Showcase - Dedicated Space 7.1.4 setup update - I think I'm done (for now)

  • TV: 98-inch TCL X11K
  • Front L/R: 2x SVS Ultra Evolution Pinnacle
  • Center: SVS Ultra Evolution Center
  • Side surrounds: 2x RSL W25E
  • Rear surrounds: 2x RSL W25E
  • Atmos: 4x RSL C34E MKII in-ceiling speakers
  • Subwoofer: Klipsch RP-1400SW with WA-2 wireless kit
  • AVR: Onkyo TX-RZ50
  • External amp: Fosi Audio V3 with a 48V/5A GaN power supply

My previous setup was mostly Klipsch RP: RP-8000F II towers, RP-504C center, RP-600M II surrounds, RP-500SA Atmos speakers, and a pair of JBL Stage 2 240H speakers for the other Atmos channels. See my prior post here.

It sounded good, and I really did not need to replace it. But the room just never felt "Home Theater". Yes there was a big screen and some legit speakers but it never felt "right". Also... I got the itch.

The whole upgrade started when I received a random B&H alert for a single SVS Ultra Evolution Pinnacle for $1,500 closeout new, about $1,000 below its normal price. Buying one tower without knowing where the second one would come from was probably not the most logical decision, but the discount was too good to pass up.

While I waited to find another one, I started selling the Klipsch system. Because I had pieced it together through various sales and discounts, I was able to get back almost everything I originally paid for it. That made the upgrade a lot easier to justify (so I tell myself...)

Eventually, I found another single Pinnacle and an Ultra Evolution Center. They were open-box through Electronic Expo.

Gotta give credit to that site/company here - Their customer service was excellent. They contacted me and said the condition of the open-box speakers they had was not up to the standard they were comfortable shipping. Instead, they offered to have brand-new replacements sent directly from SVS at the same open-box price.

Naturally, I accepted.

Then the shipment arrived, and instead of one Pinnacle, SVS had shipped me a factory-sealed pair!!!

So I went from struggling to find a matching second tower to suddenly owning three Pinnacles.

Now I am trying to decide what to do with the third one. Return it? Sell it? Keep it as a backup? Find some completely ridiculous way to use a full-size Pinnacle as a rear speaker? Maybe us it as an Atmos speaker ????????????

The rest of the room also changed quite a bit. I replaced the visible surrounds and Atmos modules with four RSL W25E in-wall speakers and four RSL C34E MKII in-ceiling speakers.

The sound is a major step up. The room feels more seamless and enveloping, and transitions between the surround and height channels are much harder to pinpoint. The cleaner appearance may be just as important, though. Funny enough, this was one of the largest drivers for changing everything up. I always HATED the look of the on-wall Atmos speakers. On top of that, they did not have WAF, so double whammy. This setup is so much cleaner.

Suprisingly, the biggest game changer may not have been the speaker upgrade. It was adding the black wood slat wall behind the TV and painting the room a matte dark green.

When the room lights are off, the combination of the black wall and the X11K’s local dimming makes the area surrounding the screen almost completely disappear. During darker scenes, it can be difficult to tell where the television ends and the wall begins. It gives the room a much more immersive, almost floating-screen effect. Very different from the lighter colors and semi gloss paint that use to be on the wall and ceilings. Room also feels much warmer and comfortable now being brown and green vs standard cold light grey and white.

The Klipsch system was genuinely good, but between the SVS front stage, the in-wall and in-ceiling RSL speakers, and the black slat wall, this feels like a completely different room now.

Also, dropped the TV to 28" off the floor!!

Overall, I thinking I'm fairly endgame at this point and it didn't cost me as much as I would have thought overall: https://i.imgur.com/VWA8xOl.png

Over the past 3.5 years I have been able to put together a “home theater” in our multiuse basement. It’s not a dedicated theater room but it has become a place to decompress and enjoy mainly movies and some tv series/music. The space is a 10’ x 14’ nook open to a larger basement. The back wall is 22’ from the screen wall. I sit 12ft from the 145” ALR/CLR screen with a 45 to 50 degree viewing angle. It has been mostly a DIY project with purchase of used and new equipment. The viewing area ceiling and walls are covered in triple black velvet fabric for increased immersion.

