I’ve been taking singing lessons for a few years and recently started singing live with a cover band. I often dislike my vocal tone, even though other people are positive about it. Is this something singers get used to, or does it usually mean there’s actually something wrong with my tone? Honest feedback is welcome.

For context I am a male singer, not super experienced with a range from about F#2-C5 (I think, and I’m not very strong in those far ends of the range). I’m usually singing around the C#3-B3 range in my recorded songs, but now that I’m rehearsing them live I’m struggling to project my voice when singing anything below an F#3 for some reason. I’m competing with a whole band so I can’t sing as softly as I do on recordings, but to me my voice just sounds goofy when I try to project those notes below the F#3. The timbre of my voice is kinda low, and it’s not that I’m uncomfortable singing those lower notes, I just can’t project them in a way that sounds pleasing to me. My band insists that I project my voice instead of turning the volume of my mic up. I’ve had a few lessons, and I plan on taking more in the near future, but in the mean time I thought I’d pop in this sub and ask for some advice. Thanks!

I just started singing (female), and my natural speaking voice is chest voice. Therefore my chest voice is naturally stronger and sounds better. I have been avoiding pretty much all songs that need me to go into head voice, since it always sounds very weak and I have to sing very quietly to make it sound even okay. 😂

And even with „higher“ notes, I try to squeeze it into my chest voice, making my throat hurt (my natural voice crack happens very quickly when I go just a bit higher). Rn my vocal coach is on vacation.

So I thought: can I do damage when I go into head voice alone? I figured why don‘t I just sing in my head voice everyday, even if it sounds shitty? Will it help me build a foundation?

my room isn't very sound-proofed or anything, im not sure what goes into decisions for microphones so if there's anything i need to specify please let me know!

I have been a singer my whole life. I was a professional performer in high school and college before I met the love of my life and decided to settle down and have a family with him.

A little over a year ago, I decided to embark on a casual journey of just singing and posting every day to the clock app. My following has grown quite a bit, but I’ve always been discouraged by how some people seem to just automatically get a crazy amount of followers and likes.

Not soon into my journey did I find out… EVERYONE USES PITCH CORRECTION ON THAT APP (and also vocal effects)!!! If someone has a large following, they use pitch correction. I was actually shocked to see how many people touting “live” or “candid” performances use pitch correction before posting. The average person isn’t able to identify that because they don’t know what a great singer sounds like naturally. It is retraining our ears to have a stricter threshold for what we consider to be “great singing.” And that is so detrimental, in my opinion.

Anyway, I’ve made a promise to myself to never want likes so badly that I will alter my live, raw voice for more likes and follows. I am just personally against it.

I can sing in front of my friends and quite bluntly like to because I think I have a nice voice. But I won’t unless we are at karaoke or sharing projects. But when it comes to my parents I just cannot do it, I wait until they aren’t home to sing. They have heard videos and always tell me I sound so good and I just cringe out ughh. Like it’s embarrassing idk why, I share all my other creative hobbies with them.

I don’t know why I’m just so much more comfortable when I’m growling instead of singing like a normal person. I don’t want to let go of this part of me, but I very much want to incorporate it into something that has actual melody, so I’ve been working on that.

I think I still have work to do, but I’m really pleased with how a lot of this sounds. I’ve been trying to lean into thinking about creativity in terms of what I would do if I was alone in the universe with nothing but a guitar, and what I’d want to make if nothing mattered but using it to stay sane.

This was the result of that. I just want to take it and make it as good as it can be.

I know I'm not a good singer, im not trying to go pro, but i sing in the shower and car a lot. My friends i went out with are all like theatre musical people who are like professionally trained, and they ended up roasting the hell out of my karaoke. They said I'm actually so tone deaf it hurt. Again, I know I'm not good by any means, but like I for real did not think I was THAT tone deaf. I was like "lol I know I'm not great but I didn't go to school for that shit" and they were like "no like you don't understand, you sounded so awful it was almost unbelievable, like we're you trying to sound as bad as possible?" I was honestly low key shocked. Normally, my singing is not something I am very self-conscious about, but I was like oh wow damn, im sorry, I did not think I was actually that bad. Long story short, am I actually tone deaf? Or were they being like hard on me bc I'm just not trained or something? I only sing for fun, so like if I am awful, I won't be offended, more jsut surprised i thought I was not as bad as I actually am. Pls be honest.

I was just scheduled a root canal for tomorrow at 8 am THURSDAY, and I cantor a funeral Friday 10 am, 1 PM, and then other masses Saturday 11 am and 1:30.... should I reschedule my appt? Or should I be fine to sing the next day? I remember having like 3 root canals in high school at the same time and being miserable, is this going to be okay? It's a tooth on the bottom of my mouth close to the front... Thanks y'all

I see a bunch of people on TT singing with their friends using bandlab and they sound amazing, I get so jealous cuz honestly if love to have a group like that but all the singing groups I've been to, either have;

Are tone deaf (and trust me, I'm the last person to ever get on anyone regarding their singing, I love music. But I truly mean like deadass singing the melody of twinkle twinkle lil star to Olivia Rodrigos Driver license, and not hearing that the two are completely different)

Know nothing about singing just likes how it sounds when all put together (WHICH IS KINDA SOMETIMES OKAY! Unless it falls onto my last point.)

Accents are obviously so okay! And not everyone in the group has to sing everything. Obviously you have to sing sometimes bc if it's 1 song outta the 20 we did in the space of 2 or 3 months then, you're just taking up space and will be removed, simple as that.

obviously im not an opera singer or a coloratura soprano, but regardless, i love singing this song and gradually improving!

Not actually sad but the song itself is very heavy lol. Feel free to critique but I've been singing for a while and I can count on one hand the amount of times I've sang in front of a crowd. Just thought I'd put myself out there a bit and hopefully gain a bit of courage doing so. 🤠

I’d like to preface this by saying that I almost never use Reddit, so if I put the wrong flair I apologize.

I’m a soprano and have been taking singing lessons for about a year now, but recently I’ve noticed that my higher notes sound very airy, and that I’m having a harder time finding a nasally resonance. I plan to speak with my teacher about this soon, but I came here to see if anyone else has had this problem, and what worked for them to fix it. (It’s also worth noting that I am sixteen so my voice obviously isn’t done developing yet.)
