Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering Mandarin Offering: Mandarin/ Seeking: English

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm a 22-year-old Chinese female currently living and working in Singapore. I'm looking for an English-speaking language exchange partner to help me improve my spoken English.

I use English every day at work, so improving my spoken English is really important to me. I can communicate in English, but I'm not fluent yet. I'd really appreciate it if you could correct my grammar or suggest more natural expressions along the way.

In return, I'd be happy to help you with Mandarin! I'm a native Mandarin speaker and I speak standard Mandarin, so whether you’re a complete beginner or already learning Chinese, I'd be glad to help.

I'm happy to chat about almost anything—daily life, culture, travel, food, work, sports, movies, or whatever interests you.

Ideally, I'd love to meet women who are based in Singapore, since I'm hoping to make some friends here as well. If we get along, it'd be great to meet up for coffee or other activities in the future. However, I'm also happy to connect with people from anywhere!

Feel free to send me a message if you're interested. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Offering English Offering : English, Urdu, Marathi, French (B2). Seeking: Portuguese (Brazilian), French and Arabic

Upvotes

Im 19M from India, I enjoy learning languages and need to learn Brazilian Portuguese for my career. I wish to improve my skills further, I am stuck at B1 and thought maybe having a Portuguese speaker as a partner would help. If you're interested please comment or dm me. I am fluent in 3+ Indian languages and English too. I also had an experience of teaching English for a few months. Arabic and French were a part of my academia hence I would also love to progress further where I left.

Offering Portuguese Offering: Brazilian Portuguese (and friendship), Seeking: French (B1 - B2); German (A2); Italian and Spanish (sort of starting)

Hello! I am D., 24M, from Brazil. I am learning French — I'd describe myself as being in B1-B2, as I am able to understand Arte documentaries, to complain about things (and explain why I am complaining about them), give my opinion, and so on —, and I’d like someone to talk (or to write—I am totally fine with emails and so on) with as I learn, especially as I have found yet again that both French pronunciation and ortography are far from easy.

I am also learning German — I am more or less A2 so here I could tell you with much difficulty — and not many details — about my day ("Ich habe Brot gegessen! Das hat gut geschmeckt") or give very short opinions. I don't know how we could proceed here; we could perhaps write to each other in our own languages, for example. But I am sure we can find some way. Besides that, I am somewhat interested in starting with Spanish and/or Italian, though for now, I will mostly keep myself to doing Anki and watching Spanish-language and Easy Italian videos — but we could do the same (I write in Portuguese or English, you in Italian).

As for me, I am a master student in sociology — my fields of interest is sociology of intellectuals/culture and sociological theory (I'm getting my ass beaten by Parsons right now). I am interested in history, cinema, sociology, anthropology, politics (not a nutjob—don’t worry), tv shows, literature, writing, fine arts, cuisine (been craving some boeuf bourguignon and steak tartare lately), (genetics and documental) genealogy. My interests with both languages are quite simple: I'd like to go abroad for my PhD, but besides that I have a liking for both the Francophone and the Germanophone world. I like their intellectuals, Musil and Céline are both of my favourite writers and I really like Viennese humour (they taught me that German-speakers are funny!), I like French cuisine, and so on.

(Also, if you just want to practice Portuguese, feel free to reach out!)

Offering Mandarin offering Mandarin | seeking German, English advanced

Hi everyone!

I’m currently a student studying in Germany. My native language is Mandarin Chinese, and I’m also fluent in English (Nearly C2 level). My German is currently around the A2 level, and I’m looking for a language exchange partner/friend to practice relaxed German conversations and build confidence!

I love cycling, being out in nature, and playing video games

I'm looking for:
• Casual, low-pressure conversations (text or voice) where we can help each other improve.
• Since my German is A2, we can easily fall back on English (or Chinese.) whenever we get stuck.

Happy to help you with Chinese or English in return!
Feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM if you're interested!

Offering Bosnian Offering: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian/Montenegrin | Seeking: German conversation partner (B2/C1)

Hello everyone!

My name is Sead, I am 52 years old and I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I passed my German B2 exam more than four years ago. However, I have not had many opportunities to use German actively since then, so my speaking fluency has become weaker. I sometimes make mistakes while speaking, and I would like to improve my confidence, fluency and understanding of natural spoken German again.

My goal is to work in Germany as a pädagogische Fachkraft / Jugend- und Heimerzieher so improving my communication skills is very important for me.

I am looking for a German conversation partner (B2/C1 level) for regular video calls (Zoom or Google Meet).

