Hey folks. I've spent the last couple months building Pocknix, an Arch Linux ARM distro that turns the Retroid Pocket 6, 5 and Flip 2 into something that feels like a small Steam Deck: power on, land in Big Picture, pick a game, play.

I say 'SteamOS-like', but 'CachyOS-like' would probably be more accurate: while it does boot into SteamOS' gaming mode, the Arch base is completely mutable. You're free to install any packages you like and modify system partitions - useful for installing things like Tailscale. I've also tweaked the kernel and userspace for maximum perfomance/smoothness in a similar vain to the tweaks Cachy makes.

What it does

• Native ARM Steam + Proton 11 ARM + FEX - many x86 Windows games just work. Performance generally matches or beats PC emulation on Android (GameHub etc.); compatibility is a bit behind but improving fast on Valve's side.
• Real sleep mode - based on my PR over at ROCKNIX. Experimental, but good enough to daily drive.
• Performance tuned for the hardware - custom ROCKNIX-based kernel, scx_lavd scheduler for smooth frame pacing, graphics stack compiled for modern Snapdragon rather than a generic ARM baseline.
• Emulation built in - ES-DE with preconfigured emulators (NES through PS2/GameCube/Switch). Drop ROMs in ~/Emulation, star a favorite and it shows up in your Steam library.
• A real desktop too - Plasma Mobile session (touch-friendly), plus Waydroid for Android apps incl. Play Store: download an APK and it installs itself with a shortcut, like a native app.
• It's just Arch - fully mutable, updates via pacman -Syu, install whatever you want. Think CachyOS, not a locked-down image.
• Quality-of-life - Decky with a Pocknix Control plugin (fan curves, per-game FEX presets and audio buffer), MicroSD support so Steam Deck formatted cards mount and show up in Steam.

This is v0.1.0 and I need testers:

Suspend/resume works but is experimental. Expect a few rough edges.

Install runs from microSD, so Android stays untouched on internal storage. On the RP5/Flip 2 you don't even need a custom bootloader - the stock boot menu does it. The RP6 needs the ROCKNIX bootloader (same one ROCKNIX itself uses). Installation to internal is also possible via an app in the desktop. Full instructions in the README. Usual disclaimer: flashing is at your own risk.

Credit where it's due: Pocknix builds on the excellent work of ROCKNIX - the kernel, device enablement and even the name come from them and this wouldn't exist otherwise. If you mainly want retro emulation, ROCKNIX is fantastic; Pocknix is for when you want Steam, Proton, and a full Linux system on top.

I really wanted the Thor to be my one-and-done device (and to be honest, it mostly is). I even got rid of a few things to fund the Thor in hopes it would be all I need. As great as it is, I definitely found Gameboy games lacking. They look too weird blown up on the top screen, and it feels awkward to play them on the bottom.

I didn't want to grow my collection too much (as I do think there is an e-waste issue in this hobby), but I figured the RP Classic would still fit a niche, and sure enough, it does. Tetris and Tetris DX are my go-to casual/passive games, and they look and feel perfect on the Classic. Playing them in their intended form factor really makes a difference.

More colorful stuff like Link's Awakening just looks so crispy. I'm currently using the dot matrix shader but increased saturation a little. I never owned a GB Color so I'm not too concerned with accuracy. I'm also committing a great sin and blowing GB and GBC up to full screen (not GBA though...I'm not a monster).

All of this has even got me considering the Nova for the 4:3 systems, but I don't know. Widescreen hacks on the Thor are pretty nice and I don't wanna slip into buying an unnecessary amount of handhelds.

Just got myself a rp6 silver stick top 8gb, anything I should know? These are also a list of the games I want to try to see if they work and are fun to play. (Ps i have a 256gb micro sd on the way to download the games onto)

After spending a good amount of time with the Retroid Pocket 5, I can say it has been a great purchase overall.

The OLED screen is easily one of its best features. Retro games, pixel art, RPGs, platformers, and metroidvanias look fantastic. Games like Mother 3, Wario Land 4, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, and Mina the Hollower feel perfect for this device.

Performance has also been very good. Older systems run easily, and PSP, Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, PS2, and some 3DS games work surprisingly well. Not every demanding game is perfect, but the RP5 gives you access to a massive catalogue.

One thing buyers should know is that Android handhelds are not completely plug-and-play. Getting the best experience requires learning about emulator settings, BIOS files, controller mapping, ROM folders, save locations, Android permissions, and launchers.

I also learned how to transfer files using FTP, manage my microSD card, install texture packs, and adjust settings for individual games. I had a few frustrating moments, especially with save states and SD card formatting, but once everything was organized, the device became much easier and more enjoyable to use.

I currently use iisu as my launcher, and with a minimal black background, the OLED screen looks excellent. Once properly set up, the RP5 feels like a dedicated console rather than just an Android device with controls.

PC streaming has been another highlight. My PC is connected through Ethernet, and I usually get around 3 ms of decoding time. Games like Persona 5, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Tunic, Doom, Elden Ring, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Divinity: Original Sin 2 all stream very well.

The biggest limitation is the 5.5 inch screen. It is great for retro and 2D games, but modern titles with small text, detailed environments, or complex interfaces can feel cramped. For serious PC streaming, I would prefer a 7 or 8 inch handheld.

