I've been trying to save up for a NAS and the whole shebang for a while now, but unfortunately I'm not there yet. Currently I have ~50TB of data in cloud storage, but due to sudden life circumstances I can no longer pay for it. I also don't know anyone who can hold this data. Is there somewhere reliable I can dump it all into without worrying over losing it?

The monthly ~$100 is what's hurting, I can pay a bit more for egress (a thing I've heard) if I have a lower monthly payment. I would also need a service that doesn't scan my files. For uh, AI research and such etc of course.

Over the past few days, I made an archive of all (currently available) IKEA assembly and care manuals. Every PDF for every item currently available on ikea.us has been archived and can be cloned via git or manually downloaded here.

I don't really have any real justification for making the archive other than it's really difficult to find an IKEA assembly manual once an item has been taken off the site. More than that though, it was fun making the archive :)

Fun fact: IKEA treats every color variant as a different product with a different assembly PDF, even though the instructions are in black and white.

You can search by name, brand, or even article number to find the assembly or care manual you need. Hopefully someone ends up finding this useful!

I have a 400-page book and a mirrorless camera mounted on a tripod, so taking consistent, high quality photos isn't the problem.

What I'm looking for is software that can process all of these images in bulk.

Ideally, the workflow would be:

1)I photograph every page in order.

2)I import all of the images into the software.

3)The software automatically detects the page boundaries, corrects perspective if necessary, crops each page consistently, enhances readability (if needed), and exports everything as a single PDF in the correct order.

OCR support would be a nice bonus, but it's not essential.

What software would you recommend for this workflow? I'm looking for something that works well with hundreds of images rather than requiring me to manually adjust every page.

I don't know if social media has completely ruined me but i feel like i'm constantly collecting new interests At the start of the year i wanted to read more books, so i kept saving recommendations like Project Hail Mary, The Martian, and The Spellshop. Then my T!kTok turned into café videos, restaurant reviews, travel itineraries, and recipes i swear i'm going to make one day. Throw in movies my friends keep telling me to watch, YouTube videos i wanted to come back to, and random workout routines i saved for "next Monday" and now i've got recommendations scattered literally everywhere.

The problem isn't finding new things anymore... it's remembering where i saved them. 

I've got saved posts from Facebook, Instagram collections, T!kTok favorites,notes, bookmarks, and hundreds of screenshots. Half the time i know i've already saved something, i just have no clue which app it's hiding in.

Does anyone use an app to organize your interests that's actually easy to stick with? Not really looking for another productivity app or habit tracker. I just want one place where i can keep books, movies, restaurants, travel ideas, recipes, and everything else without jumping between six different apps.

Last year I won a storage unit auction for some antique furniture. After getting in I discovered that behind it all was anywhere between 200 - 300 magnetic tapes of all varieties. Many of them 3/4” U-Matic. 20 or so Type A / B C reels. And then some beta cam and some audio reels (a couple of which are NPR reels for broadcast from the 70s from some early All Things Considered shows).

There are some relatively historic items. A master recording of Nelson Mandela speaking at the Bethel AME church in Atlanta in the 90s. Video reel of Nina Simone performing in a bar in London. Some others. At least that is what the labels say.

Even some older EIAJ reels.

I purchased various machines, along with what was in the unit. Currently perhaps 15 audio reel to reel decks (some functional some not), 2 - 3 U-Matic decks (1 for sure working), 3 Sony helical scan decks one for sure working.

Plan was to clean and digitize them myself over time. But as you know better than I, some of these very likely need to be baked, cleaned, and professionally done so I have held off.

I’ve been fortunate to find almost all of my machines for next to nothing. That being said I am not swimming in cash to have all of these converted for tens of thousands.

I do need to get some sort of return on my investment here. My wife entertains my hobby as long as I love what I win and don’t cost us additional cash.

My question here is: Anyone in this community know if any professional or extremely skilled hobbyists that would likely make a deal? I can provide all of these machines I have accumulated and use that as credit towards the cost of the conversions?

Not opposed to laying out more cash. Not trying devalue the expertise required to do this. I’m just looking for a better option than mortgaging my house to digitize and do something with them.

​​ I have a number of backup drives that I was using to rotate some data around . So most of them contain much of the same data , but some of them might have newer versions of the files . I'd like to consolidate all of these into one backup version . What's the best way of merging everything into one source that just preserves the latest file date? It is thousands of files , so I have no way of going through them individually .thanks!

