I'm living off of protein drinks because I'm profoundly lazy

1.1k Upvotes

Title says it all. I drink protein drinks and eat vitamin supplements for breakfast and lunch because I'm too fucking lazy to plan meals ahead of time. I feel like I'm living on a spaceship.

I need some truly truly lazy suggestions for food. If I gotta bust out the cutting board or turn on the stove, 90% chance it's not happening. Please send help.

I don't even particularly care if it tastes good, but I can't go another day drinking fancy chocolate milk. Sometimes I'll eat rotisserie chicken out of the bag with my bare hands. At one point I was eating beans out of a can with salt and garlic powder.

Nobody told me you get *more* hungry at lower weights!

Sometimes I feel like the weight loss journey is just filled with unexpected traps.

This is my third time attempting to lose weight, starting at 160 lbs back in February. With long term lifestyle change in mind, I went hard on protein and fiber, reduced sodium intake, and added tons of volume/veggies. Then add OMAD/intermittent fasting, and for the first time ever, I wasn't hungry at all after eating!

Once i lost my first 20 lbs, i started adding strength training in March/April.

This lasted all the way to July where I'm now at 115 lbs. And out of nowhere, I suddenly started getting hungry again! My meals that were plenty filling back at 160 lbs suddenly leave me ravenous towards the evenings.

No idea how scientific this is, but apparently after being on a deficit for too long and after burning through too much fat, your body will start demanding more calories/energy?

I'm on a maintenance break now and will focus on lifting. And once i see some more progress in the gym, I'll go on a cut for the final few pounds.

But man, I'm really hoping this hunger subsides soon. I was so optimistic about this time finally sticking because I thought i got rid of the food noise!

- NSV: I ate one slice at the pizza place

I'm down 40lbs since January and closing in on my goal around 50lbs total. I hit a plateau recently and decided I would take my first real maintenance break since starting this process, timed to coincide with a family vacation this week. I figured two birds one stone, my body gets a reset to hopefully kick start my deficit losses next week, and I can relax a bit and not bring a food scale etc, plus I knew we would be eating out at least a few times.

So tonight on this vacation/maintenance break we go to a pizza place. I'm still lightly tracking my food but not weighing things and not stressing about nailing my calorie budget. I also got a long bike ride and swim in today so I know I've got a little extra wiggle room. So it's time to go to town, right? But y'all, the pizza came I ate one big slice and then...I was done! There was plenty left, I thought about grabbing another slice, I mean I can't remember the last time I went out for pizza and had a single slice, having just two would have represented incredible self control for me. But I thought about it, I felt whether my stomach needed more food, and it didn't. So I didn't have another.

Driving home with a big leftovers box it really hit me how different it feels to have these habits in place that give me some control over eating. I don't think my appetite has changed much, but I have all this extra mental distance now between the compulsion to eat and actually putting the food in my mouth that feels so powerful. I remember as a little fat kid once getting so sick at a party because I just. Couldn't. Stop. Eating. Pizza. It's crazy how long I just didn't address it. I'm glad to see I can change.

Lazy diet foods when all I wanna do is binge all day..?

I've been looking at ways to cut calories during periods where I really just wanna eat pizza and ice cream and chips and generally overeat all day. It doesn't always help me drop more weight but it keeps me from gaining as much back when I don't feel like will-powering through all the craving. This is what Ive been trying/thinking about. Lemme know if y'all have any you like that aren't here?

-stove cooked popcorn. No oil. Seasoned w Tony's creole seasoning and lemon pepper.

- decaf coffee, plain

-sugarfree ice creams (yasso. Halo top)

-sugarfree drink swaps (sodas, energy drinks, watered down fruit juice instead of soda at work)

-Gonna try zucchini noodles once I get some zucchini (the insatiable need for pasta is neverending). Classico Alfredo probably the lowest cal pasta sauce I've found.

(Anyone else tried the zucchini noodles and are they p good?)

- not sure if caramelized onions helps much on account of the sugar but it gets me to eat onions at least... So...

-any tips on cutting the oil without having to eat all my veggies raw would be sick. I've used roasting and stir frying primarily to get myself to eat them but I HATE salads. Have also dry roasted but maybe there's something else I could use on them?

