CPU upgrade tips

Currently running unraid 7.3.0

Originally Started as a Plex server for myself and (as everyone here already knows) quickly spiraled out of control

I’ve slowly outgrown the little i3-12100 in my current setup and I wanted to swap out the cpu to something a little beefier.

Is there anything I should do before swapping to a newer cpu or should it all just be pretty much plug and play?

2 NVIDIA GPUs in one Unraid server - How to manage usage in Docker?

Hi,

I am thinking about adding another GPU to my server so I would have:

5070 Ti 16GB VRAM (currently used)

RTX A400 4GB VRAM (new one)

What I am afraid is that how is handled usage of these GPUs between Docker containers?

I have Steam Headless, llama.cpp and other containers, where I have in Extra Parameters only --gpus all .

Would I need to specify somehow exactly which GPU in these Extra Parameters? If yes how?

Thank you!

Need Help with GPU Statistics

Good morning, everybody! I am having a little trouble with the GPU Statistics Plug-In for Unraid, and I thought I'd reach out to see if anyone can help me straighten things out.

On my Unraid server, I'm running an i7-13700k with an iGPU. The GPU Statistics plug-in detects and displays information about the iGPU without issue.

I also have an Nvidia RTW 5060Ti in this system that is NOT passed through to any virtual machines. The 5060Ti is accessible to the Docker containers running on Unraid (Immich, Jellyfin, Ollama, etc).

Unfortunately, the GPU Statistics plug-in is unable to display any information about the 5060Ti card. The GPU Stats plug-in simply displays "Vendor command returned unparseable data."

I have the Nvidia Driver plug-in installed, and the GPU is detected in the plug-in. Additionally, the plug-in shows the loaded driver is "Open Source Driver: v595.84". If I use the "Production Branch: v595.84" or the "latest: v610.43.03" branch, nothing can use the 5060Ti (as if it goes offline).

Has anyone else dealt with a similar issue or know of a fix for this type of issue?

Are the Nvidia 5000 series cards still not fully compatible with Unraid (read that somewhere)?

Let me know if you have any ideas on how to rectify this issue.

Windows VM Unraid VS Mac Mini?

I am retiring and moving to Panama. I am repurposing my current PC mostly to a new Unraid server. i5 10400 and 32GB of RAM. I already have 2 licenses, and my other server will be hosted by a friend in the states. And will allow me to finally have full redundancy with an offsite storage, local storage and another copy on an external drive.

The move will change my lifestyle for a year maybe more to be quite nomadic. So, moving around frequently requires a smaller footprint and not a rackmount case like I currently have for the 2nd server.

I am definitely building a new server for the 2nd Unraid license to have locally to store photos and run Plex + Arr stack.

My question for those of you that have used a Windows VM as your daily driver. Does it work well and do you suggest it? I will be connected directly to the Unraid box, not a thin client. Read through previous posts and the results are mixed. And for anyone using Mac OS, do you find it a Windows VM usable enough to not bother with considering it on the small Unraid server?

I realize the performance of the M4 is better, but I am limited to 16GB of RAM. I do NOT game. I really don't use Windows that much, just for file management and at times when the Mac isn't the best tool. And I have 32GB of RAM on the Unraid server, but not as powerful a CPU. Which I assume is not a big deal since I am not really putting a load on the Windows VM on either platform.

If you were in my shoes, which way would you go? Use the Mac and a Windows VM or the Unraid VM? Cost wise using Unraid is more expensive since I have to add a USB controller and a dedicated GPU.

Thanks for any input.

[CAN] Need a UPS

I've been putting this off for way too long but the power has gone out for 10 minutes a half dozen times this month and my unraid server is constantly dying, panicking and running parity checks.

I've run a smart plug for a little while now to see how much power I'm using. Ran it with just the server and then with a power bar for my server as well as router, modem, switch. Here's what I got:

  • Peak 130w - power comes back on, everything boots up at once including all HDDs spinning.

  • Idle (server + network gear) 110w

  • Server only idle around 80-100w

  • Server only idle with disk spin down set to 45min 60-75w

I don't know what specs I need. If I could keep the server running for 15mins, shut it down and then have the network gear (10-15w) run for another 30 min or so that would cover most of our outages.

The specs are a little confusing... If VA = Volts x Amps and Watts = Volts x Amps then it should stand to reason that VA = Watts and 250 VA is tons of headroom for what I'm using. But the common ones have 500, 1000, 1500 VA so I feel like I must be missing something.

For capacity let's just say I'm I'm using 100 W for simplicity, a 100 Wh battery should power me for an hour (minus some loss to conversions and inefficiencies). Most batteries are 12 V, so a battery with a 12 V x 9 Ah battery should give me 108 Wh?

