Announcement How to use flairs

How to use flairs on r/shortcuts (so your post doesn’t get nuked or ignored)

Flairs are labels. You pick one so people instantly know what your post is about. Pick the wrong one and congrats, you’ve confused everyone.

---

First rule: always use a flair

No flair = your post is either ignored or removed. Nobody enjoys guessing what you meant.

---

Pick the right flair (this is not a personality test)

- Help

You already made a shortcut and it’s broken or not doing what you want. You want someone to fix it or explain what went wrong.

- Help (Mac)

Same as above, but your problem is on Mac. Yes, that matters because Mac Shortcuts can behave differently.

- Shortcut sharing

You built something and want to share it. You must explain what it does properly. “Cool shortcut lol” is how your post gets deleted.

- Shortcut sharing (JB)

Same as sharing, but it only works on a jailbroken device. If people need to hack their phone to use it, say so.

- Shortcut sharing (mac)

Your shortcut only works on Mac. Don’t trick iPhone users into disappointment.

- Tip/guide

You figured out a useful trick or workaround. You’re teaching something, not asking.

- Tip/guide (mac)

Same idea, but Mac-specific.

- Request

You want a shortcut but can’t build it yourself. This is you politely asking the internet to do work for you.

- Request (mac)

Same, but for Mac users.

- Discussion

You want opinions, ideas, or a conversation about Shortcuts. Not help, not sharing, just talking.

---

Special flair (pay attention, this one’s new)

- Appstore (app)

Use this when you’re posting about an app that works with Shortcuts. Either you made it or found it. The key point: the app connects with Shortcuts (actions, automations, etc.).

If it has nothing to do with Shortcuts, don’t use this just because you like the app.

---

How to choose without overthinking it

Ask yourself one question:

“What do I want from this post?”

- Fix something → Help

- Show something → Shortcut sharing

- Teach something → Tip/guide

- Ask for something → Request

- Talk about something → Discussion

- Share actual news → News

- Show an app tied to Shortcuts → Appstore (app)

If you’re on Mac, pick the Mac version. Not complicated.

---

Final reality check

Flairs exist so the subreddit doesn’t turn into a digital junk drawer. Pick the correct one, write a clear post, and people will actually help you instead of scrolling past like you don’t exist.

Help How can I automate a shortcut to run once per day at a random time between 10am and 8pm?

I made a personal daily affirmation shortcut that I am going to put in my girlfriend’s phone. It’s a randomized list of around 50 personal messages that she will love to receive daily.
I want to automate it so that it will send one affirmation per day during her usual “active” hours. I want her to be surprised when it shows up, and not be able to expect it based on what time it comes every day.

How can I set up an automation so it activates a certain shortcut once per day between a set time frame? Please explain like I’m 12; I’m not great at coding stuff and some of the shortcuts settings get confusing

Help (Mac) Folder Based Automation Not Triggering

This shortcut works perfectly when I run it manually or as a quick action, but it doesn't trigger when a files are updated in the folder. What am I doing wrong!?

Edit: I'm on MacOS27

Solved Can you make a shortcut which only triggers when you've selected text?

I want to replace the normal copy with action button copy, however my action button does something else when other triggers are available(like current app, focus etc). Can I make it so the the first thing my action button/shortcut does is to check where or not Ive selected text? This will also give bonuses like easier to make automatic clipboard, misclicking and then needing to selecct and so on

Help Is there any way to change the way my shortcut widget looks on the lock screen.

Totally new to the shortcut widget. My shortcut widget takes me to the Liverpool window in an app called Sofascore. I created a home screen icon with Liverpool’s badge and it looks really cool, I wanted to know if i could make a shortcut that had a similar icon that would go on my lock screen. Would love to know all your insights.

This shortcut will ask you for a date range. If you want the current week pick Sunday at midnight to the current time right now or the whole month or just the current day. Select one or multiple apps pick a font and it will combine all apps into a single image with the app logos and screen time.

Shortcuts link

It fetches Merriam Webster’s Word of the Day, summarizes it with LLM into a short format with pronunciation, meaning and an example, then appends it to a single Apple Notes note automatically.

Current format is something like:

Stalwart

(pronounced: STAWL-wert)

Meaning: …

Help Shortcut that opens app when the phone is locked.

I know this has been asked before but I was curious if anyone has found a new work around. I want a shortcut to open an app when iOS is locked. Here is the scenario; I have a script that runs after I turn off my morning alarm. If it is a weekend it plays music, if it is a weekday, it plays the local morning news. Currently that local news is played through Apple Music Radio. But Apple Radio sucks. It plays ads at random in the middle of news articles and traffic updates. I want to have the iHeart app open so I don’t have this issue, but it will not work because of the app restrictions. Any thoughts on ways to deal with this?

Shortcut Sharing I built a live Etsy sales widget for iPhone with Shortcuts and Scriptable

Post image
44 Upvotes

I wanted a quick way to check my Etsy sales without opening the Etsy Seller app, so I built this widget for my iPhone.

It shows:

  • today’s revenue and order count
  • monthly revenue and order count
  • a 31-day revenue chart
  • red, amber, and green indicators based on daily revenue

It does not use the Etsy API or any external server.

The workflow is:

Etsy sale email → Gmail forwarding → iCloud Mail → Shortcuts automation → monthly CSV file → Scriptable widget

The automation receives the subject line of each Etsy sale email, extracts the USD amount, and appends it to the CSV file for the current month. The Scriptable script then reads the file, calculates the totals, and displays the results in the widget.

It has been running reliably with real sales.

