Before I start this, I'd like to begin by saying I am a proud Bruin (class of '24 business econ) who was once a high schooler also wanting to get into a prestigious college.

I recently watched a YouTube video of a senior opening their college decisions. They applied to basically every elite school -- Vanderbilt, Duke, UCLA, UC Berkeley, the Ivies, etc. They got rejected from all the Ivies, and the most selective school they got into was UCLA.

They were understandably disappointed. They had great stats; but what surprised me was that they barely seemed happy about UCLA (even though is consistently one of the best universities in the world and can definitely compete with the Ivies in every field)

Then, near the end of the video, before they'd even spent a single day in class (class of 2030), they said they were already planning to transfer out of UCLA.

This made me realize how obsessed a lot of high schoolers have become with prestige. Many are no longer satisfied with top 20s, they feel as if anything outside HYPSM is somehow a disappointment. Obviously HYPSM are dream schools. But UCLA is also a dream school for many high-achievers who get rejected every year. Treating UCLA like a safety school is insane.

While Ivies are obviously great schools, UCLA also offered me the same opportunities as many of those students. I landed in the same firms as Harvard and Yale students -- many of my classmates also ended up in the same rooms as HYPSM.

So please, do not disregard UCLA in most cases it is pretty damn close to an Ivy. For a middle class student who could not afford Brown or Dartmouth, UCLA gave me the opportunity to succeed and I believe this school has benefited me more than many ivies+ would.

I’ve been feeling really lost lately and keep overthinking my decision. I know this is a long post, so thanks to anyone who takes time to read it.

I’m an international student transferred from cc. I got into UCLA for Psych, I accepted the offer, and even went to orientation. But I canceled my enrollment eventually and chose a Diagnostic Radiography program at a not so well-known university in Australia instead. The program is four years.

The first reason was money. UCLA would’ve cost me around $84k a year including tuition and living expenses, so roughly $170k for two years. My parents would’ve had to take out loans for me to attend.

The four-year program in Australia costs about the same as two years at UCLA.

Second reason is career wise. If I get into Psych I’d probably need to spend even more money on a master’s degree just to have better job options, and even then it’s still not that easy to find a job. Radiography seems much more straightforward for employment, and the salary isn’t bad either.

But lately I’ve been second guessing everything. I feel like I gave up the whole UCLA experience, the campus, the people, the opportunities, and obviously the UCLA name. Part of me feels like I missed out on something huge. But meanwhile I kept questioning whether even if I go UCLA, it would really be worth spending that much money on a major I wasn’t particularly passionate about?

A lot of people think giving up UCLA was an insane decision, and I honestly still don’t know if I made a wrong choice. I’m feeling pretty lost. I’d really appreciate any advice or perspectives❤️

I graduated 2 months ago from CSUF with a bachelors degree in Sociology and Psychology. I have a 3.69 gpa and many of my professors in both fields liked me. I also interned for a semester at a clinic and did some parent group work there. I was also reccomended to do 7 cups by my faculty advisor to boost my resume (tho I just started a couple of days ago). I'm working on getting a job too.

A professor told me that no one gets into UCLA from CSUF. But I'm hoping at LEAST having 2 degrees would make me look nice, Any Clinical Psyc grads have any thoughts?

Looks like the 18 won't be going from Gayley>Strathmore>UCLA Gateway Plaza and back anymore. After 8/9 it's going to change it's turnaround point to Charles Young Dr. right outside lot 2. If you're coming from the Campus apartment/residential area I'm pretty sure the new nearest pickup spot will be on Westwood blvd in front of 100 medical plaza but I'm not sure because I can't find an actual map of the new route.

This might be a weird question but i’m an incoming freshman and im just curious where can i get fresh fruit on campus? i like to eat fruit for breakfast every morning and i keep it diverse. Kiwis, blueberries, apples, peaches, pineapples.

I know there are grocery stores near campus but Im imagining someplace i can just grab the fruit and run every morning instead of stocking up while shopping.

I just received an email today getting more info about my housing assignment but still no roommate. For context, I received a housing offer and accepting on July 3rd for Keystone-Mentone for a 2bed. Today I found out my unit number but still am not assigned a roommate. I’m just confused how this happens. Is it likely that the person housing is going to assign to me as a roommate has a later contract date than me? My assumption would be if they have the same contract start date they also would find out their unit number today too and then appear as my roommate? Could this be because I requested to room with someone who was offered a Keystone-Mentone on the same day as me but with a later contract date? If anyone else knows or has experience with this, any insight would be helpful. I’m just stressed because I’m moving in 2 weeks from now and still don’t know who my roommate is (since it’s unfurnished I can’t even start talking to my future roommate about which furniture/supplies we are each contributing)

Where are you guys getting clinical hours, and how easy is it to find opportunities to get them, anyway? What are the best options? I've considering medical scribing; how useful is that and is it one of the better means to do so or are there better alternatives?

