Dev Diary Stellaris Dev Diary #418 - Announcing Nomads and Stellaris: Season 10

Read this post on the Paradox forums! | Dev replies here!

It’s my pleasure to announce boarding has started for all passengers departing on our tour of Stellaris: Season 10, with non-stop service to the Nomads expansion alongside the Stellaris 4.4 ‘Pegasus’ update. Following our first destination, there will be a brief stopover at the Stellaris 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ Custodian release, after which our cruise will continue to the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, featuring WillpowerScenario Pack 1, and Scenario Pack 2. All passengers are welcome to acquire their ‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait at the ticketing office now.

Watch the Season 10 Announcement Trailer on YouTube!

The Stellaris 10-year anniversary is coming, and as part of that celebration, we are rolling Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, the Humanoids Species Pack, and most of the Galaxy Edition upgrade into the base game on May 11th. (The e-book, Infinite Frontiers, is being retired.)

Later on in Q2, we’re bringing you Nomads.

Build no borders. Claim no worlds.

The Galaxy is not a trophy to be seized, but a path to be taken. In Stellaris: Nomads, you will survive the void by staying in motion. While the great powers squabble over lines on the map, your civilization has realized a fundamental truth: life flourishes on the move.

Arkships

At the very heart of every nomadic civilization lies its Arkship: a fully mobile capital that replaces worlds entirely. Customize Military, Scientific, or Civilian Arkships with specialized modules, districts, and upgrades as your Empire evolves by traveling through the stars.

Waylines and Contracts

Chart Waylines across the stars, linking your Waystations into living networks of trade, influence, and opportunity. Your strength lies in motion, in presence, in the relationships you build from system to system. Your relations with settled empires don’t have to be antagonistic. Accept contracts, build relations, and perhaps profit a bit on the side.

A New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

Building upon the Crisis paths of previous releases, Ambitions are the next step of epic, empire-defining journeys that give you the choice of your ultimate role in the galaxy. In the Nomads expansion, we will transform the Defender of the Galaxy Ascension Perk into a full path that can rival the power of a Galactic Nemesis, Awakened Empire, or End Game Crisis.

Become the Galaxy’s champion by forging alliances, commanding federations and rising through the Galactic Community to assume Custodianship. Lead the fight against existential threats with a unique squadron of hero ships. Ultimate power can be used, and relinquished, for the greater good.

Coming to you hot from Champion’s Forge LIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Stellaris: Nomads contains:

Nomadic Empires

Create empires that are not bound by claiming systems or colonizing worlds. Instead, you will navigate the stars with massive Arkships.

  • The Arkship: Your capital, your cradle, and your fortress. This massive, fully upgradable wonder replaces traditional Worlds for your empire. Choose between three different options to fully reflect the vision of your government:
    • Military Class: A mobile flagship designed to project power.
    • Scientific Class: A roaming laboratory dedicated to the discovery of the Galaxy’s secrets.
    • Civilian Class: An industrial hub capable of unparalleled resource extraction.
  • The Wayline Network: Your trail through the void. By constructing Waystations, you create Waylines - lasting interstellar trade routes that harvest resources you can claim with a simple pass through. These routes benefit both you and settled empires, making you the pivot point of mercantile possibilities in the Galaxy.
  • The Contract System: As a nomadic empire, perform task-driven interactions with other empires to earn favor, resources, and influence. As a settled empire, issue these Contracts and get things done!

New Origins

  • Voidfarers: The standard origin for Nomadic Empires. A flexible, streamlined start for you to define your own nomadic journey.
  • Heirs of the Khan: Play as the successor of a murdered Khan, as you evade marauder hit-squads through trickery and bribery until you are strong enough to return to reclaim your throne.
  • The Sacred Path: Guide a fleet of pilgrims towards ancestral holy sites in a galactic pilgrimage. Your journey is a spiritual odyssey fueled by faith.
  • Forever Cruise: Manage a society split between a pampered elite demanding new entertainment and sightseeing opportunities from their vista lounges, and an overworked crew keeping the dream afloat.

Nomadic empires support many existing Origins as well.

New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

While a Galactic Nemesis (available in Stellaris: Nemesis) threatens the Galaxy, the Defender of the Galaxy will rise and try to save it.