Shortcut Sharing Vector AI Agent- Version X.4

Vector AI Agent is an Apple shortcut that can do multi step actions on device , acting like a real agent with entirely free access to great models, rewriting personality, artifacts, and more. It is always evolving and is entirely free to use.

what did we add in this version-

the multiple models system was confusing, unstable, and frequently got time out errors. to prevent these issues, It now uses one stable model that is well balanced for any task you throw at it. free, fast, stable, and ready for anyone to use. License was also fixed.

Enjoy, Please Enjoy!

Request Shortcut to scan photo for contacts with AI and add contacts.

Basically, I would really appreciate it if someone could make or find a shortcut to select a previously scanned document. Then use ai to find contact information on it for multiple contacts, and add those contacts automatically. It should include phone numbers, emails, and notes to the contacts from the paper, in their respective contact fields.

Shortcut Sharing Finally built an idea capturing shortcut that I’ll actually use

I’ve been trying to refine this shortcut for a while and it’s become my new way of capturing my ideas before they eventually disappear.

Here's the shortcut link: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/1f3a4ec864c9475ebe4c6141f35d1e1d

The problem I kept running into was that I’d have ideas throughout the day but they all belonged in different places in my life. Sometimes it was a content idea, sometimes a task, something I perhaps wanted to research, soemthing I needed to buy, an automation idea, business idea, or even music inspiration. I either spent too much time deciding where to save it or never wrote it down at all.

Sooooo I ended up building a shortcut that makes the whole process a lot easier

How it works:

  1. Run the shortcut (I trigger it with Siri or clicking the control center).
  2. Dictate the idea.
  3. Choose what type of idea it is from a menu:
    • 💡 Random Idea
    • 🎵 Music
    • 🕺 Content Creation
    • ✍️ Editing
    • 💰 Business/Money
    • ✅ Task
    • 🛒 Thing to Buy
    • 🤖 Automation
    • 📚 Research
  4. The shortcut records the current date.
  5. It asks for a title.
  6. It creates a formatted note in my Idea Box folder in Apple Notes with the category, title, date, and the original idea.
I’ve attached a visual to show the overall workflow
Here's the whole workflow

I’m happy to share more shortcuts or share my mac version. I’d also love suggestions for ways to improve it!

Help is it possible to run two actions at the same time in a shortcut

Edit: Partially solved! Update in comments

I've recently got some new smart lightbulbs and I'm currently setting up some shortcuts to automate colour changes, auto on/off when i arrive and leave etc. Problem is, I have two bulbs in my bedroom and can only automate them one at a time in the shortcuts app. Is there a way to have both commands in the shortcut run at the same time? From what I can tell some apps support moving on from the command before the current one has finished but is shortcuts one of them? i.e. if i nest two shortcuts for the individual bulbs inside of another shortcut would that work?

The lightbulb control app is called Tapo, the bulbs are advertised as being compatible with Apple Home which I imagine would make things easier but I’ve not been able to actually connect them yet

Shortcut Sharing This Automation Gets You To Stop Scrolling

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

I made a simple automation shortcut today listed in the photos on top that turns on grayscale when you open YouTube that's supposed to help you stop scrolling. I can't figure out how to make an iCloud link that shares an automation, but I did the best I could in 5 minutes to make it into a shortcut, but the automation will run in the background constantly checking if the app is your specified app whereas you have to manually select the shortcut to make it detect if the app is the one specified which defeats the whole point. Nonetheless, to use it either way...

Open settings, go to accessibility, display and text size, color filters, turn it on and select grayscale, then turn it off. This sets the color filter to grayscale for whenever the shortcut turns on color filters.

(You can change YouTube to any app you want to stop scrolling on)

Heres the half-working Shortcut version

Discussion Thinking of building a “capture anything” Shortcut for iPhone

Post image
202 Upvotes

I had a random idea and wanted to know if I’m reinventing the wheel.

Capturing things on my iPhone always feels a little repetitive. If it’s an idea, I open Notes. If it’s a task, I open Reminders. If it’s a movie recommendation, I save it somewhere else. It all works, but I feel like there should be a faster and more enjoyable way to capture everything.

I’m thinking of building an iPhone Shortcut that acts as a single “capture anything” entry point.

It would let me save:
• Notes
• Ideas
• Tasks
• Read/Watch Later

The goal is to make the whole process as effortless as possible. If I share a link, image, PDF, YouTube video, or screenshot, it should understand what I’m saving, optionally extract text, let me set a reminder if I want, and save it with as few prompts as possible😅

Before I spend a weekend building this…
• Is there already an app or Shortcut that does this really well?
• Are there apps with better widgets that I should be looking at instead?
• Is there a feature you’d love to see in something like this?

Would love to hear your thoughts😄

OS 27 beta OS 27 Storage Encryption

As I’m sure a lot of you already know, with OS 27, Shortcuts can now store content which is persisted, and can be set as a global variable and accessed from your other devices.

I’m just wondering if there is any information about whether or not the content is encrypted?

The reason I’m asking is because I’m curious if it would be a viable option for storing secrets, such as API keys and such.

At the minute I have my API Keys in Notes app, so this feature wouldn’t be any worse.

But I’m curious to hear what people think, and if it could be a viable option.

Request Microsoft Automate and File Submission

I’m trying to compose a shortcut that will allow me to run a Power Automate flow I’ve created that creates a timesheet and then saves as a PDF in my OneDrive file system, I then want it to take that PDF and upload to a different Sharepoint Folder.

Is something like this even possible, if so how would i go about creating it? Thanks for any assistance.

Help Is there a way to extract content from mail into Shortcuts?

I receive several newsletters daily that often overlap.  My plan is to create a shortcut that extracts content from unread emails from specific senders.  This content will then be sent to the cloud for summarisation.  Optionally, the emails can be marked as read and moved to the trash afterwards.