I lost 180lbs and I'm facing the final hurdle.

I lost over 180lbs over the past 4 years with diet and exercise. I worked extremely hard for this, I have gotten to a steady weight finally and decided to go ahead with the process of speaking to a plastic surgeon about skin removal. I have a great deal of skin that just hangs and wrinkles and it's all at the bottom of my stomach, breasts, my pubic area and my thighs. My surgeon would have only been able to work on my breasts and stomach, but that's all I wanted. They did their evaluation, took pictures, described what to expect with surgery. But then i am told that my stomach apron doesn't hang low enough, and even though I have had to use Nystatin religiously for years they still say they need proof it's causing rashes and chafing. All I can think of to do is stop taking care of the areas because I have been bathing 2-3 times a day to keep in under control so I can prove the fucking rashes happen, or just go hardcore strict on my diet and my workouts until my belly hangs low enough. I feel completely defeated.

But they said the breast reduction is most likely going to be approved, which will put my former G cups at a small C or smaller. My concern is that with such small breasts and this grotesque wad of wrinkled sagging skin, I will look absolutely awful. I don't know who to even talk to about this. They say I should just be happy to have lost the weight, but I just want to feel beautiful for once in my life.

I lost the weight I feel like the surgery should be covered, I worked so fucking hard.

I'm so depressed

My friend thinks I’m in a severe deficit and they may be right?

F22 73kg 163cm, lift weights 3-4 times a week, 20-40mins on the treadmill and otherwise average 2-4k steps a day. He calculated my TDEE and it said my maintenance would be 2,200kcal, I’m tracking my food daily and eating 1,300kcal (give or take, 1,500 on some days but I don’t mind slower progress) thinking i am in a 500 deficit but apparently im closer to 900.

I started my deficit in June at 75.5kg, but the thing is the scale has barely gone down since, 2.5kg so far. If I was on such a massive deficit shouldn’t it have been way more than that? Shouldn’t I be losing muscle as well as fat? Or is my body in “survival mode”? I’m not feeling fatigued or groggy so it doesn’t feel like im starving. Should I eat more and see how my body responds?

Any help/advice is appreciated, i feel my judgement is very cloudy on this and need an objective outsider view. Thanks a lot!

Tracking calories or not?

Hello everyone, I am currently at 212lbs and my goal is 150-160lbs. I tried calorie counting on my phone years ago, and it did work for a time. As time went on, I began to become obsessed with it. I didn't enjoy eating, and it got to the point where I cared just about tracking. Always tracking, even the smallest thing had to be tracked on my phone.

My question for everyone: is there a way to lose the weight WITHOUT using calorie tracking or a food scale? I want to be able to enjoy the food I eat and drink. I eat healthy all the time and enjoy a variety of foods (with the exception of not liking a select bunch of vegetables)

Is 1700 really my maintenance?

Hope this is ok to post here, let me know if there’s another subreddit more suitable!

My personal trainer (who I’ve got to help me end my 2-year long plateau from the gym) told me that my maintenance is 1700 but I (25F) find it hard to believe that 1700 could truly be my maintenance given my activity levels. Honestly, if it is indeed my maintenance calories, I’m going to have an extremely harsh reality check.

For context, I’m 5’4 and approximately 116.4lbs. Body fat last I checked a week ago (on calipers) was 15.5%. I am fairly active — I work out 4 times a week at the gym and 2-3x doing Muay Thai (1hr each session). I also average over 10k steps a day. Sometimes, I get so hungry on 1700 that I feel lightheaded, particularly on days when I’m doing Muay Thai but my trainer keeps asking me to stick to 1700. I don’t want to underfuel and I AM committed to making the most of learning from my trainer’s expertise but this feels like one of those moments where maybe I shouldn’t be listening to her.