New Megastructure: The Stellar Cannon

Why simply power a civilization when you could fire at one? This Megastructure allows you to weaponize your entire energy stockpile, discharging it into a devastating beam capable of striking enemy systems across the galaxy.

Nomadic Enclave: Champion’s Forge Live!

Experience the Galaxy’s most extreme spectacles with this nomadic enclave! Answer the call and participate in gladiatorial fleet combat all across the galaxy. The winner gets to hold the Trophy relic and glory until the next tournament, with the losers looking on with envy.

Wanderlust Ascension Perk

New Renowned Nomadic Paragons

New Civics and Tradition Swaps

New Music Tracks by Andreas Waldetoft

OMG, Blorg legs.

Nomads has charted its course and will arrive in Q2 2026.

Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass

Based on the feedback from Stellaris: Season 09, we’re making some changes to our Expansion Pass plans this year. As many of you have noticed, we’re announcing this year’s Season much later than previous years, and instead of four separate releases, we’re planning on bundling them together into fewer release moments. This frees up room for the 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ update to be a dedicated Custodian release, giving us two in 2026.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is a journey through resilience and movement. Whether you are wandering the stars with Stellaris: Nomads or rooting your empire in the indomitable spirit of Stellaris: Willpower, this year redefines how empires survive, adapt, and conquer.

Stellaris: Season 10 will grant you access to all five DLCs as soon as they become available. Vipra now, Nomads later on in Q2, and Willpower and both Scenario Packs in Q4.

‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait (Instant Unlock, Now Available)

This exclusive portrait comes with Stellaris: Season 10, allowing your empire to take the form of the elusive Vipra, a necroid species with a menacing aura.

Available immediately upon purchasing Stellaris: Season 10, this portrait features 5 different color variations and ethereal custom animations.

Nomads (Releases Q2, 2026 - $24.99)

Build no borders. Claim no worlds. In Nomads, you thrive inside colossal Arkships that carry your people, your industry, and your ambition across the stars. Move freely through the galaxy, take on Contracts from settled empires, and leave your mark by building Waystations. Nomads blaze a path across the map.

  • Nomadic Empires: Create empires not bound by claiming systems or colonizing Worlds.
  • Arkships: New massive space vessel acting as your capital.
  • New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy: Rise and save the Galaxy with an exclusive set of Hero ships.
  • New Origins: Heirs of the Khan, Sacred Path, Forever Cruise, Voidfarers
  • New Civics: Caravan Masters, Deep Sleep, Void Reavers, Flight Schools, Star Seekers
  • New Megastructure: Construct a Stellar Cannon and discharge your entire energy stockpile into a devastating beam.

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Take my energy! ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

Willpower (Releases Q4, 2026 - $24.99)

Shape Minds, Rule the Stars. In the vast expanse of the cosmos, borders are mere lines drawn on a map. Ideas, on the other hand, have no such limits.

Your empire was founded on its Ethics, the convictions that determined its course. Now is the time for those fundamental values to evolve into Ideologies with the power to sway the stars. Introducing Stellaris: Willpower, the expansion that turns your societal beliefs into a galactic force.

Your rule over systems was always just the beginning. The galaxy's minds are the true prize. You will erect monuments and Megastructures that demonstrate what your society and values can accomplish. You truly can become the thought leader of the galaxy.

Adopting an Ideology is not without its risks, however. Left unchecked, it can radicalize colonies and spark insurrection. But when nurtured with care, the right Ideology has the power to sway entire civilizations.

Scenario Pack 1 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Embark on a new set of galactic challenges! Experience curated, high-stakes standalone adventures that push your strategic limits. From a nomadic, roguelike odyssey across the stars to high-octane, combat-focused multiplayer experiences, these scenarios will provide a bold way to play Stellaris.

The Scenarios System will be a free part of the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, these Scenario packs provide our take on what you’ll be able to do with it.

  • Vanguards: A single-player roguelike galaxy-traversing journey where you play as a nomadic empire travelling through a series of galaxies to cleanse evil, gathering spoils and experience on your way.
  • Arcade: A multiplayer experience with streamlined, custom economies, focusing on space battles and shipbuilding.

Scenario Pack 2 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Rewrite the rules of engagement! This Scenario Pack flips the script of how Stellaris is normally played, making you the threat and aggressor. Whether leading an ultimate extra-dimensional invasion or battling your friends in a race for dominance, these scenarios offer a fresh, distilled way to play Stellaris.

