Question Has anyone tried remote play with steam?

Upvotes

I'm considering getting a steam machine just for the remote play. I have a high end PC in my office that I use for work that has steam on it and a ton of games. I'm looking to move to a 2nd room for couch gaming on PC and I thought that the steam machine might be a good 2nd option as a PC for remote play.

I've never tried remote streaming with steam. I have top tier wifi, upload and download speeds. Simply just need a decent 2nd PC to try this out. I'm not interested in remote play outside of my house. Simply just want to go to the next room over to my living room to couch game.

I would image the steam machine would be ideal for something like this but I would like opinions from people who have tried it.

Question SSD via USB-C vs internal SSD

Upvotes

I'm getting the 512GB Steam Machine. I have an extra 2TB WD NVME SSD in a USB C compatible enclosure.

Will there be a noticeable difference in speed using the USB-C port compared to just putting it directly inside of the Steam Machine?

I Googled it but I keep getting Steam Deck results.

I wrote steam after seeing my steam machine is bent on the inside. I verified with another owner that this issue was a defect. This was support's honest review in the comments

Hardware Power went out, but I've got ~5 hours of gameplay with this setup

Post image

Got the Jackery Explorer 1000 as a backup for my 3D printers, and to take camping, but it always comes in handy for stuff like this. 24in 1080p 144hz Scepter monitor I got for like $60, whole setup peaks at ~203w, so with 1000wh I'm getting about 5 hours of gameplay. The power draw is the main reason I went official instead of building a DIY, absolutely nothing compares for the form factor and power draw

Question 2TB W/O Controller Canada

Upvotes

I reserved all 4 sku’s on June 18, on the 26th I got the email that I’m on the wait list for only one which is the 2tb without controller but the reason they gave me that one was because I was closest in line for it. Even people on the reservation que right now for this exact model are many of you even getting the purchase email? I wanted to change waitlist but I don’t think that’s a good idea.

Question Frustrating setup, help wanted

Post image
Upvotes

I have a PS5 controller, and a USB cable connect it to the Steam machine. The Steam machine doesn’t recognize the controller, so now I stuck at the very first screen that asks me to connect keyboard/mouse and controller!

I don’t have a wired keyboard or mouse, everything is Bluetooth Apple product.

First time I stuck at the very first step.

How did you guys solve it?

And yes, the controller is in pair mode!!!!!

[[[Solved finally by connecting the Apple Trackpad, Jesus Christ…]]]

Also, that’s finger print on the machine, not dust! The desk can have a bit of cleaning for sure 😆

Meme Finally my turn for the Steam Machine after selling a bunch of items on the Steam Market. Thanks, Valve

Had a lot of lootboxes when I played Counter-Strike 10+ years ago and didn't realize most of them had value so I sold most of it on the Steam Market to pay off this Steam Machine. I still have a few more that I couldn't get rid of in time for games or the Steam Frame.

I guess all those Counter Strike hours eventually somehow paid off lol. Much more palatable than the initial price

Question Freeze on startup

Upvotes

Been using the machine for a bit over a week fine. Today, I wanted to try emulation so I took the sd card that was already setup with emudeck from my steam deck and put it in the machine. Booted into desktop and downloaded installed the emudeck program. Restarted into gaming mode and controller seemed unresponsive. Upon further inspection, the clock does not update, so it is frozen on the SteamOS home page. Unplugging, restarting, does not help. I removed the SD card and rebooted and still no luck. Thinking I might have to factory reset.

I think it's unrelated but the Steam controller had an update the other day. It said to plug it into the USB. When I did, nothing seemed to happen, there was no indication on screen anything was happening so I unplugged and replugged the controller, seems it was still actively updating. I used it fine afterwards with no problem so I don't think it's related to this issue.

Discussion Non-Steam Jump Force not opening

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am currently trying to play Jump Force, a delisted game that I downloaded not on Steam. It told me I couldn’t play the game without dx11 feature 10.0 is required, I’ve tried running it with Proton 9.0 and with other compatibility forcers and nothing has worked. Is there a fix for this?

Software Emulating ps3 (ratchet and clank tools of destruction) on steam machine has been great!

I’m about 8 hours into playing it. 1080p consistent 60 fps with no crashes once I applied patches.

