after it's release, when it was already heavily praised. But most people are just aware of this and heavily enjoy the game anyway. I've been playing and watching the series and developer grow over the years and have gauged my expectations properly to know that, even if it's considered a B+ Rockstar game, that's still going to put it at one of the best games of all time.

I think the biggest disconnect is between people who have played the GTA games since the 90s or even 2000s, and people whose first GTA game was GTAV, which is like an entire generation and a half right now. Those two groups are going to react and expect very different things from this game. Like I had a guy reply to me in an earlier thread say that they didn't even consider the single player the main game, they thought it was just an introduction to the main, online game. That's how long GTAV has been around, and where the line in the fanbase lays.

Regardless, there is zero way everyone won't have something they want in this game. But I think there's also a third branch of the fanbase that will spoil whatever the game turns out to be by manifesting this cynicism over its development and almost wanting it to fail, because they get more enjoyment from the reaction or the discussion of it than the game itself.

u/squiggydingles 28d ago

I soured on the franchise after playing online for a few days, after taking a break from GTA5 for 5-6 years. It was just clearly a money sink if you wanted to do anything fun and not get bullied by tweens with Oppressors.

Edit: thankfully I didn’t play RDR2 online and that was a great experience. I hope they build GTA6 with the same focus on storytelling like RDR2

u/Bubbleguns2020 28d ago

It will be a good game, too much money, time and experience involved in its production. The problem it will probably face is living up to people's personal expectations.

189

u/South_Buy_3175 28d ago

If you think GTA6 has high player expectations, Elder Scrolls 6 is going to put those to shame.

People have been waiting for a sequel for over 15 years, the industry has advanced massively since Skyrim and Bethesda… has not really kept up with modern standards judging by Starfield.

It’s gonna be a shitshow.

89

u/Bubbleguns2020 28d ago

Yeah I have kind of lost all hope for Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 being worth the wait. Hopefully Starfield has given Bethesda the wakeup call they badly need.

50

u/meatballs223 28d ago

God Starfield was so shit. Modders literally took the game code and completely reengineered it into a starwars game and it honestly is 10x better than what bethseda put out.

I agree and hope that with how big of a flop Starfield was they really relook their strategy and go back to what was working, as I wasn't the biggest fan of Fallout 76 either

12

u/SquareFickle9179 28d ago

64

u/GameDestiny2 28d ago

I don’t think it’s actually possible for the game to be “bad”, people love what it’s being built on (RDR2), it’s a reliable gameplay format, and they’ve got way too much quality control for it to be abysmal.

But the chances for it to fall short are huge. To prove my point, reply with what you would have expected out of GTA 6, the dreamiest most ideal version.

24

u/Dudewhocares3 28d ago

I’d like them to bring back the character switch mechanic, but maybe have it at certain moments trigger character specific cutscenes that maybe flesh them out a bit.

Also, I want a pussy eating cutscene

52

u/No-Obligation2563 28d ago

I think the gameplay is just dated. Tap A repeatedly to run, hold left trigger and your reticle just locks onto the enemies. It just keeps getting bigger and prettier. But it’s the same outdated gameplay underneath.

54

u/Deftallica 28d ago

May be a hot take, but the controls in GTA have almost always sucked.

11

u/Environmental_Cup_93 28d ago

It’s a better experience for the casual gamer, basically permanent easy mode. GTA and RDR are both more about the immersion and story.

15

u/Jerk850 28d ago

Exactly this. These games are not meant to be played like a first person shooter. It's not designed for e-sports!

11

u/No-Obligation2563 27d ago

No one is saying it should be anything close to e-sports. But for the biggest games of all time I expect a bit more than aiming just snapping onto enemies and tracking them with zero effort from the player.

It’s not like the only options are immersion or e-sports.

3

u/Combat_Orca 27d ago

It’s also not particularly immersive to have that

Transitioning between San Andreas to V and RDR to RRR2 both newer games felt way clunkier than predecessors that I dropped both after a few hours.

The controls felt so sluggish

12

u/No-Obligation2563 28d ago

Yeah I agree. It feels very clunky and awkward. Felt the same way in RDR2.

4

u/Albatross1225 28d ago

Always loved the gameplay of gta and red dead redemption and they get better with every release

5

u/GameDestiny2 28d ago

I am kind of with you there. Don’t think there’s much you can do about the aiming, but the A button is starting to feel aged. At the same time, it’s kind of like a Bethesda RPG where that’s kind of just what you expect from Rockstar. Definitely needs some sort of update though.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/funkmydunkyouslunk 28d ago

They need to expand the story more than just drive to point A, shoot, chase, drive to point B, here’s your money.

