Seeking Advice Quit 85k job for 50k County Job did I make the right decision?
I worked for a major corporation making construction equipment as a union production worker pension and benefits included. I was extremely stressed to hit quotas and got goals and would work 2nd and 3rd and working 12 hour days and would have to commute 2 hours a day. Recently I applied and got hired in my town for a maintenance position at a local sheriffs department making 50k with pension and benefits and union. Itās first shift 8-4pm and I donāt commute 2 hours a day. I would have the same shift as my wife and be closer to home. My house is paid off and I have no debt. Itās just scary since I was at this job 8 going on 9 years and taking a leap. Iām 32 by the way.

Seeking Advice I Finally Found Peace
I finally found my way to live with peace of mind.
I built a simple wooden cabin surrounded by nature. I use sunlight during the day, grow my own vegetables, and take care of a few animalsāgoats, chickens, rabbits, cats, and dogs.
Far away from people and the noise, I no longer chase what doesn't matter. I don't follow the news or the constant drama. Hardly anyone knows where I am, and that's exactly how I like it.
For the first time in a long time, I feel truly at peace.

Discussion Prompt I noticed I apologize for not having exciting plans
Something funny happened last week. A coworker asked what I was doing over the weekend and I said ānothing much, just staying home.ā Then I immediately started explaining myself. I told her I was tired from work, that I had cleaning to do, that I wasnāt feeling very social. Later I thought⦠why did I need a whole explanation? Staying home is actually something I enjoy. I like making food, watching a movie, organizing my apartment and having a quiet day. Somewhere along the way I started feeling like relaxing wasnāt a good enough reason to have free time. Iām trying to unlearn that. Anyone else feel this way?

Seeking Advice House cleaner
Curious as to how many of you outsource cleaning and lawn care? Weāve been working hard to downsize things so itās more manageable but with young kids and two working parents, this is still something on my wishlist.
I think itās important my kids learn to clean and learn to mow, laundry, cook etc. Longterm, we want our life to feel doable, sustainable but also have margin. Curious on your thoughts or experiences with this!

Just Venting Could use some encouragement
Hello
I woke up at 3:50 am to find a pool of water in my laundry room. My water heater decided it had enough.
I dealt with it as best I could before work- luckily I'm working from home today but I still have to drain the tank and figure out the next steps. It's one of those days where adulthood shows up whether you're ready or not.
The timing isn't great because I have some pretty ambitious goals. I'm trying to get out of debt and lose 75 pounds in the next 9 months, so I'm really trying not to let this stress knock me off course. A few months ago I probably would have spiraled. Today I'm just telling myself, "One problem at a time."
I also have an irrational fear of water heaters. I know they're just appliances, but they make me nervous. Please tell me I'm not the only one with a weird fear like that.
The good news? I guess I'll be practicing what I preach. My motto has become "Thrive on Less," and for the next few days that apparently includes less hot water for showers. š
I'd love to hear some words of encouragement or your own home repair horror stories that ended up being okay. Sometimes it helps to remember that other people have survived these unexpected expenses and disasters too.

Seeking Advice Moving out of our house in town to raise family on farm land in manufactured home?
i posted yesterday inĀ r/homesteadĀ asking for advice as we have about 150k equity in house and 150k inheritance. it has hundred plus comments with many different ideas.
in summary, our houseās mortgage is less than $600 (bought as foreclosure 3 years ago) and could realistically rent out for $2500 as we live two blocks from expensive private college.
we own 4 acres of land and absolutely love it out there. itās 10-15 mins away. we feel so at peace when we go out and we know we want to be out there and raise our kids there (2 kiddos right now). that being said, itās hard willing to forego this super cheap mortgage to get a new mortgage. our land has water and is cleared but no septic.
we really like the idea of a manufactured home. at first opposed but we like the more affordability and that it typically isnāt taxed as house but private property and depreciates (in our case we like this, we wouldnāt plan on selling it so I like that it wouldnt raise in value a bunch like our houseās mortgage does which raises property tax a lot).
that being said, ive found new manufactured homes with delivery for 90k-140k obviously still septic, electric and other costs but thankfully land is in county with zero build restriction. our thought would be to rent out our house to the college kids or grad degree kids, figure mortgage plus property tax plus $200-400 misc, after expenses around $1000-1200 a month profit. and move out to the land using about $100k of the inheritance as down payment on the manufactured home then the profit from this house to cover mortgage or to just invest profit (if we were to use full inheritance and try to buy something in cash)
I guess just hard to be willing to take the leap with golden goose mortgage here. i didnt come from wealth so idea of taking on more debt or leaving current home is hard to fathom even though we dream of raising our family on this land. another idea would be to use all of the inheritance to get a small manufactured home and have no debt on that.
appreciate any insight whether reassurance or telling us terrible idea lol.
other details:
26M with 26F SAHM. we earn $5600
total bills and expenses including mortgage/prop tax, HOI, utilities, groceries, etc are $3k
we put $625 in roth, have maxed since i started working, its around $60k
invest another $600-1000 in general brokerage
no debt besides mortgage ($516) and farm land ($240), one vehicle owned outright

