Just got Black macbook pro M5 24 GB ram + 1 TB ssd and i am so pissed right now. Everywhere i saw reviews everyone said 24 is enough for development, that mac os has some magical ram management and such. Whoever will read this do not fall for this trap. I never had macbook, always had linux laptops and this shit uses more ram on fresh boot then my linux laptop with 10 chrome tabs + opened IDE + running project. It’s crazy. I open around 20 tabs in browser + IDE + run project and memory pressure is high and swap is used like crazy. Apple sells ram at so much price and it’s software eats it like nothing. You pay 400$ for extra 8 GB and 10 tabs is only thing you get. 400$ for 10 extra tabs in browser like WTF?

If you want mac for development get at least 48 GB model or get a nice linux laptop with 32 GB.

Anyone using Mac is 27 beta yet? What do you think? How stable is it? Is there much improvement over 26?

Initially bought 16 inch, m4 pro, 48gb RAM, 512gb SSD for ~$2600 from Best Buy, plus needed to buy apple care for $409/ 3years. Had placed order for pick up and was going to be ready this Saturday. Was planning to use locally for LLMs, and some heavy load stuff. So needed the high specs.

However, was not that happy with the purchase considering the high amount, and was having hard time digesting that I am spending 2.6K on a laptop at retail price.

Fortunately found the Apple refurbished one for ~$2630 + ~$115 (apple care yearly)
14inch, M5 Pro, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 48gb RAM, 1tb SSD.

I think this is a good deal, what do you guys think ? The primary downside of the Apple refurbished product is that it's ~$30 extra (not at all of a concern) and its screen size is 14-inches vs 16 inches for m4 pro. I currently use m3 pro, 36gb, 16 inches for office work and I like it, screen size wise but it's quite heavy. But, 14 inches for dev on m5 pro, dont think, it should matter much right ?

So, little confused, the best buy order is still active and can be picked up this Saturday.

If I could get the 14” MacBook Pro M5 Pro for the same price of the base M5, would it be a good choice despite it being overkill? Would it be less efficient? Or perhaps run hotter even during less demanding tasks?

I know exactly the performance I demand, and the base M5 simply covers that, but I’m met with the option of getting the M5 pro for the same price.

Also, would you pay a 170$ more to get the unbinned M5 Pro with the faster, 96W charger (if the faster charger even makes a drastic difference)? Is there really any noticeable difference for someone who wouldn’t truly utilize its maximum capabilities?

Computer has been dragging, particularly Mail and a drafting program my industry uses (this one is pretty typical and the reason I splurged on the 128 mem). I have been looking in Activity Monitor and didn't see anything out of the ordinary when I checked. Today I saw this little guy: textunderstandingd.

Turns out this is the built in AI apple uses to pore over your programs and try to extrapolate and predict text. I think my computer was choking out when mail would open because the AI got in there and went nuts. Also this screenshot of the CPU doesn't do it justice. There were moments I would see it go over 250% of the CPU usage. Once I went in and turned off the Apple AI in settings AND Siri, and the reset the laptop the processes stopped. But a reset did appear to be necessary.

Just wanted to throw this out there in case anyone else is having this issue with the OS. I hadn't experienced this until this week.

I want to buy macbook for school and dont want to spend alot of money. Is this one worth it? Its s 2018 macbook pro with these specs.

How big of a downgrade is this? My gf has an acer 11th gen i3 (don't care about finding the exact model it's so irrelevant I'm not sure why she got it) and she uses it for work occassionally think maybe once every 2 months and it's so painstakingly slow that everytime she works I just give her my mbp m4 pro which is substantially faster.

She's about to start her masters soon and I was traumatized for her just imagining how painful the entire process would be on her laptop. So I'm thinking of getting her a mbp m1 pro 14inch (8cpu cores/14 gpu cores/16gb ram/512gb ssd).

Would this be alright for studies, she doesn't do video editing or programming or anything of that sort, I'm getting a really good deal for $800 it's in excellent condition, would it compare to the smoothness of a m4 pro if you're not redlining it with blender or xcode or adobe etc?

Is there anything I should look out for getting a refurb mbp?

I just want her studies to be uninterrupted and get the mbp experience switching from windows while not spending too much.

Trust me, this isn’t another wait for M9 or get M5 now type of question. I’m simply brainstorming and kindly asking to hear everyone’s insight and predictions for the current market conditions. I need a MacBook Pro, but I don’t necessarily need it until September 2027. It’s a question of whether to risk another price hike or stay safe and get what’s available right now.