Here’s some side mission/activities and impossible collectibles/easter eggs in the meantime.

My biggest gripe with GTA is that they never truly let you have freedom with the story. You can do “whatever you want”, until you start a story mission and can fail a mission by taking a few steps in the wrong direction. Needs to add in some more RPG elements of choice and consequences.

7

u/L3Sc 27d ago

Tbh me too. GTA is too big of a game to be non RPG. Something like Cyberpunk would be really good even if you're not affecting the main story completely except for ending choices. There might also be consequences of your actions in the open world maybe like a Dishonored way which seems too big of a deal but this is Rockstar they can do it by throwing a ton of money.

3

u/CertainlyRobotic 28d ago

Exactly. There's nothing about it to be bad, but also I don't really understand what people hope to get from GTA 6 versus GTA 5.

2

u/elwebbr23 27d ago

I'd like for the game to have deeper interactions than RDR2, where you can turn a stranger NPC into a friend. I know it won't happen but that would be badass

Five months out and still no official gameplay reveal. RDR II and GTA V both had gameplay breakdowns released months in advance to those titles' release. Maybe I'm overthinking it...

185

u/Rich_Swish 28d ago

RDR2's gameplay trailer only launched like 2 months before release date, I don't get all this talk of no gameplay trailer

119

u/Proxelies 28d ago

A lot of this discourse feels like younger folks waiting for their first Rockstar release. Shocked at delays, immediately suspicious at the lack of gameplay footage, etc. I've been playing their games for decades, this is their standard operating procedure. We will get a short gameplay trailer in late August/early September.

44

u/Urabraska- 28d ago

Because for a lot of people it is their first Rockstar game. Especially since GTAV. It will be 13 years and 2 months between GTAV and GTA6 releases. You could have your first kid the day 5 released and it's now in junior high before 6 came out.

15

u/rufusbot 28d ago

I had my kid around the time 5 came out and she's going to be in high school the year after next

7

u/Imaginary_Victory253 28d ago

as a day one project zomboid enjoyer... I did in fact live the "got a degree, then a wife, then a house before 1.0" meme

3

u/JingleJangleDjango 28d ago

Yeah people overreact. I mean im not surprised, most of the people excited for this game probably weren't even allowed to play GTA5 on release. RDR2 was announced in 2016 and supposed to come out fall 2017 and got pushed to the next year. Idk the quality of GTA6 considering how many OGs arent there, but nothing so far spells doom, just theur usual blunders before releasing good games.

5

u/swat1611 28d ago

Tbf 13 years is enough for the fanbase to change drastically. Hell, I doubt most people who worked on GTA 6 were even credited on GTA 5.

u/Gaming_Gent 28d ago

Very on brand for them to not have any raw gameplay out, just a few snippets. Some breakdowns a couple of months before launch that don’t have more than a few seconds of uncut gameplay. Not really abnormal for them as a company, but if you’ve never paid attention to their releases it seems weird.

Nothing happens. Gaming outlets and Youtubers will milk it for a week or two and people who pre ordered it will complain they wasted money they chose to use to purchase a game they hadn't seen gameplay or watch a review beforehand. For what it's worth, it'll probably be an excellent game.

10

u/ManthisSucksbigTime 28d ago

Tbh it's still going to have a pretty smooth journey to achieving a billion dollars in sales

Sure you could have 200k social media users making a post about how GTA 6 is bad but it wouldn't really do much to affect the people who want to turn their brains off and enjoy the game

3

u/bravo009 28d ago

Absolutely! It could objectively be a worse GTA than Vice City, for example, but there are people in the world who hear/see "New GTA" and will automatically buy it. Rockstar has successfully built up GTA to a point where even a "not so good" GTA would sell like hotcakes.

The only way GTA VI flops in my opinion is if the moment you install it on your console, it kills the save files of your other games and then kills your console. If it doesn't do that, congrats Rockstar!

u/Moblam 28d ago

I feel like i'm kinda alone with this opinion, but as someone who actually played GTA5 on release and later on with friends when the heists released, it wasn't that outstanding. It was decent, but what made it fun was playing it with friends, not the actual game. What isn't fun with friends?

