Hii, I am arriving at NYC on 27th evening at JFK airport.

My apartment is in Sunset park, Brooklyn.. I was wondering what mode of transport to use and which would be cost effective. I have couple of questions :

1. I have a backpack and two luggage ( 4 wheel ones). Am I allowed to enter the subway with luggage? or will they stop me?
   
2. Since I arrive at 5 or 6pm.. will the subway be crowded?
   
3. How expensive would a Uber or Taxi be, compared to Subway?

Hi, so I‘m from long island and recently got a remote job that pays $41,600 a year. I don’t plan on moving out from where I live any time soon, however, I was just curious because if I did ever intend to move out, it would be somewhere in Brooklyn or Queens.

To be specific, I know living alone comfortably would be close to impossible with only making $41,600 a year, however, if I had 1 or 2 roommates, would I be able to live somewhat comfortably in Brooklyn, or even Queens?

We signed a lease for an apartment through Rentopia so seems legitimate. Went through the entire application process (3 roommates plus a guarentor) submitting numerous financial documents each. Plus went through their credit screening process. Paid our deposits through Rentopia site for an August 1 move in date. And this morning received an email saying current tenants have decided to stay until the end of August, which according to their lease is their right? How is that possible? We have a lease starting Aug 1. Are we being scammed? Should we pull out? Except we tried about 25 apartments before getting this one. Worried we have no chance of finding one by August 1 now and will be forced to keep this one. But what if they delay again Sept 1?
UPDATE: Rentopia said the current tenants have a lease thru Aug but asked to get out of it one month early if it could be filled. So Rentopia filled it with us. But now the current tenants can’t find a new place so plan to stay through their lease. It’s been so hard to find a place so we’ve now decided to stick with this place and hope they don’t change their tune at the end of August. In the mean time, struggling to find a one month sublet.

me(26) and my close friend (24) are planning to move from chicago to nyc in october. I just got a job offer for a contractor role and she has a promotion pending that would allow her to relocate. We’re looking for 2 bd apartments but open to 3bd with a third roommate. Our budget for rent as just us two is around $3k and we’re looking at places in Brooklyn. Our combined annual income as just us 2 would come out to $115k~

Our challenges: both of our credit is poor (lots of student loans) and we don’t have a guarantor for either of us.

Any advice/tips on how/where to find places?

I’ve been living in Chicago for the past two years after spending the previous 12 years in Austin. While I like Chicago, it can feel a bit stagnant and seems to lack some of the energy, creativity, and innovation I grew accustomed to in Austin - even though Austin is a much smaller city.

I work in tech and have spent years traveling to New York for work. It has always been my favorite city to visit, and I feel ready for a change and seriously considering making the move.

I’m planning to spend a week or two working remotely from New York this Fall to get a better feel for everyday life there, but I’m struggling to narrow down which neighborhoods to explore. I work from home, so I’d need a one-bedroom apartment with enough space for a comfortable work setup. I earn around $300,000 a year and would ideally like to keep rent under $5,500 per month.

So far, I’ve been looking at DUMBO, Williamsburg, the Financial District, Battery Park City, and NoLita, since they seem to offer a decent balance of value, amenities, and proximity to neighborhoods I’d want to spend time in.

I’m single, active, and hoping to meet new people, as most of my existing contacts in New York are colleagues. I’d appreciate any thoughts on the neighborhoods I mentioned, as well as suggestions for other areas I may be overlooking!

Spent the last week researching interstate movers. And somehow, I feel more confused than when I started.

Read reviews and gone through countless Reddit threads.

But apparently, every company seems to have the same mix of feedback.

I kept seeing names like:

At this point, I'm less interested in the best cross country movers. More interested in what actually matters when choosing a mover.

In your opinion, what should be my deciding factor like…

estimate process? binding pricing? delivery timeline? responsiveness?

