News Be careful of a potential scam (Boss Home Theater)

Upvotes

It was at the CampusOne vehicle delivery area right next to the entrance, two men in a Ford Escape honked and yelled at me to get my attention. They were wearing work uniforms/overalls and actually looked like legit installers. They were gonna install some stuff at exam centre allegedly. At first they were telling me how they had a leftover projector they wanted to get rid of. They were saying they apparently had a leftover projector worth around $15,000 and wanted me to help them sell it so we could split the profit, because otherwise their boss would sell it and keep the money. They also claimed they had another projector that and student offered a 8000 CAD deposit last time and they all made a lot of money.

Don’t bash me for this but I was initially intrigued, they weren’t asking for a deposit so I was genuinely curious. They showed me the warranty and paperwork, as well as the projector itself, that they unboxed saying it’s brand new and that they were willing to plug it in etc. But when they started to ask for a collateral and started pushing very hard, giving me pressure and even when I said there was no way to verify this, they wanted to show me how much it’s worth I said that I understand that but still, and one of the dudes got irritated and told me that I was making excuses. Regardless I said I couldn’t help and left. I checked on Reddit, and on [r/Markham](r/Markham) there seemed to be a similar thing that happened with the same name “boss home theater”and they were from Newmarket apparently. Just wanted to give a heads up in case anyone encounters this or something similar. Also feel free to discuss if anyone encountered something similar.

Question Tote bag or backpack better for classesssssssssss

I honestly don’t mind getting both, I was kinda thinking of doing that. I was just wondering everyone’s thoughts. I think having two back to back classes would call for a backpack to fit for stuff and be easier to carry bc the weight, but if I was just heading somewhere study or only needed my MacBook, a tote would be better.

I also live in a small town and I don’t really know how high mugging rates are in Toronto 😂

Programs Tricky situation for program requirement, can the dean make a decision

Upvotes

I asked my department for a substitution or equivalency for one course in lieu for a required course for my program under compassionate grounds (complicated situation) and i wanted to graduate this Fall. They said they never do a waiver--but they didn't address the substitution request. If i take the case to the dean's office (i know i can't directly email the dean), would they consider my case and potentially provide any solution? Can i email someone? should i go in person to speak to someone? i also tried a petition with the registrar and it was just cancelled cuz its "non-petitionable" this was a long process and i contacted the ombusperson office as well but they told me to wait till my petition gets answered and for when the department gets back to me (the department just got back to me today). this process of figuring this out has taken all summer so i am panicking right now as its urgent :( no might mean no from my department, but again im concerned my specific request was not considered. and if they meant no to the substitution anyway, it honestly feels a bit unfair and super procedural. i'm not sure if anything can happen even if the ombudsperson may turn out to agree that its not fair

any advice is really appreciated. this is high-stakes because I already have post-grad offers which i will lose if i am unable to graduate this Fall

Courses Advice for my schedule (first year life science student)

Hey guys,

I just finished my course selection, and it looks like these are the classes I might take. There were some electives that would have been my first choice, but unfortunately, they were full. I am considering joining a waitlist, but it might not be worth it.

I'll appreciate any advice on study techniques for the classes I'm taking, experiences you've had with the classes I'm taking and any other vital information to get a GPA between 3.8-3.9.

Thanks!

Question Tcard question (wordcountwordcountwordcountwordcount)

quick question

I submitted my photo with the Tcard and tbh, I am not the biggest fan of it.

I was wondering if the photo will only be used for the card or if it will be blared everywhere I go? Like for example, when I scan for the library, will that photo show up in a screen?

I know this is so nitpicky but please entertain my anxiety 😢😢

Question What are the best ways to study for ANT100, PSY100, SOC100?

Hi I’m an incoming first year student and I’ve heard that studying in uni should be different than how you study in high school.

How did you, if you took any of these courses, study? And from which study methods did you see the best outcomes?

I am aiming for a high GPA so I need to work on my study methods over the summer.

Thank you!

Question Info on university college as I’m trying to plan my dorm

Upvotes

I got into university college and selected Whitney hall single room as my top choice (then single room from the other two before going to double) and I have heard mixed answers if the dorm has a mini fridge.

Does it? How big is it? Can I bring my own? Do I have to get rid of the one provided if I do bring my own?

Also, do I have to bring my own curtains?

How is the view from Whitney hall outside?

These seem like dumb questions but I genuinely cannot get an answer online

Question Can I go and pick up my Tcard during the summerrr

I already have it set up online and I’m planning on going to Toronto in the summer before school starts. Can I go during anytime the office is open to pick it up? Do I have to let them know in advance? I’ve heard it takes a long time during move in to pick it up bc there’s so many people there. Thanks!

