I inherited these from a friend. Two were mounted on a wood base at some point I do believe he was going to get into stone carving before he passed. He did wood carving before. I just wondering if anyone knows what they are. Are they worthwhile. Maybe the value of them. Thanks!

What's a good tool for cutting Stone Slabs?

I recently got into cutting rocks in the last month or so. Right now I'm using an old 7in Tile cutter I got from a friend. I'm sticking to simple projects for now and I've been cutting slabs I bought from gem shows and online into coasters. It's very easy with my tile cutter but slabs can be expensive and I kinda want to cut my own.

Is there something I should buy for this or should I just get a bigger saw? I want to be able to take large chunks of rock cut them into several slices and cut those into 4×4 coasters.

CP009A Rock Drill (Handril) - conversion from round/cp style to spline

Hi all - anyone know if converting a CP9A (Handril) to a CP9F (spline shank) is as simple as just replacing the chuck using Z8369412. It sure looks that way from the schematics, but just wanted to confirm. I plan on purchasing a used CP9A and converting it, if this will work, as opposed to a new CP9F variant.

Thanks for any input.

How cool is this? (Real question)

Hey everyone suggestions on which group to post in warmly appreciated.

,

looking for some insights on this unusual carved stone boulder I picked up at a secondhand junk shop here in Thailand. Possibly just some tourist junk?

Physical Details:

Dimensions & Weight: Roughly 10cm x 8cm}, weighs 833 grams.

Exterior: Unpolished, weathered dark "river pebble"? skin/rind covering most of the stone, with micro-pitting on the bottom side.i haven't tried cleaning it.

The Carving: A "window" has been cut into one side, revealing a smooth relief carving of a Buddha seated on a lotus, surrounded by a polished rim.

Hardness Test: I ran a steel scratch test on it—a steel pin/blade does NOT scratch the stone at all. It leaves a streak of dust that easily wipes clean off.

Translucency: When backlit with a strong flashlight, bright vivid green light glows through the entire body and rind (see backlit photo).

I’m open to all perspectives on this piece!

For the rock & gem folks: Based on the density, translucency, and hardness (>6.0), what natural stone does this feel like to you? (Nephrite, Jadeite, Green Quartzite, Chalcedony?)

For the art & culture folks: What’s your reaction to the style? Does it spark any cool history, lapidary lore, or creative inspiration for anyone?

General vibes: How cool or unusual does this look to you, and have you seen anything quite like it before?

I'd love to hear whatever thoughts, lore, or general impressions it gives off. Photos attached show the front, natural rind, scratch test area, and flashlight backlighting!

Stone carving - tools, choice of stone

Hi, I got a hammer and few viridium chisels, thinking of some interesting smaller scale project....5 to 15cm

What are best stones, situated in Europe, I can get out of nearby query or order some beginner friendly online.

I was thinking of carving Maltezian cross or some rune stones, making a furthark set for example

Anyone willing to help me?

I have also a piece of diamond for sharpening

I have done a lot of other things similar, just not with stone. I’m kind of not happy with it. Wondering if I should try again

I'm very new to stone carving and am learning every time I try something new. I was asked for a plant inspired pendant. Common Green Opal done 100% with a dremel.

I know i want to get more practice at detail. Feedback welcome as I want to continue to absorb knowledge and grow this craft.

Carving a Pixiu out of Hetian jade

My father carved this Pixiu, a traditional Chinese symbol that has been part of Chinese culture for centuries.
In Chinese culture, Pixiu is often associated with protection, good fortune, and prosperity. Beyond its meaning, I love the craftsmanship and patience behind every carving.
I hope this small piece of traditional art brings peace, happiness, and good luck to everyone who sees it.
Wishing everyone peace and all the best.

Abstract form, Sylacauga Marble

I typically only work in Sylacauga Marble since it's so close to where I live, and the stone is beautiful. It cuts like a dream, has a beautiful sugary crystal structure, and gets some interesting inclusions of pyrite, phyllite, greenstone, and graphite.

Bit of a mad one - (UK) Looking for a German Shepherd sized boulder to make a statue from

Mrs is very creative and artistic. Our GSD recently passed - she wants to have a crack at carving a statue of him. Any idea of cost of the stone itself, and what might be best to work with?

Any tips, tricks, tools you'd recommend? Anything you thought "wish I'd known that when I started"? Anyone experienced who can point me in the right direction?

I work in building trade so know my way around dangerous tools and know how to look after our selves, names of bit/blade/tool types etc - don't hesitate to lay it on thick with me!

8 year old birthday present ruined. Can it be salvaged?

Post image

My son was gifted a soapstone dragon carving kit this morning for his birthday, and he was very excited!

Sadly, when he tried to file it, it ended up dropping and shattered and he was devastated. These are the two biggest usable pieces, the rest are too small to use.

He had thrown the pieces away in his sadness, and I dug them back out of the trash in hopes of surprising him with a redesign. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could make with these?

Ps4 controller for scale. The pieces are about an inch thick