  • Unbidden: Play as the Crisis in a single-player experience, and attempt to invade an advanced, late-game galaxy as the Unbidden.
  • King of the Hill: Stellaris gameplay focused on a small but fair map to challenge your friends in competitive experiences as you try to dominate the galaxy in a few hours of intense expansion wars.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is now available for purchase for $49.49 or regional equivalent, a 20% discount over purchasing the contents individually.

What’s Next?

Next week we’ll begin our Decennial celebration with a look at ten years of Stellaris. We’ll also be looking at everything planned for 4.3.6.

See you then!

My main opponent in the GC is a hivemind, but they have a frankly insane amount of dip weight because of this modifier that just reads Skeg, son of Tabu. What?

There's just something special about playing as humans, a feeling of belonging thatI just don't feel with aliens, about creating a future for your own kind, a prosperous one, and of course about proving our INNATE and UNDENIABLE superiority to these filthy xenos. The emperor protects and all that. Anyway, have a great day and remember we are the very best species to ever walk the cosmos.

Tip Syncretic Evolution Nomads is pretty good

Nomads have a hard time producing basic resources, even taxing vassals don't cut it because they don't know how to do economy and go into red causing planarity secessions constantly.

Solution?

Syncretic Evolution with Lithoid Cattle. They get both bonuses from workers like Strong/Exoesqueleton Tech and from slaves like Slave Hubs.

Just let them breed themselves in your ships and enjoy your self replicating mineral pile.

Question As clone army origin, how do conquered planets manage themselves if I cant move my clones over?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, im still new to the game.

Im running the clone army origin, which means im capped on how many clones I can have and they are bound to the worlds that have the ancient clone vats. Ive read that I need to conquer another species pretty early to fix this.

So I conquer a few planets, but I cant move my clones over there since all my ancient clone vats are on my main planet and my 2 colonies. This means the newly conquered planet has to completely govern itself and fill all jobs with its native population.

How?

If I make them Indentured servitude slaves, they wont fill entertainer/enforcer jobs and the planet will run a ammenitiy deficit and have low stability. If I set them to Domestic Servitude, they will be entertainers but nothing else, so i cant use them to make alloys or research. So how am I supposed to do this? Not make them slaves to begin with?

Discussion I really wish Leviathans and Space Fauna was improved

I would genuinely love a Leviathan and space fauna DLC. I want the behaviour of some of these creatures improved and made more realistic.

An interaction I love is woth the thr Stellar Devourer. Did you know that if you fight it and bring its health down to 60%, but then you lose the fight, it will actually relocate itself to your capital system out of spite and start eating your capital's star.

I want more of that. More unique behavour beyond being a singular damage check in a isolated system that it never moves from.

Something I would love to see is that the leviathans actually behaved as their lote implies, such as with both the Shard and Ether Drake in lore, seek out wealth and gold, so why not have them slowly make their way to the system that produces the most energy credits?

Plus, just having more leviathans and I would like to see passive leviathans, or even actual rare ones, like an albino tianki matriarch.

Speaking off, leviathans should respawn. The tiyanki graveyard's story beat is that it's litterally spawning another matriarch, so why not actually have it spawn a second matriarch after 50 - 100 years?

Why are there not at least 4 Void spawn Egg/Planets that hatch at different intervals. Are you saying something as massive as the void spawn only produces one egg of a baby that is likely to get killed?

I genuinely would like for the wildlife of the galaxy to be improved.

I genuinely hope this is a possibility for future dlc, and something the community also would want.

Discussion Wouldn't it be nice to have a status quo ante bellum option in making peace proposals?

Feels like often times, especially in a defensive war, all I really want at a certain point is peace. I might simply throw back the invaders and punish them until they're ready to get out of this thing cheap.

But in the case of many big wars this means I have to spend months going back around cleaning up captured systems before I can offer peace and all the while playing whack-a-mole with xeno fleets.

Is there any good reason this option doesn't exist? Have the devs ever spoken to this possibility and potential gameplay reasons they don't offer it?

Question What is this dragon the xenos have floating in their home system?

