Lost my stinky rat suddenly today to a heart attack

I adopted this girl in 2023 after I moved to Chicago for school. Adopted her from a family who said she didn’t get along with her other cats, but had no other health information. When I went to get her spayed I was told she had a very serious heart murmur. I got a second opinion who told me it was a slight murmur, and the vet who spayed her in 2024 said she sounded fine. Had some tests done and was told that HCM and heart disease was very unlikely. Last summer I had a yearly checkup and the vet said her breathing and heart sounded fine.

Today I arrived home from the dentist when my beloved kitty walked into the room I was eating my breakfast in, plopped down and started convulsing and peeing everywhere. I rushed her to the emergency vet, where I found she had a very enlarged heart as a result of HCM and suffered a heart attack. I didn’t notice any symptoms. She was full of energy running around the house just yesterday playing with me.

Absolutely devastated. She was the most annoying, needy cat I’ve ever met but she was loved by everyone who met her.

This just appeared today. It's a half cantimeter, firm bump. It can slide and move (not fixed). She's still happy and playful, good energy levels. Do you have any idea what this might be? (She is not neutered, 6 month female. She has a 3 yr neutered big sister)

Ongoing CHF - what to expect, still no prescription for Pimobendan, and dry skin (is coconut oil safe for him)?

My 5yr old male’s HCM has progressed rapidly. He was diagnosed over 1.5 years ago. Two months ago he was diagnosed with CHF at his cardiology checkup even though his breaths per minute was 23. He was put on furosemide and sprinonolactone twice a day, fortekor, and his clopidogrel was changed to daily. He’s also on hills z/d kibble which is low in sodium.

At his checkup last week I told the I could still still see his jugular and heart beating which was the only sign of him entering CHF last time. It took a week to get his xray results and found out today he is back in CHF. Only change to meds is to add a midday dose of furosemide. I can tell in the past two days he is not himself. He’s eating well and still jumping but he has slowed down.

I have questions for you guys…

  1. I want to say goodbye before he has a full crisis, but I don’t know what to expect. How will I know? I’d rather he pass peacefully too early than horribly too late.
  2. Why isn’t the cardiologist prescribing Pimobendan?
  3. From all the diuretics he is on, his skin feels really dry and I can see him twitching his skin. He’s never needed moisturizer before. Is rubbing coconut oil on the skin on his back safe for cats with CHF?

Thank you. HCM really sucks.

Hugs to everyone reading this.u

Tips to keep escape artists in the house ?

Anytime a door opens or even hearing someone getting ready to leave she gets ready to make her escape.

Thankfully she's nervous and immediately panics not leaving the area of the doors. Yet.

I sense braver adventures are coming.

She is a completely spoiled indoor cat who would not survive outside.

How do I keep her from escaping ? Or try to make it less alluring.

Which insurance? (Germany only)

Please only respond if you're from Germany.

My sphynx is 6 years old and the only chronic illness he has is issues with his gastrointestinal tract, like every other sphynx has. I have it almost under control with the correct vet-recommended medical food, and daily medicine to help him digest and absorb the food properly.

Now I'm looking for insurance just to be safe, in case it should come to any surgeries, especially with their teeth because they are prone to getting FORL, which needs expensive tooth extractions. Since I'm a student who lives alone (I had my cat already when I was still living with my parents), my budget for the month is always very tight, I struggle all the time with monthly bills. I can barely go out with friends and spend some money on take out food because my most expenses are on my cat and my hamster (hamster isn't much, just the food sometimes).

Do you know a cheap, yet good insurance that covers most things? Most important for me is that they at least cover 3-GOT.

Important: I already tried HanseMerkur, but they only take in my cat WITHOUT tooth insurance inclusive because he's over 5 years old. But I need it with.

Most other insurances don't cover expenses with chronic illnesses that are known of which is frustrating. Lassie is one of them.
