No matter what I can’t be satisfied with my voice, sometimes I feel like I wanna pursue vfs , I just am always somewhat insecure even when I make it more feminine just causes strain and it doesn’t sound as good as I’d like it, male puberty is the worst when it comes to voice.

I encountered this problem when playing my voice recordings backwards (so I can hear myself with fresh ears): Is the perceptual quality of vocal weight altered when playing in reverse?

I intuitively think it is not altered since the shape of the curve is merely mirrored and that shouldn’t change the rolloff in the frequency domain. But I just want to confirm since I do feel it sounds different.

This is somehow less embarrassing than just talking, but trying to get my feet wet because I think I keep freaking people out with my Dr. Girlfriend voice. Everyone I’ve listened to on this sub sounds amazing!

As a trans man, I’ve tried voice training exercises, but they either only last around 10 minutes before my voice goes back to normal or they end up hurting my throat. I have noticed, though, that over the past few years of just naturally forcing my voice a little lower during social interactions, I’ve ended up with a more androgynous or at least less feminine voice overall. Since I basically have all day every day to myself until September, I’m wondering if I could just intentionally speak in a deeper voice whenever I’m talking to myself or reading out loud. My goal is to get my voice as masculine as possible over the next 5 weeks. Could this actually work?

Im a trans man, ive been on T for a lil while now. Pre-transition I sang a lot (until I stopped cause dysphoria lol) and I wasnt terrible at it.

Now that my voice is slowly but surely stabilizing (not fully, as you can hear haha, Im still figuring out where all the notes are sitting now) I've started singing again. But even though I know my voice mostly passes when speaking, whenever I hear myself singing it sounds to me almost like my pre-T girly voice.

Not sure how much of that notion is dysphoria, so Id love some outside opinions on my singing voice.

(also ignore the crappy guitar playing, ive never been good at holding a tempo.)

Recently, I posted a clip of my voice and got some feedback on my false vocal folds. Here is a clip of me after attempting to fix it for a few days, but even then my voice doesn’t sound right. I really struggle with identifying these types of mistakes so I can’t understand what I’m doing wrong…is it related to vocal weight or is it still false vocal fold problems?

I'm out here wanting to sound like Ruffnut from How To Train Your Dragon or like Lynn Breedlove back in the day but all I can find is super Femme stuff! Y'all know anywhere I can find help with voices like that?

Now to preface this I cannot with certainty 100% know what I sound like to others but from what I can gather and from friends and relatives I have a fairly androgynous voice, (too high to come off as exclusively masculine but possibly dipping too much to be percived as cis feminine) I occasionally employ vocal fry and tend to bounce between 100 to 200hz in regular speech.

I play games that tend to skew toward male demographics but seem to occasionally have players that have traditionally feminine voices, so it's not like there are no women just clearly fewer of them In these spaces;

and while most people don't seem to care much, I will occasionally get people like repeatedly (like sometimes in the same sentence in a way that feels unnatural) like adress me by starting and ending sentences with like sir or using he him on me more than once. Is this just like a standard gamer thing or should I take this as a sign that I should skew toward using higher pitch and resonance exclusively and like heavily focus on my pitch floor?

I personally would prefer to have an androgynous voice but the idea of it appearing like an open invitation for some people to like start making guesses at what I am kinda lowk drives me insane to be honest.

Just wondering if any other trans mascs have experienced this. My voice has dropped considerably and I pass when talking online to strangers, but my family still thinks I sound feminine. I've asked people if I sound fem or have a gay voice and they just say that I sound like a normal guy.

I'm wondering if its to do with my appearance (my face doesnt pass) or just a psychological thing since the voice change has been so gradual over the past 2 years. For example: my partner was immitating me the other day and pitched his voice higher despite us being in the same vocal range. I think my mums the only one that has noticed a difference, she regularly thinks I'm one of the other men in the house when I shout from another room.

It doesn't bother me too much, just find it funny I suppose.

I’m trans masc pre-T and I’ve recently been using voice tuners cause I suck at hearing notes by ear anyways I notice everytime it usually put my voice at an C3 - F3 to an B2-A2 rang when i’m just speaking yet my voice is still feminine and when I use voice tools it always says i’m like 80-90% male yet my voice still doesn’t sound masculine I know pitch isn’t everything but with just how low it is I would expect for it to be at least sound androgynous but no it very clearly sound feminine and I’ve been trying to get a more masculine/passing voice for a year now but I don’t really think it will work (also off topic the highest my voice can go is a C5 - E5)

Hi, I'm FtM (pre everything, 18) and I was wondering how long it takes before you can actually achieve some sort of masculine sounding voice.