This is a the only unit available locally, LX1500GU3-FC. It's 1500 VA, the graph at the bottom says I should get 80 mins at 100 W. It has downloads for Linux software shutdown so I assume it can talk to NUT/Unraid?

I just want to make sure my calculations/assumptions are correct before pulling the trigger. Would be open to any other buying recs, I just looked at this one because I could pick it up today. I'd like a rackmount option but it seems like they're way more expensive for no reason other than "because".

My server shutting down when doing specific tasks after downgrade. How to get the culprit ?

Heyah !

Well first of all, I thought the issue was quite different until a few minutes ago. These past weeks, i've downgraded my server (removed the gpu, lowered the cpu / changed the motherboard + less RAM to have a similar server that the one I did built back in 2021) in order to focus on my new Framework and move away to my setup.

Here's the main specs of it :

  • B560M DS3H V2 (fixed the pins)
  • i7-10700 CPU
  • 8GB of RAM (from a 16GB kit) DDR4
  • A PSU Gold but I can't remember the exact W

My issue was simple : I had a VM that I was using everyday with critical data to move. After the downgrade, when I tried to launch it the server just was turning off. Without warning. The VM doesn't die. The whole server does.

I've tried everything :

  • Redoing the config : Same issue
  • Using 32Gb of RAM : Same issue
  • Putting the powerful build : No issue.

So I've ruled out a VM issue. I've also ruled out a RAM issue.

But today, I was watching some Jellyfin, and all of the sudden, same issue. The server crashed. So no doubt i've a serious hardware issue, but I can't find what's the issue.

If I don't do anything special, the server will work without any issue.

I don't really have the parts anymore, so it's quite hard to dig the issue. Same, it's quite hard for me to try blind things since I don't want my server to be corrupted by turning off like that.

What could be the best way for me to figure out where the issue is ?

Thanks !

Edit : The diagnostic can be found here on an old thread https://forums.unraid.net/topic/199658-whole-server-turning-off-suddently-after-booting-my-most-important-vm-downgraded-the-setup/

Update : Problem solved, overheating.

Thank you all !

The first Unraid build’s sanity check. Need help

Hi everyone,
I’m building my first Unraid server and would love a sanity check. I already purchased everything that I listed here, but still within 14 days of return window.
The build:
Fractal Design Define R5
Intel Core i5-14400
Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4
32 GB Samsung DDR4-2933 (M378A4G43AB2-CVF)
14 TB WD CMR HDD (shucked from WD Elements)
ASUS XG-C100F 10 GbE SFP+ NIC
be quiet! Pure Power 13 M 650 W
APC BX950MI-GR UPS
Main use:
Family storage
Time Machine backups
Streaming to Apple TV 4K with Infuse
Docker containers in the future
1. Cache drive
I already own a 4 TB Gen4 NVMe that currently lives in a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure. I bought it last year for about €200. Today I’d have to spend around €75 on a 500 GB NVMe just for Unraid.
Would you install the 4 TB drive inside the server and use it for cache, appdata/system and frequently accessed files, or keep it external and buy a smaller SSD? My home network is 2.5 GbE.
2. Motherboard
I’m having second thoughts about the Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4.
It only has 4 SATA ports, and once I install the 10 GbE NIC, the only PCIe x16 slot is occupied, making future SATA/HBA expansion difficult.
Would you:
keep it until I actually need more than 4 drives, or
replace it now with something more expandable?
If you’d replace it, which DDR4 LGA1700 ATX motherboard would you recommend?

stuck at Formatting device(s)

Hello, im fairly "new" to Unraid, only ever used it a few years ago before I switched again to windows for my media server.

So my current problem is that when I try to format my cache drive (240gb SanDisk SSD) its just stuck on Formatting devices. I tried to reboot it, and waited an hour while its formatting.

Can I format it using the Terminal, or what would u guys do? Also I can't stop the array while formatting, is that normal?

Is this right for me?

I have a unraid nas at home and I'm on the road truck driver. I'm currently using my bulky gaming laptop (also a gamer) in order to do server stuff and sometimes I don't wanna take the giant thing out. On my phone the screen is so small it doesn't fully display the containers properly so I can't press okay or move or scroll down without constantly rotating my phone. Would this fully display the entire container properly (albeit a bit tiny) and allow me to use tailscale ? Thanks for the recommendation Edit cause didn't make sense cross post: gpd micro pc, found one local $300

Files missing - help!?

I recently stood up an unRAID instance and I'm very much still navigating the learning curve on deployment and configuring everything properly.

I created a 'movies' folder within the 'media' folder that was preconfigured as a user share when I created the array.

I was able to connect to the folder via my laptop and copied over five .mp4 files but found the transfer to be slower than desired, so I put ten additional .mp4 files on a portable SSD drive and connected it to the unRAID server.