Also, who are the best advisors on campus to contact for help with questions pertaining to the path to medical school?

I’m an incoming freshman and a bit anxious about choosing classes. Recently in UCLA Facebook groups I have seen multiple people who attended the recent NSO dates say that they got kicked out of their classes after registering due to the finals being within 24 hours of each other which isn’t allowed for freshmen.

I scoured the internet and couldn’t find such a rule but I wanted to see if anyone could confirm or deny if this was a thing or a new rule.

I wanted to take Math 31B and Math 32A both in my first quarter (math major and want to speed up grad). One final is from 6-9pm and the other is a day later 6-9pm. Would this be a full 24 hours apart to not be dropped? I’m a bit worried because from start times it is 24 hours but from the end time of the first to the start of the 2nd isn’t necessarily.

Hi, I’m an incoming freshman and was wondering if DARS should be updated for dual enrollment yet.

My orientation isn’t until August 24-25. I took Elementary Statistics, Intro to Computer Programming, and Spanish and I’m not sure if they would give me any sort of credit but I don’t see it on DARS yet and all my AP credit recently loaded in.

Another question regarding the foreign language requirement… I saw that previously taking a level 3 equivalent class would get it waived. I took 2 years of Spanish in high school and another semester through dual enrollment. But, this class at my local cc was technically Spanish 2 because Spanish 1 at the cc covered 2 full years of my high school’s Spanish. I’m wondering if I would be waived from foreign language or not since I have taken 3 levels of classes. It still shows I need to take it on DARS which is why I’m wondering if it’s all loaded in or not. For more context, when applying to UCs, my school instructed those who dual enrolled in Spanish 1 at the cc to list it twice on the application since it was 2 levels of Spanish.

My DARS currently only lists 1 more course (intermediate level) needed to fulfill the req so I’m confused as to whether they got that from my high school transcript having 2 years of Spanish and haven’t loaded in my dual enrollment or if I got no credit for any dual enrolled classes and really need to take another Spanish class.

If anyone is more knowledgeable than I am on DARS and the foreign language req, any opinions and advice would be helpful. Sorry for the long post I just really don’t want to take Spanish again.

Park La Brea

• Large residential community with many amenities
• Very walkable neighborhood; Close to shopping, restaurants, parks, and museums
• However, it is farther from UCLA compared to University Village
• Slightly more expensive rent

UCLA University Village

• Bit closer to UCLA - Likely easier school commute
• Opportunity to be part of a community with other UCLA families and graduate students
• Potentially more family-oriented environment with children in similar situations

For those who have lived in either place (especially with elementary school-aged children), which would you recommend and why?

My priorities are:

1. A good environment for my child
2. Easy school commute
3. Opportunities to meet other families
4. Overall quality of life during a one-year stay

im 18 years old and a upcoming second year ucla student. I graduated with a hs 4.1 gpa, I work hard and never do any of the "typical" teenage stuff if yk what i mean. I haven't done literally anything except study and occasionally when i was at uni hang out with friends. ive always been like a "goody two shoes" unfortunately
they put one hour screen time limit until i started college and no social media until i turned 16 (i get it)

i came home for the summer, and my parents have put back on my restrictions limiting me to one hour screen time. ?!?!!?!?

like im so sorry but i dont feel like theres any reason to do so. Im taking online summer courses, and none of my friends live in norcal (just moved up here). i genuinenly dont understand what im doing wrong for them to put these restrictions. i understood i guess when i was younger, but im an 18 year old uni student who works her butt off. i get social media and phones are bad or whatever but i have nothing else to do. ive done nothing wrong to them, so i dont understand why they keep putting these restrictions on. Theyve always been strict with me and rarely let me go to anything in High school, so im just like bruh what could POSSIBLY be the issue now.

i argue that i should get a job so i can get my own things and she doesnt want me to. its so frustrating because im an adult and they treat me like im the youngest in my family which doesnt make any sense

I got into a great school and had all A's, was a high intensity athlete and balanced volunteering over it all. i just dont understand why they keep doing this
