Lost my stinky rat suddenly today to a heart attack

I adopted this girl in 2023 after I moved to Chicago for school. Adopted her from a family who said she didn’t get along with her other cats, but had no other health information. When I went to get her spayed I was told she had a very serious heart murmur. I got a second opinion who told me it was a slight murmur, and the vet who spayed her in 2024 said she sounded fine. Had some tests done and was told that HCM and heart disease was very unlikely. Last summer I had a yearly checkup and the vet said her breathing and heart sounded fine.

Today I arrived home from the dentist when my beloved kitty walked into the room I was eating my breakfast in, plopped down and started convulsing and peeing everywhere. I rushed her to the emergency vet, where I found she had a very enlarged heart as a result of HCM and suffered a heart attack. I didn’t notice any symptoms. She was full of energy running around the house just yesterday playing with me.

Absolutely devastated. She was the most annoying, needy cat I’ve ever met but she was loved by everyone who met her.

NAKEDNESS NOT ALLOWED

Post image

Everyone meet Norman Bates. Despite being quite literally naked himself, Norman chooses not to tolerate nakedness in humans.

Me getting out of the shower? ATTACK

Visiting relatives getting dressed? ATTACK

Boyfriend sleeps over? ATTACK

Seeing someone naked in his home lights a fire within him more than any catnip. If you’re naked and vulnerable, Norman is prowling for attack. 😂 I have absolutely no idea what caused this amusingly bizarre and quite honestly hypocritical quirk of his.

To everyone who owns one of these hairless gremlins, tell me some of their most bizarre/funniest quirks or behaviors!

What is this bump?

This just appeared today. It's a half cantimeter, firm bump. It can slide and move (not fixed). She's still happy and playful, good energy levels. Do you have any idea what this might be? (She is not neutered, 6 month female. She has a 3 yr neutered big sister)

Does anyone else’s baby insist on sleeping with their head on the pillow?

As you can see, Miss Maude loves to claw at our bedding. We were lucky to adopt her at 2yo and whenever she takes a nap in our bed, she claws her way under the covers and rests her head on the pillow. Maybe something she learned at her last home. And when we go to bed at night, we let her under the blanket and she comes up to lay the same way with her back against one of us.

Tips to keep escape artists in the house ?

Anytime a door opens or even hearing someone getting ready to leave she gets ready to make her escape.

Thankfully she's nervous and immediately panics not leaving the area of the doors. Yet.

I sense braver adventures are coming.

She is a completely spoiled indoor cat who would not survive outside.

How do I keep her from escaping ? Or try to make it less alluring.

Ongoing CHF - what to expect, still no prescription for Pimobendan, and dry skin (is coconut oil safe for him)?

Post image

My 5yr old male’s HCM has progressed rapidly. He was diagnosed over 1.5 years ago. Two months ago he was diagnosed with CHF at his cardiology checkup even though his breaths per minute was 23. He was put on furosemide and sprinonolactone twice a day, fortekor, and his clopidogrel was changed to daily. He’s also on hills z/d kibble which is low in sodium.

At his checkup last week I told the I could still still see his jugular and heart beating which was the only sign of him entering CHF last time. It took a week to get his xray results and found out today he is back in CHF. Only change to meds is to add a midday dose of furosemide. I can tell in the past two days he is not himself. He’s eating well and still jumping but he has slowed down.

I have questions for you guys…

  1. I want to say goodbye before he has a full crisis, but I don’t know what to expect. How will I know? I’d rather he pass peacefully too early than horribly too late.
  2. Why isn’t the cardiologist prescribing Pimobendan?
  3. From all the diuretics he is on, his skin feels really dry and I can see him twitching his skin. He’s never needed moisturizer before. Is rubbing coconut oil on the skin on his back safe for cats with CHF?

Thank you. HCM really sucks.

Hugs to everyone reading this.u

Introduction seems impossible

Help! We got a new sphinx baby and he is PERFECT. We’re trying to get him introduced to the dogs though and it has not gone so well. Our smaller dog is TERRIFIED of him but our bigger dog is growling. I’ve sat him in his carrier and sat him on the couch with them and our bigger dog is fine with that but whenever we try to lose the carrier the hissing starts and then the dogs growling. This has been a nightmare so far, luckily we have an extra bedroom and have been able to isolate along with alternating the dogs outside so he gets plenty of free roam time

Cypress update!

It’s been one week since he was diagnosed with FIP and started GS-441524. Last week was a rollercoaster from hell on if he’d even make it out of that week alive.

He’s on crate rest and strict precautions due to very low platelets from immune mediated ITP that decided to join the party. On Friday he sees internal medicine to recheck all his labwork. We want to see his red blood cells and platelets rising, and his bilirubin dropping. Those are the goals.

Everyday he gets better. Thank you everyone for the love and support for him, we appreciate you all so much.

I’ll update Friday after his appointment. Keep sending him love, he’s not out of the woods yet but each day brings more hope.

HELP! One of my hairs is sticking out of my Sphynx cat’s bum!

Do I just wait for him to pass it? I have very long hair and a cat that is obsessed with me and sometimes grooms me while I’m sleeping. He’s precious, but now I see one of my own hairs sticking out of his butthole! AH!

If it was a thread, I know emergency vet is the way to go since that could contract and slice up his insides- but what do I do about human hair?? I’m an islander so it’s not like soft soft, like I’ve got a bit of texture and thickness, but uhhh…do I pull it out? Do I wait for him to poop? Do I go to the emergency vet?!?!

Help