Edit: grammar

Edit 2.0: thanks everyone for the insights so far! I guess I’ve learned that I probably need to pace my meals better and get better at volume eating…

Edit 3.0: There are a few comments asking why I’d be cutting even more even at 15.5%. I’m not cutting at the moment, just asked to stick to maintenance at 1700 (which I am already struggling with). My trainer did suggest I go to 1500 for a couple more weeks, which was my cutting calories but I’ve pushed back on that. The reason why she’s asked me to continue cutting or at least try to stay at maintenance is because 15.5 was the measurements given by the caliper measurements, which can tend to be off by around 2-3%. So, actual body fat could actually be around 17-18% and cutting down to a lower bf % would put me in a better position when I’m doing a bulking phase later (I.e I can do it longer). The purpose of this post is not to ask how I can keep cutting but whether 1700 is truly my maintenance or am I actually still in some kind of cut phase that my trainer is putting me through.

So hungry

6'3" female, 233 pounds, 39 year old mom of 3

I've been working out almost every day all summer. I do a 20 minute warmup, followed by 3 types of weights (30, 20, 10). Followed by another 30-40 minutes of elliptical.

So far I've gained 8 pounds, but I'm not calorie counting right now. I'm on the last few months of breastfeeding my third (he's about to be 17 months):

I am struggling with not being insanely hungry after workouts. I am eating protein, I feel like I'm eating well. But the scale is moving up so I'm starting to get worried lol.

My goal is somewhere between 170-180. I'm not sure yet because I'm working on muscle and normally when I'm 170 I'm on the thin side. So I think my goal weight might be higher ultimately. I've struggled a bit with an obsession with calorie counting so trying to keep myself calm and not too intense.

Anyway any advice on the hunger / weight? I'm kind of assuming I won't lose weight til I start calorie counting

Favourite recipes to use up awful protein powders?

I have come to accept that there is not a single protein powder I like, after spending a lot of money on tub after tub of them. I either hate the chemical artificial sweetener taste such as in clear wheys, or I hate the actual whey protein taste in the traditional protein powders. My last resort was to buy unflavoured but that just tastes like sour milk.

So I’ve got about 10 tubs of various flavours to use up and I’m casting my sights on recipes that could use them to reduce waste. I’m thinking anything that has strong flavours to mask the undesirable sweetener/protein taste, if anyone has any recommendations!

Im so proud of myself

About a month ago I bought a gorgeous pair of denim trousers from a brand I love and when I tried them on i physically couldn't fit in them, there was absolutely no way the buttons and zip around my waist were going to meet and it really gave me a much needed reality check on my eating habits.

After that I decided something had to change, I've been on a diet of 1200 calories a day for around 3 weeks and today I tried them on and I can button them up almost perfectly! I'm genuinely so proud of myself, as someone who was convinced I couldn't lose weight this is definitive proof to myself that it really worked and I feel so happy. This is a message to anyone out there who thinks you cant lose weight, you can do it!!!!

I’m so sick of this. My brain is fried.

23,F. I’ve been on a weight loss journey for 3-4 years and have lost about 100 pounds of my body weight so far. However, most of that weight was lost within the first 3 years. Last year, I gained some weight and lost it this year. Currently weigh, idek, 180-200 pounds? I’m not sure, I haven’t used the scale in quite some time. But I’m confident about the 100 lb weight loss. I used to be very good at losing weight and I used to be able to maintain my mental sanity while doing so. I used to exercise and track religiously.

The problem is, I’m sick of it. My brain has been in weight loss mode for so long, I can’t look at a food without knowing how many calories are in it. I am so afraid to break certain rules, like having a bagel and coffee in the same day. I feel so distraught by the idea of not tracking calories. I have lost some weight in 2026, but I know I could have lost more. I could probably have my “dream body” by now, but I’m too lazy and unmotivated.

My therapist believes that I need to learn how to eat intuitively, and focus on finding balance and eating well without tracking religiously. Clearly it’s not working! I have so much fear about going over my calories that I just do it anyway, and feel worse. When 3 years ago, I would just shrug it off and move on. I just want it to be over, I just want to have my “end” body and be able to eat at maintenance forever. I have to get these last 30-40 pounds off of my body but I just can’t. It hasn’t been working.

Idk just needed to vent.

[Century Club] Have you lost or need to lose 100+ pounds? July 23, 2026

Hey!

This thread is for those who have lost 100+ lbs (~ 45kg , ~7 stone). Welcome to “the club; our meetings are on Thursdays.

100+ lbs is the equivalent of a small adult human. Losing that much weight at a healthy rate can take months to years, and there are many topics that are quite different for this situation than for those who only have smaller amounts to lose.