Seeking Advice Simple ways to enjoy summer (when forced to take it easy)?
I'm unfortunately currently recovering from an injury, and haven't been able to do any of my usual much-loved summer activities lately (biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming at the lake, etc). I feel like summer is slipping by without me getting to really enjoy it much. I did install a bird feeder on my deck and downloaded the Merlin app, so that has been giving me some entertainment, watching and listening to the birds. We also had a friend drop off some fresh farmers market peaches which were a delicious treat. Anyone have some simple living ideas for ways to enjoy and embrace summer that don't involve too much physical effort?

Discussion Prompt Quit social media since October 2025 and started reading instead. What did you replace it with and how does it feel for you?
Like everyone else on this planet, I enjoyed social media very much. But I realized that especially when I felt a bit under the weather, I would scroll for far too many hours, many even past midnight. So, I decided to stop it all together. I deleted all my accounts, even YouTube because shorts kept sneaking up on me without realizing. I replaced scrolling with reading since October last year (2025). I don't feel I am missing out on anything. My family and friends can reach me over the phone, so I don't need it to keep in check with anyone that truly matters to me. I read the equivalent of the previous years in just a few months. Even on my commute I read now instead of scrolling. Has anyone else replaced social media with other hobby? What effect do you feel it had on you?
Later edit: Yes, I am on social media now, but not endlessly passively scrolling. It's not the brainrot I referred to above. It's to find inspiration and debate with likeminded people. If you believe this is just self boasting or feels offensive in any way to you, my apolofies, this was not my intention.

Discussion Prompt How to stop worrying about the future and start living in the present?
I understand that it may sound slightly vague. Here is the dilemma:
One one hand: we should build our future by ourselves and do plan our life for a long term, including our financial goals, mentality, physical activity, etc..
And sometimes when we go too far in thinking of our future we start stressing about it using: āwhat ifā¦ā questions. There are a lot of them.
One the other hand: we should live in the present and treat today like itās the only day that matters.
Itās kinda tough to mix two these mindsets together.
What are your thoughts?

Seeking Advice What are little things that make your daily life more enjoyable?
Hi everyone, I'm a postgraduate student, and from Monday to Friday I'm usually at my lab from 8 a.m. until around 5:30 or 6 p.m. I take a quick lunch break at noon, but then I go straight back to work. My work is mentally exhausting, and I feel stressed most of the time. When I get home, I always plan to do things I enjoy, like reading, painting, or other hobbies. But somehow I still feel mentally drained. The evening goes by so fast, and most days all I manage to do is take a shower, eat dinner, and then it's time to sleep and do it all over again. Some of my colleagues seem to enjoy their evenings much more than I do. If your life is similar, do you have some tip to give me? How do you mentally disconnect from work and actually enjoy your free time? What are some little things that make your daily life more enjoyable?

Discussion Prompt I forgot what my neighborhood looked like
I realized something kind of embarrassing recently. Iāve lived in my apartment for almost two years and I barely knew anything around me. I knew the grocery store, the bus stop and the quickest way to work, but that was pretty much it. Most days I was just rushing somewhere with my headphones in or looking at my phone. A few weeks ago I started taking small walks after dinner without really having a plan and I noticed how much I was missing. I found a little park that I never knew was there, a bakery I now stop by sometimes, and a street with the prettiest trees. Itās funny because I always thought I needed to go somewhere new to feel refreshed, but maybe I just wasnāt paying attention to the place I was already living in. Has anyone else had this happen?