It took a bit of fumbling and downloading a plugin but I was able to move the additional .mp4 files from the portable drive to the same 'media' subfolder as the original five files. Just prior to this I realized the 'media' folder in the user share was set to store in cache pool and not the array so I changed that setting for the folder.

The original five .mp4 files remain in cache but the ten additional .mp4 files were moved to the array. Unfortunately they were not *copied* from the portable drive, but actually *moved* to the user share.

I made sure Infuse could see all the .mp4 files and began steaming them on my Apple TV. The new files appeared and played without issue and I went to bed.

When I woke up, I browsed through the user share via the WebGUI and noticed the original five .mp4 files were still appearing but the additional ten that I transferred from the portable drive were gone. When I refreshed Infuse on my Apple TV, it no longer saw the files. I've attempted searching for them via the WebGUI and they don't appear. It's as if the batch of files I transferred have just...disappeared?

I'm sure there's something I'm missing and like I said, I'm still learning the ins and outs of the operating system. I've read several guides but have not been able to understand what happened to the files.

Happy to provide any additional details I've left out if needed. Can anyone help me figure out what on earth happened to these files? Very bummed to have potentially lost them but at the very least I want to make sure this doesn't happen again. The whole point of deploying this NAS was to have a secure repository for my files so I don't lose them so I'm quite disheartened by this hiccup. I hate asking potentially stupid questions but I'll never learn if I don't reach out for some help.

First Unraid build for family storage and Time Machine. Would you change anything?

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m planning my first Unraid build and would appreciate some feedback on the parts list.

I have 2x14TB HDDs.

My main use cases are:

Central storage for family videos, streamed to an Apple TV 4K through Infuse. No hardware transcoding is needed.
Time Machine backups for our Macs.

Does this look sensible for the workload, or am I overspending anywhere? Would you change any of the components?

Help Unraid stuck in emhttp: Starting embttpd…

Post image
7 Upvotes

Good afternoon friends, I have noticed something in my Unraid, it gets stuck initiating a process called emhttp, and it does not happen there, I have already restarted the machine (it is a vm in proxmox) I have updated it to the latest version of Unraid and nothing manages to solve it.

Apart from this detail everything else works without problems, I can access Unraid via web.

Is there something I should be worried about? Thank you friends for the help and any advice you can give me.

Proxmox 8.4.19 (updated)
Unraid 7.3.2 (updated)

New HBA card can’t see all drives.

I just changed a H310 9211-8i it worked fine in the pci e x16 slot. I’ve now added a further 2 drives and upgraded to a LSI 9305-16i in the same slot.

I have connected all 10 drives. 1 of the new ones showed up but had loads of errors during formatting and promptly disappeared.

What could the problem be?

Both invisible drives are connected to different SFF-8643 cables.

Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?

Docker Containers: IPv6 Issues?

Hey folks,

I recently upgraded to 7.3.2 and didn't have any issues. However, after a battery backup hiccup and my server going down, after it rebooted, I started having issues connecting to a couple of docker containers over http. When I log into them and do a "curl ipconfig.me" it returns a IPv6 address when they used to return an IPv4 address, either the VPN connection or local. The containers that do work return an IPv4 address. I tried disabling IPv6 in the UnRAID settings, but then it just stopped returning anything when I tried to the curl command.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks!

HBA or ASM1064 ?

Im trying to build a low powered budget plex server with 9 HDDs (have a NAS case with 9 bays) - this will be my 2nd unraid server - no VMs just plex, music, photos a few dockers.

I've managed to pick up an old PC on eBay £100 which I will strip out of the case - it consists of:

  1. ASRock H310M-G/M.2 M-ATX board with
  2. 1 x PCIE 3.0 x 16 slot and 2 x PCIE 2.0 x 1 slots, 4 x SATA 3 ports and M.2 NVME (PCIe Gen2 x4) slot
  3. CPU is a Intel Core i3-8100 3.6GHz with intel UHD Graphics 630
  4. 16GB DDR4 RAM
  5. PSU and SSD and a DVD Writer
  6. GPU: AFox GTX750 Ti 2GB - NVIDIA chipset (dont intend on using this)

Do you think I would need an HBA card for the extra 5 HDDs or should I use one of the PCIE 2.0 x 1 slots for a PCIE to SATA expansion card with the ASM1064?

I do have an old flashed Dell Perc H200 in the loft but I hear they run hot and use more power? plus I would then have to give up my x16 slot which Im saving for a 10g Nic at some point to connect the two unraid servers together.

After the Plex Scenanagins (got a Lifetime many years ago at £60), I decided that a Lifetime Unraid was better now than waiting.

It'll never get cheaper after all.

Data Corruption?

I've been working on setting up SD card ingestion using rclone with verification on and am getting lots of verification failures when sending the data to an Unraid NFS or SMB share.