Everyone is welcome to join, even if you haven’t hit 100 lost, or had less to lose.

I hope that this thread can be inspirational for those just setting out to start their journeys.

Every week I will try to provide a discussion prompt, however you are free to move the discussion in any direction you would like or ask any questions you think might be best answered by someone who has lost 100+ lbs.

Today’s Prompt: What kind of communities/support networks do you have around you to support your maintenance effort? Alternatively, if you’re still losing, what kind of support networks do you use to keep going?

I feel like I'm missing a piece of the puzzle with emotional eating. Any books or resources?

Hi,

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I need help and hope I can find some insights or different perspectives here.

I want to lose weight, and keep it off this time.

But I think I'm addicted to food, especially the unhealthy kind.

Over the years, I have tried several approaches (exercise, counting calories, eating moderate portions, removing all the junk food from the house). I even tried Noom and I have to admit it worked the best.. until it didn't. The weight always came back, and some more.

I can also say that I have worked on accepting who I am, and I think I've made a lot of progress. There is still a part of me that thinks I really could do better. What I don't know is whether I am just being too hard on myself, or if there is actually something that can be done.

The reason I feel an urgent need to take action now is that I'm in my early 40s and see perimenopause coming around the corner. I am scared that I will gain even more weight. Also, my partner just went through a sudden critical illness (he made it through and is almost fully recovered) and that scared the shit out of me-for him, for our son and for me.

I want to live a healthy life, not only so I can actually enjoy it, instead of feeling constantly fatigued, but also because I'd like to set an example of what it is to live a balanced life.

Quick backstory. I won't give all the details because it could honestly be its own book, but the tl;dr version is this: I was born in poverty, grew up in an abusive home, and went through a lot of trauma, both directly from the abuse and indirectly from its lasting effects. It's left its marks. I have done therapy and it helped a lot.

I started smoking cigarettes very young and smoked until my late 20s. I stopped when I met my partner. I feel that is relevant because that's exactly when I started gaining weight. It never stopped.

The interesting part is that I was able to quit cold turkey, and never looked back - which I can't do at all when it comes to food.

I think I can fairly say that I am an emotional eater. I also like to eat all the bad stuff, almost as a reward or a way to cheer myself up. It's probably a habit I picked up in my early years.

I was able to keep the weight off for the longest time by smoking (hindsight is 20/20).

My mom, my grandma, my sister and I are all larger-bodies and have struggled with weight gain/loss. I do believe there is a genetic component to it.

Full disclosure, I do find that being obese (according to my BMI) is extremely freeing from the male gaze. I live really well with that. I do have a pretty face so I think my perspective might if it were not the case.

My question for you is: Are there any books or other resources out there that explore and dive into this emotional mechanics behind the eating of unhealthy foods?

I feel that if I can understand it and figure this out, it would make a real difference. I think I have the emotional tools to deal with the discomfort, but it also feels like there is a puzzle piece missing, and if I could really understand and conceptualize the dynamics behind my habits, I would be able to put better boundaries in place and respect them.

Otherwise, I'd welcome any other insights. Please feel free to share!!

How do I make a start at losing weight?

I'm a 26 y/o F that weighs 305 lbs. My goal weight is 180 lbs. Now, with that being said, i know it'll take me a while to reach this goal. I'm interested in running but don't know if I should at this weight? I feel like it would be harsh on my joints. But also I'm just looking to improve my cardiovascular health in general. My resting heart rate is between 95 and 105. It's even still high in my sleep (i had a sleep study done). I do try to go walk at least 3 times a week. I usually do about 2 or 3 miles each time. If i'm not walking then I try to do just a little 20 or 30 minute dance video at home. I'm just really struggling. I think I'm struggling most with consistency and what I eat. I do not like my weight at all and I want to do something about it. I just get discouraged easily too. Any tips and tricks would help. Thanks in advance

Struggling to keep on losing

So I've been struggling for a long time to kick my health into gear after gaining about 200kg or so from a massive depressive episode from my teens to mid 20s. One day, I finally had the energy to crawl my way out and choose to do something about it

Ive asked my doctors about trying to start and kind as they are, they tried to shuffle me onto the injectables which I'm really spooked out (fear of stabs) and I tried a stint with a dietitian but that didn't work out at all (she recommended that I eat nothing but fish tacos when I'm allergic to fish...)

