Help Macbook Air M3 dented

My stupid cat ran over the table and pushed the laptop completely to the ground about 3 ft. Pretty obvious where the dent is and is already reflecting on the screen. Will this get worse overtime? Can i still get it fixed?

Discussion Mac OS Tahoe Monitor Probleme mit HP Dock?

Upvotes

Jetzt zeigen jedoch alle Monitore dasselbe Bild an.

Help High vs Automatic power mode

I just got supplied an M5 max to replace my M3 pro, and found out there are these new power modes.

I’ve done some reading on Apple support about them and in past posts here but I’m still not quite sure if there’s some down side of running high power mode when connected to power all the time.

I wondered if anyone knew if I did that if I’d lose some efficiency when I’m running under really light loads and would just be better off running automatic instead.

Or if the only difference is that it prefers to ramp up the cooling before throttling?

My next step will be figuring out MLX I think.

Discussion Ram vs Storage

So i’ve been doing some research so i wanted to asks a question of the group; I am getting the M5 Pro and i’m looking at refurb 48GB Ram with 2TB hard drive vs New machine with 64GB Ram with 1TB hard drive. both are ranging at the 3.8k mark. It will be my only and primary machine coming from an Intel Mac. I use FCP, LLM and do massive video editing so I’m wondering do i go New out the box or Refurb and would your sacrifice RAM over Storage

Discussion Got 14-inch, Apple M5 Pro Apple certified refurbished for $2,629, good deal

Initially bought 16 inch, m4 pro, 48gb RAM, 512gb SSD for ~$2600 from Best Buy, plus needed to buy apple care for $409/ 3years. Had placed order for pick up and was going to be ready this Saturday. Was planning to use locally for LLMs, and some heavy load stuff. So needed the high specs.

However, was not that happy with the purchase considering the high amount, and was having hard time digesting that I am spending 2.6K on a laptop at retail price.

Fortunately found the Apple refurbished one for ~$2630 + ~$115 (apple care yearly)
14inch, M5 Pro, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 48gb RAM, 1tb SSD.

I think this is a good deal, what do you guys think ? The primary downside of the Apple refurbished product is that it's ~$30 extra (not at all of a concern) and its screen size is 14-inches vs 16 inches for m4 pro. I currently use m3 pro, 36gb, 16 inches for office work and I like it, screen size wise but it's quite heavy. But, 14 inches for dev on m5 pro, dont think, it should matter much right ?

So, little confused, the best buy order is still active and can be picked up this Saturday.

Discussion Instead of paying $69 for an RGB status light in my MacBook’s SD card slot, I turned my iPhone into one

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

SidePulse is an RGB light that fits inside a MacBook Pro’s SD card slot and shows what your AI agent is doing.

Instead of buying the $69 hardware, I built an iPhone app that recreates it. Green means working, orange means it needs permission and red means something failed.

Would you use the app or buy the real hardware?

Help Jumpcloud remote auf gekaufte Rechner

Hi,

Tips Macbook Pro (M4 Max, 128g Shared Mem) has been very slow. OS AI features to blame

Computer has been dragging, particularly Mail and a drafting program my industry uses (this one is pretty typical and the reason I splurged on the 128 mem). I have been looking in Activity Monitor and didn't see anything out of the ordinary when I checked. Today I saw this little guy: textunderstandingd.

Turns out this is the built in AI apple uses to pore over your programs and try to extrapolate and predict text. I think my computer was choking out when mail would open because the AI got in there and went nuts. Also this screenshot of the CPU doesn't do it justice. There were moments I would see it go over 250% of the CPU usage. Once I went in and turned off the Apple AI in settings AND Siri, and the reset the laptop the processes stopped. But a reset did appear to be necessary.

Just wanted to throw this out there in case anyone else is having this issue with the OS. I hadn't experienced this until this week.

Tips MacBook Pro 2016 gifted to son. Is he okay with safari?

I recently moved from MacBook Pro 2016 to a new MacBook Air. Was perfectly happy with my Pro apart from it getting hot when I did anything that required a lot (eg podcasting).

I wiped the MacBook and set it up for my boy and loves it, and is just using it for you tube, and a bit of internet browsing. No gaming or anything like that as he has a switch. Using family plan so has that linked etc, and I’m the administrator.

It’s working like a dream and he loves it. Plan is to use it for a few more years then trade in for an air or neo before uni. Only thoughts, is it okay to stick with safari, when it’s Monterey os and not receiving security updates? He’s not doing banking or anything sensitive like that. I’ve seen some suggestions of using Firefox etc… but worried it’ll be clunky etc…

Help ‼️SpongeBob Patty Pursuit 2 Running in Background App Activities‼️

Can someone please explain to me why SpongeBob needs to run in the background? I know I’m on a beta and this could very well be. I even restarted my computer. It was never there before until I left my computer on last night. I know they’ve been saying SpongeBob has something to do with the Epstein files so I really hope some Fat F isn’t spying on me 👀 😂 Someone please reassure me. I’m use to Windows, so this is my first MacBook.

Discussion PSA : More expensive doesn't always mean better.

The modern MacBook Pro's are great, they come in a great balance of size, with the 14" and 16" counterparts. Although certain aspects are great, there are some things that not many people address that are, to say the least, not great.

