Monthly r/SpringfieldMO Meetup: The Fourth Saturday at 5 PM

Look for the sign!

We had a great time at our first set of meetups. We shared a few drinks and proved that local redditors look suspiciously normal in real life.

A lot of folks mentioned missing the first couple. We are making this a regular event so you have more chances to join us. We will meet on the fourth Saturday of every month at Mother's Brewing Company.

Families are welcome! Mother's has a great backyard setup. There is a playground and plenty of room for kids to run around, so feel free to bring the family.

The Logistics

  • When: The fourth Saturday of the month at 5:00 PM.
  • Where: Mother's Brewing Company (215 S Grant). Look for us in the Back Yard.
  • Weather Plan: If it rains, we will move inside to the main taproom.

What to Expect This is casual and low-pressure. There is no agenda. Drop in, grab a drink, and meet some neighbors. You can stay for ten minutes or hang out all evening.

House Rules

  • Be respectful.
  • Sharing your Reddit username is completely optional.

Comment below if you plan to stop by so we can get a rough headcount.

Living Here PSA: No excuse absentee voting has begun. Please Go Vote!

Post image
90 Upvotes

The upcoming Aug. 4 election is kind of an important one and "No excuse, in-person absentee voting" began Tuesday, July 21st. See the image for (an opinionated view of) why this election carries so much weight.

There are two voting locations in Greene County:

Greene County Elections Center
1126 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802
Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Also Saturday, August 1, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

The Library Center
4653 S. Campbell Ave., Springfield, MO 65810
Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Also Saturday, August 1, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

The no-excuse period runs July 21 through Monday, August 3 at 5:00 p.m. You do not need to give a reason or apply beforehand; just go in person. Bring an acceptable, non-expired photo ID. Unlike Election Day voting, in-person absentee voters who lack acceptable ID cannot cast a provisional ballot.

Please, go vote.

Posting here while waiting for approval from the Nixa thread. This is Parker. A 2 year med sized Blue Healer, 45 lbs, blue collar. She's never run away before, but this time could not resist pursuing a rabbit out of the yard. She disappeared Sunday afternoon from the Nixa Mercy Clinic Pediatrics area.

She is a beloved family pet that is skittish of most people. She will probably not let anyone she doesn't know approach. If seen please call.

Looking For Searching for friends

36f looking to make friends.

Just ended a 22 year relationship with a POS who cheated on me and left to go live with the other woman.

I don't have any friends or hobbies because I was isolated. I really don't even know what my interests are because I wasn't really able to do anything but work and take care of my kids.

The other moms I've tried to make friends with over the years were pretty shallow and fake so those didn't last.

Not looking for a relationship of any sort, strictly platonic. I'm open to ideas. I just have no idea how to make friends now.

I have 2 jobs M-F so I'm really only available on weekends. I work from home so no coworker friends either.

Living Here Who knows the true story about Picallos in Nixa.

They announced they were closing the dining room to focus on take out and delivery. The owner said dine in wasn't up to his standards.

Does anyone know the true story. I heard a rumor that the owner was banging waitresses. Although that was something I overheard at the Casey's near Picallos.

Any tea would be welcome, I am thirsty.

Picture On this Day in 1865

OnThisDay in 1865, a legendary shootout between Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt took place in Springfield, Missouri.

Born in 1837, James B. Hickok earned a reputation as a dangerous gunslinger, resulting in the nickname “Wild Bill.” During the Civil War, he served as a scout for the Union.

Wild Bill Hickok was staying in Springfield in the months following the Civil War, and his frequent gambling led to the famed shootout. Davis Tutt, a former Confederate soldier from Arkansas, was a gambler who also resided in Springfield at the war’s end. Tensions between the two boiled over regarding a debt. Tutt claimed that Hickok owed him $35. Hickok claimed it was $25. To cover the difference, Tutt took Hickok’s watch as collateral, an insult that Wild Bill would not let go unanswered. He threatened violence if Tutt continued wearing the stolen watch. Tutt refused to return the watch, leading to the dramatic public showdown.

The shootout itself became the template for the classic Wild West quick-draw duel. Hickok and Tutt stood in the town square, and both men drew and fired their revolvers nearly at once. Tutt’s shot missed. Wild Bill’s did not. He struck Tutt in the chest, and the gambler died at the scene.

Hickok was arrested days after the shootout and stood trial for manslaughter on August 3rd. There was no question as to how Davis Tutt died. The question was whether the shooting was premeditated or if Hickok was reasonably defending himself. After quick deliberations, the jury ruled that Wild Bill was not guilty. The idea that a stolen watch could serve as a justification for homicide fit well in the growing legend of the Wild West.

The story of the shootout spread across the country in an 1867 edition of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, which turned the gunslinger into a celebrity. In the years following the shootout, Wild Bill served as a marshal in Kansas, got into more shootouts, and, of course, continued to gamble.

In 1876, the Wild West legend met his end at a poker table in the Dakota Territory when another disgruntled gambler, Jack McCall, shot him in the head. The hand Hickok was said to be holding at the time, black aces and eights with a mystery fifth card, is now known as the dead man’s hand.

Visiting Local Band Search: Anyone heard of A Perfect Fifth (5th?) from 2006-10 era?