I have read that the upcoming, revamped MacBook Pro with the base chip will be releasing around later this year to 1H 2027, and I’m generally excited for the new redesign. That said, it would mean settling for a base M6/M7 chip instead of an M5 Pro (I don’t think I would be utilizing the extra cores of the M5 Pro anyway) and risking the price hike that is being driven by RAMageddon. On top of that, I currently have the option to buy a 14” M5 Pro MacBook Pro for the same price as a base M5 model.

So, would you guys reckon it’s worth risking the price increase and waiting for the redesign, or is it smarter to lock in the better value now?

Just turned it on and the bottom of the display is messed up, if you look at the left there is a black hole. not sure how it was damaged but is this fixable? there is no crack or anything

Hi, I’m looking to buy a new MacBook and I’m wondering whether I really need the M5 Pro, or if the standard M5 with 32 GB of RAM and a 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU would be enough for me.

I’m currently using a roughly seven-year-old Lenovo Legion. It’s still alive, but I’d like to upgrade to something more stable, with much better battery life and the ability to work comfortably without being plugged in all the time.

My work mainly involves larger Photoshop PSD files, Premiere Pro, WordPress, a web browser, and usually several applications open at the same time.

Most of the time, the MacBook would be connected to an external monitor, so I think the 14-inch model should be enough. I would occasionally use the MacBook’s built-in display as a second screen.

These are the options I’m currently considering:

– M5, 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD – around €2,599
– M5 Pro with more CPU/GPU cores, but 24 GB RAM – around €3,069
– M5 Pro with 48 GB RAM – around €3,690

Would the standard M5 with 32 GB of RAM be enough for my workload for the next five to seven years? How noticeable would the difference between the M5 and M5 Pro be in everyday use?

I’m also wondering what would matter more for my use case: 32 GB of RAM with the standard M5, or 24 GB of RAM with the more powerful M5 Pro? Is it worth paying significantly more for 48 GB of RAM, or would that be overkill?

I recently moved from MacBook Pro 2016 to a new MacBook Air. Was perfectly happy with my Pro apart from it getting hot when I did anything that required a lot (eg podcasting).

I wiped the MacBook and set it up for my boy and loves it, and is just using it for you tube, and a bit of internet browsing. No gaming or anything like that as he has a switch. Using family plan so has that linked etc, and I’m the administrator.

It’s working like a dream and he loves it. Plan is to use it for a few more years then trade in for an air or neo before uni. Only thoughts, is it okay to stick with safari, when it’s Monterey os and not receiving security updates? He’s not doing banking or anything sensitive like that. I’ve seen some suggestions of using Firefox etc… but worried it’ll be clunky etc…

I’m looking for some advice because I’ve been so out of touch with Apple’s latest models that I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed 😅

I’m looking to replace my 2015 MacBook Pro. It still works, but it’s definitely become too slow for my workflow. I’m a graphic designer and social media manager. Most of my work is in InDesign and Photoshop, and I also edit short social media videos in Premiere Pro, but nothing big or complex.

My question is: Would a MacBook Air be enough for this kind of work, or should I stick with a MacBook Pro? I’m also open to buying an older refurbished model if that would give me better value for money.

Long story short, but I had my brother buy one for me as there was a good deal locally, and he ran a few Cinebench 2026 tests but forgot to put it in high power mode. It was plugged in though.

Scores (10 minute test)
- GPU 51475
- Single core CPU 722
- Multi core CPU 7280

I am concerned the multi core is very low and may indicate a bad thermal application or similar. Most other 14” tests I’ve seen seem to be in the range 8000-8500.

Given the situation (I can’t test it myself and he is unable to run more before leaving), I’m hoping someone can help me replicate to sanity check if this is fine and I should expect multi core scores closer to 8000 with high power mode on.

- Plugged in
- no other apps running
- around 22C / 72F temperature ambient

Would love to hear what your scores are on automatic from a “cold start” and also if possible what your high power result is. Both 10 minute runs and single pass runs would be helpful.

Ich habe ein altes MacBook Pro aus einer Firmeninsolvenz bekommen und beim aufsetzen kam nach der Softwareinstallation die Info dass es remote über einen Jumpcloud Account gesteuert werden kann.

Ich kann nichts weiter tun als dem zustimmen. Dann soll ich eine registrierte Email angeben, die ich aber nicht habe und dann geht es nicht weiter.

Es gibt die Firma nicht mehr und ich könnte auch keinen Admin daher bekommen.

Kann ich da was machen oder habe ich Elektroschrott gekauft? Es ist ein 2017er Macbook