So far outside that, I've been trying to snack less & do a ton of water exercise since it hurts to move around so much however I just feel like I've hit a brick wall. My bathroom scales still don't work which makes tracking my weight really hard. I ask others and they're like 'hey eat nothing but salads!' which I thought was fair but salads are really plain and I've never enjoyed them and just gives me that itch to just relapse to eat something with meat and flavour.

Does anyone else struggle with this? Is there a way to keep on the path to get stronger and well?

A little unmotivated

Hey everyone,

This is just a little rant haha but I wish I understood our bodies

I have days where I walk 15,000 steps, have my little snacks throughout the day and have 3 slices of pizza at night (it was a cheat day for me) and lose .5 lbs the next day yet yesterday when I walked 24,000 calories and ate a little less than usual, I woke up gaining .2 lbs, it just doesn’t make sense to me and today we’re going out for breakfast for our friends birthday and I was going to have just a simple eggs, bacon and toast (which is why I was planning on walking more yesterday and today to make up for it) but now I don’t even want to go because I feel discouraged with my weight loss :(

What made you decide it was time to stop?

Howdy all,

29M, 272->174 since November and still going. Im in a weird spot where my drive for the past few months was "just stick to the grind and keep losing" but I realised this week im lighter than Ive been since grade school and all of sudden its bothering me.

I lift consistently (need to do heavier and start focusing core tbh) so my arms/legs/chest are looking great but Im still holding weight in my stomach area and haven't reached a point where abs are on the table so still on the cut. I feel stronger than ever, Im flying through trails that used to gas me and Im not struggling with the diet at all but almost half of me just evaporating away is messing with my head.

6'2 (gained an inch with the weight loss, either posture or spine was mad compressed lol) so 22.3 bmi and could technically go all the way down to 144 before I hit underweight but really don't want that. Just curious when you guys called it and started maintenance/lean bulking and how you determined it was time

No snacking?

I (32F) struggle with intense food noise and as a result can’t control my snacking. I don’t really get hungry between meals but I snack just because and I very rarely stop at 1 snack.

I’m considering cutting out snacking all together and just eating 3 balanced meals within the day and incorporating my ‘snacking calories’ into my meals.
M reasoning is if it’s off the table completely it will be easier to manage than moderation.

I currently weigh 187 pounds and am 5’5 and originally over estimated my maintenance calories so I think I’ve been eating at maintenance for the past month rather than a deficit and am looking to consume about 1600 calories a day (I’m fairly sedentary). I feel like if I spread that out across 3 smaller meals and a few snacks I’ll be less satisfied than I would if I just ate 3 larger meals?

Has anyone had success doing anything similar? Did your food noise reduce?

I've lost weight but my waist measurement is 3in (7.62cm) bigger than it was before I lost the weight??

I started taking losing weight more seriously this year than I ever have before. I've always been fat, since the 3rd grade. It hurt my self esteem so bad that by the time I was 20, I didn't take any care of myself or care about what was going into my body in the slightest because I thought "It doesn't matter what I do, I'm never going to be able to eat right, I'm always going to be fat, and it's not like I can get any uglier than I am now, so who cares" and just ate, and ate, and ate, and ate my feelings, had no idea how to control myself, etc. I was in a really dark place, mentally.

got especially bad from 2020-last year, where I BALLOONED. I also lost my job and became disabled (unrelated to the weight) in 2022, which did NOT help. Being jobless since then, fighting for disability for four years, self esteem at a new low because I couldn't work, am comedically poor, and my mental health just took a general sudden 90 degree angle dive in every direction. So I did what I was taught; I ate my feelings and BLEW UP.

One day, after a visit to the nephrologist bc it turned out I have stage 2 kidney disease, I weighed in at 350lbs (158.75kg). I was crushed. I needed to do something. Even then, however, struggling with my mental health, it was incredibly difficult to work on my disordered eating, bad habits, and the psychology behind why I struggle between sugar addiction and using food as a form of self harm and like any other addiction. I'm still greatly working on it.