Post image
28 Upvotes

This is still the early game and as usual I was looking for a species to enslave to do the manual labor for me. I came across these pacifist lithoid xenos who have absolutely not done any wrong to me or humanity. THEY MUST BE PLOTTING SOMETHING. Therefore in legitimate defense I wanted to obliterate them from orbit, as anyone would in my situation. I was just about to declare a war of liberation from things like democracy and self preservation or critical thinking when I noticed a biggas dragon in their home system named "Hrozgar of the Endless Flames" now will this edgelord dragon defend the xenos from my subjugation ?

Discussion I acquired an arkship as a regular empire

I’m about 20 years in to a new playthrough, as a militarist imperial empire. nothing crazy, pretty basic. a purifier nomadic empire was the first empire i met and was raiding my systems so i declared war.

my fleet defeated its one arkship, and the empire ceased to exist when i ended the war. the empire no longer exists and it gave me the arkship. I thought i read somewhere that regular empires can’t own arkship and planets simultaneously, it’s kind of one or the other.

But I purged all of the pops off the ark, settled my own pops in so i didn’t lose it, and now have a arkship to use. I probably can’t ever upgrade it since i probably can’t get the tech to get it to tier 2, but as a mini mobile colony that can repair ships and be used as a bootleg science ship to survey systems (how i’m using it rn) i can’t complain.

Im just not sure if this is supposed to happen. i play with a lot of mods maybe that corrupted something

Image (modded) The npcs that could not catch a break. I almost feel bad.

  1. So an NPC started as doomsday... Their home planet is gone.

  2. Through miraculous perseverance, they make an arkship.

3 they meet me... another nomad civilization.

  1. I quickly go to war and conquer them, taking their arkshiip.

BUT WAIT... it gets worse. They got conquered by a necrophage species.

  1. I Necrophage purged their pop.

  2. Oh cool their ark ship has a habitability buff on it. (30 happiness 60 habitibility)

  3. I turn their arkship into a living hell for captured pops from all over the galaxy because livestock production is better on their ship.

So....

Should I feel guilty?

Does this planet deserve the "safe Haven" modifier still?

Discussion An interesting hidden bonus to the new enclave.

Fed members have always been against subjects joining unless they also have vassals or the federation is a hegemony. The new nomad enclave helps with this. When an empire sends a fleet off to the "arena" the game makes that fleet a vassal. This means that when that event happens your fed buddies all get their own vassals and are more than happy to vote yes on changing the law.

Question Genuine question, is Nomads worth it currently or is it like the Astral/Storms DLC?

As the title says, is the Nomads DLC worth it? I've been a fan since the game launched and I have loved every dlc, except astral and storm. Nomad gameplay seems cool but I keep seeing mostly negative on steam.

Question Winning?

So, Im trying to learn the game and it's beautiful the depth of it all honestly but my main problem after "winning" the first game is.

Do you only win by score?

Or you guys set up your own goals, because reaching 2500 and seeing a scoreboard and that's it was very anticlimactic.

Advice Wanted How do people play Tall??

Hello, I'm quite new to stellaris and trying out different builds. I've started trying a machine start and trying to play tall as managing a wide empire is quite annoying, I don't hate it, but it's annoying.

I'm just wondering how people play tall in Stellaris? Videos on youtube are outdated and doesn't really show. My empire is now 200+ eventho I'm trying to play tall. Please, any suggestions would be great and what builds yous have in mind.

I come from CK3, and playing tall there is quite different.

Suggestion Nomads and Behemoth Ambition

Given the lore description for the final stages of the behemoth crisis we should have be able to treat the class IV behemoth as an arkship, if not have the option of turning it into a special nomad empire, at least for hive minds. We are litterally puting our conciousness in the behemoth. At minimum this should be an origin with a behemoth arkship and the crisis ambition like the way endbringers works.

Image I won a multiplayer against a virtual empire using cybernetics!!!

Thumbnail

It was a 1v1 game for a small galaxy, they were rogue servitors rushing virtuality. I was driven assimilator with galactic curators. I also went for void dwellers while he went arc welders + astro mining drones.

He also set tech and tradition cost to x0.25 as well (i think he made it easier for him to rush virtuality), but little did he knew i also went all in cybernetics. While cybernetics isnt as strong, they arent limited to a few planets (through for most of the game I stayed on 4-5 habitats), and have some insane pop growth up to 30 new pops per month for assimilators.

I got cruisers year 20 and repeatables year 38. it was a fun game
