Probably the largest, and most vibrant colored I have seen in my area(Atlanta, GA). Relocated her to a section of garden I won’t be messing with for awhile.

General Question / Discussion Has anyone seen this type of mucus from a snake?

Post image

It came out of my 1 year old male hognose today. I have a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow, but I've been looking through different pictures of regurgitation/mucus etc and haven't found anything that looked quite like this before. I don't want to make this post too long but to put it shortly he had some symptoms that could potentially indicate very early RI but also could indicate just him having some aspen stuck in his mouth (no very obvious things like wheezing, foaming at the mouth etc), he ate last sunday, he shed last tuesday, his husbandry is pretty much spot on, but I have stressed him out a bit last week and yesterday.

I don't want a specialist diagnosis here, just what are the possibilities so that I know what can I expect tomorrow visit since I am a bit stressed. I think this is just regurgitation but idk, can it be something else?

Finally put my idea into action and here’s how it turned out. My Semi-Arboreal snakes seem to love it!

Wanted to share for inspiration or any ideas on improving it or adding to?

Pet Snake Questions Snake species recommendations ?

I’m looking for recommendations on what snake species I should get as my first snake.
A little about me:
I’ve kept bearded dragons and tortoises before, but I’ve never owned a snake.
I have space for an enclosure up to about 7 ft × 4 ft (that’s my absolute maximum).
I’m looking for a snake that’s handleable, calm, and generally chill.
I’d like something with a decent amount of size—not tiny, but nothing giant. Around 4–8 feet would probably be my ideal range.
I’m looking for a species that’s a good display animal but also enjoys being handled when socialized.
I’m comfortable learning proper husbandry and don’t mind feeding frozen/thawed rodents.
What species would you recommend, and why? Are there any species you think I should avoid as a first-time snake keeper?e

Pet Snake Questions Cal King smells different

This week when I've handled my Cal King (4-5 mo old, gender unknown), it's had a very different smell. I think it's like sulfur. The water also smelled today, so I fully changed it out with a new container. The rocks and Aspen bedding don't smell, and neither does the bottom of the plastic enclosure where it comes in contact with the heating pad. There's a layer of cloth between the pad and the bottom of the tank (on the outside of the tank). I checked the substrate - there's no poop or stinky liquid. She shed a few days ago, but the shed skin did not stink.

ideas? I was planning to feed later today, but now I wonder if I should wait.

Pet Snake Questions automatic locks for a snake tank?

hi everyone, i’m ordering a new tank for my snake. my current one is a thrive tank, which has an automatic locking mechanic that i really like, and i loop something through the door as well for extra peace of mind. unfortunately the tank i’m ordering doesn’t have that (it has sliding doors, which seems to be the case for almost all 4x2x2 tanks) and doesn’t come with a lock itself, so i’ll need to buy one.

has anyone here ever been able to find an automatic lock for a sliding glass door tank? is that even a thing that’s possible? if not, what do you recommend?

thanks a bunch :]

Wanted to come on here and share this video I made. I got this snake a while back and this video is fairly old, we had someone come into the reptile shop i worked at to surrender a snake he couldn’t care for anymore, upon asking questions we realized he hadn’t even been taking proper care to begin with and it came in with stuck shed.
Im in college right now hoping to become a veterinarian in the future so i took this as a learning opportunity, obviously none of my snakes ever get stuck shed so this was the first time i had to do something like this. Before anyone says anything i conducted proper research and consulted multiple vets i’ve worked closely with.

Pet Snake Questions What size prey?

Post image

I just got this beautiful mosaic California kingsnake last weekend, I named her Mishka! I am still somewhat new to snakes and was wondering what size mice I should feed her? I was thinking maybe a hopper every 10ish days? I also don’t know how old she is, it wasn’t written on her container and I forgot to ask the breeder. Thanks!

I can't stop smiling! Timber rattlesnakes are one of my favourite finds. Despite their poor reputations (due to having evolved one of nature's most fascinating defenses), they really don't want anything to do with humans, and aren't a threat if you are cautious and stay away.

All three were minimally bothered - just moved off the roads and to safety in the woods.

Pet Snake Questions Needing some help with my Ball Python

Hey guys, this is my very first post in this subreddit or just in general but I need some help/advice. I got my baby around a week ago and she’s my first ever snake. Shes 6 months old (I’m pretty sure) but she is always on her cool side of her terrarium and very rarely goes to her warm/hot side. Yesterday when I took her out to handle/hold her she was VERY cold to the touch and it kinda scared me so I warmed her up with my hands and took out her cool hide so she can go warm up on her warm side (don’t worry I put her cool hide back in after she was in her warm hide) but I’m not 110% sure if it’s because her warm/hot side is way too hot for her or not. I’m running a heating pad connected to a thermostat and a lamp with a 75W bulb, I keep her heating pad at around 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit. Another issue I keep running into is I can’t keep her humidity levels high enough for her even though I spray her terrarium quite a bit and I put some wet moss in there with her and it’s really starting to worry me.