Ideally:

  • 3–5 times per week
  • around 60 minutes
  • relaxed conversations about everyday life, work, culture and different topics

I would especially appreciate connecting with someone from the Balkan region (Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia or Montenegro), because sometimes it can be helpful to briefly clarify something in our native language if we cannot express it in German. However, everyone who wants to practice German is welcome.

If you are interested, feel free to send me a private message.

Looking forward to improving our German together!

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Hungarian, English | Seeking: Russian

hi hi, i’m looking for someone to help me start learning russian because my current level is basically A0 / nonexistent😭 the cyrillic interface has not opened yet

i’m a native hungarian speaker and fluent in english, so i’d be happy to help with either language. i can help with casual conversation, writing, pronunciation, grammar, slang, or explaining why hungarian sometimes looks like an administrative incident.

for russian, i’d like to start with the alphabet, pronunciation, basic phrases, everyday vocabulary, and eventually simple conversations. i’m looking for someone patient who doesn’t mind explaining beginner level things from absolute zero

i’d prefer someone who actually wants a consistent language exchange rather than one introduction followed by digital disappearance. we could text, send voice messages, correct each other’s writing, or occasionally have voice calls later once my russian operating system becomes functional

i’m interested in music, fashion, films, internet culture, travelling, languages, psychology, nightlife, and hearing about strange or funny things from everyday life. i’m in the central european time zone, but asynchronous messages are completely fine

this is strictly for language exchange, not dating. comment or message me with what you’re learning and what kind of practice you’d prefer ♡ (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

Offering English Offering: English, Mandarin (B1-B2) | Seeking: Mandarin, Japanese

Hi all! I'm 19F and a native English speaker looking to improve my Mandarin, which is sitting around a B1-B2 right now. I'd also love to work on my Japanese, but I'm still a complete beginner, so I may take some time.

I love reading (anything from classics to webnovels), writing, and gaming (Arknights, WWM). I'm also into personal finance, linguistics, photography, and travel, but I'm open to chatting about anything!

I'd love to help with English in return; I've tutored before, so I'm quite patient! If you're also learning Mandarin, we could definitely practice together. Feel free to reach out if it seems like we'd click :)

Offering Multiple Languages Offering : Mandarin(native) english pronunciation, english (B2) | Seeking: english (C1,C2, native)

Upvotes

Hi! I'm an 20 male native Mandarin speaker looking for someone to practise English with and help each other improve.

I'd say my English is around B2 overall. My main strength is pronunciation. I've studied some basic phonetics and phonology fairly systematically, and I'm particularly familiar with British and Australian English pronunciation.

Just to be clear, I'm not a native English speaker and I'm not claiming to have native-level pronunciation. However, I'd say my pronunciation is quite good for a non-native speaker. I speak fluently and clearly, and I think my accent sounds fairly natural overall. I've posted a few videos of myself speaking English before, so feel free to check my post history if you'd like to hear what I actually sound like before messaging me.

I've also had some experience helping other English learners with their pronunciation. I've helped quite a few Chinese classmates identify and work on pronunciation issues. Since Mandarin is my native language and I also have some basic knowledge of Chinese phonetics, it's naturally easier for me to understand where Chinese speakers' pronunciation problems come from and explain the differences between Chinese and English sounds.

That said, I'm definitely happy to try helping people from other language backgrounds too. I'm quite interested in accents and pronunciation in general, including individual sounds, stress, rhythm and connected speech.

What I'm weaker at is grammar, vocabulary and natural expression. I can use English comfortably in everyday life, but I still make grammatical mistakes and sometimes struggle to express more complicated ideas naturally.

So my ideal exchange partner would be an advanced non-native English speaker (C1/C2 or similar) who is already very comfortable using English but perhaps isn't as confident about their pronunciation or accent. If that's you, I think we could complement each other really well: you could help me with grammar, vocabulary and natural phrasing, while I could help you work on your pronunciation.

We can chat first and get a sense of each other's level and what we can help each other with. The whole point for me is to exchange skills and improve together, rather than have one person teaching the other.

Native English speakers are absolutely welcome too! I'd be very happy to practise with you. The only thing is that I'm not bagging for a free tutor, and I'm don't know what I could offer you in return if English is already your native language 😅 (if U r interested in Chinese I can teach you though especially the pronunciation) But if you're interested anyway, feel free to message me!

And again, I don't want to oversell my pronunciation I'm still a non-native speaker myself. You can check my previous posts and judge for yourself whether you think I could be helpful.

Feel free to DM me if this sounds like the kind of exchange you're looking for!