Okay I wanna first start by saying that, I know everybody hates a transplant. I grew up in San Francisco and Oakland and there was nothing I hated more than seeing some rich fuck move into the neighborhood gentrifying the place up with daddy’s money. With that being said, I still wanna get the fuck out of California and experience something that I’ve always wanted to experience before I die. I’m 28 years old and I’m getting out of the Marine Corps and essentially daddy government is gonna pay my rent as long as I go to school.

Now that I’ve gotten the backstory out of the way I wanna ask:

1. What’s the best way to move my stuff over? I know having a car is kind of out of the question and I dont know if i feel comfortable moving with a PC on my motorcycle. (I don’t have much stuff just clothes and my computer essentially)
   
2. What are some neighborhoods I should avoid? I hear great things about Queens but is there any part of Queens I should avoid looking at apartments in?
   
3. I don’t know anybody in the city I’m going alone. I’m a social guy, but has anybody been in my shoes before? What was it like making friends in a new place? I moved from Oakland to San Diego so it was fairly easy for me to adapt the first time I did something like this cause the move wasn’t so big.

I hope I’m not sounding like a prick with this post just generally trying to get some information so I can plan the next 6 months of my life. Thank you all <3

I have been looking for a studio in the UES while I stay at a short term rental with roommates and it is actually really nice! I have only ever lived with family or by myself, but I am now considering looking for a shared place. I guess I just wanted insight because I’ve also heard of bad experiences. Would you live on your own or have roommates if you had the choice and why?

For context I just moved to the city about a month ago without any connections so maybe I am being too hopeful that they would become my friends lol

Hi everyone - I’ve read a few post about this but would love to get direct advice on my situation.

I received an offer for a company in FiDi and have a budget of around 6k for an apartment. My partner works remote and I would be hybrid so we’re looking for a 2bd to be able to both take meetings/have family etc.

I was weighing the pros and cons and Jersey City would obviously give us the most bang for our buck while having my commute be reasonable. However, I can’t help but feel influenced by the folks saying it just isn’t the same and that we wouldn’t get the full NYC experience. I also have heard it’s hard getting around the city from Brooklyn as well (other option we’ve thought about).

The NYC tax would be a pretty substantial savings but wondering if it’s even worth it if we want to move for 2-3 years and should just bite the bullet.

Advice Request:

Is the PATH that bad at night? We like to take weekly date nights and wouldn’t mind going to the city but would that create issues when getting back past 9? Is it much better in downtown Brooklyn/Dumbo?

Any advice regarding comparable areas in Manhattan (as far as budget with a reasonable commute) are welcome as well. If you have additional tips on shopping for an apartment or how to identity scams on other websites besides Street Easy I would appreciate it.

I'm gay and want to move to a city that is more diverse and accepting of someone like myself, so I'm considering NYC, but I'm scared to move there. It seems as if the gay men there only partake in hookup culture, intercourse parties/partying in general, clubbing, drinking, and do not want to be in any serious or monogamous relationship at that. Most of them just want open relationships so they can continue to hookup with other men. I'm also not into any of that stuff I just mentioned. Because of the type of gay scene in NYC, I'm wondering if maybe I should find another area to move. I'd like to find a partner who I can settle down with, but it doesn't seem as if you can find that in the NYC gay scene. Should I try to find another urban area that may have less of that even though I like NYC? If so, does anyone have any recommendations?

**EDIT: I’ve seen some photos that looked very AI generated and immediately wrote those off. The places I’m talking about seemed legitimate, at least on the surface, which makes me think there’s something wrong with them.**

I’ve been on Craigslist looking at rooms in Brooklyn and was pretty taken aback to see some places that were only $600-800/month. Most of these places did seem to have windows, at least if the photos are real. What’s the catch? Is there black mold or rodent infestations?

I’m trying to move for a block in lic area and discovered that Dumbo Moving offers quite competitive prices. I’d like to inquire about Dumbo Moving and compare it to Otter Moving. Has anyone had experience using either of these moving companies?

