Getting started with lace as a hobby

Some people come here to ask general questions about lace, or share some great antique store finds, or to share family pieces. That's all great and I love to see them.

But some people come looking for ways to get started in lace. There are many kinds of lace, and I'll try to update this with good "starter" links or videos as we find them. Feel free to suggest good ones in the comments and I'll add them over time.

In-person lace experiences

The wider lace community is very big on workshops, retreats, monthly lace group meetings, conferences, etc. I mean, this varies from group to group location. But I read a lot of the local lace group newsletters in the US because I help edit ours, and I know there are a lot of active ones.

International Organization of Lace has a map of US regional lace groups and their links. https://main.internationalorganizationoflace.org/organization/charter-chapters

OIDFA and OIDFA-USA have other groups, but I just joined so I don't know my way around them yet. https://www.oidfa-usa.org/home

The Lace Museum has regular workshops online: https://thelacemuseum.org/virtual-education/

Since the pandemic, lace workshops have moved very effectively to zoom too. So there are now many classes available during conferences or on a regular basis from various places.

Repairing Lace

Cleaning Lace

  • Museum curators, I am told, use Orvus. An example of that is here. The Lace Museum Detroit CLEANING ANTIQUE LACE Note: she talks about deciding if you really need to clean it at all. Also acid-free archival paper for laying lace out.

  • A company in Massachusetts does textile conservation for museums. I know someone who went through their program, they are legit. They have some resources on their website. https://museumtextiles.com/resources/

"I have a box of grandma's lace. What can I do with it?"

  • First, you should use it. Put it out, cherish it. But should it be too much for you, or not your style, another option is below. Thanks for considering repurposing them as well. We would like to see them get used and cherished too.

  • You can offer them to your local lace guild. What happens to us when we get a box like this is that we might use some for demonstrations (for example, I put them out as examples of a typical style, or use them as tablecloths for our other things). Or we have an internal sale of them as fundraisers for lace. So they go to people who like and use lace, and raise funds for our ongoing activities. Search here for a chapter near you and connect with them: https://main.internationalorganizationoflace.org/organization/charter-chapters Not all lace guilds will have the means to manage a box, but many will.

I'll edit as we collect more. Thanks for helping to crowdsource this!

hey yall i’m new to this sub! looking for… lower movement styles of lace making!?

so i have been a knitter, primarily a lace knitter, for like half my life and now i am having issues while knitting. i’m looking for something more low impact on my hands, my mind is mostly going to bobbin lace but idk all the forms! i have done tatting before (needle) and enjoyed it but im not sure if i wanna get back into it. very fine knit lace and bobbin lace are my favorites and now that knitting is getting very hard i’m freaking out inside a little and looking for alternatives ! my issue mostly comes from gripping. holding the needle for more than 10-15 mins is now not my friend, bobbin lace looks like it could be way easier on your hands since you’re not holding two objects the entire time. including a pic of an edge i made on vibes the other day before my body fell apart !

Experimenting with antique threads

It’s much coarser than I what I usually work with but I like the way it held its shape (after blocking with just water). Going to try to make 3-dimensional pieces with it next maybe. Have any of you made rings with lace and have any tips?

Is it possible to fix any of this?

So my boyfriend has this really REALLY old quilt from his great grandmother who passed away last year, and this quilt has a lot of sentimental value to him.

Problem is that like any old and very loved blanket, it’s seen a lot of use over the years. Because of that the lace that’s sewn on top is coming off in places and fraying in others.

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on fixing the damage?

Help identifying or learning more about this eyelet lace?

I recently purchased this vintage lace. I was told it's made in Germany and it's cotton. I would love to know if anyone knows any of the following:

  1. When (year/decade) and how was this likely made?
  2. What type of flower it is meant to be
  3. How can I discover if it's 100% cotton?
  4. Any tips on how best to clean it (there are some stains on it)

Thanks so much!

Help to attach a lace edging

Thumbnail

I made a lace edging that isn't straight but rather wavy, kind of what the picture 1 shows. It goes sewn around a centre of fabric and the final piece looks like a star.

I'm looking for the right technique to attach the edging to the fabric but I can't find a proper explanation.

The border of the fabric is supposed to be kind of embroidered (?) and then joined to the lace, as shown in picture 2.

How do you achieve the final shape? Do you cut the fabric first, then embroider the border and then the edging?

If anyone can point to a tutorial it would be appreciated 🙏

Where to buy lace fabric?

Hi! I was looking for some red or like burgundy lacy fabric online but I’m more of an in person touchy feely vibe so what is the best store to go to for buying fabrics? Should I go to Micheal’s or are there any other craft stores? Honestly, price is not an issue I’m just overwhelmed looking at all the stores online so I want to go in person. Btw i live in Tx so if there are any local stores lmk! TY!

My annual State Fair tablecloth is ready! It took me 75 minutes to pin it out, and has 352 pins holding the outer loops down. It blocked out to 42” across. Pattern is Ullstein Strickbrief H 6602 by Herbert Niebling. I used 16/2 bamboo from Maurice Brassard and 000/1.5 mm needles.

Hey guys, does anyone know what type of lace Yoonchae wears when she performed as a feature on Let Me Tell You by Yeonjun? Hope it's clear enough. She wears a white leather jacket with straps in the second one, and I'd love to recreate her outfit in the future and I can't find any dupes online!

Edit: Sorry for the blurry pictures, I rushed downloading them off X!

Advice on keeping this lace top in good condition

Thumbnail

I love this top. So much so that I got another one with tags on from vinted. The first one I had for a year and admit, did not handwash as the care label instructed and did not take good care of it, as in wore jewellery with it on and so on. However, I did notice that from the first wear, without initially washing, the lace was fraying from the edges of the top. Over the months the lace frayed in all edges, chest and shoulders. I don’t know if size had anything to do with it as I did buy it two sizes small while the new one is perfect fit.
Now I just want to keep the second top in good condition for as long as possible. Does anyone have any tips on what I could do to keep this cotton blend lace last a while? Is there even anything I could apply to it to seal up? I don’t know if clothes even work that way.

Any help, much appreciated, tia.

Apologies if this isn’t the right sub.
It’s on the Ermanno Scervino lace-embellished sweater in Havana brown.