I swapped the mount point to use a Synology NFS share instead and it verified first attempt.

I done 2 attempts using Unraid shares with 12 then 14 failures. I also ran additional checksum comparisons and confirmed the source and destination were not exactly the same.

Additionally the SD card checksums are not changing between runs at all.

It's looking like anything I copy to Unraid is corrupting. I'm going to do additional testing from more devices, wondering what i should be looking at or methods of testing other than just transferring a bunch of data and then verifying it.

Initial data upload

Finally, after a really long time, I can get started with Unraid. (I bought the license 2 years ago)

I had a Qnap TS-212 NAS with 2 2TB WD drives in JBOD. (at least) 1 drive started to fail.

I also have 1 Seagate 4TB external drive with (almost) all my data. That Seagate is a backup drive for my old Qnap TS-212; I has a complete copy of the Qnap data.

Last backup was from some time before the one WD drive started to fail; so the Seagate has most of the data; but may miss some of the last data I put on the NAS.

I now have a HP Elitedesk G8 SFF (with 1 512GB SSD) and 2 new WD 12TB drives (shucked WD Elements). I want to use 1 for array and 1 for parity.

I have looked at Unraid for years, and I think I now know how to start all this.

1 Install 1 WD 12TB drive in Elitedesk, and install Unraid (I want to use internal boot on the SSD).

2 Setup basic file structure according to Trash Guides (basically a share called 'data' with several subfolders). And maybe some shares for some other data.

3 Install basic plugins; basically follow IBRACORP's Zero to Hero videos, including Unassigned Devices and Unassigned Devices Plus (so I can use the external Seagate and WD drives).

4 Temporarily disable cache for the shares.

5 Plug the Seagate drive in to USB of the Elitedesk and start copying data from Seagate to Unraid.

6 When that's done; plug 1 WD drive in at a time (using sata) and see if Unraid manages to see the files - that's why Unassigned Devices (Plus) was needed - and if it does; see if there's anything on it, that wasn't on the Seagate drive and copy it to the Elitedesk.

(In a previous post here; people have said Unraid with Unassigned Devices (Plus) should be able to read/see the files on a QNAP JBOD drive.)

7 When all data is on the Elitedesk; install 2nd new 12TB drive, assign it as parity drive and let Unraid do it's thing.

8 Enable cache for shares.

9 Done.

Does that seem right? Looks like I shouldn't install parity drive before ingesting all the data; since it would make transfer much slower.

And Unraid has now a build-in 'file explorer' so I can use that to pick and choose files/folders and transfer them from the Seagate and old WD JBOD drives to the new array?

Older posts seem to suggest I should use Krusader of something else, but I've seen newer posts Unraid has build-in 'file explorer'. I would like to have an easy way to pick and choose folders and files myself and copy them to the new share(s), since the file structure on the old Qnap and Seagate drive is different than on the new Unraid system.

EDIT: another thing; is preclearing drives on Unraid still a thing? If so; that would come between step 1 and 2, and take a long time I think.

Cache and SMB shares

Hi, I'm just setting up my first unraid server, coming from truenas.

Main purpose is to have a file server + some docker apps

Configuration is:

6tb HDD for parity

4tb HDD for data

+ I have 2x2TB nvme drives I'd would like to use for cache; I've set up an array with the 2 HDDs and a Pool in raid1 with the SSD, and I see them like 2 separate shares.

I would like to have 1 share only (6tb total space?) made of both the array + the cache and have unraid decide where to place each file based on usage. Is that possible? I would like to avoid to have 2 separate shares.

Thanks!

Unraid Cache

Is a cache for unraid necessary? I have around 90tbs of drive space with no cache. I use Plex and stream untouched 4K Blurays and also stream music from my server, would a cache drive help anything speed up or help with multiple sources hitting the array?

I forgot to mention I run plex and music off a different computer that is linked to the array over 10gb, My Unraid is strictly for storage
Thanks!

I had some weird containers showing up after rebooting to upgrade to 7.3.2

The containers in question (I don't fully recall the name, because I deleted them) where golden_something and infallible_something. Both of them didn't start, showed as stats rebuilding and had nothing in the log. I was not able to access them through the docker interface due to the website kept spinning. I removed both the containers from the main page and then I was able to access the docker tab again.

Anybody had a similar experience with the upgrade?

Struggling a bit with UNRAID. SMB Previous Versions possible??

I've been going back and forth with UNRAID for a few years and what has been a dealbreaker for me is that I cannot find any way to have my ZFS snapshot versions show in Previous Versions in Windows, does anyone know if and how this is possible?

Is it also possible to create a schedule for snapshots to be 'snapshotted' after a certain amount of time? For context I am using ZFS Master.

Thanks
