Am i wrong for thinking the old skin tone coding on LoveNikki could be fixed?

I got into an argument on a mobile game subreddit [r/LoveNikki](r/LoveNikki) because I suggested the developers could tweak or update their code to fix how different skin tones layer with clothing assets.
This got someone pretty pissed at me so I’ll try summarizing their reply in a more constructive way.. “the game's code is from 2015, and changing anything would completely destroy the base code and break every old asset in the game If you don’t know how coding works don’t make assumptions.” Add a bit more passive aggressiveness while reading but anyway they basically treated me like I was stupid for thinking code could be updated. This game gets updated regularly while making a pretty penny off of reoccurring players.
I don’t think my opinion is that crazy..I understand refactoring spaghetti code is incredibly time-consuming and expensive for a studio. But from another perspective, isn't it entirely possible to introduce modular code, universal blending layers, or new asset architectures for new items without deleting the old code base?? I feel like it’s just hiding behind developer laziness/budget limits. Yes, the game is established in China and the subreddit is based on the global sever version which gets updates after the CN sever. Americans would be more upset culturally over how the skin tone layering is limitedly implemented. However this complaint has gone on for years on all the games severs. It’s not just an American complaint even though we may be louder about our frustrations. This has been pecking at my brain for a few days. I know I should forget and move on but I’m petty and just wanna know if I’m right lol