I've only been trying to voice train for 2 days at this point, so I don't expect to hear a masculine sound yet, but I was wondering how long it should take to start hearing it?

My ear can no longer distinguish masculine from feminine voices so I have no idea. I'm pretty large so I don't want to go with a super high/forward voice but I'm not sure if this is too much of the lower/masc part of the blend.

Hello, I've been voice training for a couple months now and while I've made progress I feel kinda stuck. I don't think my voice is passing but I can't quite identify what's wrong with it. If anyone knows what the problem I'm facing is and what exercises I could do to address it, then info on that'd be greatly appreciated. 

Here's the text I read in the audio: 

"At first it laments the loss of its mother, yet praises her for her care for it in its youth. It then proceeds to express a longing for a return to childhood bliss, which I find to be the most touching and beautiful part. It continues with a remembrance of its father and a saying of goodbyes. But then it speaks to the cruelty in the world; and the desire to both hide from the barbarity of it all, but also to explore its richness and wonder. ending with a statement of love for the world in all its beauty." 

There is a thinness, a strain that is literally always present and immediately marks a voice as being trained. I can hear someone talking for less than a second and instantly tell whether they have been exposed to testosterone just based on the voice. I don't want to sound like this. I don't want to sound passably feminine I just want to sound like a normal woman this isn't fair none of this is fair

Curious to see if there’s any improvements, or ways to make my “casual” voice more similar to my “practiced” voice.

I’ve been transitioning forever, but feel like I’ve allowed my voice to be somewhat of an afterthought as it sits in a pretty femme andro perceptive realm.

im a couple months on testosterone, but i kept at voice training anyway - though i fear it still reads as female

i don't know much about voice training and kinda do it off the cuff, learning to raise my pitch by talking to my cat , trying to copy what people do when talking about resonance

anyway, I'm training by trans-ing Sheogorath in oblivion, most clips will have a delay filter

first one is pre-filter, its the best one I've done that's close to my normal voice but without sounding like my male voice in falsetto first piece first piece

second one is probably my favorite, but i cant seem to reproduce it second piece

here's one that pretty much is just slightly better than a higher pitched version of my male voice third piece

and this is what ive been trying to avoid eww, yucky

like, im bad with consistency and i don't know if i can pass, but maybe i have been listening to my voice too much

Do please help us commenters help you! Here are some of the most important questions I often see un-answered in recent posts:

1. What framework are you using to understand the sound of voices? If you speak the language of size/weight/pitch/pronunciation/prosody, and I start jabbering about height, open quotient, and embouchure, then communication breaks down and you're confused. Sure, if you stick around long enough you'll learn what's what, but even today I see the same words and phrases used to mean different things by different groups. (Yes, some of us are trying to fix that, but it's a generational process.) Tell me your language and I'll speak it to you.
2. What are your precise goals? I'm a firm advocate for having two or three "goal-voice" models at least until you're generally happy with your own sound. You can change your goals! But in the context of a help-request, I'm trying to compare your sound against the sound of your goal to figure out what to recommend today. Improve that, and something else will be first in line. Longer-term, concrete and consciously-chosen goals help you cast aside the nagging doubt in your head about whether you sound masc-enough or fem-enough.
3. What do you think is wrong with your own sound, in the language of point 1? People often (and very wisely) advocate ear-training, but this is your chance to figure out whether the problem is your production or your perception (or perhaps even your understanding).
4. What are you doing / What have you tried so far to fix it? If you're looking for help, and you get advice to do the thing you're already doing, how helpful is that? Conversely, if you mention doing a useless / counterproductive / unrelated thing, I'd like to know that and set you straight. Now I'll be the first to say there are differences of opinion about the risk/reward profile of certain things and the plural of anecdote is not data, but that is a separate rant for another day. The point is, your explanation of your struggle with the issue to date tells me how to write most effectively for you.

I’ve had some on and off voice training and try to use my more feminine on a day to day basis, but would appreciate any feedback or tips on how to sound more natural.
I’ve had people say “you have such a nice voice” and also people call me out for it sounding fake, so I’m not really sure what to think, other than it doesn’t give me as much dysphoria as my pre-training deeper voice. I’d still like to improve it and mostly just don’t know where to specifically improve.