At the same time, the compact size is part of what makes the RP5 appealing. It is easy to carry, feels good for shorter sessions, and is much more portable than a handheld PC.

Android ports are another great bonus. Playing something like Hollow Knight directly on Android is impressive, and features such as fast-forward make older RPGs easier to enjoy.

My other issue is that it is very easy to download too many games and spend more time organizing the library than actually playing. Keeping a smaller active list has helped me enjoy the device more.

Pros:

• Beautiful OLED screen
• Incredible pocketable device
• Excellent retro emulation
• Great performance for its size
• Very good PC streaming
• Compact and portable
• Great for RPGs, platformers, and 2D games
• Lots of customization

Cons:

• The screen feels small for some modern games
• Some systems and games need adjustments
• Android handhelds have a real learning curve
• It is easy to become overwhelmed by the huge catalogue

Overall, I do not regret buying the RP5. It is powerful, flexible, and especially good for retro games, Android ports, 2D titles, RPGs, and occasional PC streaming.

I do not feel the need to upgrade anytime soon. I would rather enjoy everything it already supports and wait until a future handheld offers a genuinely meaningful improvement.

This case from Yajojo is excellent and fits the TPU grip. Nice faux felt interior lining. Woven exterior hardshell, the kind you often see on cases like this. Can't recommend it enough. Can be found on Amazon.

Works well so far, controls are mapped out of the box. Still a pretty new project so may be bugs but I haven't seen any yet.

Has a lot of options and customization, can select ruleset, speed, music and sfx vol, music filters to low or high pass the music in different ways, color options for black and white, classic green, gbc colors, sgb red colors, inverted, etc. Also has gbc fx and filtering options for each of those selections letting you customize further. And an option to tilt the camera.

Also mod support.

Hey folks, I'm considering putting rocknix/pocknix/armada on my RP6 but I'm a little hesitant about it because it's kind of a lot, it's a risk, and I don't want to risk bricking my irreplaceable OG 12GB rp6.

I have some questions that I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts on:

1. I understand that rocknix can be run off a usb. is there a big performance hit in doing so?

2. Is there any risk to the internal disk by running rocknix from usb? i.e. do I have to permanently change the device in order to run rocknix? can this still result in me killing the device?

3. is there any recovery if I do brick my rp6? Are there android images I can flash to revert back to factory state?

Hi! Just got my retroid pocket classic, but when i turn it on it have these lines on the screen. Is it damaged? Can i fix it? And if not what should i do?

So im getting an 8gb rp6 and I was wondering if this list is valid or if anything might be too harsh on the device. Im so excited and im so happy to be apart of this community and to learn new things about how this device works!

Hi everyone! Exactly 1 month after I placed my order, my brand new RP6 has arrived.

Along with the device I bought the official grip, but it seems that its shape is not exactly how it is supposed to be. It’s a bit bent on its lower side and it doesn’t fully couple the device on its upper side, as you can see in the pictures. If I keep it pressed it with my fingers it does fit, but obviously I can’t be doing that the whole time.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there anything I can do to fix it? Is it worth reaching out to Retroid? Or maybe I just buy another grip and end of story?

Since they both can be docked idk which to pick after seeing RGC video on the nova he said its not very portable where as the rp mini v2 looks amazingly portbale bu5 do 4:3 games look good on the rp mini v2 and what about wii I love nsmbw please give input of your opinion and maybe a little bit of pros and cons for each device also if u have the rp mini v2 what is your experience with device

Hello, I’m hoping to get some help with turnip drivers for Eden. I’m trying to install the mr Purple T19 driver on Eden, when I use the “fetch” feature it’s telling me that it’s already installed. But when I try to select it you can see that it doesn’t show up. When I try to install it manually I get a message saying it’s already installed. Has anyone encountered this before?

So to clarify a bit, I have already a switch 1, switch 2 but lately I’ve been thinking about getting another handheld device specifically for emulation. Now, my weird confession is that I am in love with a wii u, so my question is would it make sense to get a retroid pocket 5 in order to have a whole bunch of emulators on there, hopefully including the wii u? Or just bute the bullet and get a wii u and have everything on there?

How have you guys set this up? I had it set to press L3 to activate hot keys and then select + start to bring up the menu in game, it worked first time, but now when I press select + start it’s just closing my game? A tutorial would be a great help, new to all of this

Does anyone know if the Nova screen is the same size as the RP5 if playing 4:3 games? (i.e. not counting the black bars)

i have seen mixed reactions, but i cant see a concrete test or awser of how it runs. i though it run well because its basiclly HL2, that runs well.

Carrier: I paid for DHL but they changed it to YunExpress so I wonder if I could ask for them to refund the difference. 🤔

Plans for it: I grew up with Nintendo DS and PSP so I will be playing games for those. Especially the games I couldn’t get as a kid. Also play games I didn’t grow up like entire early GoW catalogs, Saint Row games, Legend of Zelda. I will also see what can be done for some steam games.

Offline works aswell via plutonium lanlauncher on GitHub.
Retroids sleep feature makes for easy zombies gameplay as you can close the lid and come back to the same spot you left off 8 hours later with no gpu/cpu load and minimal battery loss, could play your match through multiple days.