The majority of reddit acts as if it is the second coming of Christ, but all i can see in the future is another open world game, that will be bigger than the last one but not necessarily better, if you get what i mean. Not to mention asking 80 bucks for your game that is guaranteed to have microtransactions again is rich.

I personally didn’t super like GTA5 actually. I went from red dead redemption 2 to GTA and felt vastly underwhelmed. RDR2 was amazing, and going to GTA5, which Rockstar treats as a golden child, was just not nearly as engaging.

7

u/RequiemForSM 27d ago

In fairness GTA was developed for the 360/PS3 era, capturing the scope of RDR2 would’ve been impossible on that tech.

4

u/Wanderer-2609 27d ago

RDR2 came out long after GTA5 so it isnt a fair comparison.

That’s all I see too. Just another open world game.

3

u/TypicallyThomas 28d ago

I'm with you. In a separate comment I laid out why I'm worried about it creatively (TL;DR: The creatives at the core of the previous games have all left Rockstar briefly after GTA V) and GTA V was okay. I can understand the hype but if you pay attention there's cause for concern

3

u/Pope_Aesthetic 27d ago

Hmmm I’m conflicted. The map and what we’ve seen so far is pretty dam impressive.

But you are right. I remember being so excited for GTA5 on release. Rushing home from 10th grade math class. Waiting for the downloads to finish. Booting up the game, going through the intro… then being like… huh. This is it?

I remember the world didn’t look particularly impressive. Certainly not leagues better than GTAIV. The guns felt weak and had no punch. The cars were pretty forgettable. Yea nothing felt that impressive.

After playing for many hours, I definitely enjoyed the game. But it for sure felt limited.

u/Silverr_Duck 28d ago

Gameplay was never what made GTA special. It's the storytelling and the power fantasy of being a criminal in a modern setting. For me the story and writing better be a fucking masterpiece to justify this level of corporate greed. I have a sneaking suspicion gta6 is not gonna meet expectations. So many companies have fallen down the trap of taking customers for granted and churning out slop assuming fans will lap it up regardless. I have little faith R* isn't slowly turning into EA.

It’s RDR2’s fault

It raised the standards of Rockstar Games so much, they only expect masterpieces from now on

Yeah I lowkey hope it flops, but I know it won’t. I’m kinda over GTA as a franchise. The PS2 era is still gold, but besides that? I’m not really interested.

It’s just gonna be another kinda meh plotline entirely based on movies that already exist and likely a map that’s about 60-70% grass and void of anything interesting, and missions that fail you for thinking outside the box because they *need* you to do things a very specific way.

I’m good.

3

u/alteransg1 27d ago

In Vice City there is a late game mission where you have to drive around a dude (I think it was one of those Love Fist guys) in a fast car and the timer is extremely short. But, you totally can get out of the car, get i one of the rooftop helicopters and fly to the location. You need to be in a vehicle (can't walk him to the red circle). Luckily the construction building mission has made you a master pilot. See there is out of the box thinking. Well, like 70% of other missions insta-fail if you exit the car, but there is free will in that one mission.

Listen I am not a fan. I will not be buying GTA6, I haven't played one since 3. I do not think they are going to do anything groundbreaking. It will be a very high fidelity game about street level crime. It will likely run well, and have good music and quality voice acting. It isn't going to have any crazy systems or take any risks.

I see no world where this game sucks. It at worst will just be a meh game. Too many people just wantg a simple escape and this will give them that. It not going to be a Mindseye or Concord or Gollum.

Red Dead 2’s online mode.

All they had to do was not abandon it, but they did.

I feel like something would have to go terribly wrong for them to abandon the GTA VI online mode

It will succeed,

the game was delayed multiple times and apparently it’s the most expensive game they’ve worked on with over 6,000 developers across all of Rockstar Games worldwide.

3

u/unknownsourced 28d ago

If the third person shooting gameplay handles anything like 5 or red dead 2 I will completely give up on playing rockstar games. I don’t think they realize they can make their game feel realistic without compromising decent control schemes and mechanics.

Rockstar has never made a bad game I trust them

6

u/LuciferBael 28d ago

Have they really never made a bad game? Not being an asshole, genuine question.

i wouldn't say manhunt was bad .. just extremely dark and brutal .. even by rockstar standards

I've seen how they've been handling GTA online, having quality of life features and locking it behind a subscription as well as removing cars in order to create fomo and putting those cars back up for sale in rotation weekly locked behind said subscription makes me question their credibility.

