After making the visualizer, and getting some positive response on [r/stormchasing](r/stormchasing), I made a web app that prioritizes weather as visuals rather than data. There’s no need to have a PhD to understand what’s going on above you. The twisting shows shear, the glow is moisture, the strands are CAPE, the colors are temp, and the particles represent air movement. More technical meteorological data is hidden in a drawer that pops up.

The best part is there’s no AI—I’m pulling solely from raw HRRR data from weather.gov’s API and recreating it in 3D. It’s at Aello.live if you want to check it out!

Look around the top right of the clouds

The resultant warming from the latest Kelvin Wave has made pronounced differences show up in the current subsurface anomaly pattern, compared to the same time in 1997-98. It is MUCH warmer farther west (particularly around 150-160W) than July 1997 was.

Additionally, SST anomalies are much higher at this point in the year compared to 1997 (and any other year in the observed datasets). This event is going to continue to progress, with continued warming at the surface in the coming months.

Driving near Nashville at sunset, I saw dozens of perfectly straight black vertical lines above the trees. I stopped to look and went under the trees, it wasn’t raining, there were no webs, smoke, insects, or anything hanging from the trees, and up close they looked exactly the same. I have photos and video. Has anyone seen this before or know what it is? Looking for a scientific explanation, not paranormal speculation.

Maybe it’s just a normal storm along the frontal boundary but when I see a line of storms like this I think of a squall line. However, rather than a mostly north/south line moving from west to east this is a much more west/east line moving west to east. Is this common? What causes it? I’m not as familiar with mid-Atlantic weather systems but this is the longest/narrowest convective SIGMET I’ve seen personally.

I can't remember ever seeing something like this before, but I live in an urban area so I don't generally get to see a landscape at a distance. Can anyone tell me more about it?

Anyone with experience in the field, do you think I would be better off taking 6 months off of school to get into a school with a meteorology major, or attend a school where I could get environmental science major and geophysics minor. Would it be harder to become an atmospheric scientist without a meteorological degree?

Caught this photo yesterday during the July 21st short tornado outbreak along the mid-Atlantic and Ohio valley. This photo is from the Caldwell NJ tornado. Very visible rotation ngl.

Started out thin and wispy and then became thick and smooth.

Low dew point. Cloud base was pretty high up. You can see some virga in the bottom right part of the cloud. It was flattening out into an anvil (top right part of the cloud), there was also a cumulonimbus with an anvil next to it that i saw after i flew past it (2nd photo)

Has anyone used Windows on a MacBook via Parallels? Does it work well for any meteorology software compared to a Windows machine? I’m planning on going to grad school for meteorology and wondering if I need to swap my MacBook Pro for a Windows computer. Would be easiest to use Parallels, but I’m not sure if it is throttled down to where it wouldn’t run software efficiently. I’m also not fully aware of the what all software may be necessary and if they are compatible with macOS. Any input is welcome😅