I came across an album of theirs on an old gen 3 iPod and I'm unable to download the music off the device. I'm trying to find any trace of this band from the Springfield, Missouri area around the late 2000s. They played local shows and were a folk/indie-type band as far as I know.

One song of theirs was called, "The Glamor Dies" with these lyrics:

And all my worries wash away
Once everybody knows my name (knows my name)
Suddenly you realize
Everyone has.....
The glamor dies...

That is the best I could come up with from the track on the iPod. They were a 5-piece, I believe, with a few friends that got together and made some music.

Maybe someone has heard of them and may know a little more? Any help finding anything about them, or finding the album this track is from, would be amazing.

I did find an email for a band member, but I sent that email a year and half ago. It was a Yahoo email and they probably will never login to it again.

Travel Airport park n fly

Do any Springfield hotels offer a park n ride? I used to do that in both Kansas City and Omaha.
As long as you stay overnight you can take a shuttle (or uber) to the airport and park in the hotel lot for free.

Living Here Thinking Of Moving Here From TX

Hello, everyone!

I am currently living in North East, Texas (near Dallas). I had a terrible, awful last couple of years resulting in a less than ideal living situation that I am desperate to get out of. I want to buy a house, as I have a large, not very friendly dog that I want to have a decent yard.

I’d like to get out of Texas but can’t afford the places I’d like to live, so I’m trying to find a happy medium. I want better weather (even just slightly better, I’ll take anything); hikes nearby; decent amount of things to do & places to go; decent selection of cafes & restaurants.

I am leftist & atheist, so I know that state politics are bad. However, I live in Texas under Abbott, so wouldn’t really be any different, lol. I’d also really like to establish myself & participate in the community. I’m also not looking to be extremely far from TX (I’d like to be able to visit my best friends occasionally), which will be factored into my decision.

Would y’all say Springfield is a good choice? Especially interested in opinions from any Texas transplants. Is there enough of a left leaning population that I could realistically expect to meet people? I wouldn’t jump immediately into the dating pool, but I would like for that to be an option in the future. Housing prices look decent online (WAY better than my area)—my goal is to have 35k saved before next summer. I’d like to move before June 2027.

I work from home & will move with my job. I’m turning 30 next month, if that makes any difference with the demographic.

I have some time before I need to officially decide, but I’d like to start the process 3/4 months before I move next year & I have OCD & a am strict planner, lol.

Thank you!

Looking For Looking for job

Alright, so I have my Class-A CDL and I’m currently using it. However, I’m expecting a baby soon and I’m trying to find a new job that offers flexible hours. The problem is that whenever I search for jobs online, I only see driving jobs. Now, the issue with that is I have a lot of speeding tickets that I don’t even know why my current employer hired me. Haha. Anyway, I’m struggling to find jobs outside of trucking companies because that’s the only type of job that shows up for me. Does anyone have suggestions?

To clarify, I am not seeking employment as a driver due to multiple traffic violations. Consequently, I am unlikely to be hired.

Recommendations What Springfield revitalization programs apply to two adjacent teardown lots in south Springfield?

I’m from out of town helping my mom deal with two properties she owns side by side in south Springfield. She lives in one, rents the other. Both houses are in rough shape and sit on 0.7 acres combined.

I’ve read that the city is pushing revitalization in parts of south Springfield but I have no idea whether any of it touches where these lots actually touch.

I suppose what I need to know is who to talk to and what questions to ask.

Living Here Church recommendations vol. 100

I am sure that question has been asked a
Million times, but times change so... Currently searching for a church I’d want to make my home. I am in my early 30s, living by myself - so a community that has my demographic would be nice.

Some places I have visited or planning to visit
Visited
1. Northside Christian Church
2. Hill City Church
Planning to:
3. Schweitzer Church
4. North Point Church
5. Hope Church

What are your thoughts on these congregations? Pros, cons, stay aways? Any other places that you recommend that kinda correspond to what I am looking for?
On a side note, would really like to get into table top games again; would appreciate any recommendations.

Obviously they are excluding Farmers Park. I know the relationship between them is contentious. Wondering if Farmers Park allows resale of food?

Things To Do Archers Concert on October 7th, Need to sell my tickets

Yo. I need to sell my tickets to the Archers concert on October 7th in Springfield, MO. It's at the Venue on Sunset; the show starts at 7 p.m.

I'm unable to sell them through the ticket issuer. So we would have to work something out through Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App.

Recommendations Friendly and non-judgmental dentist recommendations!

I have pretty severe dental anxiety which has kept me from going to the dentist for several years. I really need to establish care somewhere as this has caused me to develop some dental issues from lack of professional dental cleanings. Now that I am having real dental issues, it makes it even more intimidating for me to schedule. I would love any recommendations from you if you have a dentist that you know is understanding with patients like me! I am looking for a dentist that I know will be friendly and help me conquer my fear so I can get back into having regular dental cleanings done. TIA :)

Visiting Why is downtown Springfield such a vibe?

For a largely conservative city, is the downtown liberalism college driven? The artistic atmosphere and contemporary feel are refreshing and eye-opening. Murals and public art, people's sense of taste/fashion, a touch of uniqueness to every street and even restaurants, gives the area a distinct character.

Outside of the downtown, Springfield is pretty much what I expected.
The northern and western parts are relatively desolate, while the southwest corner is defined by suburban wealth, sprawling infrastructure, and an endless landscape of strip malls/churches.
