Got a nice little handful of Hopewell style dart points for you here. I find myself favoring the form of these whenever I want to make something easy and fairly effortless, so I've worked on making a little collection for myself. A good variety of material here, and I'm quite pleased with them overall 🙂‍↕️

3 5/8” x 1 1/4” This rock is torture to knap. Hammerstone, bison punch, bison pressure, and a couple angler pressure flakes to get the ears. Messed up the base on one side it’s a little crooked, but it stalled and I’m not risking breaking it at this point.

I'm basically across the bridge from NYC in Jersey City NJ. I'm a total n00b. Do I have any chance whatsoever of finding anything useful on the ground in a park or near a river?

My Dacite from neolithics is finally here! Post office only lost it twice.

I helped out at a knapping class this weekend. One of the students, who is 11 now, had been at a different class about 6 months ago at my house (I wasn't teaching). He hung out while I was knapping and was fascinated by it but also super attentive and took instruction unlike any other kid I have demo'ed knapping for(it is in the hundreds). I showed him the basics then and told his parents if he was interested we'd welcome him in the adult course this summer. We had him spall a flake off an obsidian core with a hammer stone, and he busted this out today.

I think this is decent for a 2nd attempt at knapping. It ended up smaller than I would have liked but that's just what happened.

Saw Boommhauers lost and figure is throw some of mine in for the next 3 months.

This is my first time knapping anything. I don't understand how to get the flakes to shoot across and thin the piece. Where do I go from here?

The brown one was one I paid Ryan Gill to make so I had a reference point. The grey ones are knapeasy I made. I know laws vary by state in the US on stone points, but based on what you see, could they be effective points for hunting?

I did a little spalling yesterday and just wanted to showcase some of the delicious local material to me. I know my garage is filthy lol. Missouri

Some almost hixton in a bathe. Gonna let it soak for a little while to make it work better. Extremely coarse grained rock. No where near hixton on TQ, but damn is it pretty.

Back again with a handful of stemmed points for y'all! I kinda hate notching (a lot) so anytime I can make some stemmed points, I take the opportunity to do so. Gives me the chance to focus on fancy flaking a bit more since I can leave things a bit thicker, and these are the fruits of my labor 😌

Quite proud of how they all turned out, ESPECIALLY that Scottsbluff Type II 👀 Took some meticulous work to get that puppy worked out. But they all hold a special place in my heart.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with identifying this rock! I really want to punch the notches quite a bit deeper but am scared of snapping an ear.

3 13/16” x 1 1/2” raw Kay co/Florence Hammerstone, bison punch, bison pressure. Beautiful rock, but very dry and crumbly, it flakes well with percussion/punch work, but very heard to pressure flake. Works like very dry low to mid grade Burlington for reference.

Not sure on material, possibly fine grained basalt? Flakes excellent but seems even more brittle that obsidian, almost every flake come off in multiple pieces.

I feel like ive got a well rounded kit but am i missing anything for basic knapping? I know i dont have a punch/mallet for blade cores yet (i feel i need to get somewhat competent at knapping first) but is there an "indirect percussion" tool I could make from bone or antler?