Some examples

Screen vignette! Ever noticed the edges of your MacBook Pro will look ever so slightly, well.. dark when you open up bright images or use HDR? Once you see it, its often hard to miss and isn't great for a laptop of this price point.

Insane chassis noise!

This one is very unit-dependent. The MacBook Pro 14" especially suffers from this issue, oftentimes when you tap the palm rests with even the tiniest force, you can hear an audible click.

Hinge noise! Notice how a lot of these are noise related.. Often, when you open the screen beyond 110 degrees or so, you may hear a slight *click* when it goes back below that point.

There's no denying, the MacBook Pros of today are great machines. It just feels like sometimes there are downsides to compliment every upside it has. Does anyone else feel this way? I'd love to know!!! :)

Help Which MacBook Should I Buy?

Hi, I’m looking to buy a new MacBook and I’m wondering whether I really need the M5 Pro, or if the standard M5 with 32 GB of RAM and a 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU would be enough for me.

I’m currently using a roughly seven-year-old Lenovo Legion. It’s still alive, but I’d like to upgrade to something more stable, with much better battery life and the ability to work comfortably without being plugged in all the time.

My work mainly involves larger Photoshop PSD files, Premiere Pro, WordPress, a web browser, and usually several applications open at the same time.

Most of the time, the MacBook would be connected to an external monitor, so I think the 14-inch model should be enough. I would occasionally use the MacBook’s built-in display as a second screen.

These are the options I’m currently considering:

– M5, 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD – around €2,599
– M5 Pro with more CPU/GPU cores, but 24 GB RAM – around €3,069
– M5 Pro with 48 GB RAM – around €3,690

Would the standard M5 with 32 GB of RAM be enough for my workload for the next five to seven years? How noticeable would the difference between the M5 and M5 Pro be in everyday use?

I’m also wondering what would matter more for my use case: 32 GB of RAM with the standard M5, or 24 GB of RAM with the more powerful M5 Pro? Is it worth paying significantly more for 48 GB of RAM, or would that be overkill?

I’d be interested to hear from people who work with similar software and workloads.

Discussion Is this normal for a 1year and 3 months old MacBook pro 14" (M4 Pro binned)?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is viewed an an extreme angle and zoomed in to demonstrate the shadow/discoloration I've noticed. At normal viewing angles, I notice only a very very subtle blue tinge below the notch — very difficult to capture in a photo with an iphone camera, but noticeable enough that I checked and took the video above.

Help Keyboard backlight acting possessed after screensaver ends and mac goes on sleep

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am on a 14 inch MacBook Pro - M2 Pro, on the latest Tahoe build- 26.5.2, and since the last two weeks or so I am having a very high idle battery drain. Like, ~40% idle drain while sleeping, in 12 hours overnight, while the same used to be 3-4% at max before.

By default I have kept the keyboard behaviour to be at the lowest non-zero backlight and turn off after 1 minute. But after going to sleep, it's coming back on at 100%.

This time I observed that the backlight flickering show ended after roughly 30 seconds. I think this is linked to the high battery drain issue.

After I told ChatGPT for the battery issue, it said it could be DarkWake causing the drain, but this has never been the issue cuz with the lid closed, usually the BT devices don't connect to Macbook.

Also, it shouldn't be a problem due to Bluetooth as Bluetooth has always been on for the laptop for almost the past three years

Is this a known issue? My extended AppleCare expires on 4th August, so would they be able to help?

Completely unsure what to do, please help.

Edit: I manually went to the top left and clicked on sleep, and was able to successfully replicate the issue. The flickering continues

Edit 2: I pressed Shut Down and the backlight is still on at 100%.. not flickering but stuck at full brightness. HELP.

Edit 3: I went through the diagnostics via holding the power button and the. Holding command + D. Everything looks fine there. However, after restarting, the behaviour has kind of flipped. I am getting the 100% keyboard backlight on sleep, and flickering on shutdown.

It's Here! Finally upgraded from a 2017 MacBook Air to this absolute beast. Talk about a massive generational leap! 🚀

Post image

After using my trusty 2017 MacBook Air for all these years, I finally pulled the trigger on a massive upgrade. Picked up this 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip, 48GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD, and | am completely blown away.
Going from a dual-core 2017 Air to this powerhouse feels like stepping into a completely different dimension. The speed, the display, and having a full 2TB of storage space is just a night-and-day difference.
For anyone who made a massive generational jump like this, what was the first thing you tested on your new machine?

Help Upgrading from 2015 Pro: Do I need a MacBook Pro again, or is an Air enough for my work?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice because I’ve been so out of touch with Apple’s latest models that I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed 😅

I’m looking to replace my 2015 MacBook Pro. It still works, but it’s definitely become too slow for my workflow. I’m a graphic designer and social media manager. Most of my work is in InDesign and Photoshop, and I also edit short social media videos in Premiere Pro, but nothing big or complex.

My question is: Would a MacBook Air be enough for this kind of work, or should I stick with a MacBook Pro? I’m also open to buying an older refurbished model if that would give me better value for money.

I’d really appreciate any recommendations. Thanks! 🙏🏻

Discussion Is there anyway to undo the nano texture coating and make it go back to the original gloss finishing?

The nano texture coating is somehow causing worse eye strain for me, so I'm thinking of ways to reverse it.
