The Silph Road is primarily focused on discoveries and analysis related to Pokemon GO, as well as constructing an in-person network of Pokemon GO enthusiasts. General discussion topics (Jokes, stories, a photo of a recent catch) would likely be better suited for another subreddit, such as a general subreddit like /r/PokemonGO, or /r/Pokemon, or a subreddit with a more specific focus, like /r/PokemonGoSnap, /r/PokemonBuddy, /r/ShinyPokemon, /r/PoGoRaids, /r/TheSilphArena, /r/PokemonGOTrades, /r/PokemonGOFriends, or /r/NianticWayfarer.

The Silph Road is heavily moderated to promote civility/courtesy, and high-quality content and discussion. You can read our full policies in the sidebar, but don't be surprised if a comment is removed for being rude, cynical, or off-topic. We strive to foster civil discussion about the game. We are first and foremost a network of real people, and this network is being built by volunteers! If you simply want to complain or bring something to Niantic's attention, your post would be better suited elsewhere.

Research

The community culture here also attracts the more analytically-minded element of Pokemon GO. Consequently, the Silph Research group was formed to align this brainpower and leverage the massive Silph datasets that the community can gather. We post our findings in infographics, videos, and walls of text on Reddit. Check out the top bar for links to the current pools.

Idea/Suggestion [CONCEPT] Rewards for completing each species full Pokedex entry!

Thumbnail

One of my driving experiences in Pokemon Go is comprehensively completing the Dex entry for as many individual species as I can. For my purposes, this means collecting the species' regular, shiny, 100%, lucky, XXS, and XXL variants, in addition to any shadow, purified, mega, or gigantamax versions available. (The Pokedex does track costumes, but I don't count these towards completion, since more can always be added).

I've always thought it would be fun for the game to give you a small incentive to doing this. My idea would be to give a boost to catch candy for that species once you have done so - maybe this could work similarly to how Mega Evolution provides a bonus. Another idea would be a unique, unlimited sticker bearing that species to flex your accomplishment. Ideally, this would give your gifts some flare when received by your friend!

I'm sure I can think of more ideas, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys this. I made a few mock-ups of how I envision it could look in the existing UI. How many complete entries do you have? Any other ideas we could imagine that might help drive this?

EDIT - Hey trainers, thanks for the love! I appreciate everyone's feedback and enthusiasm for this. Just want to clarify this concept excludes costume forms, which are conveniently separated in each species Pokedex entry. For unreleased shadow/purified forms, the simplest course would be to simply make completion currently unattainable until we get them (similarly to how we cannot finish the Sinnoh Pokedex currently, since we still have unreleased Pokemon there).

I know the future games may release new forms, but seeing how far it'd be before we see those forms in Go, I feel like this is very doable now, with the caveat that they'd have to be readdressed when that time comes. Just a silly idea for now. Glad everyone seems to enjoy it!

Question Did they drastically decrease the pokemon spawning and only increase them during events? It’s pretty barren.

I usually walk a ~2k feet route. I just walked it twice with an incense (not a daily one), while being on the route. It was totally barren. There was legit only 30-40 Pokémon that spawned. In each grid, there was probably 2 Pokemon that spawned. A year ago, there was 3-4 times that. What happened to the spawning rate? Even with an incense, there was barely anything. I noticed that there was a lot during the Mewtwo event. Do they only increase it for big events now?

I have no idea how long the shiny shaymin catch 492 pokemon will take now with this spawn rate.

Discussion Can we talk about nonstacking bonuses?

Post image
41 Upvotes

I was among the crowd that lamented the loss of spotlight hours. And was elated to see their return. But.....why do we have an Eevee SLH with 2x catch candy when the current Go Pass already has that as a bonus, especially since they don't stack? Am I missing something here? Just feels like poor execution.

Discussion My Pokémon GO account was hacked. Here is how I recovered it within 24 hours

I am sharing my experience because account theft seems to be happening more often, and the official support process is far less clear than it should be.

My Pokémon GO account was compromised earlier this week.

I played for a while that morning. When I opened the app again at lunchtime, I had been logged out. I tried to sign back in through both Google and Facebook, but received this message:

“Unable to sign in. Please check that this Pokémon GO account exists and that you have correctly selected New or Returning Player.”

At first, I assumed it was a temporary error.

I then used Account Recovery and entered my email address, but it said that no Pokémon GO account was connected to it. When I entered my Trainer name instead, the recovery code was sent to a partially hidden email address that I did not recognise.

That was the moment I realised someone had accessed my account and changed its login details.

It is genuinely distressing to be locked out of an account in which you have invested years of time, money and effort, without knowing what the other person might be doing. I had no idea whether they were changing my details, transferring Pokémon, deleting friends, spending coins or attempting to sell the account.

Contacting support was unnecessarily difficult

Finding the correct support form was harder than it should have been. Many support pages directed me towards in game support, which was useless because I could not access the game.

