90 Day Men Sample

Hello everyone! Not really sure if this post fits the subreddit but I was wondering if anyone could help me identify what film or other piece of media the intro dialogue in Sink Potemken by 90 Day Men is sampled from (If it even is a sample). Much appreciated!

Math rock bands that made a single excellent album and then broke up

I am struck by recent threads that referenced The Bulletproof Tiger and Clever Girl, both of which released 1 (or 2) albums and then broke up, with no hope of a follow up or tour.

Who else burned brightly and ever so briefly?

PrettyMuchJazz LFAMTQ - Floppy Disk Split album between Fusion group and Math Rock group

Listen/here:

https://144mbmusic.bandcamp.com/album/lfamtq

LFAMTQ is a split record between two northeast US rock groups that draw on less common influences, pushing boundaries between fusion and rock as well as the conventions of those genres. Talento’s group releases fusion that has a clear alternative rock influence, while LFA releases post, math, and emo rock with a jazz influence.

In the artists' words:

As soon as someone hears a saxophone, they tend to put the music in the jazz bucket, but I wanted the music to challenge that.

The [LFA] tracks themselves were all written with the medium and it’s technical limitations in mind. Compositionally, it was an exercise in being concise... there’s many phrases that end a little earlier than you might expect, which makes a really distinct and unique feel and sound.

You can read a full interview with the artists here on our Substack

Can someone pls help me understand this band? They’re breaking my brain

I might get eaten alive for this, but I must ask bc they’re far too complex/intricate to be labeled emo. The many layers made me feel like I was doing a math equation in my head, which made me realize that I think this is more “math rock” than anything. Some of their stuff even reminds me of Slint.. Like a harsher version of Slint. Can anyone provide feedback? Thanks!!

Experiment: Playing "wrong" on purpose (looking for people to try this/share tracks)

Hey everyone,

I’ve been messing around with a weird exercise lately and wanted to see if anyone else has tried something similar, or wants to give it a shot.

Basically, I spent a session improvising with one goal: try to play as "wrong" as possible. Every time I felt my fingers drifting toward a familiar shape, a clean chord resolution, or a scale pattern my muscle memory wanted to fall into, I forced myself to turn the opposite way. Maximum dissonance, intentionally awkward intervals, and trying to stack as many "wrong" polyphonic notes as I could manage without letting it resolve. Atonal.

The weird thing is, after listening back, it didn’t just sound like random noise, it created this really strange, unexpected kind of musical logic that actually felt interesting. At least to me.

I uploaded a audio track of my attempt here: https://voca.ro/13CQ7d8VEub8

I want to turn this into a bit of a loose experiment. If you play guitar, try taking 2 or 3 minutes to improvise while actively sabotaging your instincts. Play too many notes, pick the "worst" harmonies, fight your muscle memory, and upload it.

Curious to hear what happens when other people try to force their hands to do the exact opposite of what feels natural. Drop a link if you decide to record a run!

“Memory Can...” — 回忆罐Memory Can/Cold Hour冷时 out now.

https://open.spotify.com/album/1nhhgn9VLM4CTRig5zMu9q

This is a studio-recorded soundtrack album crafted for an imaginary coming-of-age film. My collaborator Cold Hour and I drew from our shared youthful recollections to build this collection dubbed Memory Can. The brief tracks map out pivotal life scenes without fixed character motifs, inviting listeners to step into the story as their own protagonist.

It is also a nostalgic record with a unique twist. Most of these compositions were written over twelve years ago, born from an adolescence shaped by the works of Moonlit Sailor, Explosions In The Sky and toe. Those melodies faded and slipped from my memory as years passed, their tone forever tied to that filtered, idealized youth. We acted as if piloting a time machine, resurrecting these sonic memories using two aging laptops and humble, basic gear. Unexpectedly, we also forged brand-new sounds and fresh recollections throughout the recording process.

Memories can bring us comfort just as easily as they can drag us into despair.I cut my memories into fragments and store them in sealed cans. I open one occasionally for a fleeting taste, then march onward.

Opinion Rápida de: There no 666 in Outer Space (Hella)

Nota: 8/10.

Cancion Favorita: The Ungrateful Dead (10/10).

New Release Fake Radio - This Will Never Change

Hey there r/mathrock,

Our band Fake Radio has just released our debut album, called This Will Never Change. It features a couple of hardcore math rock songs that we think you guys will really love, one pretty jangly number called Before, and one heavy crushing tune called Grey Havens. We hope you guys enjoy those two songs in particular, and the rest of the album too!

Post-hardcore / mathrock from Puebla, Mexico. Our debut record is out.

Hey everybody, I play in a four piece post-hadcore from Puebla, Mexico called acróbata, and our debut record's out.

It's called tèlesma — ancient Greek for "talisman." The word traveled: Greek → Arabic → Spanish talismán, and never lost its meaning. Felt right for a record about carrying stuff you can't put down.

The thing on the cover is a trapelacucha, a Mapuche silver pectoral. It's not a design — it belongs to our drummer's family in Chile. An actual talisman on the cover of a record named after the word.

Sounds like: At The Drive-In meets meets Thrice that also meets and hangs out occasionally with American Football, but also enjoys some taints of heavier stuff very occasionally.

Lyrics in Spanish. 12 songs. Lyrics are about grief and redemption.

Ask me anything — about the record, the artwork, whatever if you feel like it! Happy to answer!

Thanks for listening guys.