In theory, I still have the active versions of these files also , but there may be some files on the backups that don't exist in the active files, and I would want to keep a copy of those . ​

I was wondering if anyone had any experiences/opinions on external hard drive bays of a specific kind or company.

1. Cache drive
I already own a 4 TB Gen4 NVMe that currently lives in a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure. I bought it last year for about €200. Today I’d have to spend around €75 on a 500 GB NVMe just for Unraid.
Would you install the 4 TB drive inside the server and use it for cache, appdata/system and frequently accessed files, or keep it external and buy a smaller SSD? My home network is 2.5 GbE.
2. Motherboard
I’m having second thoughts about the Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4.
It only has 4 SATA ports, and once I install the 10 GbE NIC, the only PCIe x16 slot is occupied, making future SATA/HBA expansion difficult.
Would you:
keep it until I actually need more than 4 drives, or
replace it now with something more expandable?
If you’d replace it, which DDR4 LGA1700 ATX motherboard would you recommend?

Hi everyone! I have years of texts with my dad on my iPhone that I never want to lose. He recently passed and I’ve set them to never auto-delete, but I know iPhones can be unpredictable (failed updates, water damage, lost/stolen phone, etc.) and I don’t want to rely on the phone itself as my only copy. I’m looking for advice on the best tools or methods to export the full thread off the phone with photos and attachments intact, whether iCloud backup alone is “safe enough” or if I need a separate export, any way to get a physical or printed copy as a backup to the backup, and how you’d store it long-term so it’s still readable and accessible in 10-20 years.

I just bought a nice BR DL Mdisk drive for my Blu-ray collection, and found 50- 50GB disks for like 75 bucks. Doing than math if I did it right that I’d like 2.5 TB that I could store with a friend offsite and get more: what’s the general consensus on BR DL name brand disks as backup storage?

I'm not looking for OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, pCloud, or Syncthing. I'm already familiar with concepts like delta sync, incremental sync, and block-level synchronization.

I'm looking for a native Windows tool that performs efficient local incremental synchronization between disks, similar to rsync's behavior. I'm specifically asking about local disk-to-disk synchronization on Windows, not cloud synchronization.

I know about:

• FreeFileSync
• rclone
• rsync via WSL/Cygwin/MSYS2

But is there a native Windows implementation that supports true block-level or delta synchronization?

I'm surprised that after all these years there still doesn't seem to be a native Windows equivalent to rsync.

Or is WSL simply the de facto solution nowadays?

I understand that SAS drives use more power compared to SATA, is this by alot? I am looking to migrate my media from my PC and set up my Plex on the NAS.

What if it doesn't charge when I plug it in? What if the battery is burst? Is there any way to recover the data if it doesn't turn on for some reason?

Is there a certain voltage to plug it into? Maybe I'm being way too cautious but this is the only source of this data I have left. It's like 10,000 songs

In the video there are 75k images filtered in about 1s. Everything is indexed, embedded and cached automatically in the background tasks that are visible to the user and could be easily controlled from the task bar at the top of the screen.  I am not using FAISS or any vector databases yet. It also python, so there are still a huge room for further optimizations. The speed is mostly because of proper caching. It took me quite a while to get here as the project is quite complex and every part of it should work in tandem with all other features, such as completely local personal recommendation engine, which increases the complexity of things quite a bit. It supports all four major modalities - images, music, text and video, although the internal mechanisms are not completely unified yet, it is one of the goals to make the project basically the Google for both local and remote files but without any reliance on a centralized servers.

To be honest the project is not yet completely ready for prime time yet and the installation process might be a bit complicated for some. But I really hope to make something really useful for local and p2p content search and discovery eventually.

Hello. I bought an old HDD. The SMART status looks good: no reallocated sectors and less than 1000 h of use.

However, when I tested the surface with Victoria, it showed many sectors with access times over 1 s.

The seller claimed it had only been used as an external HDD, but data recovery software found some system files on it.

Is there anything I can check to see if the SMART data has been manipulated?

I started my hoarding journey some months ago, I currently have:

I've a Be quiet Straight power 11 1000W, how many HDD's can I power from the DRIVE ports safely? I wanted to buy 2 Molex adapters and power the small drives through that, and all big drives + wd black directly from the included psu cables