I eventually submitted a compromised account request through the Pokémon GO support website.

I accidentally submitted more than one request because I did not receive a clear confirmation for the first one. One request was then closed as a duplicate, which created even more confusion. I strongly recommend keeping everything within one support request whenever possible.

Campfire may have helped prove that the account was mine

Thankfully, I was still logged into Campfire.

My Campfire profile continued to display the connected Pokémon GO account. I took a screenshot showing that connection and sent it to Niantic as additional evidence.

Seeing the Pokémon GO profile still connected gave me some peace of mind. At the same time, I had no way of knowing what was happening to my Pokémon, items, coins or friends.

If you are locked out of Pokémon GO but still have access to Campfire, do not log out. Take screenshots of your profile and the connected game account immediately.

The support timeline

Support took an average of around six or seven hours to reply to each interaction.

They eventually confirmed that they could restore the account to either my oldest or longest used login method. They showed me a partially hidden email address and asked me to confirm the complete address and whether I wanted to use Google or Facebook.

I replied immediately and selected Google.

The waiting was probably the worst part.

Even after support confirmed that the account could be restored, I kept wondering what might be happening in the meantime. Had the account been sold? Were rare Pokémon being transferred? Was someone changing the login method again?

Fortunately, I regained access around 24 hours after I first reported the account as compromised.

Everything appeared to be exactly as I had left it. My Pokémon, items, coins, friends and account details were all still there. I almost cried from relief.

I believe Pokémon Trainer Club was the point of entry

I cannot prove exactly how the attacker gained access, but I strongly suspect that my Pokémon Trainer Club login was involved.

I could no longer access my Pokémon Trainer Club account either. The password I had previously used no longer worked, and I received no email warning me that the password, email address or linked account details had been changed.

I contacted Pokémon Support separately about the Pokémon Trainer Club account.

I will not link Pokémon Trainer Club to Pokémon GO again unless stronger security protections are introduced. Changes of this importance should require email confirmation or proper two factor authentication.

Important warning from Niantic

After restoring my account, Niantic warned me that this was the only time they would restore access and that future recovery attempts could be denied.

That makes the situation even more serious.

If someone compromises the account again, Niantic may refuse to restore it a second time. After recovery, I immediately changed my passwords, reviewed the devices connected to Google and Facebook, activated two factor authentication and removed login methods I no longer needed.

Information that may help with recovery

Have the following information ready:

• Your exact Trainer name
• Your Niantic ID
• Screenshots of your Campfire profile
• Your Trainer level and team
• Access to the original email address
• Previous login methods
• Old screenshots
• Purchase receipts
• Devices previously used to access the game

Support may not request every detail, but having the evidence ready can save valuable time.

Do not publish this information publicly. Only send it directly to official support.

What Niantic and The Pokémon Company need to improve

There need to be proper security alerts whenever an email address, password or login method is changed.

There should also be a way to temporarily freeze a compromised account while ownership is verified. Victims should not have to spend hours wondering whether their Pokémon are being transferred or their account is being sold.

The recovery process also needs to be easier to find without access to the game.

I was lucky. I recovered my account within approximately 24 hours, and nothing appeared to be missing. Others may not be so fortunate.

Secure every login method connected to your account, activate two factor authentication wherever possible, keep screenshots and receipts, and be cautious about linking Pokémon Trainer Club until its account security improves.

Idea/Suggestion Pokémon GO Center?

So I have been playing since 2016, I live in a smaller town with 5 to 7 pokéstops and 1 gym like a 5 minute drive away. So it is very hard for me to get revives, ever since the 2023 GO Fest Global with Mega Rayquaza 65% of my pokémon have been dead, (I wish I was joking) I have tried to get revived but it is so difficult for a person that is busy. So I would like to introduce my idea, the Pokémon GO Center! It's kinda corny but In the games you could always go heal your pokemon at a Pokémon center, and I think this would be a great addition to pokemon go, as players could spend stardust or poke coins to heal their pokemon and select them like you would transferring and then you pay the stardust to heal them. Look, I know this is messy and it could use some more thought but Scopley, PLEASE add a way for people in small towns to have better experiences with Pokemon go. It could even be like one center per city or like very limited but PLEASE

Analysis [ANALYSIS] Best Pokémon per Type stacked against 135 Legendary and Mega Raid bosses

Post image
182 Upvotes

Hello all,

In my previous post, I simulated thousands of raids to determine the most versatile Pokémon (lvl 40, party power on, no dodging). A suggestion I received was to show the best Pokémon per type and to focus more on solo players, as this is the more prevalent playing style. This is what I will do in this post.

QUESTION: What are the best Pokémon per type and how useful are they against Legendary and Mega Raid bosses?

Scenario

This scenario assumes that you have level 40 Pokémons, have the best moves available, and that you are not part of a "Party", and can therefore not benefit from the Party Power feature.

Ranking

In short, I rank based on damage output & stamina (Breadth). Edit: this skews the results on purpose towards bulkiness as I don't like glass canons.