A/V components consist of:

Denon 3800 as pre/pro with Dirac Live Bass Control Buckeye Hypex NCx500 amp for LCR Buckeye NC502MP amp for surrounds Emotiva BasX amp for Atmos LCR speakers KEF R11 nonmeta Surrounds KEF Q750’s (upgraded from Q150’s) Ceiling atmos Sonance Mag6R Powered Subwoofers are six Starke SW15’s three stacked each front wall corner and an Arendal 1723 2S nearfield behind sofa.

I have been slowly building this setup for over 10 years and it is finally at a point that looks good enough to show off. I just finished the lighting. The room is a weird L-shape - you can see my office area next to the bar. The beam caused some sound reflection issues but pretty happy with it overall.

Discussion - Entertainment People with a 7’ tall stack of stuff on a rack, what is all that?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I’m curious. What I mean is sometimes I see people with sick home theaters and then in the back of the room there’s just this huge rack that looks like a server rack full of electronics. What is all that? I know one is an AVR, and maybe a DVD/Blueray player, but what’s the rest? Do you really need all that?

Tech Support Martin Logan Xt vs non Xt

Upvotes

Hi there, I could use some help choosing my new setup. Is there an audible difference between the Motion XT series and the non-XT series? I definitely want the larger C100 center speaker for my home theater and would like to pair it with the F10 floor-standing speakers. However, the F10s apparently use different tweeter and midrange drivers. Would it be better to choose the B100 bookshelf speakers instead, since they share the same tweeter and midrange drivers? Unfortunately, the F100s are out of my budget.

Option 1: F10 floor-standing speakers C100 center MP10 surrounds 1x SB-3000

Option 2: B100 bookshelf speakers C100 center MP10 surrounds 2x SB-3000

Option 3: B100 bookshelf speakers C100 center MP10 surrounds 1x SB-5000

Which setup would be the best option? I have a good offer on two SB-3000s (the older version), but I could also go with an SB-5000. Which would be the better choice? Thanks.

Tech Support Formovie Theater - Intermittent 1-second black screens on all sources after OTA update. Has anyone experienced this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone has experienced this before because I’m running out of ideas.

I own a Formovie Theater purchased in May 2024.

Just after the latest OTA firmware update (Android TV 14), the projector started showing brief black screens.

The image goes completely black for about 1 second.

The sound continues normally.

The image comes back by itself.

It happens repeatedly, roughly once every minute.

There are no error messages or reboots.

The issue happens with the projector’s built-in apps (YouTube, etc… ) and also with an external MacBook connected via HDMI.

Different HDMI cables have been tested and the problem is exactly the same.

Troubleshooting already done :

Complete factory reset.

Reconfigured everything from scratch.

After the reset, the projector worked normally for about 40 minutes, then the black screens came back.

Unfortunately, this is not the first issue I’ve had with this projector. During the warranty period, the remote control repeatedly lost its pairing and had to be paired again over and over. After the latest OTA update, the LED indicators remained permanently lit even when the projector was turned off (this was eventually fixed by a later firmware update). Shortly afterwards, the intermittent black screen issue started.

FORMOVIE SUPPORT :

I contacted Formovie support as soon as the issue appeared.

Their responses have been frustrating because I still don’t have a clear diagnosis or a solution.

They first acknowledged my black screen issue, told me they had reported it to their development team, and said they were monitoring feedback related to the latest OTA firmware update.

They then asked me to perform a complete factory reset. I did, but the problem returned after about 40 minutes.

At this point, I’m still left with a projector that cannot be used normally, and I have no clear answer as to whether this is a firmware problem or a hardware failure. I feel like I’m being asked to wait without any real troubleshooting or solution.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with a Formovie Theater or another projector?

If you solved it, what was the actual cause?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Showcase - Dedicated Space Home Theater “Finishing” Touches

Hi all,

Wrapped up some recent finishing touches to my dedicated home theater space. Started the build last year, got all the equipment set up so the space was usable and took a break to build out a garage gym.