Hello! I've been living in Brooklyn for the last two years and am moving out of my apartment in Bed-Stuy at the end of the month. I'll be staying at my partner's for a month while I look at apartments in Bushwick / Williamsburg for a Sept. 1st move in. In the mean time, I need to figure out an affordable, reliable way to move my belongings out, put them in storage for a month, and then retrieve them for a move in. I have about a bedroom's worth of stuff (mattress, dresser, lamp, rug etc.) as my previous roommate moved out most of the rest of the apartment save for a kitchen appliance or two. Any advice would be much appreciated! My current tentative plan is to rent a month-long unit with Public Storage and then use a service like Lugg to transport my stuff there.

I am going to school in NYC for the fall. My housing has not been confirmed yet by the school, besides an estimated move-in date of mid-August, but my lease in Baltimore is ending soon, so I will be moving out in a week or so. I don't have family nearby and really want to bring my two pets (hamster and snake) with me.

Now, here's the conundrum:

1. I can get rid of most of my furniture, but the rest of the stuff will overfill an SUV, but definitely too little to request a full-on moving company service.
2. I am estimating a budget of $1000-1500 for the move due to financial restraints. At most, I would accept $2000. And from the quotes I got from moving companies, it is usually $2500 and above.
3. Exotic pets are not allowed on Amtrak and are very restricted for flights. This leaves my only option to driving.
4. The drive to NYC is 3-4 hours. I have not touched a car for more than a year, and I don't trust my driving skills. At the same time, I couldn't find anyone I know nearby who is willing to drive for that long distance.

So far, I think that I will store my things locally at a friend's place and stay over for a few weeks before moving out again. But for the moving pieces, I have the following thoughts after getting my housing:

1. I ship my stuff through UPS / U-Box and find someone with a normal sedan to drive me to NYC, with my pets in small containers and a suitcase
2. I find a driver (informing them of the pet situation, of course) and get a U-Haul and move everything in one go

I feel like I complicated the situation too much with all these factors. Are there other options I should consider in this case? Do you guys have experience finding drivers for small moves? I'd really appreciate any suggestions!

So one thing I was really excited about moving to nyc for was the recreational marijuana laws. Throughout all my time in college I was really nervous to smoke weed because of the rules of my school and state, but im looking into it now and it seems like on paper its not much better in nyc.

In my apartment specifically, I can’t have any paraphernalia in the unit and cannot smoke within “2000 feet” of my building as per my lease (which anything over a quarter mile is a little excessive to me, but what do I know). Then I look it up, and I’ve seen people say you can’t smoke in the park, you can’t smoke in front of businesses, you can’t stand stationary and smoke. So where CAN I smoke? I obviously don’t want to be a dick to my roommates and risk my lease being terminated, so a calm outdoor or indoor third space suggestion would be much appreciated!

If you want better context to give me suggestions or ideas, I’m moving to the Morningside Heights area. TIA for the help!!

I moved to NYC last November, and since then I haven’t made any friends. I only talk to my coworkers, but everything is always work-related.

I’ve wanted to make friends outside of work, but I’m not sure where to start. I don’t drink alcohol, so going to bars and clubs isn’t really my thing. I’ve also been thinking about going to the same place consistently, joining a club, taking a class, or volunteering, but the thing is, I don’t want to come across as a “pick me.” You know, like that person who’s “pick me, choose me, love me.”

Personally, I also feel weird starting a conversation with someone because that person might think, “why is this guy talking to me?”. Basically, social anxiety.

What do you guys think I should do? To add more context: also, I mostly work remotely, which adds to that weirdness and social anxiety when going out.

Moving from Florida to NYC, working remote, and I believe that I’ll need to pay state and city taxes.

My question is, as of when?
How do I track this?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Every day someone posts their budget plus a list like "safe, social, near work, good food, close to the train" and asks which neighborhood. And the answers are always just people naming where they happen to live.

Here's the thing nobody says: at most budgets you can't have all five. Astoria answers a different version of your list than the LES does. So when strangers pick your neighborhood, they're really picking which of your priorities gets sacrificed, without knowing you.

The question that actually works: which two things on your list would you refuse to give up? Answer that first and most neighborhood debates settle themselves. Ask it after you've fallen for an apartment and the apartment answers it for you.