ANSWER

Per type, you see the best Pokémon and how they rank across all 135 Legendary & Mega raid bosses (each raid boss is represented as a square).

If a square is filled with a blue color, it means, that the shown Pokémon is ranking at least in the top 20 of attackers against that raid boss. The darker the blue, the higher the placement.

Takeaway

  • Not all types are created equal. Grass, Poison, Bug, ... types are only effective against a handful of raid bosses. If you are short on resources, I suggest that you do not focus on Pokémon with those types
  • Unsurprising meta. Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, Necrozma Dawn Wings, Eternatus, Zamazenta Crowned Shield, ... These known heavy hitters lead the rankings in their respective typing and can be used against a large number of raid bosses. Invest in those first!
  • Hidden Gem. Mega Mewtwo Y looks fairly irrelevant if we only judge by the type chart. However, as highlighted in my previous post, Mewtwo Y is the most versatile Pokemon in the game and ranks in the top 20 against 83 of the 135 raid bosses! Followed by Mega Rayquaza and Eternatus with 77 and 69 raid bosses respectively.
Top 3 most versatile Pokémon, measured against 135 Legendary and Mega Raid Bosses

I hope this was somewhat informative and if you have questions, criticism or suggestions, I am happy to hear them!

Discussion spawn points updated/deleted?

some time between 3-4pm EST, a couple of pokemon on the over world "ran" (disappeared in a cloud of smoke) when clicked. No catch screen. Those spawn points seem to no longer generate spawns during the 4-5pm window.

is it just me, or anyone else saw the same? Had similar incidents happened in the past?

Discussion 6pm Ballon

The 6 PM balloons should either last for 1.5 hours or appear after 7 PM on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Right now they overlap with Raid Hour (Wednesday) and Spotlight Hour (Tuesday/Thursday, depending on events), forcing players to choose between Rocket balloons and limited-time events. Balloons are available all day, but the 6 PM one is the only one that consistently conflicts with scheduled event hours.

Extending it to 7:30 PM or moving it to after 7 PM would let players enjoy both without missing out. It seems like a simple quality-of-life improvement that would benefit everyone.

Analysis Meltan Excellent Catch Ratio

Usually I’m not one to sit around trying to catch Meltans with excellent catches. I just quick catch and move on. But, with the 8x XP catch bonus today, I thought I’d try to slow catch and maximize XP and see how many I could catch using an excellent catch. Here’s my catch result.

Meltans caught in an hour - 69
Caught with Excellent Catch - 36 - 52.2%
Caught with Great Catch - 4 - 5.8%

I played on a regular iphone and used great balls to catch as I thought it would be a good balance of meltans staying in with excellents but running if it missed.

I wasn’t sure what percentage excellents I would hit. I was hoping for 25%, but pleasantly surprised that I hit above 50%. In fact, I was at 60% after the first half but my throwing got worse as finger fatigue set in.

PSA PSA: You can get Party Hat Gengar from Incense

I pop an adventure incense, and I eventually came across two separate instances of Party Hat Gengar. I assume that the other party hat mons are also available via incense, and you don't have to raid (aside from knowing and guaranteeing a catch via raiding rather than RNG from incense).

Discussion Premier Ball rates should remain permanently boosted

1.0k Upvotes

Catch rates on raid bosses have been abysmal for a long while and we should advocate for change.

One of the highlights of Gofest and the lead up raid week were the boosts to Premier balls making raid bosses very easy to catch.

The challenge of fighting a raid boss should be defeating it with a group, not catching it. Catching should be a reward, not a second challenge that takes as much time (if not more) than the raid itself. People should not be paying for premium items to challenge a raid boss and not even catch it. It’s incredibly demoralizing.

I’m a fully grown adult who nails excellents and golden razzes on every throw and 2 of the 5 Solgaleo remote raids I participated in fled (17+ premier balls to start). It is incredibly disheartening when I take my nephew out to raid and he’s excited to defeat the boss but can’t catch it. I have to trade it to him and the little guy is low on stardust for how often this happens.

Black and White Kyurem are options to make the catches easier, but with the way the game works, I don’t know when I’ll be invited to a random remote raid. Half the time I cannot activate their adventure effect, then go into the raid screen, use the pass and get into the raid. Everything is so laggy and takes so much time it’s not worth it half the time unless it’s a raid hour and I know that I will be primarily catching raid bosses for a time.

I’m all for buffing raid bosses, adding shields, etc to make the raid bosses harder to take down if there is the ability to guarantee a catch (like raid bosses in the MSG). Catching legendaries in the MSG are always frustratingly long but were given more options. We can bring the Pokémon’s HP low, give it a status effect, and use a buffed ball. In Pokémon Go, our only option is Golden Razz and excellent throw. And we’re limited in the number of Premier balls.

What are your thoughts on this given we’re in a wave of a new legendary shiny raid after so long? Is anyone else having an issue with catching legendaries lately?