Replaced a couch with Valencia Theater Seating. I was on the fence about the switch but I’m happy I did. The seats really upgrade the ambience imo and give it more of the theater feel. The couch I had there will be repurposed to a multipurpose room just outside the theater where I’ve got a 100in TV coming that’s more for gaming or watching sports.

Covered the back wall of the screen and part of the ceiling with velvet to make a black box. My walls were painted Tricorn black, but this really made a huge difference with light control.

I’m undecided about what to do for carpeting. This room is technically a bedroom, and I don’t want to go having the carpet in this room be different than all the rest of the rooms on the floor (resale considerations). My solution was to find the biggest, black area rug that I could and at least have that for the stage area. Found a low pile 9x12 carpet that perfectly covered the width of the room and extends to just beyond the seats.

Also mounted my surrounds to the wall to get them off of the stands, raised my rears since my seat backs are much taller now. Yes, I need to finish concealing the wires. Using raceways for now but will probably hide them by installing black acoustic slate panels. I didn’t dig in to the walls for the build and just used baseboard raceways.

Last thing on the to do list for now is to get the upfiring Atmos speakers mounted to the screen wall. Probably a job that will get done this weekend.

After that…calibration. Again lol. And yes, the front stage is tight, but the speakers are pulled forward and toed in enough to where there is no mudiness on the low end. I’ll calibrate due to the new pole placement and rears, but I was happy with how things sounded prior. I thought about going with a false wall and an AT screen, but I didn’t want to shorten the room any more, and that closet on the front left really didn’t allow for there to be a lot of real estate to make the wall in the first place.

Room: 12x16
Projector: JVC NZ700
Screen: Stewart Cinescope 135”
AVR: Denon 3800
Sound: full Klipsch Reference Premiere II, 7.2.2

Any other things I should consider doing to the space?

1 x KEF R2C
2x KEF Q150
2x Paradigm Atoms SE (will be replaced by Q150s at some point)

4x Paradigm H65A v2 (in ceiling)
2x SVS PB2000 Pro

Display LG G6 83in

PC on the other side of the wall for gaming (RTX 4090, 7800x3d, 64 GB of DDR5 6000mhz cl32 RAM and 2x 2TB NVME drives)

The acoustic panels are home made, I will also add some more at some point but I need more free time lol

Still a bit of work to do, but I like it.

Tech Support HDMI to mini display glitch (have searched FAQs)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So this has just started happening after many years of no issues.

I replaced the HDMI cable and fully rebooted everything but that's made no difference. Also cuts out completely from time to time, reconnecting itself after a few seconds. I've also tried the different inputs (this one usually has a games console that has held signal without issue).

I suspect it's hardware related as I'm using a 2009 Samsung tv and 2017 MacBook air that are probably both past renewal tbh.

Willing to accept it's due to the inevitable passage of time, but thought if anyone might have an idea of what's actually happening, and if I can fix it, it'd be the folks around here.

Thanks

Purchasing US Subwoofer recommendations for large concrete basement

Hey all

Looking for some advice on subwoofers for my new home theater setup. My theater resides in a large (~400 sqft 3500 cubic ft) block wall concrete floor basement.

Currently, I have a single Klipsch R12SW matched up to Klipsch R820F towers.

I have to crank the system pretty high to fill out the space and am afraid I am pushing the sub to its limits. Primary use is for movies.

All that said, with a limited budget remaining (around 500) would I be better off getting a second R12SW or getting something like a single Monoprice SW15 or Klipsch SPL-120? I think maybe 20% more headroom is about what I would be happy with.

Other subs I have considered are the SVS sub 1000 or RSL 10S MKII, but given the size and material of the room, I am not sure if the smaller 10 inch cone or sealed box would limit me.

Anyone with experience in similar room / sub combos have input? I will aim to upgrade further down the road, just looking for a good place to start.

Thanks!

Discussion - Equipment Where to get Projector Screen? (Read Body Text)

Post image
0 Upvotes

So i'm looking for a bit of an unusual projector screen i think. I'm looking for a projector screen thats not UST, and instead just for a regular projector thats hanging on the ceiling.

- I need it to be 72inch / 165cm MAXIMUM
- And i would like it to have only very thin black Bezels and not the usual huge black bezels, which i think look very unaesthetic for my usecase.
- White Screen, NOT Grey.