Just Venting Consumerism - I think I have a problem
I think I have a massive consumerist problem. I noticed some time ago that Iām easily influenced by social media and ads (mostly user generated content). I am not rich by any means, but Iād still spend every last dollar on things I didnāt necessarily need but āTiktok told me I didā. Theyāre never things for myself, mostly for my children, household items..
I made some changes, such as adding the products to the cart and having to wait for 48 hours, putting myself on a budget, intentionally living slower, etc.. It worked, because my monthly spend has decreased drastically. I got better at staying in, spent less time online, cooking at home, living slower, I honestly believed I was doing good.
Then lately, I found myself thinking about having a 3rd child in the near future (the youngest is 9 months old) and I genuinely thought that desire was coming from the heart - that it was something I wanted, but then I had a massive epiphany. Itās not a desire to have a child, itās a desire to buy all those things that come with a new child. I knew exactly which pink flowery car seat Iād be getting if it was a girl, which brand of bottle washer Iād go with this time around. I keep seeing these videos of moms posting about their baby hauls and thinking āI will get that for the 3rd oneā. I DONāT EVEN WANT A 3RD ONE! My youngest is a handful, Iām constantly tired, I hated every second of my 2nd pregnancy and we make just enough to give the 2 children that we have a comfortable life. I love them both with my whole heart, but simultaneously, Iām well aware I do not have capacity for another one.
What I believed was a desire to have another child turned out to be a desire to buy more baby stuff. What is wrong with me? Social media needs to go, that much is clear. But Iām genuinely shook that I was able to be influenced to such massive extent.

Offering Wisdom Over the past year, my personality has changed a lot.
I no longer crave othersā approval, I eat healthier, and Iāve fallen in love with nature. I used to care a lot about what people thought of me, but now I find more peace in a quiet morning and a healthy meal.
Taking good care of yourself and those you love is the most important thing, isnāt it?
Edit:Ā It's just sharing. I'm learning English. And regarding āI no longer crave othersā approval,ā what I really mean is āstop focusing on those who hurt us.ā :)

Sharing Happiness My simple painting setup :)
I trave full time so I live out of a 55L backpack. Everything I own has to be light, portable, and usually multi-function. I thrift most of it as well :)
While I love beautiful, high-quality art supplies I use the cheap stuff just as often. I believe anyone can make art without the fancy equipment if they don't have it. These are gauche paints I got for under $10 CAD, 2 random old paintbrushes, a free notebook, and a small tupperware container that I use as a palette and water bowl. It's simple, everyone has one, and the humidity keeps the gauche fresh too!
Would love to see other simple living artist's setups and processes :)

Seeking Advice Trying to enjoy my life now instead of waiting for āsomedayā
I noticed I always have this idea that Iāll be happier later. When I earn more money, when I have a better apartment, when I finish some project, when life becomes less busy. But Iām starting to think this is a bad habit because there will probably always be something. Iām trying to enjoy normal days more but it feels harder than I expected. Like today I cooked a simple dinner and sat outside with a cup of tea and it was actually a really nice evening, but part of my brain was still waiting for something more. Has anyone else learned how to appreciate the life they already have instead of always waiting for the next stage?

Seeking Advice How do you actually get your brain to accept that the work day is over?
Iāve spent the last several months looking into evening routines for high-stress, high-output roles, partly for my own sanity, and partly because Iām building a small project focused on evening recovery environments. Before this, I spent years working in a high-stress environment as a QA engineer, constantly juggling demanding work with small kids and all of their classes. Even after the kids finally went to sleep, I was never able to shut my mind off. Something or other kept churning in the background, and I eventually got so fed up with the constant stress that I decided to take a break from work.Ā
One thing I see constantly among high performers is people who are physically exhausted but mentally wired. We have all the trackers, the biometric data, and the schedules, but when 9 PM hits, the cognitive noise just won't stop. For anyone else who struggles to transition from high-performance mode to true, restorative rest: What is the one non-digital, sensory cue or environment shift that actually tells your nervous system itās safe to downshift? No wellness fluff or complex supplement stacks, just real, grounded practices that work for you.Ā

Seeking Advice cute pet reacts to your screen time - good idea ?
I've been looking at apps like Forest and a few upcoming ones, and most of them pile on streaks, leaderboards, cosmetics, social challenges, XP systems... it starts feeling like managing a second app instead of using less of my phone.
I'm considering building a much simpler version: an animal pet whose health just reflects your recent usage, no scores, no social layer. If you keep doomscrolling it gets visibly anxious, and if it's really struggling, you can use an "emergency" item to help it recover faster, but you mostly earn that by actually cutting back, not by grinding challenges.
Genuine question: would something stripped-down like that actually get used, or do people want the gamified depth (levels, streaks, social stuff) to stay engaged long-term?

Discussion Prompt What simple things are we doing today?
Happy Sunday, everyone! What are the simple things you're doing today?
Life moves so fast that slowing down and keeping things simple can actually take effort. Today I'm focusing on a reset: chores, meal prep, laying out clothes for the week, cleaning up after the pets, and getting the yard done.
I'm skipping the usual distractionsāshopping for things I don't need, endlessly researching ways to "improve" things, or scrolling when I could just enjoy the day.
I'd love to hear what your simple Sunday looks like. I'm thinking about making this a regular "Simple Things" series over in my community, where we can check in, share the little things we're doing, and remind each other that not every day has to be optimized or complicated.
So, what's one simple thing you're doing today?