Wait for reviews?

2

u/Stolen_Sky 28d ago

Like V did?

2

u/Irishman4000 28d ago

From getting GTA1 on the PS1 at 8 y/o to having all the PS2 trilogy come out during my teens, the hype train around for San Andreas after VC was pretty intense and it was totally worth the hype!! GTA4 then took it to the the HD universe and the hype was on another level and again it was a great game (but somehow didn't hit the same for me)... GTAV totally let me down. I found it so boring and even gave up on the campaign at parts and had to force myself to finish it. I'm looking forward to VI but I'm very much waiting to play it before I get over hyped.

2

u/Davetek463 28d ago

I’m very confident it won’t. Rockstar has a great track record in that regard.

2

u/Cowboy_Dandy_III 28d ago edited 28d ago

All this fiasco about the lack of a physical disc and locking in-game stores behind a premium edition has brought back other concerns I had.

I’m sceptical about the story. All the veteran GTA writers like Dan Houser, Lazlow Jones and Michael Humphries aren’t involved; they all left Rockstar in 2020.

With how fast culture tends to move in recent years, and Lazlow being off the scene, I’m concerned that the jokes/radio talk shows won’t hit the same or will feel dated.

2

u/SquidVices 28d ago

Imagine it just fucking sucks….

That would suck…

Ondeez

2

u/Crimsonmaddog44 28d ago

Lowkey, the amount of uproar if the game sucked would be insanely funny to watch

2

u/lemonylol 28d ago

Then I just go on and continue living my life

2

u/Fit-Entrepreneur6538 28d ago

Honestly if the game is trash it wouldn’t surprise me if some people legit started an almost Purge like riot given how crazed people were waiting on this

2

u/deerslayer 28d ago

Don’t preporder guys. Wait for actual reviews it’s the only way to stope the vicious cycle of shitification in gaming

2

u/KuroKageB 28d ago

I was so excited before today. Now I hope it's the worst game in the series by far, so I can laugh while no one can sell it back.

(It won't be, but it would be the ultimate catharsis watching all the "buy it at any price... I don't understand why people like physical games... gimme that day 1 dlc" sheeple squirm)

Now accepting downvotes here v

2

u/christopher1393 28d ago

I kind of am hoping it is. Highly doubtful but GTA is very much a trendsetter with games. A lot of the shit they are pulling with this sets a dangerous precedent.

$80 dollar base price, locking basic things (guns, vechicles and in games stores) behind what is essentially day 1 DLC for an extra $20, physical edition having no disc but a download code instead, etc.

Other companies will be far more likely to do this shit if GTA succeeds.

2

u/geaux124 27d ago

I don't think it's going to suck. I do think it is very likely that it fails to meet the impossibly high expectations though.

2

u/Rondawg97 27d ago

If you look at all of the content they are posting on their website, it is much more likely to succeed than fail. The game is going to be truly massive with probably a 50-60 hour main story and equal amount of that with side missions, not to mention all of the secrets to find.

2

u/Gin4Gingers 27d ago

Then rockstar wouldn't be able to pay back the debt from all.the funding it got for the game and the whole studio would get shut down after being one of the longest running powerhouses in the video game world. That's why it keeps getting delayed. They cannot afford to let gta6 be bad

2

u/ThatMrDuck1400 27d ago

Let’s be honest, even if it sucks.. I think people would still like playing it because it is a new GTA

2

u/iamthedayman21 26d ago

It’ll be good, GTA is always a safe bet. They each feel similar to the last one. So if you like GTA, you’ll like it. And if you don’t, you probably weren’t gonna buy it anyway.

If anything, I think the bigger risk is the current consoles barely being able to hit 30 FPS at full resolution.

2

u/Junior_Bike7932 26d ago

It’s your problem, you don’t own it anyway

2

u/SpicyNoodlez1 26d ago

"What if" is crazy.

2

u/StickyNotesEater 26d ago

And yet there are lots of people pre ordering a digital game without gameplay, people are really dumb.

We all know that it will be a great game, but why would you pre order something that won't run out of stock?

2

u/Mother_Anarky 26d ago

I can’t put into words how much I hope it sucks. I hope it ruins them, and the entire gaming industry needs to be restructed so we get shorter games that look worse while taking longer to make, made by people who are paid more to work less and no I’m not kidding

2

u/brigadier_tc 25d ago