Finances OSAP Disability Verification and Adjust Living Allowance Past Deadline

Has anyone tried applying for disability verification or request review: adjust living allowing past the deadline?

I applied for 2026-2027 adjust living allowance was denied. Only to realized that it would have been a better if applied for 2025-2026. I got serious injury in my arm in May 1st although I was able till get Surgery for quick recovery, I still am unable to work for the whole summer. This option should have come to my mind quicker.

Is still worth calling my financial aid office? about this?

Hello all. I was wondering if it were possible for someone enrolled in the life sciences program to become a biomedical engineer, and if so, what courses would need to be taken.

Jobs/Work Study Put together a quick site to check resume text against job postings

I'm a junior and I spent part of the summer building a small web app after watching myself and half my friends endlessly tweak the same resume for internship apps. What I learned digging into it is that most companies run applications through screening software first (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever). It looks for overlaps between your wording and the posting's wording, so if you did the work of a product analyst but wrote "analyzed reports" while the posting says "data-driven decision making", the match can just not happen. You won't catch it yourself because you know the context behind every bullet, so nothing looks missing to you.

The site compares your resume against a specific posting and shows where the wording doesn't line up: resume.zoevera.com

First thing I did was run my own resume through it and it did not go well. Bullets I was proud of matched almost nothing in the postings I'd been applying to. If you're looking, run yours against a couple of real job postings before you send anything. Worst case it just confirms your resume was fine.

Jobs/Work Study Didn't get enough TA hours, anxious about what to do next :(

Hey everyone! Im an incoming graduate student who applied for a bunch of TA positions for the upcoming semester. My program is unfortunately unfunded but I thought as a masters student I would hopefully get more TA hours, and I even mentioned in my application about how many hours I would like. While I wasn't expecting the exact amount I requested, I got way less hours than expected. I only got 62 hours, and only got an offer for the Fall semester, not even for the Winter. While I do get a research stipend, I was really relying on my TA hours to help with living costs, and now I'm worried that I won't get anything during the emergency round either. Anyone have any advice? Do you think if I beg my admin they'll give me more hours lol 💀

Residence Is it possible to change residences now as an incoming first year?

I got assigned to chestnut, and already paid my two deposits. Will it be possible to switch to another, cheaper residence at this point, or am I stuck in Chestnut?

Thank you for your help.

Question Am I allowed to waitlist for a fall session of a course if I’m already enrolled in a winter session?

There’s a course I want to take in fall that’s all full, it’s a lot less ideal to take it in winter but there’s space in winter. I kind of like the security of being enrolled in the winter term while there’s still space but I haven’t fully given up trying to get it in fall which is why I’m asking if it’s one or the other

also… how cooked is being 60th on like a 200 person waitlist for a first year math course

Courses Hi UofT, I made course prerequisite graphs website for many schools, and I'm now bringing it to UofT

I hope everyone is doing well.

I was a successful applicant to UofT masters but had to decline my offer due to my disability.
Still, I have this gift for y'all since I believe every school should have it. I hope this helps with the enrollment season.

CourseDelta for University of Toronto: https://coursedelta.deepfriedpancake.com/school/utoronto/

Tree for Chemistry and Biology
The way UofT structures prerequisite equations is quite interesting, but they are all well formed
Video gayme skill tree mode where you learn a spell and the next ones available lights up
Of course, my parser is not perfect but we can suggest edits in a drag and drop interface to make it better

Note:

  1. This is not a startupslop, there are no ads, I make 0 money, I genuinely just wanted to share this with everyone.
  2. I am aware that Courseography exists, though it is narrower in scope and had a different way of reading than my system.

I started out in my 1st year undergrad at york, developing this solo with essentially 0 help from administration, now I'm nearing the end of my masters.

I am continuously improving this and expanding to different schools, and I am open to all critique and suggestions, so feel free to hit me up, I love to chat about this project.

Programs i think i screwed up with my program and now cant get into courses

I’m not really sure how to fix this, but I tried to switch my double major from psych-bio to psych-anthro and I was refused entry into the anthro (sci) major. I have ant101 and ant102, do not have isp100 yet but was going to try getting in this semester, but now cannot. I have a friend who also only had the 2 classes done and she was able to get into the anthro major.

Now, I cannot add or switch classes to my course load because I don’t have 2 majors selected. I will not be accepted back into bio because of a lack of prerequisites but i’m not sure what I can do.

I wanted to try getting into psych specialist next year once I have the credits I need for it but at the moment I cannot. What can I do?

I am currently going into 3rd year