As someone who loves to play an entire series in one place this has been a treat.

Anyone else having fun with ps3 on this yet?

Question Just got the 512gb, whats the best option for expanding storage?

I know it's got a microSD slot, or the USB-C for an external drive.

I don't plan to play large games like cod or anything like that on it. But I got to wondering about the performance of an external drive vs a microSD card when playing games installed to these storage devices. Does it all come down to read/write speed? Does it just effect load times? Or will things stutter mid-play? Cyberpunk 2077 would probably be the fastest-paced game I'll play on it, for a reference point.

Anyone else expanding storage? If so, what route did you go? Cheers!

Question Detecting steam controller with Xbox cloud gaming?

Like the title says I'm trying to run Xbox cloud gaming through the machine the same way you would the Steamdeck.

Launches just fine, however it doesn't detect the Steamcontroller as a controller. I get the generic "connect your controller" error and it continues to act as a mouse and keyboard if I continue into the app (In this case using Doom Eternal to test) without accepting any inputs.

The deck it would just detect the controls and send it without issues.

Any thoughts?

Software Switching Monitors

This might be a dumb question but if I've got two monitors hooked up to the machine, how do I switch which is the primary one for gaming mode?

I've got it working in desktop mode and enabled the correct configuration there, but it isn't carrying over. Is there a simple hotkey or something I've missed?

Software I've had my steam machine for less than a week and I'm getting the breathing blue light.

This morning I attempted to apply a new update to the steam machine. It froze multiple times, but on a recent reset, the machine is just flashing the breathing blue light with the solid white LED indicator. I've checked through multiple posts and they said it could be an issue with the HDMI cable needing to be reconnected.

I've tried this multiple times, and I've even tried a different monitor. On the new monitor, it's still giving me the breathing blue light. However, after attempting to boot to the BIOS screen, I can confirm that I am getting an image.

I'm curious if anyone has gone through this as well. What were your Solutions?

EDIT: I found an imperfect solution which required me completely starting over from scratch when it came to the hard drive and install on the steam machine.

For reference, I'm currently away from my home and do not have a USB keyboard or my normal tools to do a proper diagnosis.

If you're encountering this issue that I posted and have exhausted all other methods, give this one a try.

Turn off the steam machine

Hold down the power button until you see a white flash.

Quickly press the power button again when the LED turns yellow.

This will take you to a menu which will give you options of booting from previous OS. None of them worked for me so I selected the option to erase user data.

Now I'm going through the setup process all over again. At least it works though!

Discussion Steam Machine cooling

Thumbnail amazon.com
1 Upvotes

I was hearing about a few issues with temps going up to 90c on the Steam Machine has me a little concerned about my location. I have mine currently in a TV stand with a door with decent clearance on the sides and the back. I always keep the door open when it's on and still see temps in the 80c range. Thinking about buying a mini PC cooling stand to help but wanted to see what others are doing. Link attached to the stand I was thinking. Thanks!

Hardware 3D Printed Faceplate and Wood Vinyl Wrap

Post image
20 Upvotes

I couldn't wait for Valve to release the CAD files for the Steam Machine, precisely to do this. Since the wood faceplate matched my living room's aesthetic perfectly, I wanted something that would emulate it as closely as possible.

So I decided to 3D print the various parts and then cover them with a wood-effect vinyl wrap.

The wonderful thing is that the geometry is already split into 2 pieces, which lent themselves perfectly to forming a sort of clamp on the wrap and preventing it from peeling off over time.

I made a few small modifications to the geometry of one of the two pieces to make it easier to print and to improve the grip on the wrap.

I stretched the film using a hot hairdryer to make sure there were no creases on the edges, and once it was clamped between the two pieces, I secured it with super glue.

I already had some magnets ready, and voilà.

My girlfriend says it's adorable, and honestly I'm really happy with the result too. Maybe I'll make more of these in the future (seasonal ones, perhaps).

Question Micro SD Card Issue

My micro SD card will only show up after I go to desktop mode, and then back to gaming mode. Happens every time I start the machine back up..

The games are still playable, even with it not visible in storage under the Steam settings.. but it is annoying that if I want to install a game, I have to go to desktop mode, then back to gaming mode just to make it show up…

Anyway to fix this?
