Discussion Should I leave the 2TB waitlist and join the 512G?

I've been in the waitlist for a 2TB (no controller) since July 2nd and while I'd hypothetically be okay with waiting for another month or two, hearing that you may not hear anything until 2027 feels like too much.

Is it better to jump onto the waitlist for a basic 512 or just stay where I am in the hopes I'll get lucky?

Question Price increase during the waitlist?

Hi there. I got on the waitlist for the 512 model with no controller on june 26th. In a very stupid move, I decided to change waitlist to the 512 model with controler, on june 27th at 12:30 am. Wouldn't have done that if I knew the stock would be so short, but my friends and the internet told me I would be the only idiot who'd wat to buy this overpriced box. So like everyone... I wait.

Though I'm eager to put my hands on the Steam Machine, I don't mind waiting. I got stuff to do anyway. However, what I'm afraid of is that the price might increase while I'm waiting, with everything going on. The price is already very high and over the current amount would be too much for me to pay anyway. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Edit: Thanks everyone for the very quick and direct response!

Question How much am I really paying for the compatibility, form factor and quietness?

Like how much will a prebuilt that doesn’t have these features but has similar specs cost you? Or even a laptop? I got it a few days ago and I’m loving how easy it is to play games as a first time pc user, but that’s more the Steam OS, and also as a first time user idk how to research this stuff, and I want to make an informed decision as i have 2 weeks to return it. If it’s like a $100-$200 difference, then honestly I’m fine with it.

Question Frustrating setup, help wanted

Post image
Upvotes

I have a PS5 controller, and a USB cable connect it to the Steam machine. The Steam machine doesn’t recognize the controller, so now I stuck at the very first screen that asks me to connect keyboard/mouse and controller!

I don’t have a wired keyboard or mouse, everything is Bluetooth Apple product.

First time I stuck at the very first step.

How did you guys solve it?

And yes, the controller is in pair mode!!!!!

[[[Solved finally by connecting the Apple Trackpad, Jesus Christ…]]]

Also, that’s finger print on the machine, not dust! The desk can have a bit of cleaning for sure 😆

Question Question as a waitlister

As someone who was waitlisted on the 14th of July, is 3 months a decent amount of time to expect to wait for the purchase email?

I assume around there but I do hope for it to come earlier.

Discussion Got my Steam Machine yesterday. I was hyped… then I discovered Proton

I waited about a month for my Steam Machine, and it finally arrived yesterday.

For context, I’m coming from PlayStation. Before that, I played on PC, but that was around three years ago. PlayStation worked well for me because it was simple: turn it on, choose a game, and play.

The reason I wanted to switch was the more open platform. I realized I’d spent well over €500 on PlayStation subscriptions just to play online, mainly EA FC and the different Battlefield games.

So, while waiting for the machine, I went shopping on Steam and picked up some keys. EA FC, a couple of Battlefield games, Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed, the usual stuff.

The machine arrived, and of course I didn’t have a mouse or keyboard ready. My PS4 controller worked fine at first.

Then I discovered Proton.

No EA FC. No Battlefield. Basically none of the competitive online games I wanted to play.

Okay, fine. I’ll install Far Cry 6 and at least try the machine properly.

That turned into about five hours of learning about SteamOS, Linux, Proton, desktop mode, and the Ubisoft launcher. Installing Ubisoft Connect with only a controller was a massive pain. I had to add the Ubisoft installer to Steam, run it, and then somehow ended up with the installer in my library instead of the actual launcher.

Eventually, I managed to install the game and add it to Steam, but it showed up with “.exe” in the name, no artwork, and no proper game page. Even now, I can only launch it through Ubisoft Connect.

At one point, I switched from gaming mode to desktop mode, then back to gaming mode. When I returned, settings like Bluetooth, audio, and display had suddenly disappeared. I updated everything and troubleshot every problem I could find, but it definitely wasn’t the experience I expected.

A friend described the Steam Machine to me as “a console that can also be a PC, but mainly works like a console.” Coming from PlayStation, where a console means click and play, this didn’t feel like that at all.

I know I’ll figure it out in another day or two, especially once I get a keyboard and mouse. I’m still excited about it, and I’m not giving up on it.

But as a first-day experience? Not great.

Hey Everyone,

So yesterday I began playing Warhammer Darktide on my Steam Machine, IT RAN GREAT!!! Now today im trying to boot it up and im just stuck on this black screen.