I spent a lot of time teaching myself how to eat healthy, volume eating, when to eat, the importance of why I eat, healthy substitutes I can make, etc. Again, I have an eating disorder as well as a slew of other mental health problems. It's not like I didn't know that eating a salad has a lot more nutritional value with way fewer calories than eating a frozen burrito--that it would keep me fuller, longer, on fewer calories, and give me the proper nutrients I need (how tf am I as fat as I am AND anemic!? LOL), it's just that I wasn't, and sometimes still am not, in the right mental headspace to make the right choices. Again, food is an addiction for me, it's self harm and self love in one.

So, to present, when I'm finally in the headspace to not need food to constantly regulate for me, and can do a much better job at making the right food choices (still not perfect, I won't even lie), and I'm able to "take it more seriously," for lack of better words (I took it seriously before, I just wasn't well enough in my head to do what I needed to do, but I am now):

I've lost about 15lbs in the last 2 months, going from 350lbs to around 335. My clothes seem a bit too big for me now (I walked up the stairs and my pants fell RIGHT DOWN LOL, as well as other wardrobe malfunctions due to the clothes just being too big).

So I thought I'd get myself some new clothes that actually fit me. I went to measure myself, as I know that all womens' clothing brands and stores have different sizes per measurement range.

When I went to go measure my waist, I went from 56" (142.24cm) from last year (had to measure myself for a wedding I was in) to 59" (150cm) just a few moments ago!? How does that work!? I've been losing weight, eating less, trying to eat more of the right things, trying to get into exercise more, etc. How is it that my waist is measuring bigger yet my clothes aren't fitting right anymore and I'm losing weight?

I'm measuring in the same spot, where all the places online tell you to measure for your waist. It's the same spot I measured last year for the wedding. I've had all of my measurements written down on a sticky note on my laptop that's constantly open since May of last year. I know those were correct because that's what I had to go off of for my bridesmaid dress, and it fit like a dream, and it's where the dress lady measured me as well. It's also where I've measured myself this time around.

PLEASE tell me I'm just stupid and that this is just user error, because what is going on?? I measured other parts of my torso to see if it was even close to the measurement I got last year, and none of it was. This was to see if I just measured the wrong spot, but it doesn't seem that way.

Ngl, this is a huge hit to my self esteem if this is accurate bc wym I already looked fat as a house beforehand, you're telling me I look even fatter now that I've lost weight!? What am I doing wrong here? TToTT

Thank you SO much for your help, as I'm genuinely so confused as of to what's going on.

UPDATE:

Could be water retention or gas. I've been constipated. Since I have Kidney disease, it could be edema. I'm having my gf measure me when she wakes up because I hope to GOD this is just user error somehow. PLEASE let this just be a "me" moment where I just messed up a simple task because I am genuinely mentally disabled (diagnosed, I'm not making a mean and distasteful joke, I'm being serious lol)

How do you guys stay motivated while tracking calories?

I’ve been working with a trainer online for nutrition and exercise since October 2025, and have seen decent results thus far. I’ve gone from 148 to 136 lbs, but for the last few months I’ve plateaued and can’t seem to go below 136. We have a fairly strict plan of what I can eat for breakfast, lunches, and snacks, but today he said we might need to become more cognizant of the calories I’m consuming at dinner. Up until now, he was giving me full freedom to make and have whatever I want for dinner, without focusing on calories. My partner and I make dinner about 5 nights a week…we love to cook. And we don’t always follow recipes, nor do we measure things, so the idea of having to measure everything and pay more attention to exact numbers scares me.

I’m worried that if I start trying to focus on how many calories I’m consuming for dinners too that I will really lose motivation because I won’t feel like I can eat whatever I want. My trainer has been great in preaching that putting one self on a diet doesn’t stick in the long term, so we haven’t done that, and I appreciate that mentality since I agree.

So my question to you all is, how do you manage to stick with it if you’re measuring foods and counting calories for three meals a day/7 days a week?

Edit: I should add that I’m aware you can’t always have your cake and eat it too (no pun intended!) but I want to give myself as much flexibility as possible to still enjoy the foods I like while also being able to continue to lose the weight.
