Momotaro Momotaro Standard Straight (MMJB0100) - Thoughts and Measurements
Hey Yāall
Iāve been looking at buying a very clean, full cut pair of jeans, and decided on these from Momotaro. I also have a formality standard at work, and the regularity of the denim was appealing. In the pictures, the new pants are with the blue shirt, the altered pants are with the orange.
Separately, it was my first time ordering from Blue Owl, and I also found their measurements to be really excellent, way different than from Momoās actual store. It was their denim search tool that led me to these in the first place, as I like a 12ā rise on a 30-31ā waist, which eliminates a lot of āhigh riseā denim. For reference, I am 5ā10ā 145lbs.
Out of the box, it looks very slick. Little weft shows, and the indigo is dyed very evenly. It also was very smooth. There is no twist in the leg, and it falls symmetrically on the leg. The stitching seems quite even to my eye, and the indigo patch really adds to the styling of these pants as dressy as jeans can be.
The measurements for a new size 30 were as follows:
Waist - 31.1
Front rise - 12.1
Thigh - 11.9
Knee - 9.5
Hem - 8.7
Inseam - 34.3
I then did a hot cycle in the washer with no soap. I do this as I have found soaking does not remove all the vertical shrink vs a wash cycle in a machine, which is how I prefer to clean my pants. I also did not want to end up with too short pants after a hem, a mistake I have made before. The color remained nearly identical but the texture became a bit hairier. It did not add any twist.
The post wash measurements:
Waist - 31.0 (it was 30.6 fresh out the wash, but stretched after one wear)
Front rise - 11.8
Thigh - 11.7
Knee - 9.5
Hem - 8.5
Inseam - 33.1
Inseam (after hem) - 32.0
I am satisfied with how it turned out. The hot wash settling the waist at 31ā works well, as if it stretched past that it might be too big. It also helped with the diaper ass. I am a fan of the style, and the pants do fill the niche I intended them to.
As a final note, I am confident I wonāt be buying any wider. I try to stay somewhat cognizant of how heritage wear and selvedge denim appear to people who donāt share our interest, and these pants exist on the border between style and costume. You can find other posts where people grapple with that tension when trying out these jeans. With all clothes, consideration has to be made towards what matches, but with these, there are definitely other articles of clothing I now see that I canāt wear together or it would look too conspicuous for the style Iām trying to present. For anybody who prefers to dress uniquely but not ostentatiously, that would the only consideration Iād have before buying.