Have tried waiting and even switching Proton versions, but no luck. Super frustrating as a consumer and don't understand why this issue is occurring.

Anyone have this experience and know how to fix this?

Question Should i get an XBOX ROG ALLY X20, or the STEAM MACHINE?

i have been on the waitlist for the steam machine for the 512gb with controller since day one and at this point i don't think ill get anything from steam until next year so instead i looked into alternatives and stumbled across the XBOX ROG ALLY X20.

I currently just have a laptop that can barley run anything, light games usually crash and windows drivers are making me insane. I just want something that runs and feels good for once, A GOOD EXPERIENCE so i can be happy i wasted my money on something for once.

Question Delivery question!

I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a steam machine but it’s being delivered tomorrow and I’ll be at work most of the day and it’s supposed to rain all day. For some reason UPS is unable to hold the device at a physical store or change the delivery at all due to restrictions placed on the order by Valve.

Did anyone else have this issue, if so how did you resolve it? Thanks in advance.

Question 2TB W/O Controller Canada

Upvotes

I reserved all 4 sku’s on June 18, on the 26th I got the email that I’m on the wait list for only one which is the 2tb without controller but the reason they gave me that one was because I was closest in line for it. Even people on the reservation que right now for this exact model are many of you even getting the purchase email? I wanted to change waitlist but I don’t think that’s a good idea.

Meme Finally my turn for the Steam Machine after selling a bunch of items on the Steam Market. Thanks, Valve

Had a lot of lootboxes when I played Counter-Strike 10+ years ago and didn't realize most of them had value so I sold most of it on the Steam Market to pay off this Steam Machine. I still have a few more that I couldn't get rid of in time for games or the Steam Frame.

I guess all those Counter Strike hours eventually somehow paid off lol. Much more palatable than the initial price

Hardware A €75 upgrade (Could have been even less) to my 512GB Steam Machine.

Very happy to have a Steam Machine 512GB with controller delivered last week, especially the wife and kid enjoying it thoroughly.

Opted for 512GB because I found the 2TB to be quite pricey set off against the 512GB. Also I already planned to upgrade by taking exchanging the 2x8 GB Dual Channel RAM from my laptop and to take my Steam Decks 2GB and change it back to 512GB.

However, the 2x8GB RAM from the laptop ran at a lower speed than the 16GB from the Steam Machine so that wasn't an option, and keeping the 2GB in the Steam Deck (being a mobile device that goes along everywhere) was more beneficial.

So therefore had a glance at the second hand market and found a good deal on a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD literally around the corner from my place for a mere €90. Placed it, put SteamOS on it and ran great. 1TB is enough, especially because a 1GB fiber can download quickly enough if necessary.

Happy enough I took another glance at the second hand market and found 2x8GB RAM (again Samsung) for a mere €85 for both of them.

A lot of horror stories read about 'opening up the Steam Machine' but my experience was great, a lot easier than working on laptops if you need to go a bit deeper and found the cable management of the Steam Machine great, alongside with flat cables having nice plugs instead of finicky clams you often see. This thing will get a great iFixit score if it's up to me.

Sold the 16GB for a steal at €100 to another Steam Machine user who's going to very happy as well (a bit of sharing is caring), so could have made it even a total cost of €50 or even less, but I'm happy enough with what I've got now. The 512GB is going into an USB-C enclosure as a backup for Steam Machine and Deck.

One thing I was surprised though, both the RAM and SSD I took out of the Steam Machine were from Kingston instead of SK Hynix which I saw was basically the standard, so it really does look like Valve needed to scoure parts.

Confident though that if the buyer of the 16GB RAM module needs to place it in dual channel with a Sk Hynix module it will work, thanks to the experiences posted here in this Sub of others who have done so.

So happy with my 'upgarde', especially at this price point. So for others? Don't forget to look at the second hand market if you're looking for an upgrade.

Question How long to deliver (UK)

I’m sure this has been asked to death and I did scroll but couldn’t find anything for the UK specifically. I bought my SM on Sunday and I’ve had the tracking numbers provided but GLS just says Preadvice and Royal Mail says it’s been notified to expect a package. - how long did it take for everyone in the UK to receive their order?

For those interested some benchmark results from 3Dmark running from windows 11 go via a usb C inclosure

I will note the SM stays surprisingly cool! Even when the GPU is in full throttle I don't think I have seen temps above 75 c yet it is so silent