Where do yall get Projector Screens with such thin Bezels in general, and does somebody know a Projector screen for exactly what i'm looking for?

Thanks in advance!

Tech Support Learning How To Use Dirac Live

What’s up everybody I’m now to using Dirac and need some advice lol. I recently upgraded my receiver to an Onkyo TX-RZ30. It is my first AVR using Dirac Live. I hope to my setup (all Klipsch RP ii except for the sub) sound a bit warmer. It’s been frustrating trying to calibrate the system with the Onkyo controller app. The receiver will automatically shut down or tell me to plug the mic in prompt. App is slow as shit. I know there is a way to do it on a laptop but I’m not sure what I’m supposed to download to my MacBook to do this without paying for it since it comes with the Onkyo. I finally got it to work with the app without crashing during the calibration process. While I continue to learn this software, does anyone here have advice on how to make this easier to use?

One of my Seatcraft Sienna Seats broke. They still make that model and I could two replacement seats. Probably for around $1.4k. So, I looked around for getting a new set entirely. Came across Weilandia on amazon. Not a well known brand like Seatcraft/Octane/...

Tech Support Help with room layout/acoustics

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

We currently have a 5.1.2 and a 110" screen. The room is about 146" x 252" x 96". The 146" measurements are taken from the distance of the wall the projector is on. I didn't factor in that open area with the one panel. Eventually we wanted to add barstool seats behind the couch, and the cabinet is just temporary. I'm thinking about building a console area under the stairs.

Equipment:
Martinlogan Dynamo 800x
Martinlogan Motion 4- surrounds near back curtains
Martinlogan Motion 30
Two atmos speakers - above couch about a foot forward
Denon 3500h receiver
Epson 5050ub

I'm trying to get ideas for improvements for acoustics and layout ideas. Part of me wants to finish building out that all and close the entire area. but I'm not sure if I could just put up some panels instead. The lower level is where our basement and utilities are and the water can sometimes be an issue.

Thanks!

Tech Support RZ30 Speaker Power Pop

Hello, been having this issue for a while now. Whenever my system turns on I get a really fast high pitch power pop put of my speakers.

Currently running an rz30 powering 2 canton tower speakers and a canton center channel. And 2 bookshelf surrounds. Video output is from my nexigo aurora pro mk2.

I have everything running through the AVR. I notice it most when I put on content that has dolby surround and the AVR switches to dolby and it only happens once.

Any ideas?

Tech Support Newbie question: is my setup capable of streaming 4K 120Hz HDR to Bravia 8 II?

Upvotes

Got my first new TV in 20 years. I've done a bunch of reading but I'm having trouble grasping all the different specs.

Aside from OTA sports, I stream using Quantum Fiber 500 Mbps ---> 14 foot cat 6 cable ---> USB-C hub ---> Thunderbolt/USB 4 port on Macbook Air M2.

The other Thunderbolt port is USB C to HDMI 2.1 Adapter ---> 20 ft certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable ---> 4K 120Hz HDMI input on Bravia 8 II TV.

When I play 4K HDR Video ULTRA HD 120 FPS - Dolby Vision full screen on Professional, the highest setting youtube offers is 2160p60 HDR.

If I go into Picture settings, the Brightness, Contrast & Gamma say SDR and HDR Tone Mapping is greyed out and set to Gradation Preferred.

I've dug through the Bravia menus and I can't find anything showing specifically what signal the TV is receiving.

Assuming the video description is accurate, does this mean there's a problem somewhere in my setup?

Thanks!

Purchasing US Is AVR or Amp needed ?

Room size is 13 x 16, we'll be about 71/2 to 8 feet away from the TV. The TV is 55-inch, have Panasonic 820 blu ray player. Thinking of splurging on the Triangle Solstice 3 Bookshelf Speakers, with possibly getting the Triangle center speaker in 2027 . Would consider getting a Wiim, but is it needed.?. Is an AVR worth it for mainly TV watching,?. thinking of a 2.1 set up . Had considered the Klipsch the Sevens II until I found out you have to pay an extra 399. on them for Dirac support ( I think). Appreciate the help. USA buying
